The city of Manehattan was busy. Tons of people walking about on the sidewalk. On the streets were cars and other vehicles as they made noise while trying to get where they were going. Yet despite how busy the city was, there was a small shop within the place. The place was a boutique; inside was a girl in a small workroom. The girl had curved, medium indigo hair, a gradient of dark mulberry to moderate mulberry, and moderate azure on the shady side. She wore a light gray long-sleeve shirt, a black mini-skirt, and a sash that matched her hair color.
"Rarity?!" shouted a voice as a woman came in.
"Yes, Ms. Harshwhinny!" said the girl as she took off her sewing glasses and stood up.
"The reviews came from your latest design, and I have my opinion on it," said the woman as Rarity began to sweat. "It's absolutely... adequate."
"After working here for months and months, I knew I'd finally do something to catch your eye!" said Rarity as she sighed and let out a breath.
"Indeed, now then, I have an assignment for you," said Ms. Harshwhinny as she brushed aside what Rarity said. "A style scout from Canterlot City Fashion Week is visiting our shop in a couple of days. I need something fresh to show them. And I would like you to design something."
"Really?" gasped Rarity. "Thank you, Ms. Hemline! You will not regret this!"
"Oh, and Rarity? Don't mess up," said Ms. Harshwhinny as she exited the room.
"Thank you for the opportunity!" said Rarity as she sighed, "I thrive under pressure. One does not become a diamond without pressure." exclaimed the girl.
"IT'S TOO MUCH PRESSURE!" shouted Rarity as she was walking along the streets of Manehattan, stressed out.
Some nearby people saw and heard her and quickly decided to get out of the way.
"What in heavens will I do? I have tried everything!" shouted the fashionista.
She then continued to walk down the street as she arrived at a local dinner. The girl pushed through the revolving doors as she sat at a nearby booth. Suddenly a waitress zoomed into frame. She was a girl with puffy pink hair and wore a hostess outfit and rollerblades.
"Hey, Rarity? What can I get you?" said the girl.
The fashionista continued with her drama queen act as she flopped her face onto the table.
"Uh-oh. Mega stress. I need a Mountain Splash now!" shouted Pinkie as she zoomed away.
Within seconds, the party girl returned as she had a huge fountain of ice cream filled with sprinkles, hot fudge, and firework sparklers. Pinkie then plopped down the sweet treat on the table and quickly grabbed a spoon as she rushed over to Rarity to save her, hopefully.
"Maday, Maday, I'm going in!" shouted Pinkie as she took a scoop of the ice cream.
She lifted Rarity's head and shoved the cold treat into her mouth as mascara and tears ran down her cheek. The girl began to chew and munch on the ice cream as her sniffling ceased. Soon Rarity grabbed the spoon from Pinkie and began to eat more as she drowned her sorrows in ice cream.
"Whew, mission accomplished," said Pinkie as she wiped her forehead and sat in the booth seat across from Rarity. The girl reached into her hair, pulled out another spoon, and began eating the ice cream.
"Thank you, Pinkie," said Rarity as she downed another scoop of ice cream.
"No problem, Rarity. So, what's got you down in the tummy?" asked Pinkie.
"Ms. Harshwhinny has asked me to come up with a new design. Someone important from Canterlot City is going to visit in two days. And I've been tasked with designing a new outfit that will be put on display." said the fashionista. "I just don't know what I'm going to do. My muse has all but dried up."
"Aw, I'm sure you'll figure out something. Right, Slurpuff?" said Pinkie.
"Slurpuff."
A small, pudgy pink and white bipedal Pokémon resembled a cream puff. It had a chubby belly, a small red speck on its left side, and a red collar-like pattern around its neck. It had small red eyes, a tiny oval-shaped reddish nose, and a wide smiling mouth with a lolling tongue. When its mouth opened, two small sharp teeth could be seen. It had drooping pinkish fluffy hair and a red spherical appendage that resembled a cherry atop its head. Just below its chubby belly, two short pink three-toed feet protruded, and it had tiny white front paws with no visible digits.
The small Pokémon emerged from the kitchen with a plate of food on its head. The cream puff belonged to the party girl as it often helped her in her line of work. The Pokémon made its way to where Pinkie and Rarity were as it dropped the tray on the table.
"Good work, Slurpuff," said Pinkie as she patted her head.
"Slurpuff," said the Pokémon as she smiled.
