Minutes before the farmer's tragic death, Connor Goyer, the temp veterinarian who had opened the Pegomastax's cage, left the Ark through a service door on Level 1, north side, and merely pushed it back behind him before walking away, towards the old farm. Along the way, he was joined by two of the temp keepers, who gave him a nod which he returned. Those were his two accomplices: Nikhil Sanders, a bespectacled young man in his thirties with shoulder-length black hair, coppery skin, a growing beard and fleshy lips; and Maud Friedman, a woman in her twenties with long dreadlocks. They went to the room where the equipment necessary for the various maintenance works was kept.
As the door had been unlocked so that the operation's participants could quickly take the tools they might need for their tasks, the three temps simply opened the door and went inside, heading for shelves where they each grabbed large cutting pliers before leaving.
Then they separated and whereas Nikhil and Maud headed for the Jurassic Plain, Connor went to the Asian Plain, and more specifically to the corrals that adjoined the main paddock. In one of those was another animal he intended to free, an herbivore whose size and aggressive temperament had been carefully considered criteria when he and his accomplices had hatched their plan. Standing in front of the corral gate, Connor saw the dinosaur at the back, rolled into a ball in the shade of a tree. The sabotaging vet looked around, checked that there was no one nearby, and broke the gate's lock on the gate with his pliers. The noise woke the dinosaur, which then raised her head to look towards the gate, which Connor opened before dashing to the main enclosure where he repeated the operation, intending to free the shantungosaurs as well.
At the Jurassic Plain, Nikhil did the same while Maud kept watch, looking at the Cretaceous Plain's barn, where there was a large concentration of keepers, still busy putting animals in the trucks. When the apatosaurs paddock's gate was wide open, they ran west to the large carnivores' sector and sent a message to Connor, asking him to join them there.
On Site D's map, Franklin noticed that one of the dots was out of its paddock and was moving, rather slowly, along the path which linked the hacienda to the Predators' Camp.
"Uh oh. I think we've got an animal outside of its paddock," he informed Claire.
She was looking through the window, towards the jungle. She was concerned about Blue's condition and especially by the fact that Owen had been left alone with one of Wheatley's men.
"Which one is it?" She asked, returning her eyes to the screens of the ACU monitoring station.
He passed the cursor over said dot and a small window appeared. In it, a code was indicated as well as the name of the species: Therizinosaurus.
"The Therizinosaurus..."
Returning from the bathroom, Jocelyn had heard them and she immediately went to the CCTV room, where Benito was still sitting in front of the computer.
"Benito! Put on the cameras from the alley south of the Asian Plain. We have an asset out of containment!" She ordered urgently.
"Uh, you know the cameras in this alley haven't been operational for months," he reminded her.
She widened her eyes in astonishment.
"Why?"
"You told us we didn't have the budget for their maintenance," the guard answered in a slightly accusatory tone.
"Can you then display the corrals adjoining the paddock?" Claire asked him, entering the room in her turn. "Yuriko is supposed to be there today."
While the guard complied, she added:
"Franklin and I warned the keepers. Jocelyn, you must sound the alarm all across the facility and order the ACU to capture this animal immediately."
"The bulk of their forces is at the station or on the road. And Claire, I know what I have to do. I know my job," the manager replied coldly.
On the central screens, the corrals' footage was displayed and on one of them, they saw that the gate of the Therizinosaurus' corral was open.
The three exchanged a look of fear. Someone had opened the paddock. They were being sabotaged.
Struck from behind, the temp keeper collapsed to the ground and Nikhil lifted his unconscious body, carrying him towards a clump of bushes in the middle of which he threw him. The saboteur then turned to his two accomplices, who were in the process of bringing one of the transport trucks closer to the gate of Toro's paddock. On truck's flatbed, there was a container containing Ariadne. She and Asterion, contained in another truck parked a stone's throw away, were ready to be send to the station when Connor, Nikhil and Maud had moved into action. The trio had waited for the keepers to depart upon learning of the therizinosaur's escape, leaving only the temp to watch the trucks. Getting rid of him had been easy. He hadn't even be worried when he saw Maud approaching him, occupying his attention while Nikhil approached from behind.
Once they were close enough to the gate of Toro's paddock, Maud stopped the truck and taking a pair of pliers, Connor broke the gate's padlock. Then he and Nikhil opened it wide, kicked it and even shouted to attract the attention of the paddock's occupant.
