Chapter 199: The Sweet Voice Heard Through the Phone
Time passes...
"Mouri Detective Agency." Mouri took the incoming call. "Isn't this Nagamine-san?" he recognized the voice. "As promised, you're arriving at 3pm, right? I'll be waiting."
"About that," Nagamine voiced. "Actually, I got lost on my way here. I'm going to be about five minutes late. Mouri-san, I have a request. Please call me Mayako. I think it'll help me be more honest."
"It's been 30 minutes since then." Mouri muttered, pacing around the office.
"Nagamine Mayako-san is late." Conan pointed out.
"How do you know the client's name?" Mouri complained.
"I know more than just her name." Conan stated. "One year ago, Nagamine Mayako-san married her former boss, Nagamine Haruhiko-san. Now, she's a housewife. Her husband's been divorced once and rumors of his infidelity have continued even after their marriage. She's coming today about her husband, right?"
"Not about his infidelity." Mouri corrected. "She's worried he might be involved in some criminal activity. She recently saw Nagamine-san bring home a suitcase in the middle of the night and hide it in their garage. After he left, she got out the hidden suitcase and attempted to examine its contents, but it was locked. However, that suitcase is apparently quite heavy. Mayako-san." he took the next call.
"I'm sorry, I know I'm nearby, but..." Mayako voiced.
"I'll go meet you." Mouri insisted. "What can you see from there?"
"I just spotted my husband." Mayako gasped, calling from a public phone. "It is him. He followed me."
"Mayako-san, stay where you are." Mouri instructed.
"No, I can't." Mayako replied. "It would be disastrous if he found out I was visiting you. I'll head to your office once I've lost him."
"She's in trouble." Mouri hang up. "Nagamine-san is following her. Mayako-san called me from a payphone. Apparently, her husband has a short temper. There's no telling what he'd do to her if he found out she was meeting a detective. He also thoroughly checks her phone, so she always uses payphones to call me."
"I'm home." Ran called out.
"What's wrong, Ran-nee-chan?" Conan noticed Ran's confused look.
"I just saw a pretty lady who looked lost, but a suspicious man wearing a hat was following her." Ran related.
"Mouri-san, I'm currently at Kuraun Park." Mayako called a third time, Conan putting the call on loudspeaker. "My husband is still nearby. If he finds me, he might kill me."
"Mayako-san!" Mouri exclaimed, hearing a frightened scream from his client before the call was cut off.
In Kuraun Park...
"Mayako-san." Mouri spotted the unconscious Mayako near the public toilets, the scared-off Haruhiko had ran off.
After Megure's team was called in...
"The victim is Nagamine Mayako-san, 31 years old." Takagi read from his notes. "She's a housewife who lives rather far away from here. Mouri-san can explain what she was doing at this park so far away from her home."
"Inspector, Mayako-san was..." Mouri started.
"Someone rifled through the victim's bag." Conan supplied. "Was anything taken?"
"Her wallet and valuables were still there, so I doubt anything was taken." Takagi answered.
"What about her phone?" Conan asked.
"We didn't find one inside her bag or pockets." Takagi recalled.
"You should search her bag more thoroughly." Conan insisted.
"Inspector," one of Megure's officers called out, he and his partner having taken Haruhiko into custody. "He was wandering about wearing bloody clothes, so we brought him here."
"I didn't kill her." Haruhiko protested. "I'm here because Mayako invited me here. We got into a little argument about my relationships with women. She asked me to come here so we can discuss divorce. When I arrived, Mayako was already on the ground."
"Who are you?" Takagi turned when a person fitting Yufunezawa Kyoko's description turned up.
"You!" Haruhiko recognized his co-worker once he removed his disguise.
"I'm Aragaki Ippei, his junior co-worker." Aragaki introduced himself.
"Why are you following Mayako?" Haruhiko demanded.
"The president ordered me to." Aragaki replied. "The company discovered that he embezzled roughly 100 million yen from the company. Since it would affect the credibility of our company, I was ordered to recover the money he embezzled before we reported it to the police."
