Road Bumps
The group had been driving along the pathway for several hours. The events at Brunswick Farms and the shady practices that nearly led to their downfall feels almost like a distant memory now. Most of the group sat in the back while Yang towed everyone with Bumblebee, but to stretch his legs, and keep warm, Peter would get up and run alongside the bike for about twenty minutes every hour. It was during this time that Peter looked to the fuel gauge and frowned. He rushed over to the bike and sat behind Yang, sidesaddle, "Hey." Peter started.
"I know what you're going to say." Yang sighed, "The fuel light popped on a little bit ago. I guess I anticipated fueling up in Argus." she groaned as she smacked her forehead a few times, "God, I'm so stupid!"
Peter rubbed Yang's shoulder to try and get her to relax. "Hey, hey, relax. There's no way we could have known that we were going to crash half a train...actually now that I think about it we've done this twice now. Next time we get on a train we should just assume it's gonna crash." he laughed. Yang jerked her right arm back and elbowed Peter in the gut.
"You ass." she laughed. Yang let up on the gas before eventually coming to a stop. The group looked ahead in confusion. Yang sighed, wondering how she'd break the bad news, "Listen everybody," she started, "I've got some bad news and...probably worse news. The bad news is that we're almost out of fuel for Bumblebee. The worse news...well, I'm sure you all noticed it's getting late. We won't have a shelter this time around unless," she pointed to the sign just ahead of them, "we take a gamble."
"What sort of gamble?" Blake asked.
Yang rubbed the back of her head nervously, "Well, we follow the sign and go a little off course for the chance at shelter and fuel, or...we end up adding a week or more to our journey because we decided to go off course for shelter."
"So let me get this straight," Weiss stated as she rubbed her head, "Shelter is guaranteed for the night, but the chance we take is adding a week or more to our journey depending on if there's even fuel there or not?" Yang nodded in response. Weiss frowned at the idea, "I don't know. That seems kinda risky. What do you think Ruby?"
Ruby cupped her chin in thought, "It seems risky. Buuuut..." she looked at everyone and how cold they looked, "At the very least, perhaps we'll be able to find something to keep us warm. And who knows, we may find some fuel too. But ultimately it should be up to a vote." Ruby stated, "So, raise your hand if you're willing to bet on red (that's me, heheh)." Ruby raised her hand, followed by Peter who was willing to follow his leader. Blake rolled her eyes before raising her hand with a smirk and soon Yang did the same.
Four agreed, but that still left the other four. Ruby stared at Weiss, desperately awaiting an answer. Ruby stared and stared, as Weiss looked into Ruby's eyes she couldn't help but feel like her leader was trying to guilt trip her, "Oh, fine!" Weiss yelled as she threw her hand in the air, "What else do we have to lose, right?" With a majority choosing to take the chance Yang started up the bike again and turned right, heading towards the mysterious village called Tor-ahnto. "Geez, I hope we at least find something better than canned meat and beans." Weiss complained.
Peter adjusted his body on the bike so that he sat regular. He then let out a chuckle, "I hope we at least find a box of condoms." he said quietly as he snickered. Yang had an unamused smirk on her face as she jerked her hand back and love tapped Peter's right knee. "AGH!" Peter took in a sharp breath as he held his leg in pain, "Joke, it was a joke...Oh sweet jiminy christmas, that hurt so much. I think I'd rather get hit in the nads. Holy crap."
"That bad, huh?" Yang asked with an apologetic look, "My bad, you looked pretty mobile on it, I thought you were all good." the group continued to the small village, as they got closer to it they could see lights on in homes and people walking about, "Oh thank the gods." Yang sighed, "I don't think I've held my breath for that long before. Like, maybe one time when I went swimming, but other than that." For the first time in a while, Yang was able to show a bright smile.
