The day after the full moon, Remus had been in no mood to deal with his mates; his body was aching. His friends had left him after they'd been patched up for him to rest. As he lay in his bed with the curtains draw around it, he heard a familiar voice; it was Elizabeth's. He had listened to the quiet conversation between the two about her condition, with Madam Pomfrey instructing her to sleep and take a rest. He hoped that she was ok.
Dinner was approaching, and Remus felt strong enough to head down to the great hall to eat. After class, his mates had come to join him, bringing him their notes and what homework they had. Remus noted that his friends always took detailed notes on the day after the full moon. Remus saw how exhausted his friends looked and felt sorry, "I'm sorry." He breathed out, an immense sense of guilt rising within him. "Remus, you've got to stop saying sorry. You have nothing to apologise for." James ruffled his hair, the look in his eyes sincere.
"I know, but you're exhausted, and it's my fault." Remus felt like he was going to cry, "Mate, you don't make us help during the moon. That's a decision we made together. If we didn't want to help, we wouldn't. But you're our best mate, and we're not letting you deal with this alone anymore." Sirius smiled at Remus, punching him lightly in the arm. "Oi, don't start getting sappy on us; we've got to head down for dinner. The three boys helped him stand. His muscles aching from the transformation. They steadied him until he found his balance before the 4 of them left the hospital wing.
Remus kept his head down as he entered the great hall. He didn't need people to see him looking like hell. They made their way to their usual spot, where Remus piled his plate high with food. He was starving; with all the energy he had exerted over the night, Remus felt as if he could eat everything on the Gryffindor table. Remus was stuffing his face when Marlene sat next to him, with Alice and Frack joining her. Lily walked past to sit next to the 6th year students that she was friends with,
"Where's Lizzie?" Remus asked. His mates and Marlene looked at him with wide eyes, not that he noticed. "She wasn't feeling great today. She took the morning classes off and felt rubbish after class today, so she's back at the dorm sleeping." Marlene replied, her eyes flicking between Remus and James, his eyebrow raised. Remus let out a hum in acknowledgement. Before turning back to his dinner.
After dinner, Remus headed back to the dorm. He didn't have a lot of energy to do any of his work today, so he planned to go straight to sleep then get up early to start on his homework. Peter and Sirius sat at one of the tables in the common room doing their homework. James took a seat next to Marlene. Marlene was engrossed in the latest edition of Witch Weekly and had lots to talk to her about. "He called her Lizzie again." He ran a hand through his hair before stretching, "He did. Do you think he fancies her? Like Liz doesn't like anyone calling her Lizzie. However, when Remus called her that the other day she didn't care at all. When I brought it up with her, she ended up blushing," Marlene replied; the two sat back on the sofa, thinking, "You know, she admitted that she thinks he's handsome and funny." James's eyes lit up; he felt so happy that she was interested in Moony. James wanted nothing more for Remus to stop acting like he was disgusting and start acting like the teenager he was. He wanted Remus to not be so scared. "She said she isn't looking for a relationship though, she just wants to be his friend." James' heart dropped a little, but he was sure that both would go for each other if Remus said he was interested.
"I think they'd make a nice couple. I think Remus fancies her. He hasn't said anything, and he never would. The idiot rarely tells us what he's thinking a lot of the time, but I think if I were to ask him, he'd tell me." She nodded in agreement. Both of them wanted to see the two together.
Remus woke early the next day and dragged himself to the bathroom for a shower. He didn't want to see his body in the mirrors, so he covered them with towels. He stripped off his pj's before getting into the shower. His body was still tender from the transformation, but the hot water felt nice on his stiff muscles. After the shower, he quickly got dressed and grabbed all the stuff he needed to do his work. The common room was empty, so he decided to spread his stuff all over one of the tables. He quickly set to work on his homework, and as time passed, more and more students began to emerge from the dorms.
He leaned back in his chair, his back and shoulders cracking as he did so. He locked eyes with Elizabeth, who was staring at him. "Morning, Lizzie! Hope you're feeling better." Remus saw the slight grimace that formed on her face, and his smile dropped, "Hey. I'm feeling much better." And without another word, she left. Remus heart sank; had he made her angry?
For the next few weeks, things had been weird between Remus and Elizabeth, and everyone could see it. It had created an odd dynamic between the two groups of friends. Remus didn't know what he had done to make Elizabeth weird around him, and Elizabeth didn't know how to act around him anymore. The photos had messed up her feelings, a longing to be friends with Remus and also hurt, hurt as he didn't remember her.
Over the next few weeks, James and Marlene had grown closer in their efforts to figure out what the hell was going on between the two idiots. They had much to discuss after having witnessed a very cold interaction on Remus part towards Elizabeth. The two had had enough. Marlene had been observing Elizabeth carefully, and she'd begun to notice a pattern. Every couple of night, as they were going to bed, she'd see Elizabeth use Lumos, and through the crack of the curtains, she saw her flicking through some things. Marlene found this very curious. She'd never seen her do this before until recently. So she decided to tell James.
"Elizabeth has been acting really weird at night. She keeps going through these same letters or pictures every couple of nights. She's never done this before." She told James, resting her head in his lap. James looked at her curiously. "This seems like a weird thought, but what if they've been writing to each other. Like maybe they're hiding something from us." Marlene shot up, looking at James with wide eyes, "What if they kissed or had a moment together. Maybe they feel awkward around each other now and don't know how to act."
