Arriving at the stairwell's door, the one they had taken earlier on the way down from the security offices, Jocelyn rushed to it and pressing frantically on the handle, she tried to open it, forgetting that Benito had locked it. Claire, whom she had outrun by dashing earlier, passed her and realizing her action was futile, Jocelyn abandoned the door and followed the fallen park director to the back door at the very end of the hallway, the same taken by the traitorous veterinarian Connor Goyer after his first misdeed. As it was big enough to let him through, they knew Asterion had probably come in that way. As the carnotaur had just turned away from the therizinosaur to chase them, Claire suddenly stopped when she saw that their way was blocked. Another animal had just crossed the threshold, a second carnotaur, Ariadne. The female carnotaur watched the two women and then her paddockmate running in their direction, growling in his advance.

"The door," Claire whispered suddenly to Jocelyn.

Said door was only a few meters to their right while Ariadne was a dozen meters away. If they dashed ahead of her, they could reach her and enter the kennel beyond, where a staircase would allow them to escape the carnotaurs which would be delayed by the door for a moment. They rushed towards the latter and Ariadne moved inside the building, gradually gaining speed while Asterion joined them. Claire and Jocelyn hoped no one had locked it. Otherwise, they would only emerge from this hallway in several pieces. Fortunately, the door came towards them when Claire pulled on the handle and Jocelyn immediately rushed into the kennel which resounded with the cries of various animals, agitated or even frightened due to the presence of the carnotaurs. Claire followed her immediately, slipping between the two panels and behind her, jaws snapped in the air. The opening she had left being insufficient to allow the passage of a carnotaur, even that of a subadult such as Ariadne, she and Jocelyn should be able to reach the staircase before they're caught up. Behind her, beyond the door, she heard grunts and hisses from the two carnotaurs which were probably bickering after accidentally bumping into each other. Claire focused on the metal spiral staircase further into the kennel, which Jocelyn had almost reached.

Suddenly, the doors of the kennel door were pushed inwards and the cries of its residents redoubled when Asterion and Ariadne entered that part of the building. The gazes of the two carnotaurs immediately turned to the two women and they swooped down on them, beginning to close the distance between them at a frightening speed. Jocelyn began to climb the dilapidated staircase at speed, the metal creaking under her feet, and Claire started climbing in her turn soon after. But when the fallen park director reached the middle part, a brutal shock made her lose her balance and fall backwards. Asterion had just charged the staircase, which began to creak audibly. Claire narrowly interrupted her fall by clinging to the bars of the guardrail and blocking her shoes under the edge of a step. Seeing her in a precarious position, Asterion tried to tear the fingers of her prosthesis, which she brought back inside the stairs just in time. Reaching the lowest steps, Ariane passed her front body inside the staircase, gently set foot on the first step, and to Claire's astonishment, tried to climb it. As for Jocelyn, she had been able to reach the top of the stairs in time and started heading for an exit door, taking a mezzanine which ran along the room's entire periphery.

"Jocelyn!" Claire shouted, begging her to help her while her mask slid off her face and its strap began to slide down her ponytail.

Site D's manager paused, looked at her and the carnotaurs seeking to grab her, then ran off, heading for the exit door. At the same time, the mask slipped from Claire's head and began to slide down the stairs towards Ariadne, which shifted sideways and grunted as she moved haphazardly up the stairs, threatening to stumble at every step.

"Craven!" The fallen park director yelled furiously.

She straightened up with a grunt, started to climb the remaining steps on all fours, then got back to her feet when Asterion's assaults on the staircase threatened to make it yield at any second. Seeing this, Ariadne gave up her pursuit of Claire and sought to leave the staircase, sliding backwards. Claire finally reached the top and as soon as she stepped onto the mezzanine, running towards the door taken by Jocelyn, the staircase came down off the mezzanine and the two carnotaurs moved away as it collapsed. Their pursuit of the two women proving unsuccessful, they growled in frustration and left the kennel.