As they pulled into the town the group gained many looks, some looked surprised, others confused, but many looked hopeful. They looked as if they just met their saviors. "We are getting...much weirder looks than I thought." Peter mentioned. Yang began pulling into a inn, as she hit the front gates the bike began to sputter and once she was halfway through to the small parking lot, the bike died. "Dang, guess we didn't make it. Looks like we'll have to walk the rest of the way gang!" Peter shouted to the back getting a chuckle from Weiss and Ruby and even a smile from Blake. Peter got off the bike and began pushing it and the trailer while Yang steered. Eventually, the group stopped and took up three parking spaces for the bike and trailer.
"Hopefully they don't hit us with a citation." Yang said as she put down the kickstand on her bike. The others began piling out of the trailer and began to stretch out their bodies after being stuck on the trailer for several hours. Yang scratched the back of their head and noticed an older man approaching them, "Um...can we help you, sir?"
The man was kinda tall, probably in his mid forties. He had a bushy dirty blond beard and lighter blond hair. He had a more high and tight haircut and wore a red flannel, jeans, and suspenders. The man shifted his eyes back and forth, he then saw Ruby stretch her arms out and noticed Crescent Rose on her back, "A-Are you huntsman?" he asked with a hopeful sounding voice. The others didn't answer, but they all seemed to look at each other in confusion which led the man to his answer, "Then god has answered us!" he said gleefully as he threw his hands in the air.
The group looked at each other with worried expressions, "I'm assuming you need huntsman for help." Ruby asked with a saddened expression, not exactly ready to go back to fighting Grimm so soon.
The man nodded furiously, "Yes. It...you see, there was this little girl, Sally, she went missing a few days ago." the man shuffled and he swallowed a lump in his throat, "We don't have contact with the main part of the kingdom, so getting huntsman out here is only possible through letter." he smiled, "But to think we'd get a reply so soon!" The group all began looking at each other nervously which led the man to frown, "You...aren't here to help us, are you?"
"We're sorry, but we are here on completely different circumstances." Oscar apologized.
The man shook his head before giving a nod of determination, "Even so! Would you be so kind as to--"
"Not a chance. We have our own problems right now." Qrow said as he pushed past the man, "Like we need fuel, food," he took out his flask and twirled it hearing that only a little bit was left, "And something to drink." The man looked down, distraught and defeated.
"Don't listen to him." Peter said as he cut in behind Qrow, giving him an irritated glare, "Look, we aren't exactly very liquid right now, and we could use things like fuel, food, drink and a place to stay." Peter explained, "We'll find this girl if you are willing to give us those things as our payment." it was a longshot, but Peter was banking that these people were desperate for help.
"YES!" the man cheered as he began vigorously shaking Peter's hand, "Thank you, thank you, lad! I promise the local people here will do whatever we can to assist you while you stay, be it food, drink or whatever." The man stepped back and bowed to the group as his smile grew wider, "Name's Jack Schneider, me and my sister run this inn. You all are welcome to stay here as long as you please just...please find the lass, yeah? We're a small community and...it doesn't feel right with one less than usual." Peter nodded and the two men shook hands. Jack then turned on his heel and started walking back to his office.
"Alright," Peter said as he turned around, "Uh, group huddle, yeah?" he asked as locked his hands together. Peter, RWBY, and Oscar wrapped their arms around each other's shoulders as Maria stood to the side, "Okay, so we have a good thing right now. But now the question comes...do we search for the girl now, or tomorrow? I need to know how good you girls are right now. I'll still go on my own, but of you aren't up for it right now then I understand."
"Um, we aren't just going to let you do everything." Weiss said as she rolled her eyes, "Geez, it's like you try to get yourself killed sometimes."
"Weiss is right, we need to make ourselves useful too. So we'll help you in anyway we can, right guys?" Ruby said as she looked at Yang and Blake.
Blake nodded, "Absolutely."
"Hell yeah!" Yang cheered.
