Riley's POV
It was going to be one of those days.
Riley could feel it as he headed slowly up the stairs, letting out an audible yawn as he did so. He didn't get much sleep due to a lot of tossing and turning last night, from a certain someone in particular. Not that she could help it. Cindy was limited to sleeping in only two positions now, which made getting comfortable and staying comfortable throughout the night nearly impossible.
Prior to that, Riley had also been up extremely later than his usual in an attempt to finish up an art project. And while he did get it done, he was certainly paying for the late night now, having forgotten about his early plans today... and all day.
Relaxing and sleeping sounded like a much better way to spend the day than moving and building shit.
As he came to the top of the stairs, his footsteps slowed at the sound of soft music playing. He headed towards the open door closest to him and grinned as he leaned against the doorframe.
Yeah... spending the day relaxing with his wife would definitely be the better option.
Cindy sat in the rocking chair of their guestroom-turned-nursery, a pen and notepad in her hands as she wrote, not yet noticing Riley in the doorway. She was already dressed to impress, wearing a beige cowl-neck tunic dress with black leggings and a brown pair of knee-high boots. Even though the dress was (previously) as loose and oversized as she could get, she filled it out completely now that her bump had started to drop.
As she brushed her bangs out of her eyes, she glanced up, finally noticing him and giving him a grin of her own.
"Hey, babe."
"Hey yourself, gorgeous." Riley replied, strolling into the room over towards her, still taking her in even while she rolled her eyes and shook her head. Damn, she looked good. Glowing, radiant, and all of the other shit people said about pregnant women. Her glow was amped all the way up with it effortlessly and was so fucking sexy.
Even four months later and 37 weeks pregnant, he still wanted her in the worst way.
"Boy please, I feel like a complete slug today." Cindy told him, setting her notes down and pausing her phone's music. "I'm exhausted. They beat me up all night and are still actin' wild now. They're killin' me."
"Need me to talk to them?" Riley smirked, easily kneeling down on his knees in front of her.
"They're your sons." Cindy told him cutely.
Damn straight.
"Aye. I know you both hear me talkin' to you." Riley spoke, his lips near her belly button as his hands stroked the sides of her belly. He felt movement back right away, which still shook him even now. "Yeah, you know your Daddy's voice, huh?" He smiled, providing very light pressure back as he continued to rub his hands along. "Y'all need to ease up on your mama and give her a break now, she's tired."
"And has a big meeting today." Cindy added, her eyes now closed while Riley massaged her.
"That too." Riley continued. "She gotta be in the car all the way there with your hatin' uncle, sit through a long meeting all day, and then come all the way back home. You gotta give her some time to recover."
"We'll see if that happens." Cindy voice was a little strained as she readjusted, moving one hand to apply gentle pressure in a circular motion underneath her chest.
"Did he get you in the ribs again?" Riley asked, glancing up at her in concern.
"As usual, but it's fine." Cindy shook her head. "His kicks are usually just one and done. This one though," Cindy said in a playful tone, dropping her hand way lower on her belly, partially underneath. "He doesn't kick as hard, but he never stops moving."
"Always needs that constant attention, huh?" Riley grinned, still staring at her belly in amazement.
"Just like his daddy." Cindy teased, prompting a smirk in return.
"Anyway boys," Riley continued rubbing. "Be good to your mama. It's gonna be a long day and she just needs your help to make it through it. Aiight...? Good talk." He gave a short nod in conclusion, making Cindy giggle while he kissed her belly.
"Did they agree?"
"There were conditions, but yeah. Don't worry about it, it was just talk among us guys." He pretended to shrug, starting to rise up closer towards her.
"My boys." She smiled, kissing his lips. "Mm, I'll miss you today."
"I'll miss all of you." Riley said in response, pecking her lips again. "What time will you be home?"
"It depends on how long the meeting will take. I have no idea yet." Cindy sighed.
With it being the first weekend of March and the NCAA Women's Tournament right around the corner, Cindy had been requested to attend this last important conference meeting, thankfully the last work event/activity she'd have to attend period before the twins came. After this she was officially on maternity leave, and Riley couldn't be happier. Her old boss Frank from the gym had pretty much forced her to resign about a month ago, as the job as the personal trainer finally started to prove to be too strenuous. And while Riley knew it was hard for Cindy to let that go, he could tell she was also slightly relieved. After the kids came and she was all the way recovered, she could finally begin to work full-time for her career.
Cindy glanced at her phone beside her and made a face. "I actually should head over now if we want to beat traffic."
"I might as well walk you over since I'mma be there too." Riley said, pulling himself up to stand. He allowed Cindy to grab onto him firmly as he slowly pulled her up from the chair.
"Hopefully it'll go fast."
"It needs to. I can't deal with Jazz's hormonal-ass all day."
"And I can't deal with your brother's." She replied, making him chuckle. As luck would have it, Huey happened to have a big work event coming up on Monday and needed to head to his office at the university to work on some last minute things. As usual, it took some insistent urging on Riley's and Jazmine's part for Huey to agree to drive up with Cindy, but Riley was starting to see through his brother. He knew that Huey had the option to work remotely from home when necessary, so the way he was acting like it was a big hassle for Cindy to go with him was starting to look like BS. They carpooled together on a normal work-week anyway, so it was really no different.
Aside from the fact that Huey was going out of his way to help Cindy of course.
"Do you need to bring anything over with you?" Cindy asked him, picking up her things.
"Nah, she has all the tools and supplies over there. From what she said, I'm basically just going to be helping her build some last few pieces of furniture and move some stuff around the room now that it's painted."
"You did pretty good with that for this room." She smiled at him, turning back to look at it from the doorway.
"We both did." Riley agreed, taking another glance as well. He was actually really happy with how well the room turned out. After going through and cleaning out the room completely, save for the black dresser that they left, the room had a totally different feel and look to it after all their work. To start, Riley had covered up those ugly pale walls with a much-needed paint job, using a soft gray color on all four that instantly brightened the room. Then he'd brought in the furniture, most of which they received from their baby shower, using Cindy's direction to arrange everything in the room. As of just last week, they finally had everything they needed from the cribs, changing tables, clothes, additional supplies, and of course, toys.
The nursery for the room looked dope. It was only natural that Jazmine was now requesting Riley's help as well. Since Huey was going out for the day with Cindy, Riley had agreed to go next door and help with last minute furniture, as the family had just recently moved into their new home across the street. Well, new to Huey and Jamilah. Jazmine's parents had finally moved into their new house just a few weeks prior as well, but even before then, Huey had wasted no time in making trips to bring over loads of their things over bit by bit. Now that they finally had all of their things in one space, it took them several days to fill up the space in their new home, as it was much bigger than their previous apartment. It came together well as expected, and now that the main living spaces were taken care of, the last area to finish up was their nursery.
"Theirs is going to look great when it's done too." Cindy grinned, beginning to follow him out of the room. "I know how much Jazmine appreciates your help today."
"Hell, she better!"
"I'm serious." Cindy giggled. "She texted me today that she's not feeling too well."
"She sick?" Riley raised a brow.
"No, I think she's basically the same as me. Just uncomfortable really."
"Is she in a mood though?"
"Not that I picked up through text." Cindy smirked.
"If so, I'm leaving." Riley deadpanned, partially serious. "She ain't about to bite my head off like last time."
"Well don't piss her off like last time!"
"I didn't do anything!"
They continued this conversation down the stairs and through the foyer as Cindy gathered her items for the drive. Riley eyed the tote bag she picked up after dropping her remaining things inside.
"Got some water in there?"
"Yeah, I do."
"Protein bars?"
"A couple, yeah-"
"Your charger?" He asked her pointedly. Cindy gave him a look.
"...My phone goes dead one time..."
"Yeah, the one time I ain't with you and have no idea where the fuck you are."
"Traffic. In Woodcrest. Literally less than five miles away." She said dryly, obviously not wanting to relive his frenzied meltdown.
"Good thing we don't have to worry about that happening again then." He gave her a grin, slyly taking a step in her direction to peek in her bag. Cindy gave him a loving eyeroll before nudging past him to open the front door.
As soon as she did, Riley felt his grin widen slightly as he spotted them right away. He still hadn't gotten used to opening his door and literally being right across the street from his brother and his family. It had already come in handy for both families involved, especially now that both of the women were later in their pregnancies. One particular occasion had left Riley and Granddad retreating from their house to next door after one of Cindy's explosive mood swings. Jazmine had calmly walked over to the other residence despite their warnings, but by the time the boys dared to re-enter the house, the situation was completely diffused as if nothing had ever happened. They found both Cindy and Jazmine laughing/partially crying into bowls of ice cream while watching a cheesy rom-com.
So that was a bonus in Riley's mind. But perhaps the best perk about them moving next door was that he got to see his niece every single day. Granted, he saw her most days anyway, but it was just nice to be able to walk over and see his favorite girl anytime he needed a pick-me-up. He smiled as he watched Jamilah happily use the slide on the brand new playground set her grandparents built for her before they left. She was bundled up in her bright pink coat, knitted cap, and fuzzy boots, no doubt dressed by her mother who was sipping her mug from the wicker chair on the porch.
"One more before we head back inside baby, its cold." They heard Jazmine call over to her daughter, making both Riley and Cindy smirk. While it was still morning and had a light chill to the air, it was hardly "cold." But then again, Jazmine was erratically anal about Jamilah ever getting sick.
