Chapter 207: Did I Do It?

Sometime later...

A panting Sako Manabu with cracked glasses and a bloodied coat slung on his arm entered the Mouri Detective Agency. "Did I do something?" he turned to a confused Mouri.

"You can't remember anything that happened last night?" Mouri inquired, having settled Sako down.

"Not only did I screw up at work, but my girlfriend dumped me." Sako moaned. "So, I went somewhere to drown my sorrows. That much is certain, but when I woke up at home this morning, I have a bump on my head but no other injuries on my body."

"In other words, this is someone else's blood." Mouri concluded.

"Please, will you find out where I was and what I did last night?" Sako pleaded. "I'm worried I might've done something terrible."

"But, if you don't even have a single receipt, then..." Mouri pondered.

"We've got clues." Conan piped in.

"Those are fragrant olive petals." Ran recognized the flower petals stuck on the back of the coat sleeve.

"And look at his shoes." Conan added.

"That's concrete." Mouri observed.

"There's something here, too." Conan plucked out a strand from Sako's nails.

"A golden fiber?" Mouri blinked.

"And finally," Conan shone the black light from his wristwatch, revealing a 'Eden' tattoo on the back of Sako's palm.

After visiting the Eden nightclub and the nearby construction site...

Mouri and Conan determined that something did happen between midnight and 2am.

"Takagi?" Mouri made a call. "There's one unsolved case between midnight and 2 last night. It's a theft. But the crime scene is far away from here, beyond walking distance. Not only that, there were two culprits, and no bloodshed."

"I suddenly remembered." Sako let out a gasp. "The feeling of touching cold, hard white flesh."

"Sonoko sent me this." Ran showed them a funny video featuring Sako Sonoko sent to her.

At the Michiko statue in the town square, they met Chino Atsushi, the one who uploaded the video. After playing a second video which he did not upload, Chino pointed the group to the direction where he saw Sako was returning from.

In front of the abandoned building...

Ran instantly recognized the fragrant olive tree in the yard.

Entering the hall, the three men found the dead Koba Shokichi behind a pillar.

Spotting a glass shard by the body, Conan picked it up, Sako walking over and handed his broken glasses to the boy for confirmation.

"I knew it." Sako muttered, Conan matching the broken off shard perfectly. "I remember now. I pushed him with these hands and turned around and fled."

After Megure's team was called in...

"The victim is Koba Shokichi-san, 76 years old." Takagi reported. "He lived alone in an apartment in the area. He often patrolled the neighborhood at night to tell off drunks and partying youngsters."

"Who are they?" Megure asked, seeing the gathered Hata Leila, Morozumi Tetsuo and Chino.

"They're the people who provided us with the photos and videos." Takagi replied. "And the body was discovered by..."

"So, this is Sako Manabu-san." Megure sighed, seeing the sheepish Mouri before him. "You're claiming you pushed him?"

"The victim struck his head on the pillar." Ami started. "I believe the cerebral contusion was what killed him. He must've been pushed very hard; there's even a bruise on his chest."

"The finger and palm prints collected from the chest of the victim's clothes matched Sako-san's." Takagi informed. "We believe the blood on Sako-san's clothes is the victim's as well."

"What's the estimated time of death?" Megure turned to their coroner.

"Last night between 1 to 2." Ami answered.

"That matches the time Sako-san left the plaza." Mouri added. "A drunk Sako-san probably got into a fight with the victim and..."

"Don't you find it's strange, though?" Conan questioned. "The fiber that was struck beneath Sako-san's fingernails wasn't the victim's." seeing Morozumi's yellow vest, he realized what actually occurred and he tranquilized Mouri. "I've figured out what happened. It's true that Sako-san pushed someone in this abandoned building, but it wasn't the victim, Koba-san. You claimed the following," he reminded Sako. "You pushed someone with both hands and turned around and fled. It doesn't make sense if you pushed Koba-san. If you turned around when you fled, you wouldn't have walked towards the exit. It wasn't Koba-san who you pushed, but the third party at the crime scene."

"But Sako-san's fingerprints were found on the victim's chest." Takagi pointed out.

"He's performing CPR." Ami supplied. "Take a closer look, Takagi. Pushing wouldn't cause this kind of bruising. But if Sako-san was performing chest compressions, then it's a different story."