Once the team agreed to help out, they met up with Jack to get more information while Maria and Oscar talked to his sister about getting some rooms for them. "Welcome!" Jack said with a smile as he tried his best to quickly clean his office of all the clutter. He then moved his take out from his desk and put it on the chair behind him so that it was out of the way, "Welcome," he said again, almost out of breath, "what is it that you need?"
"Well," Peter started, "Maybe we need a little bit of information? Like, where was she last seen? What dangers can we expect around here? Is there any issues with Grimm?"
Jack frowned as he looked at the group. Sighing, he walked to the door and locked it and then closed the blinds before sitting back down again. "Look, I'm gonna be honest. We aren't expecting you to find Sally...alive." the group's eyes widened in surprise. Jack took a deep breath and interlocked his hands together, "Sally was out playing the other day. She had gotten separated from her family and has been missing the past three days." he sighed, "There's an old and abandoned Dust mine up the hill a ways. It has become a bit of a hiding spot for Grimm. The few that come to the village usually come from there. It's possible that she was attacked by one of those creatures." Jack frowned again as he rubbed the back of his head, "Well, I say 'creatures' but truth is we believe it's just 'creature,' singular, not plural."
"What makes you say that?" Weiss asked, "Everybody knows Grimm are usually in packs."
"Yes, but we believe this is one of those 'rare' or 'special' Grimm. A mixture of ape and human the locals have taken to calling it 'Sasquatch.'" Jake explained.
"Sasquatch?" Blake asked, "Sounds fake."
"Believe me, it's very real. We've seen it walking through town a couple of times. There hasn't been an incident where someone was actually hurt by it, but we don't know what happens when it's provoked."
"Why haven't you had huntsman take care of it already?" Yang asked as she crossed her arms.
"We've tried." Jake gestured to his cabinet. Opening it and pulling out some manilla folders he showed dozens of letters from huntsman who canceled their contract on the 'Grimm Clearing' mission. "All of them the same, dozens. 'To heavily armored,' or 'continuously escapes into caves.' They have no way of stopping it." Jack leaned back in his chair and scratched his chin, "It isn't all that bad, the creature keeps away the smaller, more dangerous Grimm from the town. But..." he sighed, "Look, we just haven't experienced something like this since the creature moved in a couple years ago. Needless to say we're a little shocked."
Peter frowned, They just let this thing stay? Even so, the people knew that it was dangerous out there yet they let their daughter run up ahead? Either people are stupid or they're lying to us. "Okay, fine. Just point us in the direction little Sally was last seen."
Just outside the town was a small clearing of forest that had multiple trails. Not too far in the distance a decent sized hill could be seen. "Okay team," Ruby started, "Jack said that Sally was last seen around this area. So let's split up and look for clues!"
"Great idea!" Peter exclaimed as he finished putting on his costume except for the mask, "Shaggy, you and Scooby check the basement," he said while pointing to Ruby and Blake respectively, "Velma, you check the library," he said pointing at Weiss, "And Daphne and I will check the bedrooms." he said while pointing to Yang, "Alright gang, let's get that ghost!"
The girls all looked at each other with confused expressions before turning back to Peter, "So, are you referencing something, oooooor..?" Ruby asked.
Peter slumped his shoulders and sighed, "You know what, I need to just make a list of all the things that I need to watch with you guys. That way if I get back, we'll be prepared." The team split apart and began searching for something, anything, that could lead to Sally. As Peter looked around the ground he began noticing some massive footprints. Kneeling down he got a closer look at how massive and deep the foot print was, as well as the direction it was heading, "Hm, guess it was heading towards the hills." he said to himself.
"Guys, I found something!" Blake shouted out. Peter and the others rushed to her voice. As he ran to his friend, Peter took notice of slight divots in the snow, as if new snow was covering small craters in the ground. These craters so happen to lead towards the hill in the distance, he assumed they were older prints. The group finally met up with Blake as she lifted up some branches of a shrub to show a small jacket stuck in the foliage.