"Okay Mommy!" Jamilah smiled back after her ride down, wasting no time in hurrying around to climb the ladder again.
"She's getting so big." Cindy grinned as they started to slowly head down the steps of the house, Riley holding her hand and allowing her to take her time.
"Don't remind me." He let out a mild groan. His baby was already three now!
"Won't be long til she has three others to play with." Cindy said, slightly winded. "Her brother in about two weeks and two cousins anytime after that probably."
"And then another one about nine months later."
Cindy turned to give him a look at his smirk. "Okay one, it wouldn't be that soon."
"Fair." Riley shrugged.
"And two, boy can you let me push these kids out first 'fore we talk about a third?"
"I want a girl though."
"I know. We all know."
"You also look good as fuck pregnant, so excuse me for wanting to see you like this again." He murmured into her ear as they were now crossing the street.
"Boy bye." Cindy giggled, shaking her head at him.
"Unca Reezy!" Jamilah exclaimed from the top tower of her slide, waving at him.
"Hey babe, what's up?" Riley smiled at once, heading over to stand in front of the slide. "Come on down and see me, girl." Jamilah obliged at once, sliding down right away and giggling once Riley scooped her up into his arms.
"Why you laughing, girl?" He grinned, nuzzling her cheeks with kisses. "I can't even really tickle you right now. Your mama's got you bundled up like a little Eskimo out here."
"I heard that!" Jazmine spoke up from the porch, giving him a look while she stood with a hand on her hip. "It's cold."
"Where's your coat then?" He challenged, glancing over her plush green robe over her silk pajama bottoms and slippers.
"I'm having hot flashes!"
"A likely story."
"It's really not." Cindy told him, leaning down to peck Jamilah's cheek as Riley brought her closer. "Hey, sweet girl."
"Hi Aunt Cindy!" The child smiled at her. "Are you staying to play with us today?"
"No baby, not right now. But I'll be back with your Dad later." Cindy told her gently. "Speaking of, do you know if Huey is ready, Jazz?"
"He is." She nodded. "He just went inside to fill his travel mug."
"Lucky." Cindy practically grumbled, clearly missing her coffee mornings. But her body just could not handle that level of caffeine lately.
"I certainly need coffee to get through the day with you." Huey said lightly as he suddenly appeared through the doorway.
"Ha-ha, you're hilarious." Cindy rolled her eyes. "That's what you're wearing?" She said skeptically, eyeing his unusually casual black and gray tracksuit.
Huey looked slightly offended as he glared back at her. "It's a Saturday and I'm just going to my office. No one is going to be there."
"Whatever you say, Fashion Nova." Cindy smirked, turning towards his car. "Come, come, let's go." She told him flippantly. Huey narrowed his eyes at her before trying to take a step backwards into the house. Jazmine lightly grabbed him by his arm and tugged him ahead.
"Have a good day, baby." She smiled, pecking his cheek. Huey mumbled something under his breath before pressing his lips briefly to hers and making his way down.
"Let me know when y'all are on the way home, alright?" Riley spoke to Cindy while shifting Jamilah to sit on top of his shoulders.
"Yeah, I will." Cindy replied, making a wincing face while they walked around to the passenger door. She sounded slightly out of breath again.
"You okay?" He asked her right away, touching her arm.
"I'm fine, just... can't stay comfortable this morning. This ride is gonna be rough."
"Do you need to stay home, girl? You know your boss would understand."
"I know she would, but I don't want to miss this meeting, Reez. And it's not like I'm in pain or anything. I'll be fine."
"You're sure?"
"I'm sure." She smiled up at him, leaning over for a kiss. "I love you. I'll see you later."
"I love you too."
"Bye Mila, I'll see you later." Cindy blew a kiss up at her as she reached up to stroke her cheek.
"Bye Aunt Cindy!" Jamilah waved as Cindy opened her door and Riley held her hand as she eased inside. She waved back at them both once Riley shut the door and came around to Huey's side, who was now standing at his open door and glaring into the passenger seat.
"Aye, she's not feeling too good today. Can you make sure she's as comfortable as she can be during the drive?"
"Sure, what other two wishes would you like me to grant, Riley?"
Riley stared at his brother in silence for a beat. "You ain't funny man, I'm serious."
"She'll be fine." Huey rolled his eyes. "I'll be sure to waste gas by having both the air on and the windows down at the same time, as usual for her highness."
"I need fresh air, fool!" Cindy snapped, leaning onto the driver's seat and into the conversation. "Hurry up! Some of us have to be places on time!"
"And some of us are about to walk to said places!"
"Babe, put your seatbelt on. And bruh." Riley gave his brother a look. "It's a ride like any other day. Can y'all just be chill?"
"...We'll see." They both replied stubbornly at once.
"Awesome." Riley rolled his eyes.
"Bye Daddy!" Jamilah broke the tense silence, smiling down at her dad. Riley choked slightly as Huey yanked and held the collar of his shirt down slightly so he could be eye-level with his daughter.
"You have a good day, I'll be home soon." Huey told her, his voice back to being calm.
"I will Daddy, I love you!"
Huey leaned in to gently kiss her forehead. "I love you too, Jamilah. Be good for your mother and uncle." He told her, finally letting go of Riley's shirt.
Riley let out a slight cough as he stood tall again and shot him a glare. "Yeah, tell yo Daddy to be good to Aunt Cindy today, baby."
"You be good too, Daddy." Jamilah giggled cutely.
"Again, we'll see." Huey smirked before sliding into his seat and shutting the door. Riley shook his head as he turned back towards the porch, already hearing the bickering as Huey started the car and rolled down the windows. Jazmine gave him a weary look once he made it back on the landing, shaking her head as well.
"They're hopeless aren't they?"
"Hopefully one of them doesn't kill the other." Riley rolled his eyes.
"Oh, it's just Huey and Cindy going off alone together in a car. What could possibly go wrong?" Jazmine said wryly.
Cindy's POV
If she was being honest, she really wasn't hearing much of what these people were saying.
She wished that she could. It was the perfect opportunity to schmooze and impress the board members, especially for when she'd really be able to commit to the job during the summer. But it was impossible. And she couldn't focus. The only thing she could focus on was keeping a smile plastered on her face.
Because fuck... that pep talk had not helped... and her boys were acting reckless right now with her body.
She just felt so off since last night. Running on hardly any sleep was surely taking a toll too, being as though all she did was toss and turn with little to no relief. She just couldn't get comfortable, especially in her lower back. It felt tight, borderline painful the way it would tense up during her movements. It had eased a little bit since last night, but the car ride had her back tightening again on her, and now it wouldn't stop. That in junction with the increased pelvic pressure she'd been feeling, now heightened from sitting in a hard chair throughout the entire meeting. Not to mention she had been so embarrassed, she had left the meeting repeatedly to use the bathroom due to her nonexistent bladder these days.
Everything about the day was rough. And she probably really could've, maybe even should've stayed home.
But it didn't matter now. They were finally wrapping up. All she had to do was keep nodding and smiling at this old board member until he shut the hell up so she could leave.
"Oh Cindy, it has been such a delight talking with you today." The old man went on with a pleasant smile. "I can't wait to see more from you over the following season."
"Thank you so much, I look forward to it." Cindy replied, forcing more of a smile at the feeling of another pinched nerve in her back. She hoped it didn't come across as a grimace.
"And congratulations again on... well, so many things! Your twins, your recent marriage... it's Mrs. Freeman now, isn't it?"
"Yup, that's right."
"Are you planning on hyphenating that, by chance?"
Do we seriously have to talk about this now?!
"She goes by Cindy 'Fearsome' Freeman these days, Bob." Libbey swooped into the conversation gracefully. "She hardly needs the last name to define her, she's already a household name."
"Well, that much is true." Bob chuckled along with Cindy, who gave her boss a grateful smile.
"Sorry to interrupt Bob, but Cindy does have an upcoming appointment this evening that she's unable to be late for." Libbey said, placing a gentle hand on Cindy's shoulder.
"Oh, I wasn't even watching the time." Cindy played along, glancing at the clock on the wall. "I actually do have to run, but it was so nice talking with you today too, Mr. Welker." She told him, extending her hand.
"Please, call me Bob." He smiled, accepting her handshake. "And not a problem, I certainly don't want you to miss your appointment. I'm sure we'll talk again very soon, dear." He gave her a light wave as Libbey gently guided Cindy out of the multipurpose room.
"Hopefully not as long." Libbey muttered to her as they walked, making Cindy laugh once they were safely out of the room and in the hallway.
"He was nice... but thank you." She grinned.
"Don't mention it. I adore the man but he can go on for hours, and I just don't have that sort of time. Or patience... mostly patience."
"I feel you." Cindy chuckled again, slightly wincing at the tenseness it caused. Too much laughing.
Libbey glanced at her as they walked, beginning to slow down. "You could've excused yourself at any time, you know. This is your day off technically."
"I know but it's fine, I wanted to be here."
"You don't look fine, Cindy." Libbey responded. "And shit if I know about having kids, but you look way more drained than usual."
"Apparently that happens the further along I get." She fought back the urge to wince again. "I'm not in serious pain or anything."
"You look like you're in pain." Libbey told her bluntly as she held the door open for them to walk outside.
"I'm not." Cindy told her, even though it was starting to feel like a lie. "I'll be okay. I'm just going to head over to meet Huey at his office so he can take me home and I can rest."
"Have you been drinking?" Libbey said calmly in response. "Freeman's office is on the south side of the university grounds. You are certainly not about to walk from here all the way to the other side of campus!"
