Chapter 202: The Alley of Sad Betrayal
Time passes...
"Bon appetite." Yamaura Takashi, the owner and head chef of the Italian Izakaya RESO' in the Beika Gourmet Restaurant Street, served up the pizza Mouri and Conan ordered.
"What was that?" Mouri exclaimed when an excavator claw crashed into the restaurant's wall.
"You!" Yamaura stormed out of his restaurant. "What do you think you are doing knocking down the wall while we're open?"
"I was hired by the owner of this place." the excavator driver explained.
"Kusumi, you jerk!" Yamaura snapped at Kusumi Hiroyuki who was exiting the storeroom with a bag of sob flour. "I've had enough of your crap."
"Why are you creating a commotion in front of my store?" Nakano Fumio, the owner of the sushi restaurant 'Sakura-ya', chided.
"This goes way beyond simple harassment." Yonezawa Yuji, the owner of Creative Cuisine 'Seventy Seven, chided.
"Words weren't enough to make some people move out." Kusumi patting himself down. "If you don't like it, then why don't you give me your signatures already? Actually, I wouldn't mind of you went ahead and dropped dead, like that soba shop owner." he snarled at the shut down soba shop. "Fine, I'm out of here." he shrugged, finding himself outnumbered.
"I need to go to the bathroom." Conan voiced.
"Take this with you." Yamaura flipped his golden token to Conan. "This is one of this alley's medals. The toilet is back there. Take a right at the dead end. Insert the medal to unlock the door."
Fifteen minutes later...
Mouri headed off to the toilet after Yamaura returned with some takeaway. Opening the toilet door, he was shocked to see a beaten Kusumi fall out from behind the door.
After the ambulance was called in...
After borrowing another medal from Yamaura, Mouri headed back to the toilet, only to be stopped by Conan.
"Don't go in there." Conan warned. "This wasn't an accident; it is a crime targeting Kusumi-san."
After Megure's team was called in...
"This bathroom unlocks when you insert a medal." Megure noted as he and Takagi worked out the mechanism. "It automatically locks when the door is closed. Medals can't be inserted while someone is inside."
"But I thought it was odd that he was able to insert a coin when Kusumi-san was inside." Conan nodded.
"The only conceivable explanation is that someone was with him and left the bathroom, leaving the unconscious Kusumi-san inside." Takagi suggested. "This wasn't an accident, but a murder plotted by someone in the alley."
"He was apparently making unreasonable demands for you to move out." Megure related. "That sounds like a motive."
"A member of our alley won't do that." Nakano protested.
"That's what we're going to investigate." Takagi related. "During the 15 minutes between 5:30 when Conan-kun went to the toilet and 5:45 when Mouri-san found the falling victim, where were you and what were you doing?"
With Megure and Takagi focusing on Nakano who did not have an alibi, Conan started analyzing the case. Returning to the crime scene, he found soba flour scattered on the floor. Putting his dirtied finger under the running tap, he was stunned to find the flour had become sticky and finally figured out what happened. "Wait." he ran back to the sushi store.
"Mouri-san said someone else did it?" Takagi echoed.
Conan led everyone to the Creative Cuisine 'Seventy Seven' store and was pleasantly surprised to find Mouri there.
"Speaking of smells, didn't Kusumi-san smell like rotten vegetables?" Mouri noted. "It was pretty strong, but I guess you wouldn't notice if you smelled the same way. If you're making curry, then you must've used some. Asafoetida, a spice that smells like rotten vegetables. When heated, it becomes the delicious smell of cooked onions. You're the one in the bathroom with Kusumi-san, weren't you?"
"I have an alibi." Yonezawa reminded.
"You used to do it all the time while accepting reservations." Mouri pointed out. "You'd hold the phone between your shoulder and cheek."
"If I did it, then what's the weapon?" Yonezawa questioned.
With everyone else cornering Mouri, Conan was left with no choice but to tranquilize the detective.
"The bottle isn't the weapon." Conan took over. "It's right in front of you. It's hard frozen bread dough. Though it's beginning to thaw. Even if fingerprints get on it, nothing would be left if it's baked. That's why you took it to the bathroom without even wrapping it in plastic. You left behind a large piece of evidence by trying not to leave any behind. This powder was on the ground near the bathroom." he presented the collected heap of flour.
"I think that's soba flour." Yonezawa explained. "Kusumi's jacket was covered in soba flour, so it would be on the ground."