Passing other cages, some occupied and others not, Claire reached the door, opened it, walked through it, and closed it behind her before leaning against the nearby wall to catch her breath for a moment.

She was in a dark service corridor, which stretched in a straight line from side to side for a considerable distance. Opposite the wall separating it from the kennel, the corridor was bounded by long glass walls, which revealed a huge empty hall whose middle part was dimly lit by a series of windows on the roof, leaving its sides in shadow. On its ceiling, Claire saw rails that once supported robotic arms: This was the hatchery and once, rows of incubators occupied the room.

Further along the glass walls, the fallen park director saw a door ajar and wondered if Jocelyn had been there. She took it, passing in the hatchery. Once in the middle of the hall, she scanned it.

"Jocelyn! Hey, Jocelyn!" she hissed. "Where are you, you fool? We can't stay here."

It was then that Jocelyn stepped out of the shadows, walking slowly towards her. Hearing the sound of his footsteps, Claire turned around but raised her hands when she saw Site D's manager pointing a gun at her.

"Okay, honey. Put that gun down before you hurt yourself," she said as calmly as possible.

But Jocelyn didn't lower her weapon, continuing to give Claire a hateful look while grimacing at the sight of her gash. Instinctively, Claire began to back away.

"Run and I'll shoot you in the legs," Site D's manager threatened. "You don't want to be crippled even more, right?"

Claire stopped and sighed. They had better things to do than quarrel.

"You don't like me, alright. But why are you threatening me with a gun?" she asked.

Jocelyn gestured to the kennel door with her other hand.

"All that! It's all your fault!" she accused her, talking about the incident.

"What do you mean?"

"You orchestrated this attack with your friend from the Laden Mule. I mean, it makes sense. You want revenge on InGen. Sabotaging the operation is the best way to achieve that."

"As much as I hate InGen's board, neither Owen nor I sabotaged the operation! We don't care about you, we're here for the animals!" Claire retorted.

"And did you talk of the animals to your friend from the inn? I don't think so. Who is he? Who is he?!"

Who is he?

Jocelyn had put her finger on a problem. About their mysterious contact at the inn, Claire and Owen just knew his code name and that he worked for a Costa Rican organization which didn't trust InGen at all.

"We don't know exactly who he works for, but he…" the fallen park director began hesitantly.

"You don't know? Great!" Jocelyn exclaimed, rolling her eyes. "I thought you were cunning but actually, you're just morons!"

"The only topic of our conversations was the research Wu conducted here, before and after the Fall, in the house in the middle of the woods north of here," Claire explained. "Those about the Indoraptor."

"The Indoraptor…" Site D manager repeated dismissively. "What the hell is this shit? Another invention of your sick mind? I never heard of it."

"Liar! The house was indicated on your map!"

Jocelyn shook her head and sighed, lowering her weapon a little.

"I was kept out of this! Hoskins and Torres just told me to get this damn garage built, greet Wu and his team in secret, and shut my mouth about it. Nothing more! I never set foot in that house and I never knew what they did there exactly!" She confessed.

Claire nodded slightly.

"Alright, I believe you on that. But you're still one hell of a goose."

Jocelyn raised the gun and glared at her.

"And you're a traitor and a whore! Maybe you didn't help organize this…eco-terrorist attack, but you stuck your nose behind our backs nonetheless. You remain a nuisance to InGen. The board... The board will reward me for exposing a spy like you!"

Claire sneered.

"You really think you'll be rewarded after this mess? You see Jocelyn, InGen uses its employees like condoms. Once you're used, they throw you away! I'm not sure you'll keep your job for long. You should have left this drifting ship when you still could."

Completely in denial, Jocelyn shook her head sharply.

"I see you're trying to scare me. It won't work. Despite what happened today, we will assume control again, send the animals to California and sell them. InGen will be saved! It will survive this crisis, like it survived the incidents of Jurassic Park and San Diego…"

"You're forgetting Masrani's role..." Claire pointed out.

