"The Collective Trials of a Quinnventor… and Logan"
Chapter 22 - The Make-Up Date (Part Two)
(Quinn's Perspective)
So, it should come as no surprise that last night's date was nice, the part that got to be a date. But sadly that wasn't very long. Because not only did Zoey and James show up on their own date and get seated right beside us. But Lola and Michael crashed it too. EVEN COCO crashed it, on a date too! Do we really need any more evidence to prove that I am cursed?
No, I'm not making it up. Everyone who could have been there was, and we ended up working double time trying to hide everything.
So my conclusion is that dating isn't for me… Nope, not yet. What other assumption is there to have?
Shame on me really, for not seeing it sooner.
As long as he's trying to date me, Logan seems jinxed. But I know that's all because of me, I'm really the one who is cursed. He wouldn't be having any of this trouble dating anyone else. And while I love him, and I know that… he probably doesn't feel the same. Especially after he sees how completely unlucky I am and realizes it's all my fault.
But here's the dilemma I'm facing now. Logan can't see it that way.
For some reason, he won't see it the way I do. He doesn't think either of us is even the slightest bit unlucky. He just wants to fix it, all of it, apparently.
I wrote all of this right after that almost date happened then I went to sleep... and since writing it. Logan has just proven every word of it even more true.
He admits it was unfortunate, but not for the same reasons as me.
Even the date that got ruined for Zoey and James. He came to our dorm room door late last night, and our homeroom this morning working out a plan. Going out of his way to let them (Lola and Michael) know what we'd all ruined, and that we ALL needed to fix it. I'd never seen him more worried about someone else's date before. Especially when the wronged person was Zoey, usually he was always calling her a drama queen and scoffing when she complained.
He was even personally cooking some of the food we were going to use for their Make-up date. I had honestly forgotten he could do that. Lola, Michael and I were all cooking different things too. But he just really seemed to be on a mission…
I had a feeling there was more to this mission than what I was seeing. But I really didn't even consider that he would be planning more than one make-up date. It's probably the last thing I would have suspected. That turned out to be the part of his plan he even kept from me. Until the moment we were left in that kitchen alone. We both had cleanup to do. I was working on getting congealed cheese off of my cooking instruments (Yes, I do my best cooking with beakers… who's surprised?) Blast that mac and cheese I just had to make. But I hoped it would be enjoyed and worth almost destroying my beakers.
Burnt cheese like this should be weaponized! There's an idea!
While I was cleaning and scrubbing away, Lola and Michael were off to find Zoey for their part of the apologies. They had hardly left before Logan put has arms around me trapping me by my workstation. I really hadn't been expecting that at all. I turned my head to look at him, but he stole a kiss the moment I looked his way.
I pulled away to warn him, "Logan! Are you even sure they're gone?"
"Yeah! They're gone, relax," he told me but I still turned and stood on the tips of my tippy toes to look for myself. I did just catch a glimpse of their backs before they disappeared. But when my balance faltered I lightly pressed against Logan's chest to regain my equilibrium. I think I even told him, that he was right. But when I was sure we really were alone, and I looked up at his face. We locked eyes and I stole a few more kisses from him before I even knew what I was doing. I hugged him tightly for a second before I told him. "We really should be more careful. Anyone could look in here and we know Coco is coming."
But he let out a big breath and said firmly, "We can't let that much time pass between moments like these anymore. That was way too long."
"It was." I agreed, "Not that we had any choice with all of the planning this needed. I think it's very sweet what you're doing."
"Good," He smiled, "I was hoping it would impress you."
When I tried to step around him to keep working, he only stepped with me and asked. "Where are you going?"
I reminded him, "We only have so much time before Everything will be ready. This will have to wait till then."
He told me, "It can't wait anymore, can you FINALLY let me say I'm so sorry about last night?"