Weiss brought out her scroll and pulled up the picture of Sally that was given to them, it wasn't the most accurate but the parents had explained that was the jacket she was wearing when she disappeared. Sally herself was a small girl, no older than nine or ten, with braided brown hair and bright green eyes. She also had two missing front teeth. "That's definitely her jacket." Weiss sighed. Her and the girls looked down with saddened expressions, "We...better report back what we found."
Peter squinted his lenses, "No." he said bluntly which lead to the girls giving him confused expressions, "This isn't enough evidence for us to call it quits yet. All this tells us is that she was here. There's no blood, there's no other signs of her, just the jacket." Peter pointed to the small craters on the ground that were covered up by the fresh snow, "Look at the divots in the ground. I bet she was running away from something and it followed her."
"How do you know?" Blake asked.
"I don't, but if nothing else we can deal with this Sasquatch." Peter swallowed a lump in his throat and chuckled, "If I'm being honest, this is a bit of a soul read. And I'll gratefully take a couple years of bad luck if it means finding this girl." Feeling Peter's determination, the girls nodded to each other before following his lead.
Peter began leading the girls past the brush and forestry, as he followed the divots in the ground, to the large hill. Once at the hill Peter noticed and opening that led to a cave or cavern, except the hole in the hill was man made, "Looks like it's that old Dust mine Jack mentioned." Blake mentioned. Peter looked up to see a plank of wood hanging by one corner, covered in snow. He reached his hand up and wiped the snow off the wood revealing the Schnee Family Crest burned into the wood. Weiss frowned and sighed as she looked down almost shamefully. "Hey, it's not your fault. Who knows how old this mine is. It may even be before your father." Blake assured as she pat the former heiress on the shoulder, leading her to smile.
"Yeah Weiss, no need to let some 'sins of thy father' crap get you down. We know it isn't your fault some Grimm is just hiding out in here." Yang added.
Peter clicked his tongue as the group began down the mine shaft, "Spider Sense is blaring. I think there is still some Dust ore deposits in here so...no guns. I don't want us getting caved in or blown up. I mean, if Yang's arm loses the rest of her body it'll have to get a complete prosthetic replacement."
"Wait...wouldn't that just be building a Yang Robot?" Ruby asked.
Yang shook her head and tried her hardest to not smack Peter in the back of the head, "Wow. What a dumb joke." The group continued down the shaft, the girls turned on the flashlights on their scrolls so that they could all see ahead. Eventually the group came to a bit of a problem as the path split into five different paths. "What now?" Yang asked, "We could obviously stick together and just check each path individually."
"No, too slow." Peter said as he shook his head.
"Pete--Er...Spidey's right." Ruby nodded, "We need to be quick and efficient if we want to find Sally or, if not, then at least that Sasquatch. We should split up."
Peter nodded, "Right, Ruby and Weiss, you should go left. Blake and Yang go right. I'll head down the middle."
"Are you sure?" Yang asked with a worried expression, "We can save one path for us to travel together as a team. It'd be safer."
Peter shook his head, "I'll be fine. I survived a shotgun blast at point blank range and almost lost my leg. I think I'll be okay."
Weiss sighed as she held her scroll in front of her face for Peter to grab, "Even so, you still have to be able to see what's in front of you." she smiled. Peter looked down at her scroll and shrugged, slightly confused, "Ugh, take the stupid scroll you dolt!"
Peter quickly grabbed the scroll and webbed it to his left shoulder giving him a hands free light. The girls all stared at Peter as they all seemed to have an expression of envy. "Do...you girls want shoulder lights too?" Peter asked. The girls nodded quickly and Peter webbed their scrolls to their shoulders as well, "Okay, now that we're set let's move out."
Ruby and Weiss went down the left path. Weiss had to stick close behind Ruby so she didn't get left behind in the dark. Ruby gripped Crescent Rose tighter as the two moved down the pathway, as they walked they took notice to a caved in area to their right, "I guess we can't go that way." Ruby chuckled.
