Chapter 205: The Case of Ayumi's Illustrated Diary 3
Time passes...
"June 15th, today, I went shopping with the Detective Boys." Ayumi recounted. "Suddenly, out of nowhere..."
Earlier that day...
"Someone, come quickly!" a frantic call sounded from the 'Tanning Salon Kurosawa'.
The Detective Boys, alerted by the shout, ran upstairs to the tanning salon.
"Sorry, young lady." Tsunoda Yasuo apologized, having bumped into Ayumi. "Are you all right?"
"Did something happen?" Conan asked.
"Nishitani-san is dead in the back." Tsunoda gasped.
"Haibbara, call the police and ambulance." Conan instructed. "Take us to him." he told Tsunoda.
"It's dark in there." Mitsuhiko noted, Tsunoda leading them to the back of the salon.
"Nishitani-san's dead in the back." Tsunoda related, after switching on the lights. "Room number nine, third from the back on the right."
"You guys wait here." Conan told the others and headed inside. Entering the room, he found the naked victim slumped face-down on the tanning bed. His foot accidentally kicked a bottle of tanning gel on the ground.
"It's called tanning gel." Tsunoda explained. "You apply it to get a nice even tan."
"What's that glowing machine?" Ayumi asked, the others having also entered the room.
"That's a tanning machine." Tsunoda replied. "It's used to artificially tan."
"Including the victim, Nishitani Shin-san, there were four people at the salon when the incident happened." Ayumi continued her illustrated diary. "There were store employees
"Tsunoda Yasuo-san, and customers Ozawa Masaru-san and Nagano Takeshi-san. They were all very tall and muscular. After receiving Fumio-kun's call, Detectives Takagi and Chiba came to the salon and egan investigating the case."
"Ozawa-san, what is your relationship with the late Nishitani-san?" Takagi started questioning.
"As fellow bodybuilders, we spoke sometimes." Ozawa replied. "We weren't especially close."
"So, you wouldn't know if anyone resented him or he was involved in any kind of trouble?" Takagi inquired.
"I never heard of anything like that." Ozawa admitted.
"Ozawa-san is a third time student bodybuilding champion." Tsunoda supplied. "It's not as though Nishitani-san was particularly promising."
"Nice to meet you." Nagano Takeshi introduced himself. "I'm Nagano Takeshi."
"Nagano-san is said to be Ozawa-san's rival." Tsunoda added.
"Did you know Nishitani-san?" Takagi asked.
"He was my junior in high school." Nagano answered. "He was a good guy."
"Did you notice anything unusual about Nishitani-san recently?" Takagi inquired.
"He recently said he was broke." Nagano recalled. "Apparently he made a rather huge purchase."
"Did you know what he bought?" Takagi asked.
"I have no idea." Nagano shook his head. "Anyway, I can't believe it. Everyone liked Nishitani. I can't imagine anyone hating him."
"Takagi-san, do you have a minute?" Chiba pulled Takagi off.
"The cause of death is poisoning." Ami reported. "Poison was found in the gel rubbed on his body. We found poison in the gel container, too."
"What about the containers in the other rooms?" Takagi asked.
"We found nothing unusual in them." Chiba confirmed.
"Then, how did the culprit poison the gel?" Conan wondered. "When we arrived, this hallway was dark." he explained. "Since there's only one entrance, it would've been difficult to enter before Nishitani-san and poison the gel without being noticed. Even if the culprit waited for him in the hallway, there would've been no point if they couldn't see his face. In order to poison Nishitani-san, the culprit had to know beforehand which room he would enter."
"And there's only one person who knew which room Nishitani-san would enter." Haibara stated.
"I don't know anything about that." Tsunoda protested.
"You showed customers to their rooms, didn't you?" Chiba pressed.
"That doesn't mean I did it." Tsunoda insisted.
"Then, why was the poisoned gel only in the room?" Takagi asked.
"Maybe it's a coincidence." Tsunoda suggested.
"That would make it an indiscriminate murder." Nagano pointed out.
"Onii-san, are the rooms in this salon different from each other in any way?" Conan wondered.
"Rooms seven, eight and nine in the back have high-powered machines meant for advanced tanners." Tsunoda replied. "The remaining rooms are the same."
"Nishitani typically used standard machines to tan." Nagano noted.
"He suddenly asked to start using the high-powered machines today." Tsunoda recalled.
"Chiba, you're in charge here." Takagi told his younger colleague after they let the bodybuilders off. "I'm going to ask around the university the victim attended."
"We received a call saying there was a huge development in the case." Ayumi continued her illustrated diary.
At the police station's interrogation room...
"You were just embezzling the salon's profits, weren't you?" Chiba cut off Tsunoda's protests. "It's obvious when you compare the salon's books against your bank account balance."
"I didn't kill Nishitani-san." Tsunoda insisted.
"Then, how about this?" Chiba showed him the tanning gel that was bagged as evidence. "Poisoned tanning gel; we found it in your bag."
The next day...
After reviewing Ayumi's next entry of her illustrated diary, Conan realized what truly happened.
In the Beika International University's bodybuilder changing room later...
