Chapter 186: The Deadly Pork Soup Signal
Time passes...
"The victim is Lisa Hewitson-san 25 years old." Takagi reported. "Mizuno-san confirmed the cause of death to be shock due to blood loss. She estimated the time of death to be between 1:00am and 1:30am."
"Judging by how much blood she lost, the culprit probably got her blood on themselves." Chiba observed.
"So, what's the weapon?" Mouri stepped in.
"We haven't found the weapon yet." Takagi admitted.
"What about fingerprints?" Mouri inquired.
"We found three sets of fingerprints other than the victim's." Chiba replied.
"What's inside that pouch?" Conan wondered.
"They're on the table over there." Chiba pointed to the victim's belongings that were laid out on the coffee table. "Her ID, wallet and various cosmetics. There was a ball-point pen and notepad, too. There were no signs of the front door or windows being forced open, so..."
"This may have been the work of an acquaintance." Takagi noted.
"Then, we should talk to the boyfriend first." Mouri suggested.
In the police car...
"Hara Takashi-san, 23 years old." Chiba revealed what they knew about their first suspect. "We were able to confirm with their acquaintances that he was dating the victim. Additionally, the fingerprints collected when he committed a traffic violation matched the fingerprints found at the crime scene. Komaki Satoshi-san, 24 years old." he continued after Hara pointed them to Komaki. "Previous offenses include tax evasion and attempted extortion. According to rumors, he has connections with some rather rough individuals. Furthermore, his fingerprints were also found at the crime scene. Komaki Mihoko-san, 28 years old." he related, after Satoshi directed them to his wife to confirm his alibi. No previous offenses. Since they married two years ago, she's been his housewife. Before they married, when she worked at Komaki's club like the victim, he pressured her into marrying him."
In the Komaki household...
"Ask me anything." Mihoko insisted. "My husband insisted I answer all your questions truthfully."
"What time did Komaki-san come home last night?" Takagi asked.
"My husband normally returns between 2am and 3am after his bar closes." Mihoko recalled. "Last night, he said there was something on TV he wanted to watch and returned at 11pm. An accountant he knew was arrested and he wanted to watch it on the news."
Noticing Mihoko keep glancing at the jockey figurine on the table, Conan looked closer and spotted the listening device attached to one of the jockey's racing boots.
"Madam, how did a young and beautiful woman like yourself end up married to that man?" Mouri was puzzled. "I'm sure you had plenty of better options."
"I married him two years ago." Mihoko sighed. "At the time, I was engaged to another man. Back then, I believed I would marry my fiancé, but just before the wedding, he was stabbed by an unknown assailant. He died. The culprit was arrested soon afterwards, but apparently they died in prison. After that, a series of unfortunate events occurred around me. The company I worked for suddenly went bankrupt and my sister was being stalked. My father's factory caught fire. My mother fell off a train platform. The silver lining was that none of my family members died. When I was at my lowest point, it was Komaki who reached out to me."
"Do you love your husband?" Conan asked.
"Of course I do." Mihoko replied awkwardly.
Knowing that Mihoko was lying, Conan looked up the internet for more information about Oi Ryohei, the artist who painted the picture on the wall. Realizing what was going on, he sent a text to Takagi and Chiba in Mouri's name, informing them that the room was bugged and suggested they use some other method to communicate with Mihoko.
After assuring Mihoko of police protection, the housewife went over to the kitchen counter to prepare dinner and started cutting up the green onions, burdock and daikon radishes in the preparation bowl.
"That's enough." Komaki retorted, entering the house. "Stay away from my wife. You've heard enough. If you're not going to arrest me, then get out of here."
"Madam." Conan whispered to Mihoko. "It's a good luck charm." he handed her his Detective Boys badge.
In the police car...
"The culprit is almost certainly Komaki, but we don't have any evidence." Takagi declared.
"Detective Takagi, take us to the victim's apartment." the tranquilized Mouri requested. "The first thing she was trying to tell us was about the mic hidden on the horse figurine. She couldn't speak freely because of it. The second thing is the art on the wall. There was a date on the work. Detective Chiba, try searching for incidents that occurred on December 7th. A slasher murder. The victim was most probably Mihoko-san's fiancé. It's likely the person they arrested was false;y charged."
"It's the evidence." Chiba realized, remembering Satoshi had rattled out the pieces of evidence related to the slasher murder. "The evidence collected from the slasher murder case was exactly the same as the items Komaki mentioned earlier."
"He probably left the same evidence at the crime scene in order to frame Hara-san." Mouri surmised. "But for some reason, the evidence was missing. Then, there's the life story she told us. That must've been true. She's stuck because of it. Even if Komaki is arrested, she was probably told her family would be harmed if he learned of her betrayal."
"Then, why did she start chopping vegetables?" Chiba was confused.
"That was a hint from her as well." Mouri revealed.
"What do green onions, burdock and daikon radishes have in common?" Cona queried.
"They're long and thin." Takagi gaped.
"Not believing that would be enough, she began doing something else." Mouri added. "When Komaki showed up, none of us were looking, but Conan confirmed it. She chopped the vegetables and created..."
In Lisa's unit...
"Why don't we try disassembling it?" Conan suggested, staring that the bagged ball-point pen.
"It's a cleaning receipt." Chiba gaped, finding the rolled-up receipt in the pen's barrel.
At the laundry shop...
"We finally acquired some concrete evidence." Takagi showed the bloodied shirt that was retrieved from the laundry shop.
"This is Chiba." Chiba took the call. "Komaki has gone missing." he exclaimed.
At the pier...
Using his Criminal Tracking Glasses, Conan located where Satoshi had taken Mihoko.
"Police." Takagi barked. "No one move!"
Working together, the two police detectives took down Satoshi and his thugs.
Later that night...
"I really should be used to this, shouldn't I?" Amuro poked his head into Ami's office. "I brought dinner." he showed her the soup thermos in his hand. "Vegetable soup."