Cindy inwardly groaned to herself just thinking about that walk. Had she been delusional in coming up with that idea? At her current state, she probably wouldn't even make it halfway across campus.
"You tell that brother of yours to pick you up right here at the Xfinity Center, period."
"...But-"
Libbey held up a hand before turning it into a finger and pointing at the bench behind her. "Sit."
Cindy knew it was useless to argue with her as she headed to the seat. "Can't wait to hear his mouth about having to pick me up."
"He'll get over it."
"He'll probably keep me waiting." Cindy rolled her eyes, trying to ease herself slowly onto the bench. "Or not come at all."
"Tell him to get his ass here in a timely manner unless he wants his ass kicked... again."
Cindy snapped her head up at her. "You've gone against Huey?"
"I think you missed the silent 'and won' part." She smirked.
"Girl, what?! How have you never shared this before?"
"It never came up before." Libbey shrugged. "But oh yes, Huey Freeman and I go way back to when we met over a friendly spar of martial arts... that almost turned deadly." She shrugged again.
"...Again... girl what?!"
"The problem with Huey is that he thinks he's the only one anywhere with a skill for the arts, what with his Jujitsu, Taekwondo, Judo, et cetera, et cetera." Libbey continued casually, beginning to pick idly at her nails. "However, someone needed to inform him that his Kumite (whoo-HAH) needs a little work. And that someone was me."
Cindy glanced around slightly at a strange noise that she thought she heard, but it must've been the wind. She shook her head, refocusing on Libbey's calm demeanor. "Well, I'm speechless."
"He certainly was too." She grinned. "As a matter of fact... I know a way to get him here quickly for you."
"The quicker the better." Cindy pulled out her phone right away.
Libbey smirked, taking a few steps closer. "Here's what you tell him..."
Cindy honestly hadn't expected much when she sent Huey the text. She certainly hadn't expected him to get there in a whopping three minutes. But damn, when he pulled up to the curb and almost simultaneously tuck-and-rolled out like a fucking ninja, she was through.
Libbey had not been lying.
"Where is she?" Huey said at once as he stood tall, now in a defensive position as she scanned the area meticulously.
"What in the hell?" Cindy blurted. "And why do you have nunchucks?!"
"Why do you think?" He shot back, still not making direct eye contact as she continued to look around guardedly. "You told me she was ready to battle, where is she?" He demanded. He had even pulled his afro back into a giant ponytail puff and had a black band around his forehead, the epitome of serious.
...Wow...
"Okay look," Cindy let out a brief chuckle. "I don't wanna disappoint you or whatever, but the battle's not happening today. Libbey said that would be the fastest way to get you here."
Huey finally met her eyes exactly and glared. "Excuse me?"
"Nigga, you heard me." Cindy shot him a glare back in return. "And I'm sorry, but I couldn't walk all the way to your office. I'm way too exhausted."
"Of course you are." He practically hissed, stuffing his nunchucks into his pocket as he spun around towards the car, muttering something under his breath about a kung-fu killer wolf bitch.
Cindy rolled his eyes at his dramatics as she tried to move her legs to stand, but couldn't. She tried again to no use, wincing at the slight strain.
"Huey." She spoke his name at his turned back.
"What, Caucasian?" He answered, still walking.
"I can't get up, I need your help."
"All you ever do lately is need my help." He grumbled, coming to a stop.
"Yeah fucking right, can you just get over here?" Cindy snapped at his back. "The faster you help me, the faster we can go home and get the hell away from each other."
"Gladly." Huey muttered, finally turning around to approach her again. Cindy glared at him while he did, more at the way she was feeling than anything. Surprisingly, the boys had finally settled their movements, but her body was still feeling weird... weirder than it was earlier actually.
"You're not going to be sick, are you?" Huey was suddenly in front of her, eyeing her skeptically.
"No. Why?"
"You look like shit."
"Gee, thanks." Cindy snipped at him, reaching her hands up towards his arms. He leaned down slightly so he could support her, taking ahold of her upper arms while she gripped onto his biceps in order to slowly pull her to her feet. She had barely noticed she had emitted a low groan while she did so until Huey stared down at her, his hands still holding her arms.
"Are you alright?" He asked her, arching his typical eyebrow.
She bit her lip, trying to nod. "I'm fine, I'm just... uncomfortable right now."
Huey kept his raised eyebrow in place as he grabbed her tote bag with in one hand, while moving his other down to allow her to link arms with his. "Do you need to hold on?"
Cindy gave him a look, not really wanting to, but as soon as she took a step, she gripped on immediately. Sitting down in that hard bench had not been smart, obviously.
"It shouldn't take too long to get home since it's a Saturday." Huey spoke again, surprising her with further conversation while he tugged her down the sidewalk. "You should rest once you get home."
"Maybe." Cindy replied tersely, feeling more and more pressure in her lower back. But yet, the boys were barely moving anymore. What in the hell?
She felt Huey's eyes on her as he opened the backseat to toss her bag inside. After, he opened her passenger door and allowed her to continue to grip onto him as she eased inside. Right after she did and as soon as she turned her body to sit straight ahead in her seat, she felt it, just as Huey had closed her door shut.
Pop.
It was a strange sensation. It wasn't audible, but it was almost as if she had heard it internally. She had definitely felt it, followed by another strong sensation afterwards that she realized she had no control over.
"Cindy." She heard Huey's voice talking to her. She hadn't even registered that he had made it into the driver's seat. She could feel the heat of his stare as he studied the side of her face intently.
"Cindy, what is it?" His voice was serious, maybe even concerned. Cindy took in a breath at that, feeling the onset of a panic attack occurring as she closed her eyes. This was really happening.
"Cindy, if you don't answer me right now, dammit. What the hell is the-"
"My water just broke." She managed in a whisper.
There was a brief pause. "...W-what?" He seemed to stutter, clearing his voice right after. "Could you repeat that a little louder, I don't think I heard you-"
"Huey, my water just broke." She stated again, beginning to find her voice as the panic grew and her body started to tremble. "My water just broke, the babies are coming, we are miles away from home, and Riley is not here." Her voice cracked on his name as tears filled her eyes at once. "This was not supposed to happen this way!"
"Cindy, I know but-"
"No you DON'T know!" Cindy whirled on him. "I'm about to go into labor without my husband and without my doctor anywhere nearby!"
"Cindy, you have to calm down." Huey told her firmly, making her snap.
"Don't you DARE tell me to calm down!" She yelled at him as tears began to spill down her face. "How the fuck do you expect me to act?! I'm about to have my fucking twins! I'm not prepared for this and I'm not ready, especially without Riley. He's the only one who's kept me calm during this entire pregnancy and I just can't do this without him Huey, I can't!" She cried, feeling herself begin to unravel as her body shook.
It wasn't until Huey put a strong hand on her shoulder that her trembling lessened, and she glanced over to meet his intense eyes.
"Look at me. I am the fucking best you've got right now." Huey told her fiercely. "You are going to be fine. We're going to make it to the hospital, you're going to deliver the babies, and Riley is going to be right by your side." He told her in a level tone. "But until then, you have to relax and stay with me, Cindy. You've got to trust me."
She nodded at him in silence, and strangely enough, did trust him.
"Put on your seatbelt." He instructed, doing the same while he started the car. "And keep an eye on the clock, you're going to need to start timing your contractions once they start."
"I don't know if they've... started." Cindy strained, bowing over a bit as she applied slight pressure to her side.
"Yes, they have, that was one." Huey glanced over towards her briefly. He was already peeling out of the campus exit. "How many times have you felt pain like that today?"
"Here and there I guess, but... I was mainly having back pain last night." Cindy thought to herself while she pulled out her phone to bring up her timer app.
"Shit, you were probably having back labor last night." Huey muttered to himself, clearly in thought.
"What does that mean?" Cindy asked him, noting the way even he now looked slightly anxious. "How far along do you think I am?"
"Cindy, breathe." He told her instead. "Do your breathing exercises and watch your time."
"Huey."
"Breathe." He repeated again, pulling out his cellphone as he quickly found the number he was looking for. He cursed lowly when it seemed to go to voicemail before he dialed another number.
"Who were you trying to call?" Cindy asked.
"Focus on your breathing—hello? Granddad?" Huey directed his attention towards the phone. "Granddad listen to me, Cindy's in labor." He rattled off quickly as soon as they line answered. Cindy could hear Granddad's panic from the passenger seat. "Do you have a baby bag packed yet?" Huey turned toward her, holding the phone slightly away from his ear while Granddad babbled on incoherently on the other end.
Cindy's heart dropped as she shook her head no. She had thought they had more time. She felt like a complete idiot.
"Calm down, it's fine." Huey told her simply before pulling the phone back to his ear. "Granddad, Granddad, stop and listen to me carefully. Go into the nursery room and pack some things for the twins. The essentials. Two sets of everything... Granddad stop, you can do this. Cindy trusts you. I trust you." He told him easily, making Cindy slightly grin even when her body tensed. "Please pack those things and meet us at the hospital when you can. We'll see you soon." Huey pulled down the phone from his ear and put it in his cupholder as he continued to drive. "Are you counting?"
"Did you call Riley?" Cindy countered.
"I am going to try him again in just a minute." He told her while he reached his arm behind his chair onto the backseat. Cindy tried to turn her head back to see what he was reaching for, glancing down in confusion as he stuffed an old black sweatshirt into her hands.