"Over time, public opinion will soften and then, we'll announce other projects, other parks," Jocelyn continued, ignoring her. "We will have learned from past mistakes in the meantime. Those parks will be built in safe places, away from hurricanes and volcanoes. Advances in genetic engineering will allow us to populate them with docile, controllable animals designed to please the guests and be safe for children, not bloodthirsty monsters which appeal to the fantasies of some nerd who wanted some thrill in her sad life! Those parks will thrive, more than Jurassic World… Your reign on Isla Nublar will be only a dark page in our history and the place you once coveted, that at the head of InGen's Destinations division, will be mine! I will climb the ladder, join the board of directors…"

Beyond Jocelyn, behind the glass wall which separated the hatchery from the insemination room, Claire had just seen a tall, dark, bipedal figure with tiny arms and a horned head, oriented in their direction.

"Jocelyn…" she whispered, trying to warn her that a carnotaur had probably spotted them.

"Shut up, Claire! I'm the one who give orders here!" Site D manager barked as she waved the gun. "Not you! I'll succeed where you crashed like a turd! We'll bring you to court! Bars are waiting for you! Maybe even the chair..."

"Carno…" Claire began before being interrupted by the sound of glass bursting.

The predator had just charged the wall, sending shards all around the breach. Startled, Jocelyn quickly turned around and froze when she saw it take a few steps in the hatchery. When he got to the edge of the lighted area, they saw the burns on his body and recognized Toro. While they and Franklin were busy with the Therizinosaurus and Asterion at the warehouse, he must also have entered the Ark, either through the door near the keepers' office or its bay window, or through the door on the southern side, near the entrance to the veterinary wing and that of the aquatic wing's upper level. They were Level 2's only two exits that could have been used by an adult carnotaur.

As drool dripped from Toro's parted jaws, Claire looked around for a way out. She saw one, on her left, an arch which opened onto a corridor, the one separating the laboratory from the upper level of the aquatic wing. Just as the fallen park director thought of taking it, Toro rushed forward. Claire didn't think and rushed towards her exit but Jocelyn remained on the spot, like a doe surprised by car lights. Shaking in terror, she raised the gun, aimed at the animal's head, and pulled the trigger. There was a click. She pressed again and there was another click. She looked at the gun with panicked eyes.

What the hell!

Then, as Toro lowered his head, she remembered one essential thing:

The safety! How do I take it off?

She never had the opportunity to find out because immediately after, the carnotaur rammed her with his skull. In the instant that followed, Jocelyn let out a gasp as she felt something long and sharp thrust itself inside her abdomen like a sword, tearing apart many of her muscles and internal organs. Just as she realized he had gored her, she was thrown upwards by the carnotaur's headbutt and landed hard on the cold, wet concrete several meters away.

Hidden behind the arch, Claire watched Toro approach Jocelyn with a slow but steady step. Of course, the burnt carnotaur had also seen her but he was only interested in Site D's manager, who was lying on her back ahead of him. Claire knew she could do nothing for Jocelyn and even hoped she had been killed instantly, but when Jocelyn's arms began to move feebly and her mouth spat blood, the fallen park director shuddered in horror. Jocelyn wanted to use her arms to straight up, but her body was in agony and she was too weak to do so, too weak to cry out. Her strength was failing her and her clothes were stained with blood and other bodily fluids. Reaching her, Toro pinned her to the ground, putting one of his feet on her torn abdomen. When he opened his mouth and lowered it towards the head of his dying prey, Claire immediately looked away trembling and fled. As she ran down the hallway, she heard the carnotaur's teeth ripping through flesh and crushing bone.

She soon crossed an intersection, where she continued straight, passing between the veterinary premises and the aquatic wing. She reached a service door, opened it and went outside without bothering to close it in her escape. After climbing down a ramp, she turned right and started running along the southern side of the Ark. As she approached the warehouse's entrance, she passed several parked vehicles and in one of them, an old grey Toyota, she saw a familiar curly hair.