"You don't have anything to be sorry about, you couldn't help it." I shrugged. "Maybe it all really was jinxed from the start-"
"No! I'm not gonna believe that and I'm not gonna let you believe it either." He told me before I saw him glance at the door and turn back to his own station he'd been cleaning. He quickly blurted out. "We'll talk after we get Zoey and James all set. Okay?"
"Yeah, okay! Just a sec." I said, checking all of my instruments for any more infernal sticky cheese residue. When they were all clean to my satisfaction, I took off my protective gear and placed it in the box with my glassware and other tools I'd brought. While Logan finished up cleaning the grill he and Michael had been using. Coco said around the ravioli she was chewing "COME ON! I gotta get back to my tube before my favorite show starts! It's Friday Night People! Some of us have lives outside this place."
I told her, "We're ready! We're just cleaning up. I'll be right back to get these things when it's over." But then Coco pulled a familiar-looking paperback book out of her back pocket and told me. "You left this in the lounge again. Be more careful."
I really didn't even remember doing it, but it was definitely mine. This book had a few truly unique markers I'd created stuck in it's pages. So I'd made certain they were still there. Not only because it had been found in the lounge but also I know how possible it is to get lost after Coco touched it. So I thanked Coco and ended up carrying one of the plates. Logan was already carrying the other plate. When we got to the volleyball court. A table and chairs were already set up and James was pacing. More than a little nervous… poor guy. After last night, I totally can't blame him.
All of us could tell that Zoey was steamed last night… probably still was today. She'd been a little quiet. But I doubt she's been all that quiet towards James… my heart did go out to him.
James thanked us both and Logan told him that Michael and Lola were getting Zoey now. James locked eyes with me and asked, "Do you think she'll come?"
I assured him, "Oh yeah! Lola and Michael will get her here."
But his sleeves were all twisted looking and his tie was tied off strangely. So I helped him straighten out the jacket and lose the tie tucking it away in his pocket. He asked me, "Are you sure I look okay?"
I told him, "You look great! But look! This is important!"
I showed him how we had everything else he could possibly need tucked away under the tablecloth. There were more drinks, an ice bucket, Lola's casserole, and My Mac 'n Cheese that I had made were all there (Michael and Lola had placed them there).
James smiled at Logan and complimented, "Wow! You guys really thought of everything."
"We tried." Logan did manage to shrug.
Then Coco came rushing past us warning. "Here they come! Hide!"
I wished James luck and ran to the side outta sight. Logan hot on my heels, asked me, "So... is that you're plan for the rest of the night? Paperback plans?"
I teased, "Other plans might prove dangerous." Thankfully it wasn't too soon to laugh about.
Then he said it, the thing he had been really planning this entire time.
"No, you really can't believe I would go to this much trouble making things up for them and not do anything to make it up to you." Logan finally hinted at his REAL scheme.
I tried to reason, "There's nothing to make up for, it wasn't anyone's fault it just happened. I was there, I saw it for myself." I even tried to laugh that off.
But Logan shot me a look and said. "Just Please, come with me right after this. I promise we will be alone this time for sure... Please?"
He'd said please twice! So even though I really wanted to stand my ground. Before I stepped out to let Zoey know we were a part of this ploy too. I did tell Logan, "Okay."
But I had no idea that he would mean that there was a car waiting for us on the edge of campus just like yesterday. I was worried about my equipment. But Logan assured me, "I already took care of it, your box will be safely taken to your dorm. Just come with me."
"It's not being handled by Coco is it?" I asked walking backward because I was really trying to sneak past him. But he wasn't having it.
He assured me, "Of course not, just follow me."
So I let him lead me to the same place we'd met the day before and open the door for me. When we were in the car and it was heading to wherever Logan wanted to take me. He asked me, "By the way, what was that that you made for Brooks and Garrett?"
I laughed, "Mac and Cheese. You couldn't tell?"
"No, you looked like you were gonna cure cancer over there. I had no idea what you were making." It was his turn to tease.