"For you to sit on." He said, avoiding eye contact. "And before you ask, no, I do NOT want it back."
Cindy rolled her eyes as she slid it underneath herself, letting out a whimper after she did so, gripping up onto the assist handlebar. She heard Huey sigh before clearing his throat, glancing over to see him still avoiding eye contact with her. However, he now had the palm of his hand outstretched towards her.
"I'll deny it every happened." He told her evenly, his eyes on the road.
Cindy didn't hesitate, grasping onto his hand at once. She tried to focus on her breathing while still trying to time her contractions, but her nerves were getting the best of her.
"Please say something to calm me down Huey... please." She spoke to him quietly, using her other hand to rub along her stomach. It was bothering her that her constantly active babies felt almost dormant now.
"…I don't know why you're freaking out…." Huey's dumbass said to her, having her wanting to pull her hand away immediately.
"Oh, I don't know bro, maybe because I'm having a BABY. TWO!"
"Exactly." He replied, as if that was answer enough. Cindy turned towards him in completely disbelief.
"What are you talking about?"
"You shouldn't be freaking." He repeated, shrugging a blithe shoulder. "Your twins are going to be here soon. You and my brother are going to officially be a mom and dad. You're going to be great at it just like you are with Jamilah, that much is a given. They probably won't be as good as Jamilah though, obviously."
"Whatever, Huey." She rolled her eyes with a grin.
"I can already foresee myself being at war with your little spawn." He continued, managing to make her giggle, and surprisingly it didn't hurt as badly as she expected.
"I'm not going to allow you to call your nephews spawn."
"Damn, that's right." He cracked a smirk.
"Keep it up and you're gonna go from Uncle Huey to Uncle Hater real quick."
"…Like I can't already see that happening."
Riley's POV
Where the hell is my phone?
Riley glanced underneath the dresser he had just finished putting together to make sure it hadn't slid underneath, but there was nothing. He'd have to use Jazmine's phone to dial it later, it could be anywhere in the house at this point, he'd been in almost every room helping her with things.
He'd find it eventually.
Riley turned to the open doorway at the sound of little footsteps pitter-pattering in the hallway. He pulled his Air Pods from his ears and grinned when his niece stepped into the room.
"Woooww!" She cooed, taking it all in.
"You like your brother's new room so far, girl?"
"He'll love it!" Jamilah beamed at him, making him chuckle with a nod. He took another look around as well, proud of his work so far. He had painted the walls last week, the day after he finished up his own nursery actually, and was happy with how the green coating had turned out. It was a light pastel shade that gave the room a fresh look to it. The color of the walls went well with a lot of the deep blue accent pieces Jazmine had found for the room, such as the curtains, plush rug, and pillows. Riley had spent most of his time building some of the baby furniture and rearranging the pieces around the room in a way that suited Jazmine.
And unfortunately, she was picky today. And little to no help, which made the process take longer.
Not that it was her fault. As Cindy had said, she didn't seem to be feeling well. She needed to be off her feet almost exclusively and looked just exhausted in general. Which left her also a little cranky. Understandably… he guessed.
Riley turned as Jazmine stepped into the room as well behind her daughter, at a much slower pace. "Looking really nice, Riley." She sounded completely out of breath.
"You good?" He asked while he stood to his feet.
"Stairs." She explained briefly, not quite looking at him while she brushed over Jamilah's head. "Baby, how about you play in your room? Your uncle and I will be done soon, but we still have a bit to finish up."
"Okay, Mommy." The child smiled up at her before skipping off.
"We?" Riley smirked once Jamilah had left the room.
"Hush." Jazmine brushed him off as she walked closer to the crib. "Can we maybe move this… mm," She paused as she gripped the railing and seemed to hold her breathe slightly. "A little to the right?" Her breath was hitched while she kept her eyes closed, now slightly leaning her body forward.
"Yo, are you aiight?" Riley took a step closer and pressed a hand to her back lightly. He didn't give her time to answer as he turned around and started to drag the rocking chair over. "Sit down for awhile."
"I'm okay, just… just give me a minute."
"Jazz, I'm not askin' you. Sit your ass down for a minute to catch your breath."
She turned her head to shoot him a look, but didn't resist as she let go of the crib to approach the chair. Riley allowed her to hold onto him and gently lowered her down into the seat.
"Stop bein' so stubborn." He told her, crossing his arms once he stood tall again.
"I'm not… I'm fine. Just drained and tired today."
"And sore?"
"It's just Braxton's." Jazmine said, not meeting his eyes as she rubbed her large belly.
"Who?" Riley scrunched up his nose in confusion.
"Braxton's Hicks. I had them when I was pregnant with Jamilah too. Basically they're a milder form of contractions that you can have before labor. More often than not, most women experience this when they have false alarms for the first time."
"So they're kinda like fake contractions then?"
"I wouldn't consider them fake." Jazmine said with another wince. "But yeah, basically."
"How do you tell the difference between them and real ones?"
"There are different ways to tell with timing and intensity location, but it's not infallible."
"Then how can you be sure?"
"You are asking so many questions right now. Now help me up." Jazmine told him, shifting in her seat as she reached her arms towards him.
"What, I'm learning." Riley told her smartly, giving her a look at her outstretched hands. "And you just sat down."
"And now I've gotta pee Riley, come on!" She told him, flapping her hands at him.
"A nigga can get a please you know." He rolled his eyes, reaching down to help her up.
"Please and thank you then." She said, nudging him out of the way once she was firmly on her feet to hurry to the connecting bathroom.
Riley sucked his teeth, rolling his eyes at the shut door before he turned back to the crib. Just as he was about to start sliding it down, he heard the echoed pitch of Jazmine's voice from the bathroom. It didn't sound like she said anything, more like she had gasped, loudly enough for him to hear her.
"Aye, you alright?" Riley called out, beginning to walk over to the door. "Jazmine," He said again before pressing his ear to the door. Had he not done that, he would not have heard her whispered answer.
"…Oh fuck."
Riley's stomach dropped at that as he immediately banged on the door. "Jazmine I'm serious, are you alright?" He didn't know exactly where his mind was going, but he felt his heartrate begin to accelerate slightly at the unknown. He banged a little harder before trying the doorknob in a desperate last attempt, but it was locked. "Open this damn door right now, this ain't funny." He said a little louder, feeling his anxiousness grow. He started to hear rustling on the other side of the door followed by other clatter and noises, one in particular as if she was ripping paper. He tried the door again uselessly while he listened, now hearing the sound of running water briefly before it was shut off again. "Jazmine!" He raised his voice again.
About a moment later, the door was pulled open quickly and Riley met her eyes immediately. His nerves continued to rise by her expression. He could tell just by her face that something was off. He skimmed her over just as he was ready to open his mouth to demand an explanation, but his voice caught as he noticed something else off.
His eyes focused towards the front of her loose pajama pants, that now suddenly looked awkward and bulkier… as if she had stuffed something down there… like napkins….
Riley's eyes widened as he stared. "Oh no." The words fell out of his mouth and his heart continued to drop to his stomach.
"My water just broke." Jazmine told him quietly, confirming his worst fear as he brought his eyes up towards hers.
"You can't be serious right now Jazz, not right now! You're supposed to wait for Huey to be witchu, not me!" The panic was here. "Y'all said you were getting induced in two weeks, didn't you set that appointment?!"
"Well apparently he doesn't want to wait that long." Jazmine told him evenly, gripping her belly with one hand as she gripped the bathroom doorknob with the other and grimaced. "He's coming now, Riley."
"Oh fuck." Riley hissed, rubbing his face with his hands. He was about to let out a few more of those when a small voice interrupted.
"Mommy," Jamilah spoke, entering the room. "I can't find my… what?" She paused, looking between her mother and uncle in confusion.
Jazmine managed to give her a very forced smile. "The baby's coming, honey."
Her mouth dropped in a huge smile as her eyes widened in excitement. "My baby brother's coming?!" She squealed excitedly.
"Yeah baby, he's comin'." Riley finally snapped out of it, trying to will himself to get it together. It was go time. "We gotta take Mommy to the hospital, so I need you to slide on your shoes and coat and wait for us downstairs, okay? Hurry!" She nodded right away, wasting no time before she scampered out of the room obediently.
"Alright c'mon, we gotta go." Riley said, striding over to the closet and grabbing her baby-ready backpack off the hook. He slid it onto his back before he went back to Jazmine and took her arm to help her. She slowly began to do her breathing as they headed out into the hallway and towards the stairs. He patted his pocket, cursing again when he forgot he didn't know where his phone was. "Your cell on you? I'm gonna call G to let him know." Jazmine nodded, pausing once they reached the steps to fish it out of her robe pocket. Riley ignored the notification that she had messages and quickly dialed Granddad's number, still holding onto Jazmine as they started descending down the stairs.
"Hello? Jazmine?" His grandfather's voice answered the phone in confusion.
"G, it's me." Riley said at once. "Yo, call Huey right now and meet us at the hospital, Jazz is going into labor."
"WHAT?!"
"I've got her and Jamilah, we're on our way now." Riley continued, ignoring his loud exclamation. "Just let him know and call J's parents for me too. I've gotta get Jazmine in the car."
"Alright but Riley-"
Jazmine let out a loud groan as she dug her nails into Riley's arm, slowing him down as he turned to face her fully. "I've gotta go, Granddad!" He spoke over him. "Just tell Huey and the others and meet us at the hospital!"