Franklin?

She stopped, looked inside, and indeed saw the DPG IT technician, lying in the back seat in a recovery position. She was reassured that he had survived the warehouse's ordeal but wondered how he had gotten into that car before locking it. Then she remembered Benito's intentions towards them and knew that it had to be his car and that the young man must have taken the keys from his body.

She tried to open the door but realized it was locked. She then started banging on the window to get Franklin's attention.

"Franklin! Franklin! Open to me!"

He lifted his head, looked at her, and as she walked around the vehicle to the door by the driver seat, he took the keys from his pocket and unlocked the doors. She immediately entered to sit behind the wheel and turned to ask him to pass her the keys. She noticed that the IT technician's face was wet.

"Where is Mrs. Hodgson?" he asked in a low voice.

Claire shook her head.

"She didn't make it," she said laconically.

"Fuck…"

Seeing her put the keys in the ignition and start the vehicle, he worried.

"What are you doing?"

"We're getting out of here," she replied. "We'll pick up Owen and then we rush to the police station to warn them about all this mess."

"I got our cell phones back," he informed her.

"Good. Do you remember where they found Blue?"

"More or less…"

"Guide me there. You can do that?"

He nodded and she then gave him the opening code for her phone. But as he went to a mapping app, something quickly passed by the vehicles and turning her head, Claire saw it was Toro. She couldn't see whether or not he was holding Jocelyn's body in his mouth, but she noticed he was heading for the western gate. She had an idea.

"This is our chance…" she said. "Hang on."

Franklin buckled up and they pulled out of their parking spot, following the carnotaur. Glancing in the rear-view mirror, Claire saw armed men, probably in pursuit of Toro, running behind them. Seeing two guards posted in front of the open gate, the carnotaur roared at them to make them move away. Panicking at the sight of the charging dinosaur, they did, and under the bewildered gaze of the guards pursuing the animal, he crossed the gate and disappeared into the jungle. As the gate guards returned to their position, Claire sped up and the Toyota rolled through the gate, turning right.

"Wait, wasn't that Dearing behind the wheel of Benito's car?" One of the sentries asked.

"Uh I think so," replied his colleague.

One of their running colleagues, an officer, suddenly yelled at them:

"Goddammit! Not only did you let two carnotaurs escape the facility, but you also let Benito, that traitor, go?! You're fucking losers!"

"It wasn't Benito but Dearing…" one of the sentries pointed out in a weak voice.

The officer rolled his eyes.

"But that's even worse! She's also a traitor!" he exclaimed.

"Really...? What did she do?"

The officer did not answer and turned to his colleagues.

"Prepare some vehicles," he commanded. "We must chase her."

"That won't be necessary," Torres said suddenly.

They turned to the Security division's director, who had just been brought back to Site D by helicopter. They looked at him in surprise.

"But sir ... What if she warns the authorities?" One of the guards asked him.

"She won't."

He noted his subordinates' circumspection.

"She and Mr. Grady played a role in this sabotage, I'm certain," he told them. "She'll first fetch him and then they'll seek to leave the area. But they won't go far... Let's cross them off the passenger list. I'll inform the board and the Lockwood Foundation of their betrayal."

Torres pulled out his phone and when he was far enough from the guards, he put it away and pulled out another, a disposable device which could be bought in many shops around the country. With it, he dialled a Costa Rican number, that of some Jesse.

"Yes sir?" A young man's voice asked shortly after in Spanish.

"She's in an old gray Toyota. She's going to pick up her boyfriend. You got the green light. You have until sunset. Send me a picture of the bodies and let me know when it's done."

"Okay," Jesse replied before talking to his partner. "Mateo, we got it!"

Torres hung up, put that disposable phone back in his pocket, and pulled out his official phone to contact San Jose, Palo Alto, and Orick.