But I was used to it, "I just know I can control the heat and everything way better in that setting. It's made my mom nervous since I started using my Cheesy Bake Oven to do more than bake."
He smiled, "I can't imagine why she'd be worried." But he said it with so much sarcasm. I bumped his arm.
Then I asked, "Are you really not even going to give me a hint of where we're going?"
"Nope," He confirmed. "Just sit back and enjoy the trip off of campus. Though I will tell you this much." He clued me in, "This trip will be longer than our last ride."
"We'll that doesn't really narrow it down, does it?" I asked him.
He admitted, "No, which is why I told you that much. But don't worry, I took care of everything and this time it will really be just us."
I had to admit, that did sound really nice, after the free-for-all our last attempt had been. I took a deep breath, he put an arm around me and we both tried to relax.
Trying to think of something I could say to him, I realized Coco had handed me more than just the book I've been reading. I checked for the third time since she'd handed it back to me. Just to make sure the two hidden things inside of it's pages were still there.
I plucked one of the markers I'd used to mark my favorite parts out and asked him, "Recognize this?"
He took the flattened and pressed flower that had been preserved perfectly from my hand. It was a yellow tulip from the bunch my friends had given me as an apology during the bot wars with the sci-club.
At first he said, "No…" then he said. "Wait a minute," and smiled, as he realized, "Is this one of those Tulips we gave you to say we were sorry? After you beat the sci-club nerds with that mini-bot?"
"Mmm-hmm." I validated. Then I asked, "Did you technically do that too?"
He looked a little sheepish admitting, "Well, that had been more my fault than anyone else's. I owed you."
I knew it. I thought he'd been the main one behind that too. He admitted, "Brooks and Martinez both said they were your favorite."
"They are." I nodded.
Logan went on turning it over in his hand, saying. "But it looks great for being so old, how did you do that?" He'd asked. So I gave him a quick rundown of the very simple process. I had done it again the other day so it was all fresh in my mind. It could last forever now… and knowing me it probably would be something I always kept.
He handed it back to me and said, "Leave it to you to find a way to make at least one live forever. That's really cool."
I admitted, "I saved a few from that bunch, I use them to typically mark favorite parts of the story and such." I explained slipping it back where it belonged and flipping to my newest similar creation. "I made this one the other day."
Of course, it was the rose he'd given me, and the middle was still noticeably black. I couldn't do anything about that. But this way the little bit of life it clung to would live on. Logan even complained, "But that one was barely alive, you've gotta let me give you a better one."
I said, "No! I want to keep it! Even if you get me another, I want this one too."
"It's all black though." He kept reaching, I wouldn't let him have it.
I insisted, "It's still red, a little."
He tried to take it from my hand and I ended up trying to hold it out of his reach. But he pulled me closer reaching as far as he could trying to get it. This game of keep-away carried on until the car took a turn a little fast and we were thrown together against the seat pressed together close. We'd both gotten so used to always looking to make sure that we were alone. We did it even though we were perfectly alone in the back of this vehicle and the divider was up between us and the driver.
When we both caught the other looking around, we both laughed before he pulled me into a kiss that shouldn't be allowed. It was way too persuasive and not fair at all. We could take our time, we didn't have anything pulling us apart this time. No one was coming to interrupt or possibly poke fun. In fact, as the car took another turn there was a force pushing us together. It was like the universe even knew we'd needed it.
I could still feel how he held me so tight with one hand while the other was STILL trying to pluck my blackened rose from my fingers. But I wouldn't give it up, no matter how good of a kisser he was. When we both had to come up for air, he sighed in defeat, claiming. "Okay, you win. But I still gotta get you one that isn't so black."
I gave him an Eskimo kiss and corrected, "I think we both won on that one."
"Yeah," he had to agree (and his voice did that softer thing that messes with my heart rate.). "I didn't even have to look over my shoulder but I still did."
"Me too." We both laughed and cuddled close.
I wanted to relax, but I felt like I couldn't. And his shoulders and back felt so tense under my hands just hugging him. He must be having the hardest time completely unwinding too.