"But boy-"
Riley didn't hear what he said as he had already disconnected the call. "Are you alright?" He asked Jazmine.
"I'm okay, just slow down, please."
"I'm sorry, I gotchu." He told her, slowing down with her as they continued down the flight of steps. Once they made it down, Riley hurried to lead both girls to the car and get them inside. He felt Jazmine's phone buzzing in his pocket as he buckled Jamilah in and then again as he slid into the front seat and peeled away from the curb. He took it out and glanced at the number calling, wrinkling his brow that it was Granddad again. He tried to answer but it had just gone to voicemail.
"Here's your phone back." He told Jazmine, handing it over. "If Granddad calls again, ask him what he wants, he just called back-to-back."
"I'll try." Jazmine said breathily, her eyes on her watch as she exhaled slowly. She glanced down at the phone in her hand as it lit up. "Oh, I think he just texted actually." She said.
"Finally."
"It's… really jumbled."
"Of course it is." Riley shook his head.
"'Candy's watermelon break. Shoes in lab. Going to dentist.'" Jazmine read aloud. "What?"
"His stupid autocorrect." Riley rolled his eyes. "He has it on the most intense setting."
"'Candy's watermelon break.'" Jazmine said again slowly. "What could that… ohh…."
"What?" Riley glanced towards her, noticing the look of shock on her face as she stared at the phone.
"I… think I understand… but I'm not completely positive… oh… now I'm sure." Her eyes widened even more.
"What do you mean?" Riley asked again.
"He sent a corrected text."
"…And?"
Jazmine looked ahead through the windshield and quickly out of her and Riley's windows as well before she placed a gentle hand on his arm. "I need you to keep calm and keep control of the car, but… Cindy's water just broke."
"WHAT?!" Riley was glad she had checked around because he definitely made a hard and unintentional swerve in the road.
"Calm down, calm down, and stop at this next light." She told him, pointing back to the road and at a green light. Riley slowed way down, ignoring the horn behind him and pulling to a stop as they light switched to yellow.
"What do you mean her water broke, where is she?!" Riley demanded, turning to face her fully.
"Calm down, Riley." She told him slowly. "Granddad said that she's still with Huey and they're on the way to the hospital now too. We're probably going to get there right around the same time. But you have to stay calm and just get us there safely, okay?"
Riley felt his hands shake as he stared at the road in shock, beginning to drive again slowly once the light turned green. "I just can't believe I'm not with her. And that I don't even have my fuh-reaking phone." He spared a quick glance in the rearview mirror at his niece. "She could've been calling me. I should've been there. I should be there."
"And you will, Riley. We all will, it's okay." Jazmine rested her hand on his arm again. "You're not going to miss anything and you're going to see Cindy very soon. And then, you're going to have your twins together." Riley let out a breath, finding her comfort ironic when she was the one about to have a baby too. Literally.
"Aunt Cindy's having her baby too?!" Jamilah asked from the backseat.
"Yes she is, honey." Jazmine glanced back, clearly fighting back her grimace. "Aunt Cindy's gonna become a Mommy today."
"Yay!" The little girl cheered.
"And your uncle… is finally going to become a Daddy." Jazmine added, giving a gentle squeeze to his arm.
Riley let out a half-hearted chuckle at his niece's cheers from behind him, pretty much to keep from crying. He already felt like an emotional wreck and he wasn't even at the hospital yet. This shit was really about to happen. They were about to be parents, for real.
And ready or not nigga, you are about to be a Dad of two.
Cindy's POV
It had definitely been the fastest they ever made it from the University back to Woodcrest. Huey had been flying. Carefully, but efficiently. Most likely, he probably just wanted to get the pregnant white girl with the broken water out of his car as fast as possible. But surprisingly, the drive hadn't been miserable. Aside from her increasing discomfort of course, but not from him. He was actually being... supportive. Kind even.
Cindy cracked a slight grin as she listened to him talk to the attendant nurse. "Her last name now is Freeman, but she was previously under as Cindy McPherson." He explained.
"And is this your wife, sir?"
"She's my sister-in-law." He replied matter-of-factly. He didn't even sound disgusted. "Her and my brother Riley Freeman had been working with Dr. Emerson. He's on his way now too, with my wife, Jazmine, who is also having contractions. We're with Dr. Barden."
"Wait, your wife is going into labor now, too?" She genuinely sounded surprised. "Your family is certainly having a day."
"Tell me about it." Both he and Cindy mumbled in response.
"Okay, if you two could wait here in the lobby for a minute. I'll go let both doctors know that you're here and to prepare two rooms, one for your wife and one for your sister, alright?"
"Thank you." Huey nodded before the woman walked off down the hallway. He turned back to Cindy who was seated behind him in a wheelchair and raised a brow at her amused expression. "What?"
"You didn't correct her." She grinned. "About the in-law part just now."
"You're ridiculous that you're even thinking about that right now." Huey rolled his eyes.
"You never let it slide." She continued, which was true.
"Forgive me, I've got some things that are a little more pressing than correcting her error." He smirked.
Cindy started to chuckle, but quickly bit back a moan at another swift contraction. Huey noticed immediately and extended his hand, allowing Cindy to take it right away.
"Don't hold your breath, exhale now." He coached her like he'd been doing the whole time. Cindy released a shuddered breath out while she squeezed his hand. The contractions were getting more intense now, not to mention longer. Huey's eyes were now on his watch. "Good... good girl, inhale slow." He continued, once again able to calmly get her through another round after a few minutes.
"Thank you." She sighed after, glancing up towards him.
He shook his head, brushing off the gratitude. "You're doing well. You're going to be just fine. Riley should be here soon."
"And Jazmine." Cindy shook her own head, still in disbelief. They both had been shocked by Granddad's phone call. Huey had almost hung up on him, he had thought he'd been joking….
"WHAT did you say?" Huey had said sharply into the phone, making Cindy turn her head towards him at his tone. His eyes were practically dilated as he glared ahead at the road. "If this is a joke, it's not fucking funny, Granddad."
"BOYYY, HAVE YOU LOST YOUR DAMN MIND?!" Huey held the phone away from his ear as Granddad bellowed through the speaker. "Why the HELL would I joke about this? Your girl is in LABOR! Riley is on her way to the hospital with her now!" He continued, and Cindy's jaw dropped after hearing every word. She stared at Huey, who's mouth was also agape while his eyes were now doubled in size.
"B-but how…." He sputtered into the phone. "It's not even time, when did she-"
"I DON'T KNOW!" Granddad was still shouting. "Get your ass to the hospital! And when you get there, I'm whoopin' your ass on SIGHT!"
Click.
They sat in silence for the next few moments, Cindy staring blankly out of the window while Huey was still holding the phone to his ear lifelessly as they drove.
But nah… this was real life.
"Of all days." He murmured, scratching the back of his head. "Her inducing was literally set the week after next for her C-section… since she had complications during the first pregnancy." He told her, still not making eye contact. "This is what we had tried to avoid."
"It'll be fine, Huey. They can still do the surgery now."
"They can…" Huey nodded, glancing down the hallway to where the nurse had disappeared. "They had just planned to have her there from the beginning to monitor the labor from start to finish."
"It's just a slight deviation from the original plan, Huey. She's going to get here soon and they'll be able to make the same arrangements for her then. It'll be fine." She repeated.
"…I'm not worried." He said randomly after a beat.
Cindy gave him a wry grin. "No one said that you were." Huey cast her a side glance at that.
"Keep breathing." Was all he said.
Cindy's grin was still in place as she rolled her eyes, turning to the entrance at the sound of the sliding doors opening. Her eyes lit up at the sight of them making their way in, Jazmine being first as Riley quickly pushed her in a wheelchair, walking alongside Granddad who was carrying Jamilah.
"Riley!" She called out to him at once, making Huey whip his head to the doorway as well. It was instantaneous the way both men switched from their positions immediately, Riley letting go of Jazmine's chair to zip around her while Huey raced to her side. Huey and Riley had barely glanced at each other while they passed by to get to their wives.
"Babe," Riley was at her side at once, leaning down to wrap his arms around her as he kissed her head. "I am so sorry I wasn't with you." He told her seriously, when he pulled back to look at her. "I knew you shoulda stayed home."
"It's okay Reez, I'm fine." She assured him, rubbing down his arms. "But…" She paused to give him a playful look. "This would be the one time I ain't with you and have no idea where the fuck you are."
Riley let out a snicker before bringing his lips to hers briefly. "I lost my phone. But you would go into labor now." He grinned before pecking her lips again.
"Mmhmm." Cindy smiled.
"I am sorry though. I shoulda been there with you, not Huey."
"It's okay, babe." Cindy told him again, holding his hand. "He was actually… really nice to me."
"Really?" Riley raised both of his eyebrows at that.
She nodded. "I'm surprised too. But he was. I appreciated it."
"…Well, damn. Me too." Riley gave a nod as well, glancing behind him to see the others starting to make their way. Huey was now pushing Jazmine with one hand, rubbing the back of his head with the other while he made a face.
"What's wrong witchu?" Riley gave him a look. "And what's with your hair?"
"Nothing." Huey replied scathingly, scowling at Granddad from the corner of his eye. He had thankfully taken the band off his head before entering the hospital, but had kept his hair pulled back into a large ponytail puff.
Granddad noticed the way he was glaring at him. "Boy, consider that a preview. As soon as Lil Baby delivers y'all's baby, you and me are steppin' outside."
"Yeah, I know."
"You definitely ain't too grown to get this belt work."