Unlike his two congeners, Toro was going to be sent to the United States by plane within the week and thus, he had been left in his paddock. Intrigued, the burnt carnotaur showed up and stared at them, but they didn't wait for him to rush at them and immediately got into the truck, Nikhil on the driver's side and Connor on the passenger side, as Maud had freed the steering wheel to sit in the middle. While her companions closed their doors, she grabbed a tablet that had been left in the truck and looked at the other truck's container.
That one, as well as the one in the back of their truck, were part of a recent series of high-tech containers whose opening and closing could be controlled remotely via tablets such as the one held by Maud. InGen had claimed that this technology would allow them to avoid sending people to operate the container's doors and thus minimize the risks in the event of an accident, as the corporation lost employees during animals' transfer in the past. The saboteur tapped on the tablet for a moment then pressed a button, activating the opening of Ariadne's and Asterions' containers. The two predators being awake, they should scamper off at any moment. The saboteurs just had to wait and they hoped that the carnotaurs would not take too long to leave the area because the trio still had to do in this sector before fleeing.
Indeed, in addition to the carnotaurs, they also planned to release Miriam the acrocanthosaur, which InGen's crews had left alone that day, since she was going to be one of the cargo flights' passengers. This had not been the case with Pierce, which, contrary to initial plans, had been sent to the station because it had finally been decided to make him travel on board the Arcadia. Freeing the female Acrocanthosaurus was the last step in the saboteurs' plan and while the carnivores and other freed animals would wreak havoc and distract the guards and keepers, Nikhil, Maud and Connor would take the opportunity to flee the site and the area. . So far, their plan was going without any hiccup.
Cautiously, Toro stepped through the gate, looking from side to side, as if he expected that all this was nothing but a ruse. Then he saw Ariadne rush out of the truck and flee towards the sector's exit. Noting that nothing was stopping the younger carnotaur, Toro knew he had regained freedom and trotted in the same direction as Ariadne, ignoring the trio of saboteurs in their truck as well as Asterion, which remained lying on his stomach in his container, wondering what was going on. When the burnt carnotaur passed by his truck, he even let out some sort of frightened yelp.
As Toro had left, the trio decided to go to the acrocanthosaurs' paddock and Maud first activated the closure of their truck's container but through the wing mirror, they noticed that the black carnotaur was still not out of his container.
"Wait, he still hasn't come out," Nikhil pointed out.
"We have to encourage him," said Maud.
"How? With biscuits?" Connor asked her sarcastically.
"I might have an idea," Nikhil told them.
He made a U-turn with the truck, in order to position themselves in front of Asterion's container and the latter, which had decided to stay a little longer inside while waiting for the way to be clear. Nikhil pressed the horn, to scare the dinosaur and encourage it to move away. The carnotaur still didn't move and impatience grew within the trio while Nikhil continued to press the horn. Connor then rolled down his door window and pulled his upper body out of the cabin.
"Hey, you're free! Go! Come on, run away!" He shouted at Asterion.
The carnotaur jerked upright and sprung out of the container to rush towards them, taking Connor by surprise.
"Connor!" Nikhil yelled.
As Asterion closed the distance between him and them, Connor brought his upper body back inside the cabin and started to roll up the window, but it was in vain as Asterion reached the cabin at this moment and poked his head inside. The saboteurs screamed in terror and instinctively Connor laid on Maud's and Nikhil's laps to escape the carnotaur's jaws. Aware that they had to change their plans, Nikhil prepared to move. It was then that he saw Connor kicking the predator's snout in an attempt to repel him.
"Connor, no!"
But it was too late. Just as Connor's foot was about to give him another kick, Asterion tilted his head back slightly, opened his jaws and projected them forward before closing them on the saboteur's leg in the blink of an eye. Then the predator yanked, ripping Connor's leg off, and the veterinarian realized his plight only the next moment. When he saw blood spurting out from under his knee and splattering the seat and the door, he screamed louder, exciting the carnotaur even more. Suddenly, Nikhil pressed on the accelerator and the truck left, threatening to wring the neck of Asterion who had just stuck his head inside again and had to pull it out immediately. While Maud settled Connor in a more comfortable position and made him a makeshift bandage to limit the blood's loss, Nikhil headed for the sector's exit.
"We can't go to the breach. We have to force the roadblock at the gate!" He declared.
"We'll never make it…" Connor moaned.
"We have to try, for you!" Maud said.
