Chapter 192: The Ghost's Revenge

Time passes...

"Is something wrong?" Conan asked, returning from school. "You're frowning."

"Apparently Suguro Takayuki's ghost has appeared." Mouri snorted.

"Suguro-san's ghost?" Conan echoed, recalling that he and Mouri had bumped into Suguro, his wife, Suguro Sayaka and his secretary Makiura Tateru, merely two weeks prior. Only to discover Suguro was murdered several days later.

"Rumors that his ghost appeared to have spread throughout town." Mouri supplied. "He appears before his wife and secretary. It's ridiculous." he scoffed. "Ghosts don't exist. Who would spread a strange rumor like that and for what purpose? Have they made progression in their investigation?" he and Conan peered out of the window, hearing the police sirens on the road.

Outside Oshikawa Masato's apartment...

"Inspector, who's that?" Mouri asked.

"Oshikawa Masato." Megure replied. "He was a suspect in Suguro's murder. We received some information the day before yesterday pointing to him. He was a tough and brazen man. He seemed plenty suspicious to us. While we were looking for decisive evidence, he killed himself. According to Mizuno, the estimated time of death is late last night. He died after cutting his left wrist with a razor and sticking in the tub."

"After killing Suguro, the police caught up with him." Takagi added. "Believing he can't escape, he gave up."

"We believe he may have used the same method as a confession for his guilt." Chiba concluded.

"Would a tough and brazen man kill himself when the police hadn't found decisive evidence?" Conan wondered.

"It's our fault." Sayaka stepped forward with Makiura.

"We believed Oshikawa Masato was the culprit but we lacked the evidence." Makiura explained. "So, we decided to use a ghost. We'd heard that Oshikawa believed in ghosts, so yesterday, we spread the rumor that Suguro-sensei's ghost was seeking revenge on his killer. We were certain the Oshikawa would be frightened by the rumor and turn himself in if he did it."

"Does that mean it's my fault?" Omori Fukusuke, the owner of Manpuku Restaurant and Oshikawa's friend, exclaimed.

A while later...

After confirming with Omori that he was indeed the person who told Oshikawa about the ghost rumor, Mouri and Conan went in search for the Suguro former housekeeper, Hanai Tokuko, who told them she witnessed Makiura and Sayaka kissing two years ago. Kanda had also confirmed that Takayuki had taken out a life insurance policy with a special accident clause a year ago at Makiura's recommendation.

The next day...

Mouri gathered everyone involved in the case in the nearby park. "Sayaka-san and Makiura-san, the secretary, killed Suguro Takayuki." Mouri accused. "They even killed Oshikawa and made it look like a suicide in order to frame him. After killing two men, you should gracefully accept..." before he could even derail from the deduction, Conan tranquilized him.

"Since the situation could be read that way, it would be wise to fess up." Conan took over, using Mouri's voice. "Otherwise, you'll be held accountable for the murder of Suguro you didn't commit. You probably have the evidence that you didn't kill Suguro."

"This is as far as we go." Sayaka sighed.

"This was on Suguro-sensei's desk." Makiura took out the suicide note he kept.

"He wasn't killed." Conan confirmed. "Suguro committed suicide. He probably figured out that his beloved wife, Sayaka-san and Makiura-san who he trusted completely, were in a relationship. He was referring to these two when he told his friend, Kanda-san, over the phone that he couldn't forgive them. Once he realized they were in a relationship, Suguro knew immediately why he was made to take out an insurance policy. They planned to kill him and make it look like an accident, so they could collect the insurance money. That's why Suguro decided to kill himself. There would be no insurance payout if he killed himself within three years of signing the contract. Suguro-san probably invited Kanda-san over to the house the next day so he could see your disappointment. The day of his suicide, he sent the two of you out of the house and used a stereotypical method that could only be interpreted as suicide. When you returned home, you were shocked and panicked. You could hide the letter, but you couldn't make it look like an accident. You couldn't let his death be ruled as suicide either, so you had to make it look like murder. Because of that, you needed a culprit, so you killed Oshikawa."

Later that night...

"Killing for monetary reasons is indeed terrifying." Amuro admitted, serving up a cut of mirin salmon to be paired with rice.

"Don't I know it." Ami moaned, serving a side dish of daikon and carrot salad.
