Well, I'm back with another chapter. I am sorry about updating so late. But on top of collage and working on other fanfictions. I just so happened to be locked out of my account for two months. So, without further delay. Let's get into it.
Chapter 3
The day of the evaluation had arrived. Jason was more than ready to show Ozpin what he was made of. However, he still didn't know what the test would have in it. Jason walked up to the door and opened it.
"What took you so long, I told you to be ready at 5:30 A.M." A familiar blonde asked.
"It is 5:30." Jason quickly responded.
"You should always be early." Glynda said with a glare.
"I'm sorry, sleep is a luxury I haven't had in a long time." Jason replied.
"What?" Glynda asked with a puzzled expression.
"Crap, why did I say that out loud?" Jason asked himself.
"I'm sorry, it's just that I didn't get a lot of sleep on my travels." He said.
"No matter, Ozpin is waiting for us." She said.
"Right, I wouldn't want to keep him waiting." Jason said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Glynda gave him a glance for this. One that made Jason a little uncomfortable.
"She is really tough to talk to, I'd say it is easier to hold a conversation with a spider that has a human face." Jason thought as he remembered a certain friendly face, one which Jason never fully understood.
The two of them walked down a hall and then entered what looked like a small classroom. Ozpin was present as well as another man. He didn't know who he was, but one word could describe him. Proper.
"Hello, I don't believe we have met. I am Jason Barthalamuel, may I ask your name?" The Hunter asked as he extended his hand with a smile.
"I am General Ironwood. I hear you want to become a teacher here at Beacon Academy. I am here to assist in your evaluation. Now, Headmaster, would you like to start?" The General replied.
"Yes, please Mr. Barthalamuel, take a seat." Ozpin said with a gesture to the seat in front of him. Jason sat down and listened to what they had to say.
"Now, first, we will ask some questions." Ironwood said.
"Alright, ask to your heart's content." Jason responded.
"First, do you have any connections to White Fang?" The General asked.
"What is White Fang?" Jason asked. He waited for the usual flood of information, but it didn't come. "Hm, I guess it doesn't work on everything." He thought.
"You haven't heard of White Fang, the Faunus terrorist organization?" Ironwood asked.
"Well until yesterday, I had never met a Faunus." Jason replied with a smile.
Ironwood looked at Ozpin who nodded.
"You have never met a Faunus or had any relation with White Fang?" Ironwood asked with his hands clasped behind his back.
"No, I have not sir." Jason said.
Ironwood looked at Ozpin with a questioning look. Ozpin then spoke.
"Please continue Mr. Barthalamuel. I would like to hear what you have done for the last year." He asked.
"Well, all I have done is hunted beasts." Jason said.
"Well, he isn't lying." Ironwood said as he unclasped his hands and revealed a device that could detect lies.
"Congratulations on passing the first test. Next, is your combat evaluation. Please follow us." Ozpin said as he stood up from his chair.
—
The Good Hunter followed the three to a forest outside of the academy. They stood there and Ozpin explained the test to him.
"Your primary objective is to obtain a piece of 'technology' from an undisclosed location in this forest. Use everything at your disposal to find and obtain this item of value. There will be all kinds of Grimm in this forest. You can kill powerful ones for bonus points that can contribute to your score." Ozpin said with a serious expression.
Ironwood walked up to Jason and held out a com.
"This will let you communicate with us when you finish the mission." He said as Jason took the device.
"I understand, how can I get there quickly?" Jason replied.
"We'll launch you if course." Glynda said.
"Just had to ask, didn't I." Jason thought.
He walked up to a plate that was on the ground and he was told to stand on it. Jason waited for the test to begin.
"Maybe this is a bad idea." Jason thought to himself.
"Ready? Good let us begin." Ozpin said as Jason was launched into the air.
—
Jason flew through the air as he descended to the surface.
"Yeah, this might have been a bad idea. I mean, how am I going to land?" He thought. As he plummeted toward the ground he thought something that didn't feel like it came from his mind.
"Just land on your feet." He thought.
"Strange, is the information and voice part of becoming a Great One?" Jason thought.
"But wait, if I'm a Great One, how am I still human?" Jason thought as he readied to land on the ground. He hit the ground and stood up. He leaned on his cane and put his hand to his chin.
"If I am a Great One, yet still human, then what is the point of my existence?" He thought. The voice came to his mind again.
"To Hunt." Jason pondered a few seconds longer, but looked up to see a pack of Beowolves cautiously approach him.
"Hmm, it seems that the Hunt begins once again." Jason said as he walked toward his prey.
Jason asked himself where the device might be. In which information surfaced in his mind. Nine miles North within a broken structure. Jason then proceeded to fight through the Beowolves with ease. He began by hitting the first Beowolf with the head of his cane. He then stabbed it with the end and sidestepped to avoid another Beowolf. Jason turned and tossed the Threaded Cane into his left hand as he drew his firearm, Evelyn. It was a single shot weapon, but for a Trueblood Hunter, one shot is all you need to turn the tides of battle.