"Mars, you have to get whatever she's been looking at." So with that, the two had a plan. The plan was to get whatever had been Elizabeth's focus to then confront them. They decided that during Friday's Quidditch practise. Marlene would search for the things.
Friday came, and it was time to start the plan. After Elizabeth had left for practice, Marlene rushed upstairs, locking the door behind her. She knew that it would look bad if someone caught her going through Elizabeth's things. She looked through her trunk and bedside table, but she couldn't find anything. Marlene was frustrated. She lay down on Elizabeth's bed. "Where the hell did you put them?" She grabbed the pillow, screaming into it. Then she felt something. She sat up, feeling the pillow; there was something inside. She slipped her hand inside and pulled out the envelope. It was the envelope she had received the same bay the broom kits had arrived.
Marlene and James met each other in the library; the library was pretty empty when they arrived. Most students had given up on studying because it was finally the weekend. The two sat at a table near the back of the library, "She hid it in her pillow. Why would she hide it there?" James shrugged his shoulders; he had no idea. "She's going to kill me." Marlene pulled everything out of the envelope.
The first couple of photos were of Elizabeth, "She looks the same." James remarked. Marlene laughed; she really did look the same. They flipped to the next photo when James grabbed it out of Marlene's hand, "Woah, what the hell!" Marlene smacked James on the back of the head. James didn't say anything. He just kept looking at the photo, "It's Remus. That's Remus!" James jabbed his finger at the young boy in the picture. They both looked at each other. Neither one had been expecting that. Photo after photo was of the two smiling children. The two were absorbed in the pictures that they didn't notice a furious Elizabeth approach them.
"How dare you touch my stuff!" Elizabeth was seething; she ripped the pictures out of their hands. James and Marlene jumped in their chairs. "Shhhh!" Madam Pince rounded the corner. Elizabeth whipped around. "I'm sorry, Liz." Elizabeth let out a laugh, "Sorry? If you were sorry, you wouldn't have touched my stuff." Marlene looked like she was about to cry. "You and Remus used to be friends," James spoke up.
"It doesn't matter." She whispered harshly at the two before storming away. James and Marlene scrambled to follow her out of the library. Marlene grabbed her arm, pulling her back, "Listen, you've been acting strange around Remus recently, and I saw you looking at these at night, and I thought it had something to do with him." She ripped her arm out of her grasp; James grabbed both their arms and pulled them into a free classroom nearby. "I'm sorry, Liz, but it was horrible watching you and Remus being cold to each other. Remus had no idea why you were annoyed at him, and he was upset."
Elizabeth sat down on a desk and ran her hands through her hair, "He doesn't remember me, ok! He doesn't remember me. When he called me Lizzie, it felt weird, like he knew me, but he didn't. I wanted pictures from my mum. Because you might not realise this, but it's shit having your childhood best friend not remember you." James and Marlene looked at each other, "Why didn't you tell him?" Elizabeth took a deep breath looking up to the ceiling, "I tried to when we were sorted into Gryffindor, but he didn't talk at all, wouldn't look at me. Made me realise he didn't remember. I saw no point in trying again. Do not tell him!" She got up and pushed past them. Rushing off to her room. James and Marlene looked between each other, "I wasn't expecting that." James ran his hand through his hair. "Neither did I. I don't think she'd going to be talking to us for a while…She looked so happy in those pictures. I don't think I've ever seen her smile that brightly before since I've known her." Marlene pushed herself off the desk and ushed James to follow her out of the classroom.
"I'm going to talk to Remus. Don't look at me like that. I'm not going to say anything to him. But maybe the idiot can make a move to mending his friendship with Liz. Alright, Mars, I'm off to find Sirius." With that, James ran off in the direction of the great hall. Marlene made her way back to the common room. She wanted to talk to Elizabeth, or at least try to.
She found Liz in the bathroom. Her eyes were red from crying, the photos on the counter. "Liz, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that." She approached Elizabeth as she dried her face in the towel. She hoped that Elizabeth would talk to her. Elizabeth didn't look at her. She kept looking in the mirror. "You know I had a feeling you and James had been up to something. You've been sneaking off with each other, and I knew it wasn't to do go snog In a broom cupboard somewhere. You both kept focusing on Remus and me." Elizabeth left out a bark of laughter, finally turning to look at Marlene. "You two are shocking detectives; your intentions were so damn obvious…Fuck, I'm just so tired." She rubbed her hands over her face before slapping her cheeks.
Elizabeth was angry at Marlene, but she understood why she had done it. If Marlene had asked her directly, she would've shown her the pictures. But only to Marlene. Marlene rushed and hugged Elizabeth squeezing her tightly, "I'm really sorry. Please don't stay mad at me.". Elizabeth squeezed Marlene back. "I'm mad, but I just don't have the energy. This weird fighting with Remus has taken so much out of me. I don't want to fight with him. I just…it just hurts. I'm also angry because I got my bloody period during Quidditch practice, and then you and James….ugh."
The two girls broke apart; Marlene reached into her bag, pulling out some chocolate, handing it to Elizabeth, who eagerly accepted it. "Promise me you'll fix things with Remus." Liz nodded. She decided that she would try to fix things with Remus, but she thought it may not be that easy. At least she could apologise to him later.
