Omake: Driving Lessons

"Phew!" With an exhausted sigh, Hisashi leans back in his seat, stretching his arms high above his head.

The Rustbucket's engine finally settles down after Hisashi put it to park in a store's large parking lot. The lot if mostly empty give or take a few cars closer to the store's entrance, giving the massive RV plenty of room to itself.

Hisashi Rolls his neck and shoulders, trying to loosen them after such a long drive. "What a drive. I thought we'd never make it."

Izuku, seated in the passenger seat, worriedly stares up at his Dad. "Are you sure you're okay? You've been driving everywhere all by yourself."

"I'm good. Trust me I'm used to it." Hisashi stops and turns, throwing a certain droid a very accusing look. "Although, Chopper could have driven anytime he liked."

Chopper waves him off. ^Wa wa wa.^

"Off duty?! We're on vacation! We're all off duty!"

Izuku chuckles sheepishly before a sense of guilt washes over him. "S-sorry I couldn't drive." He shies away nervously. "I mean I would but…I don't know how."

Hisashi pauses, thinking over the possibility. "Would you like to learn?"

"Learn?" Izuku sits up in surprise, taking a moment to process his Dad's offer. "As in, learn to drive?!"

"Yeah, I'll teach!" Hisashi smiles, becoming very excited about the prospect of having a genuine father and son teaching moment.

"Um, are you sure? I mean, what if I mess up?"

"It's okay. It'll be easy just…just pretend you're riding an animal." Hisashi smiles, turning the wheel this way and that in a playful manner. "Like a Bantha!"

Izuku does a double take. "A…what?"

Without missing a beat Hisashi explains. "It's a desert dwelling ball of fluff that moves at a snail's pace. But either way you get my point, right?"

"N-no…"

An awkward silence befalls the RV as neither Midoriya knows how to move on from there.

But that doesn't stop Hisashi from trying. "Well either way let's get you into the driver's seat!"

"Um, o-okay!"

While the two Midoriyas switch places, Kraab watches on from the backseat. "Oh, this is gonna be fun."

Once adjusted, Hisashi proceeds to coach Izuku through the steps. "Alright, firstly adjust your seat and mirrors. You wanna be comfortable but you also need to be able to see everything." He smiles, holding his head high feeling like he's a master granting his student some great knowledge.

He continues on, his speech getting faster and faster as he mutters away. "Always check your mirrors and watch out for other drivers, especially the idiots that think they're in a Fast and Furious movie and try to weave in and out of traffic. Seriously, why did they do that especially during rush hour?! I mean they cut across every single lane only to make it one or even two cars ahead and that's it! Cutting of semi-trucks and just barely grazing the other cars cause they don't have the patience! Seriously, why are people such impatient dumbasses?!" He practically screams in frustration, biting his tongue, and instead releasing his aggression in a long exhale.
Upon calming down he finds Izuku, Krab, and Chopper staring back at him with concern and worry in their eyes.

Kraab blinks away the shock. "Wow. That felt real personal there for a second…"

Izuku slowly nods his head in agreement. "Yeah…"

Hisashi shakes it off and presses on like it never happened. "Never mind that. Anyway, make sure you have your hands at ten and two."

"Okay, got it!" Izuku does so and waits for further instructions. "Now what?"

Hisashi gives him a smile while gesturing towards the empty parking lot. "Now you drive."

Izuku blinks, his mind going blank. "I what?"

"I believe that experience is the best teacher." Hisashi explains, leaning back in his seat and basking at his teaching prowess. "We're in a massive parking lot and it's empty. So, you have nothing to worry about. Just give the Rustbucket a test drive."

"Oh, a-alright then." Izuku nervously looks around, finding the gear shift and setting it to what he thinks might be right. "O-okay, I-I t-think I'm r-ready. Maybe."

Hisashi laughs at his unfounded nervousness. "Floor it, Champ!"

"O-Okay!" Izuku slams down on the gas pedal!

And immediately the RV shoots backwards slamming into the light pole directly behind it!

The Midoriyas freezes in place looking like they all had a heart attack at the same moment.

After calming down enough to process what happened, Izuku checks the gear shift again. "Ooohhh. R is for Reverse not for Race… Oops."

Hisashi stares at him like he grew a second head. "H-How did you not realize that?"

"I don't know! I usually walk or take the train everywhere, okay!

From the back, Kraab smiles despite his head laying upside down on the ground. "I knew it…this is gonna be fun."

After some actual driving around the parking lot and getting used to the proper gears, Hisashi jumps back into the passenger seat for another test. "Okay, now we know what the gears are and how they work. Now it's time to put it all into practice. And the best way to do that is to parallel park! All you gotta do is park between this plastic trash can and that plastic trash can."

Hisashi points to said trash cans which are perfectly paralleled to the Rustbucket already. They are even spread far apart giving Izuku more than enough room to maneuver around.

Izuku takes a breath before moving the gear shift. "So, I put it in reverse-Aahh!" He accidentally floors it as they go into the reverse and bump the can. "Aahh!" In a panic he screams and sets the gear shift to Drive wheels till flooring it! "Aahh!" He screams as he hits the front trashcan. "Aahh! Aahh!" And again, and again the cycle continues with Izuku Driving forward and back, hitting each can with every step of the gas. "Aahh! Aahh! Aahh! Aahh!"

He doesn't calm down until the trash cans are all but tossed aside by the RV. Its wheels screeching to a stop as Izuku finally pulls himself together.