"If I'm going to be accused of murder, then I'll tell you everything." Haruhiko relented. "It's true that I embezzled money from my company. I packed it in a suitcase and hid it in my garage, but it's gone now. Mayako-san said she gave it to a friend to hold on to. She was probably planning to split it with them."
"Oji-san, do you have a moment." Conan asked. "Did you know the name of this park?"
"I learned today it's called Kuraun Park." Ran recalled. "Everyone calls it Jizo Park since it has jizo statues."
"Earlier, I saw the name of the park engraved on a pillar at the entrance." Conan added. "But, at one glance, you wouldn't be able to read it as Kuraun Park. I doubt Mayako-san would've known the name of the park if it was her first time in this part of the city. The woman on the phone clearly said Kuraun Park. It means the woman who you spoke to over the phone wasn't Mayako-san. You've never met Mayako-san before, right? Since you never met, you wouldn't know if that was really her voice."
"Then, who have I been talking to?" Mouri gaped.
"Probably Mayako-san's murderer." Conan revealed. "Looking at it that way might allow us to solve the case."
"I've figured it out." Mouri declared. "Mayako-san and the culprit are twins."
Conan sighed and tranquillized Mouri before the detective went off-tangent. "Excuse me, Inspector." he took over. "I've finally solved the case. The person I'd been speaking to over the phone was probably Mayako-san's killer and not Mayako-san herself. The culprit planned to kill Mayako-san at this park from the start. The culprit spoke with me over the phone numerous times and created the impression that they were Nagamine Mayako-san. And then, they killed Mayako-san with a knife after inviting her to the park and pretended they were calling to say they were about to get killed from the crime scene. Then, they left the park and Nagamine-san arrived. Then, I arrived and discovered Mayako-san. Even though I hadn't witnessed the murder, I'd been convinced Nagamine-san killed her. Conan, could you ask Detective Takagi to do what I told you earlier? Detective Takagi." he ran out of his hiding spot and whispered into the detective's ear.
"Takagi-kun, what is that sound?" Megure heard a phone ringing.
"It's Mayako-san's phone." Takagi responded. "While thoroughly checking her bag earlier, I found this beneath the false bottom."
"The culprit used pay phones to call me, but they sent directions to Mayako-san's phone." Conan continued. "The last call she received today must have been from the culprit. That's why I had Detective Takagi call back that number."
"I found this phone in the area." Yufunezawa protested.
"I recognize your voice." Conan stated. "And the sound of the bells on your earrings. It wasn't Mayako-san I was speaking with over the phone, but you."
Left with no choice, Yufunezawa pulled off her wig to reveal herself as Haruhiko's ex-wife.
"When Mayako learned you were hiding 100 million yen, she asked me for advice." Yufunezawa bragged. "So, I instructed her to invite you to this park."
"Then, you killed Mayako-san, and framed Nagamine-san in an attempt to keep the money for yourself." Conan guessed.
"I hated Mayako for taking away my happiness from me." Yufunezawa glared at her former husband. "Even you too; enough that I wanted to kill you."
In Café Poirot...
Usagi was idly stirring her cooled coffee as she cast another glance at Amuro who had his back to her, the tanner man was prepping up the toaster. "What is it that you see in Ami, anyways?" she suddenly asked. "Why are you with her? I just can't understand it."
"What about it don't you understand?" Amuro inquired, already sensing the obvious hostility the pig-tailed blond harbored for his lover.
"She's just so boring and bland." Usagi huffed. "I don't get what you see in her; she can't be enough to satisfy you. You could have anyone else, you have so many better options; like me." she thrust her chest forward as emphasis.
"I believe I've heard enough." Amuro switched off the toaster and took out the two pieces of toasted bread. "For your information, you could never be enough for me. Ami is more than enough; she is my perfect match. And I'm most definitely not about to give up on that for her former friend who decides that snatching someone else's lover is an okay thing."
"Fine!" Usagi snapped, all patience thrown out of the window at Amuro's rejection. "Don't regret this!" she slammed several bills on the counter and stormed out.