"Simply put, Sako-san was trying to revive Koba-san, until he got into a fight with the real culprit." Conan continued. "The culprit knocked Sako-san out and he fled, believing him dead. Sako-san awoke sometime later, but the alcohol and blow to the head caused his memory loss."

"Then, who's the true culprit?" Megure questioned,

"Leila-san lied about Sako-san being at Eden all night." Conan started. "By lying about Sako-san being at Eden all night, you fabricated your alibi. When we visited Eden today, there was a burnt smell at the club. A fire broke out in the back of Eden when Sako-san was gone. Atsushi-san, what happened to your watch? Earlier, you used your phone to check the time. Detective Takagi, there was another unsolved case that took place during the time Koba-san was killed, right?"

"There was a theft committed by two culprits." Takagi referred to his notes. "A watch was stolen."

"I found it was strange from the start." Conan added. "The watch didn't match your clothes."

"This is the watch that was stolen last night." Takagi confirmed after Chino pulled out the stolen loot.

"I actually just figured what I'd been missing until now." Conan admitted. "Ran, could you show the Inspector the uploaded video? We should've been looking not at Sako-san, but at the crowd." he told Megure. "I didn't notice it at first since we've only saw him wearing his helmet and work uniform. Morozumi-san, you claimed you hadn't returned to this area since 5pm yesterday. So, what were you doing in that video? How did you know Sako-san was the man who left footprints in the concrete if you just met him today? Are you absolutely sure you didn't meet him elsewhere? Like for example: seeing him here when you killed Koba-san."

"Where's the evidence?" Morozumi demanded.

"Here." Conan handed the bagged golden fiber he bagged to Megure. "That fiber is unique and uncommon. Morozumi-san, it seems to match your jacket perfectly."

"It's his fault for laughing at my outfit." Morozumi sobbed.

Three months earlier...

"Good morning, I am Tsukino Usagi." Usagi introduced herself to her new colleagues at her new workplace, an international trading company. "I'll be in your care from now on." walking to her workspace, she gave her immediate superior, Hayashi Tatsuki, a sultry wink.

Three months later...

After getting informed by her boss that her husband had taken the day off due to an acute pain in the stomach, Hayashi Mikoto took the afternoon off to return home.

Walking towards their bedroom, Mikoto heard voices from the bedroom.

"Tatsuki..." Usagi sang. "You're too much of an animal, I think I've reached my limit." she pouted.

"I'm just getting started." Tatsuki smirked.

"How many times are you planning on doing it?" Usagi cooed.

"Five times, at least." Tatsuki bragged. "You like it too, don't you, Usako?"

"How about your wife?" Usagi inquired. "Isn't the bust period over already?"

"She usually stops at the grocery store or the bakery on the way home." Tatsuki shrugged. "So, there's no need to worry. Let's stop wasting time." he pounced on his lover.

"What are those two doing?" a silently fuming Mikoto stood outside the bedroom. Taking a deep breath, she shifted whatever heavy furniture from the living room in front of the bedroom door. Locating a voice recorder, she taped the resulting conversation from outside the bedroom door.

After thirty minutes, Tatsuki and Usagi finally stopped the horizontal tango and Tatsuki proceeded to go to the kitchen to get some beverages, only to find the door was stuck.

"Are you having some trouble in there, Mr. Hayashi Tatsuki?" Mikoto shouted from outside. "I'm home... my beloved husband isn't feeling well. So, what would I do as his loving wife? I came straight home to check on you. Now, would you care to explain this situation to me?"

"She's just looking after me." Tatsuki stammered.

"As if I'd accept any excuse at this point." Mikoto snapped. "I've already recorded everything on the voice recorder. Nice to meet you." she then heard Usagi from the other side of the door. "I'm Tatsuki's wife, Mikoto."

"Tatsuki, that's not what you told me." Usagi glared. "Now she knows about us."

After all three parties came to an agreement, Mikoto let the two lovers out and they sat in the living room to sort things out.

Eventually, Tatsuki and Mikoto agreed on a divorce and Tatsuki happily went off with Usagi.

Only to come crawling back to Mikoto after finding out that he was not Usagi's only lover and he dumped the blond.