It was then that the carnotaur attacked again, ramming the cabin and making the saboteurs let out frightened cries. At the wheel, Nikhil then pressed the accelerator again, beginning to drive beyond the recommended limit inside the facility. The carnotaur found it harder and harder to keep up, the distance between him and the truck widened, and just after they passed the Baryonyx paddock, he stopped chasing them. As the saboteurs sped towards the Jurassic Plain and the site's eastern limits beyond, Asterion looked around. On his right, an alley ran alongside the Predators' Camp; ahead of him, another led to the sauropod sector, the Cretaceous Plain and the belt of fields; on its left was the entrance to the trail leading to the dilophosaurs' paddock and the jungle. Sniffling, he caught the scent of the two other carnotaurs and following it, he realized that they had gone to his right, heading to the heart of the facility. He decided to do the same.
Meanwhile, the saboteurs passed the Jurassic Plain's barn and soon, they also passed in front of the portal that Nikhil had opened earlier but while they had seen Asterion take another direction and that they thought they were out of that danger, they went straight into another and suddenly, Maud's eyes widened.
"Watch out!" She shouted, having just seen something large moving behind a curtain of trees to their right.
When the huge animal appeared in front of them, starting to cross the track, Nikhil pressed the brake pedal as hard as he could. Hearing the truck, the male Apatosaurus stopped and turned his head to look at it. Seeing him approaching rapidly, he rumbled.
Driving at full speed in their flight and having seen the Apatosaurus a little late, the saboteurs did not have the distance to brake safely and the truck hit the animal. The blow wasn't strong enough to hurt him, but it was enough to piss him off. Thinking he was under attack, the sauropod pivoted, in order to face the vehicle, and backed up a few steps before pounding the ground with his forelegs. Wishing to avoid this new danger, Nikhil started to reverse and looked around for a way out, but the animal brought his spiny neck down on the cabin, using it like a club. The spines pierced the sheet metal, moved down into the cabin, and before he could do anything, one of them thrusted itself into Nikhil's skull. It stayed buried in his brain for a moment and then pulled back when the animal lifted his neck. The saboteur, killed instantly, collapsed face first against the steering wheel and Maud cried out in horror as blood and pieces of brains fell onto his neck. Connor meanwhile, had stopped screaming for a few moments already and seemed to pale from second to second. Hearing the scream, the Apatosaurus thought the truck was still alive and while Maud sobbed, he approached, only stopping when his legs were in front of the hood. When he reared up on his hind legs to stand upright and brandish his front legs, Maud knew she couldn't stay there and turned towards the door on Connor's side. Aware that the carnotaur had damaged the door too much in its attack for her to open it, she slipped through the gap left by the lowered window and fell off the vehicle. As she received the landing's shock, there was a huge crash in her back and pieces of metal even fell on her. While moaning, Maud began to crawl towards the edge of the track and turned around only when she was in the grass. She saw that the apatosaurus had struck the cabin with his front legs, digging a hole in its roof. He withdrew his feet and then struck again. As Maud realized that they had to be smashing Nikhil and Connor to a pulp, a rush of adrenaline made her get up and run. The Apatosaurus spotted her but preferred to continue to attack the truck. Maud kept running, crossing an entire field before disappearing into the woods beyond, where the breach mentioned by Nikhil was. She couldn't help but think that if they had been more careful with Asterion and during their escape, Nikhil and Connor would be running alongside her. Their inexperience, their recklessness and their pride had led them to defeat.
"No... Not the carnos!" Franklin whimpered as he saw the three dots associated with the horned theropods moving away from their enclosures and heading towards the heart of the facility.
Standing behind him, Claire stared at the screen on the right, where the satellite map of Burgo Nuevo's surroundings had given way to surveillance footage. One of them showed the gate of Toro's paddock wide open, while another showed that the transport container of the truck left behind was empty.
Claire grabber her radio.
"Alert to all units. The carnotaurs are out of containment! I repeat: The carnotaurs are out of containment!"
"Copy that," they replied urgently. "Sound the alarm!"
She turned back to the box containing the alarm's button and noticed that Jocelyn was closer to it than her. But even though she had heard the guard answering Claire, Site D's manager remained dazed, still struggling to realize that they were in the middle of a big crisis.
"Jocelyn!" Claire barked.
Jocelyn jumped and regaining a grip on herself, she finally went to the box, lifted the lid and pressed the red button it contained.
