Chapter 182: Police Academy Arc Wild Police Story CASE. Date Wataru
Seven years before present times, one month into the Police Academy...
"Onizuka's class, keep those hands moving." Date barked, his class was on cleanup duty that day. "Let's get this place cleaned up quickly so we can eat."
"Sorry, Matsuda." Furuya told the bombs expert. "Could you lend me your dustpan?"
"Sure thing." Matsuda replied. "But you'd better Rei-turn it later."
"Pathetic." Furuya teased. "Two points."
"Those two have become fast friends." Morofushi noted.
"As Jinpei-chan's best friend, I'm a little jealous." Hagiwara grinned.
"Hagiwara-kun!" one of the girl cadets from the neighboring class called out. "Don't forget we've got a mixer on our next day off."
"You can count on me." Hagiwara assured. "Be sure to grab Mizuno-chan, too."
At lunchtime...
"Crap, I haven't prepared for English class." one of Date's classmates complained. "That English teacher hates me. I'm scared they'll call on me."
"Then get Furuya to teach you." his lunch partner suggested. "Hey, Furuya. You look like you'd be fluent in English."
"I'm all right." Furuya admitted.
"Figures since you're blond and half." said classmate teased. "I bet your English is better than the instructor's."
"Won't it be better to ask Mizuno?" the first student wondered. "I mean she's multilingual enough to know over 75% of European languages."
"Multilingual nothing." his lunch partner snorted. "I heard she scored 255 in her last IQ test."
"Damn." Hagiwara whistled lowly.
"Don't make assumptions about people based on their appearance." Date snapped, grabbing the student by the front of his shirt. "And quit trying to look cool by chewing on a toothpick." he snatched the toothpick from the student's mouth and snapped it into two.
"Team Leader." Hagiwara started after Date returned. "Have you got a crush on Furuya-chan? You were oddly defensive of them while we were cleaning, too. You don't have to hide it." he chided. "It doesn't bother me."
"Obviously not." Date twitched. "I have a girlfriend."
"WHAT!?" the other four exclaimed.
"You don't have to be so shocked." Date muttered.
The next day...
Date's group was walking past the training hall next to their class when they heard the hall's instructor call the match to Ami's favor.
Later that night...
Furuya met Date outside the Academy's gates, he himself was heading out to the nearby convenience store to get some toothpaste.
"Sorry about this afternoon at the dojo." Date apologized, the two men walking towards the convenience store. "I went too far. My dad's got nothing to do with you guys."
"Wasn't your dad a police officer, too?" Furuya wondered.
"He was a patrol officer assigned to a police box." Date confirmed. "He was skinny and looked weak but I respected him. Until that day my dad was off duty; it happened right after my dad entered the store. An agitated man covered in someone else's blood came running in with a wooden sword in one hand and demanded money." he recounted how his father had kowtowed to a gangster who had raided the convenience store they were in, said gangster only leaving when police sirens were heard coming, but not before his father was beaten until he had to be hospitalized for a whole year.
In the convenience store...
"You're here too, Mizuno?" Date instantly spotted the head of blue hair at the feminine care aisle.
"Isn't that a bit much?" Furuya gawked at the five tampon boxes and two pantyliner packs in her basket.
"I prefer stocking up." Ami replied. "It's better than dropping by every two months. You mind grabbing a box of chamomile tea bags, Furuya?"
"Here." Furuya retrieved a box of tea bags and dropped it into Ami's basket.
Just then, a gunshot was fired into the air. "Nobody make a move." the robber demanded.
"Okay, which one of you jinxed us?" Ami complained.
"Put your phones in the box." the second robber ordered, having gathered the store's patrons.
"Furuya, Mizuno, there are two culprits." Date whispered. "We can take them down with the three of us."
"Something's not right." Furuya refuted. "Why aren't they stealing the money from the register and fleeing immediately."
"That's true." Ami agreed. "You don't think..."
"But rescuing all the customers right now is our priority." Date reminded. "We haven't been tied up yet. This is our best chance."
"What are you guys whispering about?" another voice sounded behind them and the store assistant slammed the end of a rifle onto Date's cheek. "I'll kill you."
"Shall we get this started?" the leader of the robbery gang declared.
After tying their hostages' hands to their backs with zips ties, the three robbers herded everyone into the utility room.
A metal clang was heard moments after the store clerk shut the door, Furuya's attention was turned to the nail clippers Ami had removed from her pants pocket. Turning his back, he picked up the clippers between his fingers and worked to free Date first.
"Nice thinking, you two." Date praised, ripping the tape off his mouth.
"Do you always bring nail clippers when you go out?" Furuya asked after the trio freed the others.
"Yes." Ami replied. "And a miniature sewing kit."
"You really are something else, Mizuno." Furuya chuckled.
"Too bad there isn't a key-hole on this side." Ami remarked.
"Anyway, what are the culprits after?" Date wondered.
"Probably the ATM cash supply." Furuya reasoned. "The resupply schedule is kept secret to prevent theft, but you can predict when it'll occur by checking the ATM's approximate balance on security images."
"That's why they needed the clerk's help to pull this off." Ami added.
"Anyway, why aren't they concealing their faces?" Date was puzzled. "The clerk isn't even wearing sunglasses."
"It's obvious, isn't it?" Ami chided. "They have no intention of letting any of us leave alive once they're done."
"A switchboard." Furuya walked over to the switchboard and used the switches to send an SOS message via the electronic signboard.
Outside...
Later, when the two security officers entered the store to top up the ATM, the robbers who were lying in wait were about to attack them from behind when the disguised Matsuda, Hagiwara and Morofushi entered the store.
"Seriously, is that a rifle?" Hagiwara gaped.
"Don't be a wuss." Matsuda rebuked. "It's obviously a replica for filming movies or something."
"Are they really filming a movie?" one of Ami's female classmates gushed.
In the utility room...
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Zero." Morofushi opened the door.
"Morofushi, what are you doing here?" Date was shocked.
"We saw the sign's Morse code and came to take down the culprits." Morofushi replied. "Not by force, but with numbers." he turned to see the other cadets had taken down the robbers.
"We're just doing what your dad tried to do." Matsuda told Date.
"I was actually at the convenience store when your dad was beaten by that gangster." Hagiwara revealed. "You were probably too distracted by your bloodied dad to notice, but several of the men's accomplices entered the store after that. Your dad probably noticed his accomplices were in a nearby car. Even if he'd attempted to arrest him, if his accomplices had joined the fight, he couldn't have beaten them. If a fight broke out inside the store or if they barricaded themselves inside, the other customers could've been harmed. Since the police arrived so quickly, your dad probably reported the crime and was trying to keep him from going deeper into the store until the police arrived."