Hisashi finally inhales, trying his best to seem reassuring and supportive. "Ch-Champ, I-I think your parallel parking needs a little work."

'That's putting it nicely.' Izuku can't help but think as he drops his head onto the steering wheel causing the RV's horn to go off.

After fixing up what was left of the trash cans, Hisashi maneuvered the RV and lined it up with an alleyway that's between the grocery store and the surrounding buildings. "Okay, let's move onto something easier. I've already set the RV up for you. All you need to do is back it up."

Izuku breaths, gripping the wheel as he watches the rearview mirror. "Back it up. Got it."

He begins to shake, worrying that the back alleyway might be a little too narrow for him.

Hisashi quickly picks up on his discomfort. "What's the matter?"

"N-nothing. I guess I'm worried you're gonna say that I'm doing something wrong."

"Don't worry about what I think., okay. Tell you what, while you give this a try I won't say anything, deal?" Maybe this way Izuku will have one less thing to stress about.

He must have the same logic as he agrees to the deal. "D-deal, I guess."

"Go ahead then"

Izuku takes a breath and let's go of the brake. "Backing up."

The instant the RV's rear enters the alleyway it's sides grind against the dumpster and walls.

Izuku slams the RV to a stop. "What's that sound?!"

Before Hisashi could answer, Kraab cuts him off. "Ah, ah, ah! You're not allowed to say anything!" He smiles, turning back to Izuku. "It's nothing! You're good! Just keep going!"

"Oh! Okay…"

And so, he does, and the screeching continues. All the while Kraab eggs him on, telling him that he's all good to keep going.

"Keep going! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! You're good! Annnnd stop!"

The metaphorical grin on the cyborg's face lights up as he examines the extensive scratches and scrapes all over the RV's sides. "Don't worry kid we'll buff out those scratches." He mockingly grins up at Hisashi. "It's not a problem, right?"

Hisashi can't even bring himself got answer.

After processing the damage, Hisashi sits back in his seat, considering that maybe he should give it up. "This isn't working."

Izuku shrinks into his seat in shame. "S-sorry."

"It's not your fault." Hisashi sighs, accepting that he was the one that messed up. "I got too excited. I mean I'm having you practice by driving around an RV. What part of that is supposed to be simple?"

"S-sorry, and I…really wanted to learn."

"And you still will." Hisashi's sure of it and he knows exactly how he's gonna do it.. "Hoently, I should have started with this instead!" Without any more of an explanation, he gets up and scrambles towards the storage area, filing through the drawers for something.

"What are you looking for?"

"I got something here that will guarantee that you will be able to drive the Rustbucket."

"What is it?" Izuku grows excited, getting up from his seat, wondering what this magical item could be. "Hand it over-Oof!" The massive weight of a giant book dropped into his arms nearly causes him to fall over as dust flies in his face from the worn-out cover and pages.

Izuku blinks down at the old book in confusion before setting it down onto the table. "Dad?"

Hisashi smirks at his own brilliance. "You'll be ready to drive right after you read this!"

"Wha…"

Hisashi smiles, sliding a gentle hand across the surface of the dictionary-like book. "This is the Rustbucket's history. Every Midoriya that's ever driven this RV has inscribed their experiences with it inside this book." Just stories, such memories, such history. This RV truly is a treasure. "Before you can drive a vehicle you gotta know them. Feel their engine humming along with your heart and become one!" He then undercuts his whole speech with a casual shrug. "Also, because it's a good read with a little bit of family history thrown in."

In response, Izuku gives his Dad a blank judgmental stare. "Dad, it's just a vehicle. Mom's got a car at home, it's no big deal-Ooff!" He nearly falls over from the sheer weight of the book a Hisashi unceremoniously drops it into his hands.

"Don't care!" Hisashi chimes. "From here on out you're not allowed to drive the Rustbucket unless you read this cover to cover. And that's final."

Izuku examines the book taking notice of how thick it really is. The sheer width of this thing is bigger than his head. Maybe...maybe it's not so bad. Maybe most of it is maps and pictures. But there's only one way to find out. "Are there pictures?"

Hisashi's smile grows as he gleefully announces. "There are diagrams!"

"NOOOOoooo!"

Hisashi's expression turns into a deadpan stare. "Dramatic much?" He turns away heading back to the driver seat, "Well anyway have fun with that. You can read while I drive the rest of the way." Before sitting down, he spins around and gives Izuku one last heads up. "Oh by the way I just thought I'd warn you, your Great Grandpappy was too heavy on description and didn't give as much effort to plot. So, yeah, it gets wordy."

"Why though?!" Izuku gasps. "It's just a vehicle!"

"The Rustbucket isn't just a vehicle." Hisashi turns away, petting the RV's dashboard. "She's family."

"I'm growing very concerned with my family."

*This Omake takes inspiration from serval places: Phineas and Ferb, SpongeBob, and Amphibia.

*UPDATE* So, this last week has been kicking my butt. As such I have not made as much progress as I would have liked on Ch.60: Null and Void. Truth be told I think this one is gonna take three weeks or so as next week is most likely gonna be just as tough on me as this week was.

That being said I cannot guarantee that there will be an Omake next week. Either because I'll be too tired, or I rather spend the time I got to work on the actual chapter. Either way I will try to do a very short Omake to at least let you guys know when for sure I will have the chapter ready.