"Anyways, don't worry, Rarity. I'm sure you'll figure something out. You always know how to make things look so good and amazing."
"Thanks for the confidence, Pinkie," said Rarity to her friend. The girl then pulled out her Pokéball and released her Pokémon.
"Delcatty."
The Pokémon inside had yellow and purple fur and a purple ruff-like collar with pin-like extensions. The feline-like Pokémon saw Slurpuff as it gave a smile. The two girls watched their Pokémon talking with each other as they smiled.
The next day, Rarity was in the boutique at her work desk. The girl was in the backroom working on a design for a dress. The door opened, and in came one of her coworkers. The girl had brilliant orange eyes. Her hair had brilliant vermilion with light amber and light tangelo stripes, with a gradient of moderate fuchsia to moderate orchid on the shady side. She wore a short black puffy-sleeved black mini dress with a golden saddle around the torso.
"Rarity, we just got another order placed," said the girl as she walked in and gave the fashionista the slip.
"Just add it to the pile, Sassy," said Rarity as she was busy drawing up some designs. The girl soon crumpled it up and tossed it away.
Sassy Saddles saw the floor littered with crumpled pieces of paper. She looked to the bin where Rarity told her to put the order as it was already a sizeable stack.
"Goodness, Rarity, when was the last time you took a break," asked the teen as she began to pick up the balls of papers.
"I'll take a break when I figure out what I'm going to present!" shouted Rarity to her coworker as she snapped.
Sassy jumped a few feet back as she saw the growl on the teen's face. Soon it softened as Rarity regained her senses and felt remorse.
"Oh, forgive, Sassy. I don't know what came over me. It's just... I'm stressed out. What with Ms. Harshwhinny asking me to come up with a new design; I just can't rest until I have the perfect outfit." said the girl as she took off her sewing glasses and rubbed her eyes.
"I see. Why don't you take five, and I'll clean up?" said the girl as she didn't like that her coworker and friend were getting wrinkles and gray hair from all the pressure she was under.
"I appreciate you wanting to help, Sassy. But I need to focus."
"Rarity, please, look at your hair!" said the girl as she presented a mirror to the girl. Rarity now saw that her entire hair was in curls, and strands were popping out from her lack of sleep and caring for it. "If you won't do it for me, at least do it for your hair."
"I... I suppose I could get some quick beauty rest," said Rarity as she let out a yawn.
"Don't worry, I'll clean up the mess," said Sassy as she led Rarity toward one of the couches; the girl lay down and immediately felt her eyes close.
Sassy was glad that she didn't need to convince her friend to rest against her will. She then turned as she began to clean Rarity's workstation and do some of the orders that had piled up. The boutique was closed for the day, so they didn't have to worry about running the store.
While Rarity was hoping to get a few minutes of sleep, the girl was more tired than expected as she fell into a deep slumber. As she was sleeping, the girl remembered a past memory from her childhood.
(Memory)
A school play rehearsal was shown onstage, where kids acted out their parts. Off to the side was a young Rarity and her teacher. The young girl had been assigned the wardrobe designer based on some past experiences with the girl showing off her own handmade clothes that she wore to class.
"Well done, Rarity. Your costumes are very nice," said the teacher.
"Nice?!" exclaimed a young Rarity, "They need to be spectacular! And the performance is tomorrow!"
Later that same day, Rarity was in her bedroom as she was working on some new designs for costumes. Yet, no matter how hard she tried, they didn't come out right, at least in her mind. Eventually, Rarity turned off her sewing machine and banged her head against her desk as if trying to get it to work. The banging was loud enough that it got the attention of her folks, who peeked into the room. They saw their daughter as they approached her.
"Rarity, sweetie, what's with all the noise?" asked her father.
"Maybe I'm not meant to be a fashionista after all!" said the girl as she got up and flopped facefirst onto her bed.
"Why would you say that, dear?" asked her mother.
"Cause I can't come up with any ideas to make my costumes perfect!" said Rarity as she was still facefirst into her pillow, making her voice muffled.
Rarity's father walked to where his daughter was; he sat down on her bed and patted her back.
"It's okay, sweetie. So what if your designs aren't what you expect? The important thing is that you put your heart into it."
"But dad, they need to be perfect!" emphasized Rarity as she lifted her head.
"Who says?" asked her father. "Everybody, or just you?"
"I..." Rarity didn't answer as she began to think.