"I know."
"Cuz boyyy, if you ever raise your voice to me like that again, I swear I'll put my foot so far up-"
"We know!" The adults responded simultaneously, giving him a pointed look while gesturing towards Jamilah still in his arms. He seemed to snap out of it, glancing at the child in his arms who simply grinned at him in return. He let out a slow breath while he shot another glare towards Huey.
"We'll continue this conversation later." He commented. "Oh yeah, I made you a bag, Cutie Pie." He said, turning to Cindy as he lifted the black duffel bag in his arm.
"Thank you so much, Granddad." Cindy told him gratefully. "Did you two ride over together?"
"Nah, we got here in the parking lot about the same time." Riley shook his head, taking the bag from him. "Where's the doctors by the way?"
"They're getting the rooms ready. Slowly." Huey explained with an eyeroll.
"Can we go convince them to speed it up?" Riley gave his brother a look.
Cindy smirked and shook her head at Jazmine, who had been quiet up until this point. "How are you feeling, girl?"
Jazmine gave her a mild grimace in return. "Starting the feel the same way I felt the last time." She told her with a shrug. "You look good."
"Please, I've had multiple people tell me I look like crap today." Cindy snorted.
"You seem to be hanging in though. You're doing good."
"So are you."
"Y'all both are. We proud of y'all both." Riley told them with a shrug.
"Awww." The women cooed at him.
"Yeah… so can we start takin' bets on who's gonna deliver first?" He smirked at Huey and Granddad.
"Boy, bye." Cindy chuckled with the wave of her hand.
"You're so silly." Jazmine shook her head.
"What? It'll take some of the pressure off." Riley shrugged.
"Cindy." Granddad said simply.
"Granddad!" Jazmine giggled.
"Huey was the first one to tell me she was going into labor, so she'll probably get done first." He shrugged.
"Ha!" Riley boasted triumphantly.
"With both twins?" Huey raised an eyebrow. "Also, Jazmine's having a C-section, so it'll most likely be faster than the full labor, without all the pushing and whatnot."
"Well then that's cheatin'."
Jazmine started to laugh along with the others before biting her lip slightly and leaning back more in her chair. Huey took her hand and rubbed her shoulders gently. "Breathe, Jazmine."
"Yo, where is the doctor?" Riley demanded again, all the sudden serious, especially when he noticed Cindy squirming in her seat too.
"Is Mommy and Aunt Cindy okay?" Jamilah asked Granddad with a frown.
"They'll be fine, babygirl." Granddad patted her leg. "You and I are gonna wait right here until they're ready to see us." Jamilah was still frowning as she turned to look at her mother.
"Mommy will be okay, sweetie." Jazmine told her, clearly trying to appear pain-free as she looked up at her. "I promise. And Aunt Cindy too." She grinned over at Cindy, who smiled back at her and Jamilah in return.
"We'll be done before you know it." Cindy winked up at the child.
"And you'll meet your baby brother and baby cousins. And be a big sister to all three of them." Jazmine smiled at her daughter.
The little one grinned back in return. "I can't wait."
"Neither can we, Mila." Riley said, reaching over to rub her back while he glanced back at the others. "Which reminds me… where the hell is-"
"Mr. and Mrs. Freemans," A voice sounded behind them, and the group all turned back to see two nurses waiting.
"We're ready to take you now."
Riley's POV
It had been hours. And it felt like forever.
Riley felt shaky as he paced around his corner of the room some more, unconsciously spinning at his wedding band, something that had become a bit of a nervous habit for him. He felt restless… and useless… and still hot, dammit. He probably looked like a straight up nigga in his basketball shorts and tank now that he'd shed the shirt he'd worn over top of it, but he felt like he couldn't breathe.
"You're making me dizzy, stop." Cindy murmured while she watched him. She had recently been dosed up on drugs along with the epidural, and they were already seeming to be in full effect. She had been a lot further along than either of them had thought when she came in. Apparently, she had most likely been experiencing early beginnings of back labor since last night and had gone all the way throughout the day not realizing that she was experiencing mild contractions overtime. By the time the doctors looked at her, she was already about halfway dilated at five inches, and quickly progressing.
Riley had kept in touch with Huey through text using Cindy's phone. Apparently, Jazmine had been close behind her upon arrival, a little under 4 inches. With Jazmine, although they had scheduled for a C-section delivery, because Jazmine was almost midway dilated and had already began active labor, the doctors didn't want to take the risk of beginning the C-section right away. Instead, they wanted to give her body time to see if she could deliver the baby naturally while they monitored her. Riley could tell right away through text, that Huey was less than pleased about the change in plans.
Meanwhile, Riley wasn't pleased about anything at all right now. Up until today, he had loved seeing his girl pregnant throughout the entire process. This however… he definitely didn't like, and had a very difficult time managing now that the contractions were a lot closer together. He couldn't handle Cindy in pain. And to hear her moan and begin to borderline scream the way she had (both her and Jazmine from the opposite side of the hall), he didn't know how much longer he was going to make it. He just wanted someone, anyone, to give her something to knock her out so the babies could come and she wouldn't have to feel shit.
Riley glanced at Cindy's buzzing phone again to distract himself. He slightly grinned at the recent group chat photo before turning it towards Cindy. "You got your whole fan club out there." He told her. The picture featured a selfie of Caesar, Anthia, Lorena, Tom, Sarah, Granddad, and Jamilah all cheesing hard and making goofy faces.
"What they doin'?" Cindy slurred slightly with a grin, squinting as she stared at the picture closely.
"Cheering you on." Riley told her. "They're all out in the waiting room, impatiently waiting for you and Jazmine to have these kids already."
"Tryin'." Cindy told him, shifting her body in bed.
"Caesar and your cousin are on our side for you to have 'em first, so you gotta keep tryin', boo."
Cindy gave a half-grin slightly, but shifted again, not seeming really focused on him any longer. He watched the grin fall from her face while she turned her head to the corner of the room. The male-nurse the doctor had left them with was standing at the secondary monitor.
"Nurse, can you call Dr. Emerson back? And can you look? Something feels different."
He glanced up at her, while he hit a few buttons on his keyboard. "I'll certainly page Dr. Emerson, she just stepped outside for moment. But Cindy, I'm sure you're just feeling the contractions lower at your core now, so it is normal to-"
"LOOK." Cindy cut him off loudly, her eyes flashing as she glared at him. "I mean it, look." She said, kicking her legs open wider from underneath the sheet.
"You heard her man, LOOK!" Riley demanded, just as loud at the man while he pointed towards her. On normal circumstances, he would've rather socked any man in the eyes that dared to look at his wife, but in this case didn't have a choice, and frankly didn't care (much). He certainly couldn't go down to see what she was talking about. The doctor and Cindy had given Riley strict orders to stand up near her head, and to not walk past hip-level. Something about him being a faint-risk, which was some ole' bullshit.
The nurse gave them both a subtle look as he left the monitor to approach them. He leisurely sat on the stool in front of Cindy before rolling himself a little closer to lift the sheet. Riley kept his eyes on his face while he did so and noticed the change in expression probably before the man even did. It was a faint change, but Riley caught the way his eyes slightly focused and widened as he looked.
"You're starting to crown." The man said very calmly, as if it were just an average statement.
"She's what?" Riley asked immediately, but already had an anxious feeling about what that meant.
"It's time." The nurse told him, still calm as he lifted the walkie-talkie to his mouth. "Dr. Emerson to Suite 303 please."
"Oh my God." Cindy murmured, letting out a shaky breath.
"Baby breathe, I'm right here with you." Riley told her at once, gripping her hand.
She turned towards him with watery eyes. "Riley, I'm scared."
"I know you are, babe." He told her, brushing over her hair and kissing her forehead. I am too, he screamed in silence. "But I promise, you and them are going to be fine, you hear me?" He told her seriously, his hand still at the back of her neck.
Cindy didn't answer, as they both turned to see Dr. Emerson striding into the room with another nurse right on her heels. "I know that tone." She said to the nurse once she entered, swapping places with him as he stood to allow her to sit on the stool.
"She's crowning, doctor." The nurse told her, heading to the stationary monitor.
"How are the vitals?" Dr. Emerson asked, sliding on a fresh pair of gloves.
"Good, for both her and the babies."
"And the positioning?" She adjusted the mask over her mouth before beginning to lift the sheet to look.
"Baby A is in optimal fetal position."
"Perfect. Cindy, are you with me?" Dr. Emerson glanced up to address her. "I imagine you're starting to feel a lot of pelvic pressure now even though you had the epidural."
"Yes." She whimpered nervously while Riley stroked up and down her arm.
"I need you to listen to me carefully, Cindy. Because when I say push, you need to push."
Cindy nodded her head, slightly hesitantly. "I'm just worried about the babies. What if I do it wrong?"
"You are not going to do it wrong, Cindy. Both babies are right where they need to be and your first is right at your entrance." Dr. Emerson told her calmly. "If we need to stop to transition to an emergency C-section, we'll do so when the time comes, but I don't foresee that happening based on their current position." Riley felt both himself and Cindy tense at the word emergency. "All I know is that we need to start pushing now, okay?"
Cindy nodded, closing her eyes as she bit her lip. Riley kept holding and rubbing her hand as he kissed the top of her head.
"It's going to feel strange under the medication, but you push as much as I can, and don't stop until I say so."
"You've got this baby, I'm right here." Riley told her quietly into her ear, feeling his own body shake with nerves.