I realized he couldn't see things the way I saw them when I said. "Will you let me apologize to you?"
"For what?" He asked, and he seemed to realize how harsh that had come out. He amended, "What did you do?"
"I caused all of this trouble for you." I pointed out.
"No, you didn't," He was quick to tell me. He even repeated, "No, you didn't. If I don't get to wear any of the blame, you can't either. Tonight, won't be the same story… okay? It'll be much better. Just wait and see."
"You seem really confident about that." I had to admire even if I could detect a bit of nervousness here or there from him too. Not as crippling as James, but under the surface, for sure. Logan is just way better about keeping his true feelings hidden.
I think right after that is when the car stopped, and we were dropped off at apparently the middle of nowhere. Just a chainlink fence with a locked up tight gate. Even you would have asked, "Where exactly are we?"
Logan chuckled and explained, "Remember how years ago I said my Dad had bought up our beach we share with our friends? So he could film there whenever he needed to? And we can go there whenever we want?"
"Uhh, yeah… I remember you saying something like that." I said as he walked around to the trunk of the car and it popped open the moment he was there. He opened it still explaining, "Well… Dad sorta collects properties like that and hangs on to them as a hobby. In his business, it pays off too, because even if he let's other people film here, he can make money from letting them use it."
I still had no idea where he was going with this, but he went on. And I tried to listen, "When he's not filming in these places, or lending them out to friends. They just sit here and stay private for the most part. The only way you can use them is if you have access. Like we do."
Then he handed me a boom box and asked, "Do you mind carrying that?"
"No, are you sure you've got the rest?" I asked as he carried two things and the driver was unlocking all of the locks and security systems on the gate.
He said, "I've got this, follow me." Then he walked through a gate and a long winding path. That twisted and turned between towering dunes of sand for a long way. He even explained the fences had to surround part of the place at a distance far enough to hide from the cameras but also to keep intruders out. But usually, the only ones who ever try to stir up trouble in places like this are drunk college kids looking for a good time.
I asked comically, "That's not the plan tonight though, right?"
"Nope, just follow me a little further, we're almost there."
True to his word, we only walked a little further before we reached the end of the long dune valley and arrived at the beach part of the place.
At first glance I would almost think Logan had chosen to take me back to the beach we'd accidentally discovered on a field trip gone wrong years ago. Our group goes back there a few times each year since. But this wasn't the same patch of beach we'd all gotten to know so well. This shoreline curved differently, had a beautiful pier off to the left not too far off in the distance. A lighthouse sitting out among a dangerous-looking bunch of craggy black rocks as black as Onyx. But it was probably a full-sized lighthouse when you were closer to it. I asked, "Was the lighthouse theirs too?"
He said, "Yep, Dad featured it in two of his films too. We'll go there, sometime, if you want. It's pretty cool."
It was beautiful absolutely beautiful, and just before sunset… so it was only going to get better from here. He asked, "What d'ya think?"
"Color me impressed," I admitted and he smiled, but then I realized the things he was carrying was a picnic basket so swanky I didn't even realize that was what it was. and a big picnic blanket rolled up was tucked under his arm. I was carrying a battery-powered boom box, and I was trying not to completely geek out. This was so… even now, I'm completely without words. It's too sweet! And we really were alone, as the driver hadn't come in he'd locked the gate behind us and stayed out with his car.
I summed up, "So our first real date, is a picnic on the beach?"
He added, "At sunset. We're just a little early yet."
"It looks like we're just in time." I had to hand it to him. This was good.
He spread out the thick-looking blanket he'd brought as he explained, "And we can be out here as long as you like, we just need to get back before curfew. I thought maybe if we're still here after sunset. I could build us a fire and we could look at the stars. I bet the views a little better here than in most of our hiding spots."