"Sweetie, not everything is perfect. That's what makes things so unique. We know that you pride yourself on making clothes that stand out. But do you ever think that the reason they stand out is not that they're perfect, but that you made them with passion." said Rarity's mother.
"Huh?" said the young girl as she didn't understand what her parents said.
"Listen, my princess. If you pride yourself on making things perfect, you'll miss out on what's truly important. While we commend you on wanting things to be perfect, unfortunately, there's no such thing. Take it from your parents. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That means the only one who can see things for what they truly are, is you." said Rarity's mother.
"Do you understand what we're trying to say?" said Rarity's father.
"I... think so," said the girl.
"Basically, as long as you consider something beautiful, it doesn't matter what others think. Your opinion is the only one that you can truly trust."
Following that talk, Rarity spent the whole night and the next day working on the outfits. They might not have been the most elaborate designs she had ever made, but to her, they were the most beautiful outfits. And it was because she was listening to her heart. Soon the night of the play came, and the show went smoothly. The audiences weren't only amazed by the show and the outfits Rarity made. During the ending, Rarity's teacher called her out to join the others on stage as the adults gave the small girl warm applause.
Rarity's dream of becoming a fashion designer burned ever brighter. And as she got older, she began to do all she could to not only become a fashionista but also try to build her own fashion empire.
(End of Memory)
Rarity yawned as she opened her eyes. The girl blinked as her field of vision started to form. The teen sat up as she stretched. At that moment, Sassy came in as she returned from putting some fabrics away.
"Rarity, glad to see you're up," said Sassy.
"How long was I asleep?" asked the girl.
"About five hours. Seems you were more exhausted than you expected. By the way, I handled some of the orders while you were resting."
"I appreciate that, Sassy. And thank you for looking after me."
"It was no problem at all. So, ready to leave?" said Sassy.
"Actually... I think I'm going to stay," said the fashionista as she got up and made her way to her sewing machine.
"Rarity..."
"Don't worry, Sassy. I already know what I want to present to Ms. Harshwhinny. I could use some help if you're willing to give me a hand."
"Of course," said the girl as she began to listen to Rarity's idea.
The pair worked well into the night, planning out every detail of Rarity's design and making adjustments as they went. One thing was for sure, it may not be the most glamorous thing she decided, but to Rarity, it was more than enough. Cause it came from her heart. Eventually, the pair finished the outfit as the crack of dawn came upon Manehattan.
It was noon when the entire boutique was filled with people. They were chatting among themselves as Ms. Harshwhinny talked with the style scout who came to check out what the place had to offer. He lowered his shades when Rarity and Sassy came on the main stage as they had a cover. The girl cleared her voice as she got the attention of everyone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," said Rarity to the crowd, "I am designer and couturier Rarity. On behalf of myself and my coworker Sassy Saddles, I'd like to welcome you to Carousel Boutique. And I'm thrilled you are here to see the latest piece in fashion. So without further ado..."
Rarity signaled Sassy to take off the sheet, and the girl did just that. The cover was pulled off, and the outfit that both girls had worked on stood. It was a blue celestial style dress with a beaded and layered skirt in various shades of blue. It also had teal-colored wings along the back of it.
"I call it 'The Princess Dress,'" said Rarity as everybody oohed and aahed at it.
Soon huge applause came over the boutique as they loved what was presented. Rarity looked over to where her boss was as she was talking with the fashion scout. He said something into her ear as Ms. Harshwhinny's demeanor changed to a smile and a thumbs-up. The teen sighed as even Sassy gave her friend a thumbs-up.
After getting people's orders for the dress, the boutique was about to close down for the day. Sassy and Rarity were putting away the mannequins and coat racks when Ms. Harshwhinny spotted them.
"Very good work, Rarity," said the woman.
"Why, thank you, Ms. Harshwhinny, though I couldn't have done it without some help," stated the girl as she looked at Sassy.
"Indeed, well, thanks to your combined efforts, we've received plenty of orders to complete. However, that brings me to my next statement. As it turns out, one of the orders was to be delivered to a city called Cloudsdale. It's rather up north from here." said Ms. Harshwhinny.
"I see, but why are you telling me this?" asked Rarity.
"Cause I need you to deliver the dress there. As it turns out, the Manehattan post office doesn't deliver that far. Therefore for them to get their request, I'll need you to run an errand."
"Me?" said Rarity as she was stunned to hear the news. "But what about the boutique?"