"Ready...?" The doctor asked, lifting the sheet up in place as she slid her chair closer.
He wasn't.
"I love you and I'm right here. You can do this." Riley told her, kissing her temple as he held her hand tightly.
Cindy finally squeezed back, just as tightly. "I love you too."
"...PUSH."
Cindy's POV
It seemed like it had been hours. And it felt like forever. But she knew that is wasn't.
Time just felt… slow.
The movement from the nurses, who were both previously bustling around the room, now seemed significantly slower. Even though two more nurses had at some point made their way into the room. The noises of the room started to sound strange even. The words from both the doctor and Riley felt almost distorted, strangely muted even though Riley was right by her ear and she could make out the way the doctor wanted her to push… and push… and push.
That, by far, was the weirdest feeling Cindy believed she ever experienced. She didn't feel pain so to speak, not the way she did on the way in and before the medicines were given to her. Since the epidural, the only thing she could feel was pressure. And now, in junction with pushing, that pressure was maximized.
She felt like she had been pushing for so long. She felt exhausted. Her head felt cloudy. She borderline felt frustrated. She was tired of pushing. All she wanted was to get…
"…one…"
These kids…
"…more…"
OUT.
"Last PUSH!" Dr. Emerson's voice registered in her mind, and Cindy was brought back, feeling herself straining and moaning as she pushed one last time. Her eyes closed as she sank back onto the pillow and her body felt slightly numb, although she could faintly feel Riley incessantly rubbing at her arm and mumbling incoherent words into her ear. His face felt wet as he kissed all over her temple and cheeks. Her brain just wasn't picking up on the words or hearing much noise at all really. Until she heard another sound, that brought her to instantly.
A baby crying.
"What?" Cindy spoke weakly, her eyes slowly beginning to blink open.
"He's here." Riley repeated again into her ear. His voice sounded thick as she felt one of his tears fall onto her cheek. "You did it. Our first son is here."
Cindy felt the tears in her eyes right away as she opened her eyes more and looked down toward her legs. Dr. Emerson had already stood from her stool and was leaning over her body, holding their baby in her arms.
"Your firstborn is here and ready for mom." The doctor told them happily, laying the baby on Cindy's chest while the other two nurses assisted in holding and drying him off.
"Oh my God," Cindy cried, looking down at the tiny life they created. "He's beautiful."
"Damn." Riley beamed, his eyes were still glistening while he stared at their son. He had a light skin tone that was closer to Riley's with a full head of dark hair already.
"Does he seem healthy?" Cindy asked, not able to take her eyes off him while they dried him.
"He's doing well." One of the nurses nodded with a smile.
"They're going to take him to finish examining him as soon as I cut the umbilical." Dr. Emerson added, already in mid-process of that.
"Damn." Riley said again, still staring at him. "This is my boy, man. My son."
"Our first son." Cindy glanced up towards him with a smile before gazing down again at their baby. "Our Elijah Jebediah."
"Elijah Jebediah Freeman." Riley nodded, that big grin coming back on his face at the name they'd been discussing for awhile. "My boy."
"Alright, you two." Dr. Emerson glanced up at them as she put down her tools. "The nurses are going to take Elijah to finish up his health exam, then they're gonna bring him back." She told them as one of the nurses started to pick him up and bundle in with the towels.
Cindy felt her heart tighten at that, already not wanting him out of her sight. She noticed the way Riley's eyes followed the nurses to the corner of the room, even stretching up to try to see better.
"Cindy, how are you feeling?" Dr. Emerson asked her, now sitting back at the stool while she lifted the sheet.
"I feel okay." She nodded, now noticing the way one of the nurses was back at the monitor. She felt her heartrate accelerate slightly as the doctor looked over to glance at the monitor closely. "Is he alright?" Cindy asked seriously, bringing Riley's attention back immediately.
"Everything is alright, but listen." Dr. Emerson told them calmly. "Your second baby is still breech, and while that's not an ideal position, I believe we can safely deliver him now that you are fully dilated, along with the fact that we see that he is significantly smaller in terms of size than your first." She explained. "If you feel up to pushing now, and I know that you're tired," The doctor said, and Cindy nodded at once. Just the word "push" had her feeling exhausted. "But if you start pushing… I think now would be our best chance."
"What if she's too tired?" Riley spoke up before she could. "What if she needs more time to rest, would she not be able to try?"
"If you're feeling that you need time to re-coop Cindy, that is completely okay and understandable. In that case though, there could be more chance of a complication the more time that passes. And if that happens, we might have to consider a C-section instead." She told them. "It is your decision."
Riley turned to her right away. "How do you feel? Be honest."
"He's healthy!" They turned their heads to the corner at the sound of one of the nurses, now walking over with Elijah swaddled in a blanket. "Perfectly healthy and happy. Six pounds on the nose." She smiled, extending the baby to Riley.
"Hey, baby boy." Riley smiled at once, holding him snugly against him. "Man, your eyes already open. Takin' it all in, huh?" He beamed, leaning him down to show Cindy. The baby's dark brown eyes were indeed open as they blinked up at his father and over to hers. He had her with just one look.
"Let's go." Cindy said, turning back to Dr. Emerson.
"What?" Riley managed to break eye contact from Elijah to look at her.
"I'm ready, I want both my babies now."
"Babe, are you sure?" Riley asked her seriously.
Cindy nodded. "You still think it'll be safe?" She asked.
"I really think so, Cindy." Dr. Emerson nodded, looking over the monitor again before sitting back on the stool and pulling herself closer. "If we need to stop for any reason, we will. But I think we can start as long as you're ready."
"I am." She told her truthfully. She felt Riley's hand slide through hers again while he held Elijah in one arm.
"We're right here, baby. You can do this." Riley told her. "I love you."
Cindy smiled at him, even though she started to feel a little pressure at her core again. "I love you both too."
"Okay Cindy…" Dr. Emerson had her attention again, glancing up at her before back down in front of her. "…Push."
Riley's POV
He couldn't believe how damn strong she was.
Less than ten minutes ago, she was pushing and preparing to bring their second child into the world. Shortly after the five-minute mark, she had done it, and he was here. He felt the tears in his eyes all over again dammit, but didn't even care as he watched their skin-to-skin contact for the first time, definitely a moment he would always have locked in his memory for both his boys.
Now here he was, sitting next to his wife as she nursed their sons at the same time. The nurses had hooked her up with a dope double-nursing pillow, and Cindy was a natural already with it. Both babies had latched on easily and seemed to be content while they breastfed.
It was unreal.
"I can't believe how tiny he is." Riley said, reaching over to stroke his youngest son's arm with his finger.
"The doctor said that he was showing smaller than his brother." Cindy told him, her voice slightly hoarse.
"I didn't expect a whole pound smaller." He replied, marveling at the difference in size between them. "But somehow he has more hair." He smirked, admiring the thick, tight curls on his head.
"My little Beanie Baby." Cindy grinned down at him. Riley glanced over towards her at that, his smirk still in place.
"You start callin' him Beanie, I'm through."
"It only makes sense, babe." She giggled.
"He's about to have so many nicknames." He teased.
"Nicknames build character." She shrugged slightly. "And persona." She added.
"With a name like his, that's definitely gonna be true."
"Do you like it though? Seriously." Cindy asked him. "We haven't signed anything, we have time to change our mind."
"For what, girl?" Riley smirked at her. "Nah… it's already grown on me. Dwight Montana." He said it out loud again.
"Dwight Montana Freeman." Cindy repeated with a smile. "After the amazing Beanie Sigel, AKA Dwight Grant."
"And the amazing Tony Montana, AKA Scarface." Riley mimicked her, making her chuckle again.
"Can you believe it, baby?" She asked him quietly, still gazing down at them. "We're parents."
"We got kids, girl… shit. I'm a daddy." He said, staring at his new purpose in life. His eyes started to feel heavy again, and he lifted them to look at Cindy. Her eyes seemed to be full of emotion too. "How you feel, Mama? You believe it?" He asked her before kissing her bare shoulder.
"Mm-mm." Cindy shook her head slowly. "They're here, right here in my arms but… it still hasn't fully sunk in yet." She said, and Riley knew what she meant. "We actually made these babies… they both are our future and I'm just so thankful." She said, her voice catching in throat.
Riley gently nuzzled his face against her cheek, kissing her temple. "I'm thankful for all of you." He whispered into her ear, planting another sweet kiss.
Cindy nuzzled against him lovingly while she glanced down and stroked each of the boys' cheeks with her fingertip. "I think they're full." She said, noticing the way they were no longer latching and their eyes were now closed.
"That good-good knocked 'em out."
"Will you grab the nurses?" Cindy giggled, giving his cheek a light kiss. The staff had graciously stepped out of the room for a few minutes to give them some privacy.
As Riley stood, he noticed Cindy's phone light up on the counter and picked it up. He hadn't even had time to announce to the others that the twins were here. He opened the thread from Huey first as he started to walk, and immediately paused mid-step, reading everything over.
"What's wrong?" Cindy asked, noticing the way he stopped.
"Huey just texted."
"And?"
"She just had the baby." Riley grinned, finishing up the text. "She ended up having to do the C-section again, but it went well. She's recovering now." He glanced at her, seeing the relief on her face.
"Thank God. I'm just happy that everything went-"
"Aw hell naw!" Riley suddenly said, staring at his phone.
"What?!" Cindy exclaimed, sounding both startled and nervous by his reaction.