"For sure," I agreed, "we'll have to come here again on a clear night with my telescope. If the lighthouse isn't too bright-"
"If it is I can have it shut off while we're here." Logan was already assuring me. "It's cool to be in a place we own and can control like that. We could even build here if we wanted to."
I had to admit, he really had thought everything through. Before I asked about the only drawback to this outdoor date. "Aren't you a little concerned about some of those clouds?" They looked dark and heavy. Like it could rain, and the waves were looking a little rough and choppy like it could rain maybe even storm.
He pulled me close and said, "Put it to the back of your mind. And tell me what do think? Is this better than the crowd control we couldn't get last night?"
"Logan," I shook my head. "This is without a doubt the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me… I don't even know what to say, except... Thank you." He'd really made the words seem so small.
I kissed him hoping all of the things I couldn't say were sent to him that way. Not only did the smile he was wearing afterward make my smile widen. But I felt his back and shoulders slacken with relief under my hands. Which immediately put me at ease too, and after last night's catastrophe. I finally felt like I could relax.
When he let me go, he went back to setting everything up. He turned on the boom box and let it be background music, but it wasn't too loud. It was just floaty along with the waves and breeze. He really does still have so many moves I haven't even seen yet. Doesn't he?
I tried to help him, but he was completely focused on making every little thing perfect. It wasn't till he handed me a plate that I realized. "You cooked this yourself didn't you?"
"Yep!" He said proudly before admitting. "It was another reason I had no idea what you were making. I was way worried you would notice it or smell it when you were working a few yards away. But thankfully you were too laser focused and I got to surprise you. But next time, I do want some of what you cooked, it smelled really good."
I promised, "Well, next time give me a heads up and I'll contribute too. Not that you need my help, everything is wonderful."
He liked the sound of that and said, "Deal. Now eat up the sky's just starting to get pretty."
"Pretty? You call that pretty?" I asked when the sun had just turned orange then bright red and the bits of sky not shrouded in heavy blue clouds were a more popping pink by the second. I corrected, "It's GORGEOUS! Can't tear your eyes away from it gorgeous."
But Logan corrected me, unimpressed, "It's alright."
"Al-right?" I repeated. "It's Awesome!"
"I thought it was you who was always pointing out sunsets in our group." He said as he was looking down at the plate on his lap.
"It just always amazes me how such colors can happen like that naturally in our atmosphere. It's like science is painting this great picture just before everything gets dark." I tried to explain. But Logan was saying the end of the sentence with me and taking my hand, interlacing our fingers and kissing my fingers before he tugged me closer.
"You forget I am sitting next to you. And I'm having trouble looking anywhere else… at the moment… but I knew you loved sunsets… especially the ones that go pink like this." He said as we both put our plates aside and I put my arms around his waist. While resting my head on his shoulder. He sighed and kissed the top of my head. Before he said, "Why can't more meals be eaten like this? It's so much better than holding hands and hiding it."
I shrugged and said, "We've got, right now."
"Yeah, but we've really got to be more careful than ever with Vince always seeing too much." He reminded me. And he wasn't wrong, but I didn't expect him to say. "Since our trip that seems to just be getting harder and harder."
"You think?" I asked, glancing up at his face to see if I could gauge how serious he was being.
And he surprised me, (like he'd been doing all day) with perfect seriousness. "I keep hoping it'll get easier and better… but it keeps just getting worse and more complicated."
"I know," I had to agree, And put in hopefully. "It's not enough to make you want to-"
"No! I don't want to stop, but I just wish we didn't have to hide so much. And our friends wouldn't be so awful about it. But you know they will be and it just SUCKS. Like I knew if I didn't get some time alone with you like this I was gonna lose my MIND." He vented.
I had to confess, "Me too, I love dancing with you every day… but it sucks that we only get to do the one dance and we have to be so careful because EVERYONE watches us so hard whenever we do that."
"Yeah, tell me about it." He agreed. Before I could virtually see the lightbulb turning on over his shoulder. When an idea lit up his face and he said. "Hey, but like you said. We don't have to be so careful now."