The next moment, an alarm sounded throughout the facility and over the loudspeakers a pre-recorded female voice summoned non-essential employees to the nearest shelter and ordered those with the necessary clearance to take weapons. On the CCTV room's monitors, the facility's eastern gate was seen being closed, two guards deploying in front of the western gate, various groups of employees running in the aisles, and Alex's group abandoning their search for the Pegomastax to rush to the armoury or the keeper's office. On the right screen of the ACU station, Claire saw a window showing the Asian Plain's portal wide open and the shantungosaurs in the background. She picked up her radio again.
"Horatio, Vinny. The Asian Plain's gate is open. Close it before the shantungosaurs escape."
"Aye aye, boss!" Vinny replied, giving the fallen park director a small smile in spite of the situation.
Having heard the word boss, Jocelyn cringed, irritated that her subordinates were more loyal to Claire, that pariah, than to her. She then saw Benito leave the CCTV room and head for the exit, phone in hand.
"I'm calling the ACU and Torres," he told her.
Jocelyn nodded and the guard left the room. Once in the corridor, he made his call.
"Adrian? We've got a big problem here," he informed his contact.
When the alarm had sounded, Horatio and Vinny were following the therizinosaur, which had taken the alley between the veterinary observation paddock and the old farmhouse, bypassing the Ark to reach the southern part of the facility. They had to abandon this pursuit, starting to turn around to get weapons at the Ark but learning in the next minute that the shantungosaurs could escape any second, they had decided to go directly to the Asian Plain.
Thus, after crossing the parking lot by the keepers' office, they entered the alley which started from the latter to join the one which connected the hacienda to the Predators' Camp and ran past the Asian Plain's gate. They passed first the Mussaurus enclosure, then the Udanoceratops', now empty like the first, but when they had just passed an Administration employee who was standing on the alley with a confused look with her phone on her ear, they froze momentarily upon seeing the silhouette of a carnotaur behind the trees to their left. The predator was trotting down the alley beyond and before he could see them, Horatio dragged Vinny to the nearest thicket and they disappeared into the foliage just as the carnotaur arrived at the intersection level and turned. A shiver of horror ran down the spines of the two keepers when they noticed that their colleague had not seen the carnotaur.
"Carnotaur! Watch out!" They warned her as she was still on the phone.
Having heard their voices, she turned first to the thickets where they were hiding and then to the alley. When she saw Toro trotting towards her, a shocked expression appeared on her face and she dropped her device. The burnt carnotaur opened his mouth and just before he could bite her, she threw herself out of his way. But instead of stopping to grab her between his jaws, he didn't slow down, just growled and continued towards the Ark, preferring to taste freedom than indulge in energy-consuming slaughter.
"You're okay?" Horatio asked their colleague after coming out of the bushes while Vinny adjusted the air horn he wore on his belt, similar to those sometimes used at sporting events.
She nodded.
"I'm fine," she replied, still in shock. "Close the paddock's gate, I can handle myself!"
Letting her stand up and heading for the nearest shelter, Horatio and Vinny resumed their run towards the Asian Plain portal and at the intersection, they turned left. The gate was in sight, about thirty meters away, and beyond it the corrals adjoining the paddock and its barn were visible. Vinny looked inside the enclosure. The shantungosaurs were still far from the gate but one of them was already looking in its direction, and the keepers knew they must have already realized that something was not as usual.
"Quick!"
They started to run towards the gate but when they only had a few meters left to cross, one of the giant hadrosaurs, an adult female, suddenly let out a loud and prolonged bellow. When the keepers heard it, they froze, recognizing the type of sound. It was an alarm bellow. The shantungosaurs had perceived a potential danger and they had not.
Are they still smelling Toro?
They did not worry about it, they had to close that gate. When they reached it and almost threw themselves on it to firmly grab the thick bars and begin to slide it, the threat, until then hidden behind the barn and the corrals, appeared at the intersection between this alley and the one that passed behind the corrals and the barn to go up towards the north and the Jurassic Plain. It was a carnotaur, the smallest of the three they had. Ariadne.
"Horatio, Vinny. One of the carnos is heading your way! Be quick!" Claire warned them on the radio.
"Yeah, we can see her..." Horatio muttered while the carnotaur had spotted them.