"Ha ha." Weiss said as she rolled her eyes, "Forget about that, look at all these carts. They're clear full of Dust." Weiss mentioned as they past by a set of mine carts.
"So?"
"Soooo, that means there was a cave-in here, Ruby. People died digging for this Dust. and That cave-in was probably the cause of it!" Weiss yelled out before clutching to Ruby's cloak so she didn't get lost.
Ruby gulped at Weiss' words, "Oh." The two continued along their path before they started hearing voices, "You hear that?" Ruby asked, "Oh no! What if it's ghosts!"
Weiss smacked Ruby in the back of the head and shook slightly, "S-Shut up you dolt! There's n-no such thing as...ghosts." she gulped, "S-S-So we will have to check it out...unfortunately."
With Yang and Blake, the duo traveled down the right pathway. As they walked down the dark tunnel they saw the dozens of Dust ores stuck in the walls of the mines as well as mining equipment that littered the ground. "This seems kinda strange, right?" Blake asked, "All this mining equipment looks fresh, but this mine looked like it was abandoned for decades.
Yang shook her head, "I couldn't tell you. But I know what you mean." she mentioned, "I mean, doesn't it seem like the deeper in the mines we go the more currently used it looks?" Blake's faunus ears twitched as she heard something peculiar. She held her hand out and she stopped Yang from moving forward anymore. "What's up?" Yang asked, "You hear something weird?"
"Yeah," Blake squinted her eyes slightly, "Turn off the flashlights." Yang and Blake turned off their lights and Blake kept Yang behind her, "If something is coming this way, it's best if they can't see us." Blake whispered.
"Uhhh, great, but what about me?" Yang asked.
"Well that's why you're behind me." Blake smirked. The two hid out behind a cart while Blake peeked out around the side. She squinted her eyes to adjust to the dark and saw a figure emerge from the tunnel. As it got closer Blake could see it was a kid. "Sally?"
"Sally!?" Yang repeated causing the little girl to scream in surprise.
"Ay, where yew think yer goin' lil' brat!" a male voice called out. Suddenly Sally disappeared from Blake's view and went back down the mine shaft.
"No! No! Let go of me!" Sally yelled out as she was taken further down, her voice echoing throughout the mine.
Blake unsheathed Gambul Shroud and grunted in frustration, "Good news and bad news. Good news: Sally is alive and okay. Bad news: She's been kidnapped by some weirdos."
Yang growled as she slammed her fists together, "Those damn bastards. Who knows what their plans are for her. If they hurt an innocent little girl," Yang closed her eyes and opened them again, her eyes turning red from her anger, "then I'll have to hurt them." The two girls began running after Sally, the further they went down the mine shaft they began to notice wires and lighting from lamps. "What the? Are people staying down here or something?" Yang asked. Finally, after running for what felt like forever the duo burst through a wooden door.
Through the door was an open area where the girls saw several armed men, one with Sally in his arms, and Ruby and Weiss on the other side of the room. "Wait, Ruby, Weiss?" Blake asked.
"Careful!" Ruby shouted, "These guys have Sally!"
"That's roight." the man that held Sally said. The small girl squirmed and jerked around in his arms until he knocked her out with a quick chop to her neck, "And if yew know waht's best for 'er yew won't come any closer." the man had a large grin spread across his face. The girls grimaced, it seems that despite having the upper hand and cornering these two-bit villains, it was they who were cornered. The group then heard a loud scream coming from within the middle row of the mine shafts behind them. "Hahaha. Well, well. Seems you've awoken the Sasquatch."