Before I even knew what was happening he'd twisted out of my grasp and was pulling me up on my feet. I had to marvel as the music was cranked louder I was being pulled out to the flattest-looking spot near us. And I had to say, "After the week we just had, I'm amazed you still want to dance."
He said, "Maybe not the G-rated, safety-netted one we've had to do all week."
I hardly got out around a laugh, "You're calling the dance that set the whole upper-class and faculty aflame, tame?"
"Well, yeah! None of them saw the earlier versions we had to water down." He reminded me.
"Were they really so different?" I asked again. Honestly trying to remember.
He flirted, "Let me refresh your memory."
"Okay, on the upside, I can breathe and move better tonight then I could that last night, up north." I joked.
Logan said, "So we can swing dance?"
"You know how?" I should just stop being surprised anymore.
"Yeah. What? You can't?" He asked. Before he said, "It's easy as long as you trust your partner and after all of the dips we've done this week I think you trust me enough for a lift or two."
"A lift?" I repeated a little nervously.
"Sure, I don't mean an over-the-head, Patrick Swayze, 'Nobody-puts-Baby-in-a-corner,' 'Dirty Dancing' kind of lift. I don't think even Vince could do that. The easier ones though, there's nothing to it." He still shrugged like it was the easiest thing in the world.
So I asked, "Can you show me?"
"Sure, but when a different song plays this one has just the right beat for the dance we have to do every day. Let's get that one out of our systems first. Besides we can both do this in our sleep." He said stepping away to bow at me (but it was playful tonight).
I curtsied back (just as hammy) and said, "What would our roommates say then?"
"They'd probably STILL ask us to do it again," Logan said so darkly, I laughed as he pulled me close as he dared. Showing me all he had been holding back all week. And this is exactly why I have to appreciate that Logan is a passionate person. I couldn't tell you how many times we performed the same dance all week and he hadn't given me a sixteenth of that passion in class. I know he COULDN'T then but out there on the sand, I didn't even feel like my feet touched the ground.
Nearly on every dip, he would sneak a kiss. Claiming, "I have been wanting to do that ALL week!"
When we did the finishing dip the kiss that followed stretched on for at least the length of the following song. Maybe he wasn't the only one who had been storing some things up all week. I hope I left him with that impression.
The sky was starting to noticeably darken by the time we stopped, so we worked together to build a fire. And then class was in session for swing dancing. Logan taught me that swing was all about three things "kicks, flicks and tricks." And he showed me a bunch of basics but told me the name of each thing he taught me. Promising me it would all make sense in a minute.
After finding a song that had the right kind of fast pacing and beat. He came back and when he said the name we both knew what to do. It was so much fun and so fast! And goofy! I wasn't exactly great at it, but I still had a blast and Logan promised we could practice it more together between here and prom. So that by the time Prom was here, I would be able to possibly dance that way if I was asked. If it was covered in gym class, maybe we could do more than just the one dance together too.
I can't remember the last time I laughed that much or that hard. But by the time we were finished, our bare feet (we'd both kicked off our flipflops) were both so caked in sand, we had to both stand on the shoreline and let it wash some of the sand away.
When we got back to our campfire and blanket, Logan whipped out a towel from thin air to dry his feet. Then he even helped me towel off my wet feet while I was standing next to him as he crouched. I had to hold onto him so I wouldn't fall over as he got me to switch feet. Even put my flip-flops back on me while I was still holding on. I complimented, "James was right, you really did think of everything."
He shrugged, "Nuh. I was just lucky."
When he stood back up, the lighthouse came on and started shining it's searchlights. Lighting up the whole shoreline pretty brightly. The wind was whipping pretty good as I asked him, "So what's the plan now, do we head back or did you have something else planned?"
"Well," He stood back up and stepped back into his own footwear. "If you want to head back we can, but I was thinking we could star gaze a little… maybe."