"How's he gonna text the group first, actin' like Jazmine won the bet?" Riley complained. "Talkin' bout 'Xavion Malik Freeman is here.' With a picture!" He turned the phone to show Cindy.
"Awwww." Cindy smiled at the picture.
"But naw man, he cheated." Riley shook his head, quickly composing a text to the group chat to set the record straight on who delivered first. "There… huh?" He raised an eyebrow at the immediate text back. "'Pics or it didn't happen?' What the hell?" Riley grumbled at Caesar's dumbass response. He turned back to look at Cindy.
She gave him a warning look. "Boy, if you don't get the nurses! You're not about to text all them a picture with me exposed!"
Riley grinned as he watched his niece stare down at her baby brother in amazement as she gently rubbed his side. He allowed her to sit on the bed close to Jazmine while she held her newborn.
"Whatchu think, babe?"
"I love him." She said cutely. "My baby brother… Mama, how do you say it?" She looked up at her.
"Zay-Vee-On." Jazmine pronounced for her patiently, glancing away from the pictures on Cindy's phone Riley had brought over. "Xavion Malik. But you don't have to say his full name."
"I don't?"
"You can just call him Zay, Mila." Riley shrugged a casual shoulder. "Shoot, that's what I'mma call him. All kinds of names. Zay, Zave, Zay-Zay, Lil Z from the block-"
"Alllright." Jazmine shot him a look with a chuckle.
"Zay." Jamilah giggled. "Baby Zay-Zay."
"That's just fine, baby." Jazmine told her with a smile, coming to the last picture on the phone. "Thank you for showing me, Riley. They are so precious. Congratulations."
"Thanks, J. Congrats to you too. He's cute, man." He said, glancing again at his brand-new nephew. He had already gotten a chance to hold him in his arms. He seemed even tinier than Dwight. "I'll let you have time with your fam, I just wanted to stop by and see y'all. I'm sure Huey's ready to get back in here." He smirked. While Riley came in to visit Jazmine and her parents, Huey had stopped in to visit Cindy along with Granddad.
"Thank you so much for coming by, Riley." Sarah told him. "We'll stop by and visit Cindy in the next few minutes too."
"As soon as I hold my grandson one more time." Tom sniffled, tears in his eyes again.
"On that note..." Riley gave a subtle eyeroll to Jazmine. "I'm gonna head back over."
"Do you wanna take Jamilah with you to meet her cousins?" Jazmine offered. Jamilah turned to her uncle immediately.
"Can I, Unca Reezy?" She asked excitedly.
"Sure, as long as you don't mind." He grinned at Jazmine.
"Of course not." She shook her head. "Give the babies a kiss for me, honey."
"Okay!" Jamilah beamed, lifting her arms so Riley could lift her from the bed.
"Aiight, come on girl." He picked her up with a smile. "Thanks J, I'll bring her back."
"No problem. Give Cindy a hug for me."
"Nah, but I'll tell her you said hi."
"…Brat." Jazmine said to his back, making Riley laugh as he exited the room with Jamilah. Right when he did, Huey entered the narrow hallway as well.
"Hi Daddy!"
"Done visiting my family already?" Riley smirked sarcastically. Huey gave him a look as he gently brushed Jamilah's cheek with his thumb.
"I visited. I'm done." He shrugged. "Too many people."
"It was just you and Granddad."
"Caesar, Anthia, and Lorena are in there now too." He said with a pointed look. "For all I know, they snuck in."
"Could be true." Riley shrugged as well. "I'mma go introduce my niece her new cuzzos."
"Set a good example for them early, Jamilah." Huey said with a shake of his head, continuing back into Jazmine's room.
"Okay Daddy!" She beamed at his back while Riley chuckled. When he re-entered his own room, he was immediately addressed at once.
"Big POPPA!" Caesar called out loudly.
"Congratulations, they're so cute!" Anthia gushed.
"Can I live at your house?!" Lorena begged.
"You got 'live-at-MY-house' money, girl?!" Granddad demanded, causing the others to laugh. Riley glanced at Cindy, who gave him a cute shrug as she held both swaddled babies in her arms.
"Y'all gonna for sure get kicked out." Riley snickered, walking over towards the bed and sitting Jamilah down. Her eyes were wide as she stared at the boys.
"Mila, meet your cousins." Cindy told her with a smile. "This one here is Elijah." She said, patting the baby in her right arm.
"You can also call him EJ." Riley said to her.
"And this one here is Dwight… but you can also call him Beanie." Cindy smirked.
"EJ and Beanie." Jamilah smiled, studying them both carefully as they blinked back at her. Her brow crinkled slightly as she glanced up towards Cindy. "But Aunt Cindy?"
"Yes baby?"
"How are you gonna tell them apart?" She asked simply.
"That's an easy one, baby." Riley cut in with a grin. "All we're gonna do is dress EJ like a Crip and Dwight like a Blood."
"Boy." Cindy sucked her teeth while Caesar and Lorena cracked up in the back.
"I'm staying all the way out of this one." Anthia shook her head, tugging Caesar. "Let's go visit Jazmine."
"Aiight, we'll be back." He said, still laughing. Lorena followed behind him.
"What does that mean?" Jamilah asked, smiling at their laughter.
"Just another name for red and blue." He shrugged.
"Cool!"
"Yeah, it is. Ow!" Riley groaned when Granddad flicked him in the back of the head.
"Thank you, Granddad." Cindy smirked.
"My pleasure, Cutie-Pie." Granddad grinned, ignoring Riley's glare as he snapped a quick picture of Jamilah smiling at the twins. "Alright Lil Baby, the babies need to get some rest now. And you've gotta get some rest too, it's getting late. We should head back over to be with your parents."
"Okay, Granddaddy." Jamilah nodded before leaning forward to kiss both of the twins' heads. "Bye, babies." She told them sweetly.
"I'll see you soon baby." Cindy smiled, leaning down slightly to kiss the top of her head. "I love you."
"I love you too, Aunt Cindy." Jamilah replied with a grin. She turned back towards Riley and leaned out for a hug. "And I love you, Unca Reezy."
"I love you too, babygirl." He told her, scooping her into his arms. "I'll see you bright and early, okay?"
"Okay." The little one muffled a slight yawn. "Night-night."
"Night, baby." He smiled, handing her off to Granddad. "Thanks, G."
"Congratulations, boy." He responded with a smile, catching him off guard. "I'm happy for you both."
"Thanks, Granddad. So are we." He grinned.
"Y'all are definitely bout to lose your minds, but still. Congrats." He grinned back, and Riley's faltered in return.
"Uh, thanks?"
"But shoot, three new grandbabies in one day!" He was ignoring him now, beginning to walk away from him. "One with my middle name, one with your father's middle name, it's a gooood day! Gooood day! Hoo!" He began to sing lightly, practically dancing out of the room with Jamilah.
Riley shook his head as he walked back to the stool next to Cindy. She smirked as he laid his head on her shoulder. "I know you ain't about to tell me you're tired."
"I ain't gonna say it out loud, no…." He cracked an eye open to see her expression.
"Mmmmhmm. And you wrong for the Blood and Crip comment, boy." She shook her head. "That's bad foreshadowing anyway. Now they're always gonna fight."
"Just cuz me and Huey always fought doesn't mean our kids is gonna fight, what?" Riley shrugged. "They'll be fine." He sat up more to look at his wife, sliding an arm around her shoulders. "We'll all be fine. Better than fine actually."
"You promise?" Cindy grinned at him.
He nodded. "I promise you. We're gonna be great. I love you."
"I love you too, Riley." She told him softly, accepting the gently passionate kiss he gave once he leaned in. Riley would've kept kissing her had he not been interrupted by someone clearing their throat. He opened his eyes and jumped at his brother suddenly hovering over him.
"Damn nigga, may I help you-aye!" Riley exclaimed as Huey pulled him to his feet by his shirt.
"Excuse us, we've gotta step outside for a minute." Huey explained briefly to Cindy as he dragged him.
"What now?" She groaned with an eyeroll.
"Jamilah just told me that she wants to 'dress like a Crip' tomorrow, so I can only imagine who she learned that from."
The End….
Sike.
Did I give you a heart attack? I hope not XD but yoooo this chapter…. THIS chapter… took so long to write and yet it was still simple if that makes sense? It flowed and I had so much fun writing it. I wanted it to be fun and light and special and all the things, so I'm really thankful (and hopeful) that I was able to do that.
Sorry if any of you are mad about the time-jump, but if you read my last author's note, you'll know I had to speed this thing up. I want to bring this to a conclusion that both you and I are satisfied with and don't want the story to be watered down with filler. It was time.
Okay, new update: so I'm thinking that there's going to be two more chapters. Definitely one, but ideally two if I can stretch it. I really don't want to end it at 19 chapters, my weird OCD will just drive me crazy about that. This chapter is technically the last "real" chapter and the next two will be planned for a two-part epilogue (so be prepared for another time-jump).
Let me know what you guys think of the chapter! And listen, if any of you rag on my names we're squaring up on sight lmao! I don't think y'all understand, I've had this part of the story and these names especially picked out since 2012… and that literally is not an exaggeration. But shit, I feel old, I can't believe how much time has gone by. Here we are though :)
Disclaimers: There are none, I own nothing but this storyline.
I really hope you guys like this. Let me know. And I'll be working on the epilogues soon. But next is Friends First, Benefits Second… cuz ya girl is halfway done with the next chapter on that one boiiii!
Much love.