With Peter, he had chosen to go down the middle path...alone. Was that a bad idea? Who knows. "Hindsight is 20-20." he said to himself, "So I guess we won't know until this ordeal is over." As Peter walked down the shaft he felt his Spider Sense go off. Peter ducked and right next to him the wall crumbled and cratered from the force of a massive blow. "WOAH! What the hell was--" Peter turned his body and looked up to see an eight foot tall creature with long hair covering its body, long monstrous arms, and a skeletal armor on its chest and face. Peter's lenses widened in surprise as he came face-to-face with the Sasquatch, "...Oh. Hello." Peter said with a voice crack.
"AAAAAAAUGH!" the creature yelled out as it brought it's two massive arms in the air. Peter rolled backwards to avoid the creature slamming down on him. Immediately the creature continued to sway its arms from left to right trying to hit the vigilante. Peter continued back up, ducking and avoiding each swipe thrown at him.
"Hey, we just met. And like I always say," he grunted as he ducked another swipe, "Dinner and a movie before you try and take me out. WOAH!" Peter contorted his body like a coil and used his hand to roll backward before popping back up onto his feet, "Get it? 'Take me out.' like, as in a date AND as in killing me. Heheh, it's a double entandre."
"AAAAAAAUGH!"
Peter sighed and slumped his shoulders, "You know, even my villains gave me something to bounce off of. You can only react to 'Augh' and 'Raugh' so much." Peter ducked another swipe and this time countered by throwing an uppercut to the creature's gut. The creature didn't react and instead it was Peter who reeled his hand back and shook it in pain, "Oh, you're a strong one, huh?" Peter continued to dodge the swipes of the Sasquatch and sent quick jabs to the creature's gut. The creature than used its long arms to its advantage and put Peter in a massive bear hug. As the creature crushed down all Peter felt was his back pop. "Oh, thanks. I felt a little sore from carrying my teammates--No, no. That's mean. I shouldn't say that, it's a team effort." Peter broke free of the creature's grasp and performed a mid-air cartwheel kick to the Sasquatch's chin. Peter landed, looked up to the creature and widened his lenses in surprise, before squinting and gaining a smile visible even through his mask.
Back with the girls, they were still stuck in place, completely unable to do anything without Sally getting hurt. "You damn bastards!" Yang seethed, "What the hell is wrong with you? Kidnapping a little girl! Have you no shame? No morals? You don't mess with kids, you dick!"
"Kidnap?" the man holding Sally asked, "This ain't no kidnappin' more like...a rescue. Yeah. See, wees found this lil girl wonderin' round the dangerous forest all alone. She was quite scared you see, she had been separated from her parents. So we're gonna take her back to town once she's warmed up and ask for a nice reward."
Ruby stamped her foot in frustration, "If you were doing the right thing like you claim you would've taken her back to town when you found her. And you wouldn't ask for a reward either!"
"Stupid little girl, aren't you?" one of the other men mentioned with a laugh. The girls went silent again as another screeching sound was heard. Then, out of the blue, a gigantic body came flying into the room and landing on one of the many crates that littered it. It was the Sasquatch the girls heard about.
"AH! It's that Sasquatch Grimm!" Ruby yelled.
"Faunus, actually." The girls, and the strange men, turned their attention to the entrance to the middle tunnel as Spider-Man stood in the door frame with what looked to be the head of the Grimm in his hand, "See, this Grimm isn't real at all. Instead it was a costume created by these chuckle heads who have been using it to scare off the residents from coming to the mine. They've been swindling these townsfolk for inflated Dust prices for years, and they didn't know it came from their own back door."
The man holding Sally cocked an eyebrow in confusion and turned to Blake and Yang, "Who the 'ell is this guy?"
"Ummm, Spider-Man? Duh." Yang scoffed.
"Remember Yang, we're outside of Vale, Spidey may not be as well known." Blake pointed out.
The man growled in frustration, "Look, I don't care who this bug is, I--" the man was cut off as he felt Sally yanked from his arms via webline. The man could only star wide eyed as he looked at the girls grip their weapons tighter, each gaining a devious grin, "Ha...Now, I know what you're thinking. 'Should we kill this man' and the answer...might surprise you."