"If there are any stars peeking out around these clouds, you mean? Sure, I don't mind staying a little longer." I agreed. It has been so nice not having to look over our shoulders the whole time. But before we could do anything like that. We both got hit with a few really big raindrops, we both looked up just in time for it to downpour on us both. Putting out the campfire almost immediately.
We'd both been too wrapped up in our little haven here to notice how much worse the waves had gotten. Even when we were standing on the edge of it. So we both quickly grabbed everything and made a run for it. The lights from the lighthouse showed us the way, thankfully. But all of the running in the world couldn't prevent the both of us from being completely drenched by the time we got back to the car. We didn't even worry about putting the stuff in the trunk we just jump in still holding everything.
I was out of breath, SO saturated and COLD when we were inside the dark air-conditioned car's back seat.
Logan was apologizing and explaining that the weather report on his phone hadn't warned him about the rain till just now. When we clearly already know about it, and he sounded panicked and freaked beside me. But you know what my reaction was.
I couldn't stop laughing!
He was so freaked out, I'd never heard him so panicked. And it made me worry about some of the other dates that he had been on. When he seemed to go quiet and said, "Wait a minute? Are you crying or laughing?"
I answered him, "I'm laughing! You look so cute and you're so worried! You can't help it if it rains! Or that I'm completely jinxed. I don't even need a mirror to know I look hilarious! Because I can feel it!"
"You look beautiful…" He corrected me helping push some of my hair aside. When we locked eyes in the dark cold place. He repeated, "So Beautiful…but I've never dated a girl who got this wet on a date and didn't cry her eyes out," Logan revealed.
"You knew I wasn't average when you met me." I reminded him. "That's number one, number two, my hometown is Seattle. Where it rains more than anywhere else in the U.S. And lastly, you really shouldn't date such wicked witches. And only one of them could hate water that much."
Still worried he asked, "So you liked this date okay? It wasn't ruined for you? Even though we're this wet?"
"Ruined? No!" I repeated, "Logan this was the best date I've ever been on."
"Really?" He asked, still not sure. "You're not just saying that to make me feel better?"
"No! It really was!" I said all excitedly and kissed him just to show him how much I appreciated it. And broke it off to say again, "Thanks for everything."
He teased, "You're worried about the kinds of girls I was dating and I'm more worried about the other dates you've been on."
I smacked at him playfully, before he grabbed me up into another kiss. But he clearly wasn't finished and wasn't letting this dark and private place go to waste. We made out for most of the ride home. Before I knew it we weren't far from PCA's campus and we were STILL kissing. So I tried to break it off and say his name, but I only got the "Lo-" out before he was pulling me back in.
I had to pull away again. "Logan! What are we gonna tell our roommates when we get back? We can't have the same story. What are you telling James and Michael."
"To mind their business." He said trapping me against the back of the seat too well for me to escape right away.
"No really!" I laughed, as he went down my neck. "Wh-What are you saying? Because we can't give the same story." I finally got out and he rested his head on my shoulder, while I rested my head against his and kissed the nape of his neck. Before I gave the same attention to the side of his neck that was facing me.
"Are you seriously gonna ask me to think with that going on?" He asked sounding bothered, but in the best way.
I laughed, "I never said I would make it easy for you."
"Nope! You never have." He laughed back before he said. "I don't know I'll just say I was on a date that got rained out. They'll buy that and it is the truth, but what are you gonna say to the two Nancy Drews you live with? They'll check around if you say you were on a date at the same time as me."
He wasn't wrong either, so I came up with my story on the fly. "Oww, I'll tell them I was working on the sprinkler systems again. They'll buy that, I had to work on them last year around this time. Making certain they're all up to code before the summer break and dangerous brush fire seasons start."
"That does sound like something Dean Rivers would get you to do." Logan had to agree.