He and his colleague had a short moment of hesitation, not knowing whether to flee or carry out their task at all costs. If they did that, they might be able to close the gate, but as soon as they would try to escape, Ariane would be upon them in an instant and tear them to pieces before they could escape her. If they fled now without closing the gate, not only would Ariadne start chasing them and catch up with them further, but the shantungosaurs would also take the opportunity to leave their enclosure, and the ambient chaos irritating them, they would seek to leave the facility and the guards at the gates weren't going to be able to stop them. If the shantungosaurs reached Burgo Nuevo, they could inflict as much damage as a herd of elephants. It would be a disaster for all: For the municipality, for InGen and for the animals themselves, as this kind of situation forced the adoption of drastic measures to say the least. In Asia, rampaging elephants which ended up in villages or towns were usually put down by the authorities before the situation could worsen. They no longer had the choice.
"Inside…" Horatio whispered to Vinny.
Realizing what he meant by that, his colleague nodded and watched the Carnotaurus out of the corner of his eye. Ariadne had not yet dashed forward. She was just staring at them with curiosity mixed with appetite, keeping her head tilted sideways. It would have been an amusing sight, in other circumstances. Slowly, the two keepers continued to slide the portal, like nothing had happened and avoided making sudden gestures in order to not trigger her attack, or at least delay it. But when two-thirds of the portal had been slid, the carnotaur straightened her head and decided to attack, charging towards Horatio and Vinny.
"Now!" Horatio shouted while the shantungosaurs stirred and bellowed in worry.
The two keepers let go of the bars, rushed into the paddock and once on the other side, they grabbed the bars and tried to finish sliding the gate as quickly as possible. However, just before they could close it, Ariadne poked her head through the remaining opening, blocking the portal. With all their strength, Horatio and Vinny tried to hold the portal in place, but the carnotaur was much stronger. They wouldn't be able to struggle with her for long, and in a moment she would manage to push the portal and enter the paddock too, where she would catch up with them and kill them while the hadrosaurs would flee, ruining their plan. Horatio then remembered that Vinny was carrying an air horn, which they had used earlier that day to round up some animals.
"The horn!" He screamed.
Vinny let go of the portal, immediately grabbed the horn, pointed it towards Ariadne, and pressed it. Horatio winced upon hearing the noise and surprised, the carnotaur backed up and straightened, turning her head towards Vinny, who pressed the horn again while Horatio took the opportunity to finally close the gate and lock it. Faced with the new honks, Ariadne shook her head, bothered by the noise. She looked back at Vinny, realizing that it was the odd object he was holding that was making that horrible noise, and she growled in frustration when she realized they had tricked her. With her prey now out of her reach, the carnotaur looked at them for a moment and then moved away, trotting along the aisle in search of new ones. The two keepers sighed and stood there to catch their breath for a moment.
It was then that they heard a snort behind them, similar to that of a horse or a bull. Horatio looked at the horn in Vinny's hands.
"Shit…" he swore, realizing they had fallen out of the frying pan and into the fire.
The two keepers slowly turned around and saw that Bucephalus was staring at them intensely while the other shantungosaurs stayed behind him, looking at them too but not looking as aggressive. Frightened, Vinny dropped the horn, which made a tiny honk.
The Shantungosaurus inflated the sac near his nostrils, reared up on his hind legs, and let out a bellow so deafening it could be heard throughout much of the compound. The next moment, Horatio and Vinny felt vibrations in their bodies and thought they were going to make them lose control of their bowels. The hadrosaur then dropped heavily onto his forelegs, snorted while he scraped the ground, and waggled his tail sideways. He looked like a bull about to charge, a sixteen-ton bull.
"Run…" Horatio told Vinny.
Bucephalus bellowed again and dashed forward, charging at them.
When she reached Site D's perimeter fence, Maud began to move along it, looking for the exit that had been prepared for them. She heard screams, coming from inside the facility. If InGen's men managed to catch her, she was finished. She had to disappear before they could spot her. She finally managed to find the exit, consisting of a hole that an accomplice had cut in the lower portion of the fence, large enough for a crawling person to pass through. She hurried across it, even going so far as to scrape her back in her haste, and once on the other side she immediately got up and ran through the undergrowth. Shortly after, she got out and reached the road, on which their contact had been going back and forth since they had given him their signal. Finally spotting her, he pulled up to her level and unlocked the doors so she could get in.
"Where are Connor and Nikhil?" he asked her.
Seeing her shake her head sadly, he knew they hadn't made it. Before she could even buckle up, they left, driving south, to San José. No participant of InGen's Operation Fallen Kingdom heard from Maud Friedman again, and no one knew who had sent them.