"I figured you'd show up soon since the contest is coming up." Conan stated, switching on the lights, just as the real culprit opened Nagano's locker. "Did you really have to do all of this; three-time student bodybuilding champion, Ozawa Masaru-san?"
"I just came here to see Nagano-kun." Ozawa stated.
"With a poisoned gel bottle?" Conan quirked a brow. "Ozawa-san, being a three-time champion must be very hard. Remember what Tsunoda-san said? He definitely made it sound like you were expected to win, didn't he? You also have a rival claiming he'll beat you. That must be a lot of pressure. That's why you decided to take your rival out." Conan revealed. "That day, you waited in one of the three advanced tanning rooms for your target to arrive. After confirming he arrived, you entered the two vacant advanced tanning rooms and swapped out the provided tanning gel with your own poisoned gel. You waited for your target to enter a room and retrieved the poisoned gel from the vacant room. While Tsunoda-san was panicking over finding a dead body, you slipped the retrieved poisoned gel bottle into Tsunoda-san's bag."
"Wait a minute." Ozawa objected. "There was no way for me to know when Nishitani-san would come to the tanning salon."
"You couldn't have known exactly." Amuro agreed. "But if you are both regulars, you would be able to approximately guess when he'd arrive."
"Senpai..." Ozawa instantly recognized the university's infamous alumni.
"According to the salon's records, you visited the salon three times in a row." Amuro continued.
"But, weren't you the ones who said you couldn't see people's faces in that dark hallway?" Ozawa reminded. "Besides, I don't have a motive."
"That was the biggest question." Conan concurred. "You don't have the motive to kill Nishitani-san. Because of those black lights illuminating the hallway, you mistook Nishitani-san for Nagano-san, your actual target. Two years ago, Nagano-san replaced most of his teeth with hybrid ceramic implants."
"The resin used in hybrid ceramic implants sometimes glow under black light." Amuro supplied. "That's why you tried to identify Nagano-san by his teeth. But what you didn't know is that since Nishitani-san looked up to Nagano-san, he also had most of his teeth replaced by hybrid ceramic implants recently."
"The big purchase he made was those implants." Conan added.
"So, you made a big mistake." Amuro revealed. "You saw Nishitani-san's teeth glow in the darkness and mistook him for Nagano-san."
"You won't get it, senpai." Ozawa growled. "You don't know how hard it is to have people coming for you; that fear of being ousted. It makes you willing to do anything to stay on top."
Amuro merely sighed as Ozawa charged at him. Side-stepping the younger man, he knocked him out with a chop to the back of the head.
Barely a week later...
"This is the worst." Usagi gritted her teeth, chancing upon Naru's blog and seeing her latest post about her pending marriage. "How come even Naru-chan is getting married when I don't even have a boyfriend? And didn't her post say her fiancé is working for a foreign IT company? I'm so pissed off. She even caught an elite. I don't like it. I can't help but want to interrupt my friends' happiness. I wonder if there is any way... didn't her post say her fiancé is Kanagawa General Hospital? If I go there too..." she giggled.
The next day...
Usagi trailed Naru to hospital, trying to find out which room Naru's fiancé was in.
"Gurio-kun, the person you're sharing your room is indeed something..." Naru sweatdropped, overhearing the two women cause a ruckus around Umino's bunkmate's bed.
"He's a guy named Satou who came into the hospital the same time I did." Umino stated. "He seems to be quite a playboy. He had different girls visit him yesterday and the day before. I heard the reason for his injury is woman-related..."
"I'm going home now, Gurio-kun." Naru kissed her lover on the cheek. "I'll bring some nourishing soup tomorrow."
A few days later...
"What else could feel so good?" Usagi moaned contently in bed with her new lover.
"What's wrong?" Satou nuzzled her neck. "You're smiling all by yourself."
"I'm just happy to be with you." Usagi purred. "Congratulations on discharged from hospital."
"I'm happy too." Satou laughed.
"This is the best." Usagi giggled. "That's right. I'm going to confront that person with this fact. Hello, Naru-chan." she sang making a call to Naru. "Do you know where I am?"
"What is this all of the sudden?" Naru's surprised voice sounded from the other end. "I don't know at all, Tsukino-san."
"Let me tell you this." Usagi bragged. "I'm in a hotel with your fiancé."
"What are you saying?" Naru was completely bewildered.
"Are you too shocked to speak?" Usagi mocked. "Of course you are. Your fiancé just got out of hospital and then I took him from you. Of course you're in shock."
"Gurio-kun is still in hospital." Naru spoke. "I'm not shocked; I'm just speechless because I don't know what you're talking about."
"What?" Usagi exclaimed. "What do you mean? Because... when I asked the nurse at the reception desk, she told me that Umino is sharing a room with another person, so I thought... wait, what is the meaning of this? This guy is not your fiancé?"
"Tsukino-san, you do know Gurio-kun and I have been dating since junior high school, right? And we've never broken up." Naru sighed. "By the way, I heard he's quite a womanizer with many different women coming to visit him every day. That suits you, doesn't it? Goodbye." she ended the call, deleted Usagi's number from her contract list and blocked her former best friend.