After a short "discussion" with the two-bit villains, RWBYS were able to return to Tor-ahnto with Sally perfectly okay. "Swindlers you say?" Jack said scratching his head as he looked at the men webbed up, "Damn, and to think they were right under our noses. The man nodded as Sally was safely returned to her family, "Well, a promise is a promise. We have some rooms for your group as well as plenty of fuel and food.
"Um," Ruby started, "Sorry, but how long is the ride to Argus?"
Jack scratched the back of his, "Hmmm...probably about a week." Ruby slumped her shoulders in disappointment, "By walking." Ruby then let out a breath of relief at the fake out, "Probably about four days driving." the group nodded and thanked Jack and decided to call it a day.
Peter and the girls met up with Oscar and Maria who stood outside and waited for them on the second floor of the inn, "We've gotten a couple of rooms." Maria explained, "The rooms seem to be made with the idea of luxury and quality, not quantity of customers. So there's only one bed per room."
"Ope, looks like you and I are sharing a bed, Oscar." Peter mentioned, "Don't worry, I don't toss and turn that much." he joked.
Maria's lenses squinted in confusion, "Oh? You aren't going to share a room with Yang? We went through so much trouble to get you two the honeymoon suite."
Peter and Yang's faces reddened in embarrassment, "WHAT!?" they shouted in unison. The girls snickered at the couple's expense. "But we aren't married." the two, again, said in unison.
"I know, but how often does this opportunity arise." Maria said with a wink and a smile. "Truth be told, I want to be able to talk to Ruby about her power, but it was a good excuse, huh?"
Once morning came, the group was up and running once again. Qrow was crocked, Bumblebee was all fueled up and had some extra fuel canisters and the group had a good supply of food to last the next four days. "We all good?" Yang asked as she gained a thumbs up from the group. With that she hit the gas and again the group started on their journey. "So we're just treating this stroke of luck as filler right?"
"Yep/Yeah/Of course." Peter, Ruby, Blake and Weiss all agreed.
Wait, what? What? I can't have cool ideas? Dude, when Neo meets Cinder Little Miss Malachite tells them that Qrow and them left 'a couple of weeks' ago. Do you know how weird that is? So the choices are, either the group is in Argus for like two weeks, or Ruby and the gang are almost a week late showing up. Huh...yeah, I guess that makes sense.
Day four of the journey...
The ride, long and bumpy as it was, was one thing that nobody anticipated: it was really boring. After Tor-ahnto there wasn't anything that stood out, just trees and snow. Peter stretched his arms and popped his back along the railing of the trailer, "God, I'm bored out of my gourd." he complained, "Hey, Maria, you're pretty old, right? You're bound to know some things. Like...why you know about Ruby's eyes things that I just found out about back at the farm, thanks for the heads up guys."
Maria sighed, "It was...a long time ago. Back when I was still young. It was the last time my eyes would ever be useful." she explained, "You see, many years ago I was just a wandering huntsman. I traveled the land and fought Grimm. I used my eyes to see the world, and I used them to stop Grimm in their tracks." Maria sighed, "As I'm sure you're aware, that isn't exactly an ability you can just go around showing and telling people...it's an ability that'll paint a target on your back. One that'll get you killed." as she said that Ruby gulped, "Eventually all my running led me to my final stand...for my eyes obviously, since I'm very much alive. It was maybe...thirty or so years ago, I was ambushed by a group of bandits. They were good, maybe a little better than I thought, I underestimated them and for that I lost my sight." she sighed, "On the verge of death I emerged victorious, 'a fighter to the end' my opponent told me...but I wasn't. I went into hiding not long after."
Qrow's eyes widened in surprise as he began to realize who Maria truly was, "I-I can't believe it." he said. Peter cocked an eyebrow in surprise that Qrow was showing a sudden interest in something. "You're the Grimm Reaper." Peter had to stop himself from laughing, Lame name. he thought. Qrow continued, "You were a legend. Then you...disappeared." Qrow looked down, almost in disappointment.