He shot and hit a Beowolf in the head, killing it. He then flicked his wrist and his cane became a whip. Jason flicked his wrist and he cut two Beowolves in half. He then ducked as another pounced at him. Jason transformed the Threaded Cane back into its default state and stabbed the last one. This chain of events happened in under ten seconds. Jason then began walking in the direction of the objective.
—
Ozpin looked at the scroll tablet in his hand and was surprised to see how quickly dealt with a pack of six Beowolves. Yes, Beowolves are easy to subdue, but six Beowolves, in under ten seconds, was quite the feat.
"He is very experienced, but he doesn't have an ounce of seriousness in his actions. It's as if that wasn't even an inconvenience." Ironwood said.
"He is experienced, yes, but how will he fare against multiple Death Stalkers, Ursas and Griffons?" Ozpin stated.
"What? You knew how many?" Glynda asked.
"Why yes, and don't worry, if he can't handle himself, we will step in." Ozpin replied.
Ironwood looked back at the tablet and pondered for a minute.
"There is something else about him that feels off." He said.
"What might that be?" Glynda asked.
"I don't know, whenever I see him I get an overwhelming feeling of…" He trailed off.
"Of what?" Glynda asked again with a skeptical glare.
"...dread." Ironwood said as a shiver ran down his spine.
—
Jason strolled through the forest without a care in the world. He had killed multiple packs of Beowolves by now and a couple Ursas. This was what a true Hunter was. One that stalks their prey and is feared as an apex predator. He had walked about three miles when he came across two Beringels. They looked at him and rushed at him, they grappled and jumped around as Jason stood still. One attacked and Jason simply parried the attack. He then proceeded to plunge his fist into the Beringel's chest and pull some kind of dark heart out.
"Hm, it's still hard to believe that they don't bleed." He said.
Jason listened to the wind. Everything was silent. At least to the normal human ear. He could hear the trees creaking not far behind him. Something big was approaching. Knowledge entered his subconscious. Grimm, type: Death Stalker, weakness: stab it in the eyes or break through the top of its head.
"Huh, so that's what's behind me." Jason said as the Death Stalker rushed at him.
Jason turned around and extended his arm that held the Threaded Cane. The Death Stalker impaled one of its many eyes and Jason then used the can as leverage to pull himself up onto the top of the Death Stalker's head. It tried using its tail to hit him, but Jason avoided both of its swipes. He then took the Threaded Cane and stabbed the Grimm in the head. It punctured the Death Stalker's exoskeleton and it collapsed and its body began to disintegrate. Jason continued on his mission.
—
Jason neared the structure. He noticed that a strange fog shrouded it. So, he did what and sane Hunter would. He walked right into it. The fog was thick, and Jason could feel the presence of Grimm. He had already memorized their scent. It was unique, and deathly. He looked up to see three Apathys. He glanced behind himself to see a Nightmare. The Nightmare tried to drain his Aura. Which did not work because of Jason's lack of an Aura. The Apathy approached him and attempted to drain his willpower. This of course, also didn't work. The Apathys then screamed at him. Which was nothing but a whisper compared to what Jason had heard in Yharnam. Jason walked up to that Apathys, and right before he killed them, they felt an emotion Grimm never feel. Fear. Jason killed the Apathys with a quick slash of the transformed Threaded Cane. He turned around and took aim at the Nightmare. He fired and all was quiet.
Jason walked into the structure and grabbed the device. He then walked outside of the ruins and through the fog he was grabbed by something. He looked up to see a massive looking bird carrying him. He stabbed the Grimm with his cane and lifted himself onto its back. Jason stood on its back and smirked.
"You're gonna be my ride out of here." He said.
Jason stabbed the Threaded Cane into the back of the Griffon and pulled to the left. The Grimm turned left and took him towards where Ozpin stood. After around two minutes of flight he ripped his cane out of the Griffons back and ran up and jumped towards the edge of the cliff. As he did this he turned and shot the Griffon with Evelyn. Jason landed in front of the three of them and looked up with a smile.
"Hunt complete." He said as he handed Ozpin the strange device.
Nice job Barthalamuel." The General said.
"Good work Mr. Barthalamuel. You are now a teacher at Beacon, congratulations." He said with an extended hand.
Jason shook Ozpin's hand and they headed back to Beacon. On their way back, Jason looked at Ozpin.
"I don't know why, but you're hiding something. Something I want to find out." Jason thought.
Jason didn't like not having answers. He wanted to know what secrets this Academy had. He also wanted to know what the Grimm truly were. He decided to look into the matter himself rather than leave it to someone else.
—
Cinder Fall walked into the entrance of Beacon Academy with Mercury Black flanking her left and Emerald Sustrai flanking her right. The woman grinned as she looked forward to completing her objective. As she walked into the Academy, she couldn't help but feel a shiver down her spine. Which for her, was very unusual. She shrugged it off as she strode forward with her team.