"There was soba flour everywhere, but this is different." Conan pointed out. "Watch this." he dabbed a finger under the dripping tap and rubbed the water drop into the flour. "Since you only knead bread dough, you don't know. Soba flour doesn't become sticky even when you knead it in cold water. That's why they use hot water to make soba. Why was there wheat flour mixed in with the soba flour on Kusumi-san's clothes?" he questioned using Mouri's voice. I thought it was strange from the start. Why did the culprit close the door? If the door hadn't been closed, this case likely would've been treated as an accident. Closing the door was necessary because the culprit wanted to frame Fumio-chan."
"That's right, I killed him." Yonezawa confessed. "I killed the jerk who harassed the soba shop owner to death."
"Why frame Fumio-chan?" Yamaura was puzzled.
"He probably heard I was moving to the train station building." Nakano guessed.
Later that week...
Rei and Yuichiro were having dinner in a high-class restaurant and Rei was sensing that her boyfriend of almost a decade was about to propose to her.
"Rei-san, please marry me." Yuichiro declared.
"I'm so happy." Rei gushed. "Yes, I'd love to. I'm sorry, I knew you were going to propose today." she giggled. "I'm so happy to know that you tried so hard to make it a surprise."
The next day...
"What?" Usagi was shocked when she saw the newest post on Rei's blog about her being engaged. "I can't believe she's marrying before me. Why is this happening? I only stole her boyfriend and now she's happy? This is so frustrating. I know." she smirked. "All I have to do is steal from Rei again. So, Rei lives in this apartment." she managed to track down Rei's address. "That's her." she noticed Rei walking down the street in high spirits. "It's so disgusting." the blond sneered. "If I wait her long enough, her fiancé should be showing up. That man..." she noticed a male walk past some two hours later. "He's trying to get into Rei's room. So that means... excuse me, but are you Rei's fiancé?" she approached the disappointed man. "My name is Usagi and I'm Rei's bestest friend. I heard Rei just got engaged so I wanted to celebrate."
"You're right." the man confirmed. "I'm Rei's fiancé, Noboru. I forgot the key to her house, so I can't get in today. I never knew Rei had such a beautiful friend like you."
"You're making me blush." Usagi flushed. "Noboru-san, you're so kind." she immediately clung onto Noboru's arm. "I know I'm Rei's friend, but I'm falling for you."
"Usagi-chan, you're such a bad girl." Noboru teased.
Rei's fiancé is so easy. Usagi smirked. This is already equal to stealing Rei's happiness from her. I can't wait to see her cry.
A few weeks later...
Rei was relaxing on a beach when her phone rang, the Caller ID indicating it was from Usagi.
"Hello, Rei." Usagi sang when Rei took the call. "Long time no see. How are you? You were planning on getting to get married, right? You haven't been able to see him lately, have you? That's because, I'm the reason why. I got pregnant with your fiancé."
"Usagi, what are you saying?" Rei was bewildered.
"What's wrong with you?" Usagi mocked. "You just don't want to admit because you're frustrated with me. You should be ashamed of yourself. How sad of you to get your man stolen by me, again."
"I'm telling you, listen to me." Rei insisted.
"What is it you want to say?" Usagi inquired. "Noboru's already my husband."
"Did you just say, Noboru?" Rei blinked.
"Your fiancé is Noboru, right?" Usagi pressed.
"No, that's not him." Rei replied. "Noboru is just someone who's been stalking me. He's been posting lewd comments on my blog; he even found out where I lived."
"You're lying." Usagi stammered. "That can't be."
"It's the truth." Rei insisted. "He's here." she noticed the Kumada yacht coming her way. "Yuichiro, here!"
"Yuichiro?" Usagi echoed in disbelief.
"Yuichiro's my fiancé." Rei clarified. "I couldn't see him for six months because he was posted overseas for further training to take up reins of the Kumada Conglomerate."
"What's with all the bragging?" Usagi fumed. "The baby's going to be born in a few months. How could you? This is your fault."
"Don't mess with you." Rei snapped. "Why do you always try to take mine, Ami's, Makoto's and Minako's happiness away from us?"
"Because I was jealous of all of you." Usagi sobbed. "You all have something I wanted. It's not fair."
"Whatever." Rei scoffed. "You did this on your own. You're not a child anymore. Take care of it on your own. Bye." she hung up.
A few months later, Rei got wind that Usagi had dumped her new-born baby on the doorstep of an orphanage after Noboru refused to take responsibility.