"How does a legend just disappear?" Oscar asked.
"Never used you name, you never showed your face." Qrow continued, "A lot of us just assumed you were lying low or in hiding. Eventually we concluded that you were dead. But...the stories about you! I based my weapon off yours. I wanted to be just as good as the Grimm Reaper." Peter smiled, he could tell there was genuine heart when Qrow said that.
Maria shook her head, "Well I'm nothing but a disappointment, so you're well on your way."
"It's the alcoholism." Peter chimed in, gaining a smack in chest from Ruby.
Blake shook her head in confusion, "What do you mean?"
"Well, obviously I mean that Qrow is an alcoholic." Peter chuckled, again receiving a smack on his chest from Ruby.
Maria sighed, "Child, a huntress' duty is to protect others to the bitter end. But after I lost my eyes...I only ever looked after myself. Even after my surgery. I was afraid someone would find me again, finish what the others started." she shook her head, "You shouldn't aspire to be like me. Especially when some of you are stronger than me already." she said as she looked back to Peter, "It's...comforting knowing your generation seems worthy of inheriting this world. I just wish I could have left it in better shape for you." she sighed.
"Well, maybe you can do something now." Ruby said with a smile, "Teach me to use my eyes the way you did."
Peter clapped his hands together and laughed, "I second that motion. It'd be nice to have a screen nuke in our pockets if we start to get overrun."
Maria cocked one of her lenses in confusion, "Screen...nuke?" she asked.
"It's a one use item in a game that clears the entire screen of enemies." Ruby explained. As she said that she heard her scroll going off, "It's Jaune!" she shouted excitedly, the news causing Yang to brake into a powerslide so she could also hear. Ruby clicked 'accept' on her scroll and put him on speaker, "Hello?"
"RUBY!" Jaune shouted excitedly, "Oh, thank you! I've been waiting to see your signal ever since we got to the city!"
"The city?" Ruby asked. She began moving her scroll and followed where the bars got stronger, it led further up the road the group was driving down. "That way, Yang! We'll be there soon, Jaune." Yang hit the gas and drove up the pathway, up a hill where the land seemed to almost magically switch from a snowy environment to a coastal hillside. Over the ridge the group looked down below to see the walled off city of Argus. At last they had arrived.
Yang smirked and faced the group, "Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived in Argus."
To be continued...
A/N: There we are folks, Argus. This was a little different, sure but like...logically it should take longer to go around the mountains and through the snow on a motorcycle than taking a straight shot with a train right? Like, that always bothered me with RT in the last few seasons, their timeline is absolutely fucked.
Anyways, on to some cool things. Tor-ahnto is...well, it's supposed to be Toronto, or rather represent Canada in some way. Like, my thought process was these guys all had Canadian English accents and were rather hospitable. The Sasquatch? Well, I thought it was a cool idea that could be done. Also kinda funny if it was just a guy in a suit just like on Earth.
Now, I want to make a quick announcement that I think some of you may like...
...
You ready?
Ooky Spooky Skeltons 2: Spooky Ooky Skeltons: The Reckoning (Yes, This Whole Thing Is The Title)
That's right, we're bringing back a Halloween special, but this special is EXTRA special. Why? Crossover. It's a crossover with Fast Times, FINALLY Ben and Peter can see each other (non-canonically). And to make it even more special, It will be told through different perspectives. If you read the special through this fic you will get to see Peter's side of things and his ending. If you read it through the other fic you'll see Ben's side of things and his ending.
That being said, it won't be four parts like last time. Probably two, simply because I have to make 2 versions of the same chapter. But, hey let's have some fun right?
Oh, also don't be surprised if it goes after Halloween, I'm starting kinda late after all.
Okay, remember to Follow, Favorite and leave those sweet sweet reviews.