"Do not fret, Ms. Sassy, and I will handle things here while you're gone. You need to make sure that the package is delivered to the client. Understood?" said the woman.
"I understand, Ms. Harshwhinny. Isn't it dangerous to travel that far by myself?" asked the fashionista.
"Do not fret; I've hired someone who will serve as your guide. You will meet with him in the morning," said the woman as she left.
That night, Rarity informed her family that she would be away for a while to deliver a package. The girl then began to pack a small backpack as she figured she'd need some basic necessities, as it would be quite a way until she reached her destination, even with her guide. Morning came as Rarity made her way to the boutique with her backpack slung over her shoulders.
"Ah, you're here," said Ms. Harshwhinny as she gave the teen the small package to which she put it in her backpack. "And your guide should be here any second."
As if on cue, the doorbell rang as in walked Rarity's guide. The person was a boy who was roughly her age. His features consisted of silver hair, blue eyes, and a scar over his left eye, so one could deduce something must have happened. His attire consisted mostly of black. Black jeans, a black jacket with the Pokémon league symbol on the back, a grey shirt, a black cap, and shoes for traveling.
"This Carousel Boutique, correct?" said the boy.
"Indeed. Rarity, meet your guide. His name is Silverbolt. I met him not too long ago when I was on a business trip." said the woman.
"Hello, darling. I'm Rarity or Ms. Rarity, whichever you may call me," said Rarity as she extended her hand out.
"Nice to meet you, Rarity," said the boy as he grabbed Rarity's hand, but instead of kissing it as she thought, he simply shook it firmly. "Name's Silverbolt, but you can call me Bolt. I'll be your guide/travel partner to Cloudsdale. And might I just say, you're very gorgeous."
"I'm flattered, darling," said the girl. "So you have experience with where we're going?"
"Yeah, it's where I was born and spent most of my childhood," said Silverbolt.
"Huh, I see. Well, then, I hope you have everything ready," said the girl to her new companion.
"Yup, got our supplies, sleeping arrangements, and even my Pokémon," said Silverbolt as he showed off a few Pokéballs on his belt.
"Ah, you're a trainer, I assume," said the girl.
"More or less," responded Silverbolt as he didn't reveal too much to the girl. "Anyways, we'd best leave. The journey is quite far as is."
"Right," nodded Rarity as she said goodbye to Ms. Harshwhinny and Sassy; she hoped she wouldn't be gone for too long as she and Silverbolt exited the boutique.
The pair stepped through the doors when a voice called out to them.
"Rarity!"
The two teens looked down the street as rushing toward them was none other than Pinkie Pie and Slurpuff. The pair was running as the girl had her backpack in her hands.
"Pinkie, what are you doing?" asked Rarity.
"Duh, I'm here to say goodbye," said Pinkie as she cried and pulled the fashionista into a hug. "AlsothatI'mcomingwithyou."
"Wait, what?!" shouted the girl as she had to pull herself from the party girl's strong grip.
"Duh. When I heard you were going on an adventure, I knew I had to come with you."
"Pinkie, I am not going on an adventure! I'm merely delivering a package to a customer. Also... how did you know that I was leaving? I didn't tell you." said the girl as she found it weird that Pinkie knew where she was going.
"Oh, Rarity, you silly thing. Of course, you did," the girl bluntly stated.
"No, I didn't," said the fashionista.
"Yes, you did. Here," said Pinkie as she pulled out a party invitation, "It says here that you'll be going on an adventure and that you're sad that you can't take me. So I talked to my boss, and he allowed me to join you. Now you don't have to worry about not taking me."
"I did no such thing!" shouted Rarity as she knew Pinkie was faking all of this as an excuse to go with her. She facepalmed herself when she realized Silverbolt was still standing next to her. "Forgive me, Bolt. But it seems Pinkie here is dead-set on joining me. I do hope this doesn't cause any problems."
"Ehh, I'm fine with her tagging along. The more, the merrier," said the boy.
"See, he gets it!" said Pinkie as she zoomed into Silverbolt's personal space and began to rub his hair. "It's like we have the same mind."
"Okay, can you back off, please?" said Silverbolt, as he didn't like the girl invading his personal space. He somehow managed to escape Pinkie's superhuman strength as he took a few moments to catch his breath.
Once Silverbolt got air back in his lungs, the trio soon stopped by a convenience store to buy any last-minute supplies. They soon exited the city as they headed into the nearby forest, and the journey to Cloudsdale was about to begin.