And that was all he needed to continue with what he'd started. We made out till the car stopped right at the edge of campus and it wasn't raining here yet. So we were both walking back to our dorms looking like drowned rats for no apparent reason. But I was still in the afterglow of the rest of the night and I couldn't stop smiling. From what I could see, Logan was having the same trouble. The whole time we were still in each other's sight. When we had to go separate ways I waved and he waved back. But there was a pause where we both wished we could have done more.
But Logan was right, we had to be even more careful. Now that people have started noticing things more often. So I bolted for my dorm and since it was so close to the curfew cut off. Both Lola and Zoey were there to gawk at me and ask, "What happened to you?"
Like I told Logan I said. "I was working on some of the sprinkler systems in the school. You know, just checking them out, making sure they're up to code."
"Well, it looks like they work just fine." Lola said with her nose all wrinkled.
Zoey put a spare beach towel around me that she'd just washed saying. "My guess is you need a shower."
"I do! Be right back." I said grabbing my shower bag with all my things in it and a change of clothes for bed. A DA checked me off as I walked past her. So I was in the clear for being here safely for curfew but as I was getting ready to step into a shower stall and I was emptying my pockets. I noticed I had a text message. I didn't get to read it till I was in bed and settling into sleep. But when I realized it was from my boyfriend… and it was his true goodnight to me. I was glad I had waited, because it was almost like he was there with me holding on to me when fell asleep after that.
I didn't expect it at all. But his first text read: "You don't know how hard it was letting you go tonight and not giving you one last goodnight kiss."
Text 2, "If we had been alone and there weren't so many damn people rushing around us."
Text 3, "I wouldn't have hesitated, and you probably would have been a lot closer to being late."
Text 4, "I would have been late for sure and it would have been worth it. Every minute of it. You're worth it."
Text 5, "So just know that the little wave I sent you. Wasn't the way I wanted to send you off."
Text 6! "And the next time we slip away like that for a date, expect a much better goodnight from me."
Then the last text read simply, "Sweet dreams, baby."
He practically wrote me a book! For Logan, that was a book!
So I had to write him back but I had no clue how I could give back to him the warmth and happiness he'd just wrapped around me. So I just did the best I could and texted back.
My first text read "Thank you, baby! You really are the best."
Second text, "I didn't want the night to end that way either. Everyone was rushing back trying to beat the clock."
Third, "So just know that when I was waving to you, all pathetic. In my mind, I was kissing you goodnight."
Fourth, "And if I could have really done that, there's no way you would still be struggling to sleep or getting comfortable right now."
Five, "Because you would still feel my arms around you and you'd still feel that kiss long after it ended."
Six! "So just prepare for that kind of ending from now on."
Then I said, "Goodnight to you too, my baby! And thanks again for the best night ever."
Then I went to sleep.
But I will say that when we all met up for breakfast that following Saturday morning. I got two surprises.
The first one was the hug that James gave me, when I came in sight and when I locked eyes with Zoey she explained, "He ate almost all of that macaroni you made."
When James pulled back he said, "It was better than my mom's AND my grandma's!"
I laughed, "Glad you enjoyed it. That just made my day."
It turns out Logan was right behind me, when Zoey asked Logan, "How was he?"
He shot me a grin and said, "Slept like a baby. For the first time since we got back."
Then James and Michael start teasing him that he'd slept more like a rock. And of course, he started fighting with them and the moment hopefully went unnoticed. But I didn't want to forget it so part of my Saturday morning was writing all of this down. I hope I don't forget any of it.
That's all for this chapter!
But don't fret lovely readers! I will be back next Thursday and the next chapter will be covering the Coffee Cart Ban episode! And it will be picking up from Logan's Perspective. It's already getting interesting, and can't wait to share it. And hopefully I'll manage to get more than one chapter finished next time.
I want to give a little thank you to whoever is responsible for the Daughtry song "As You Are." Because I was listening to it on loop for the romantic dancing on the beach in this chapter. Just Gorgeous! And it just reminded me (and my sis) of them too much! And Little Richard's "Tutti Fruity" was a big help for me envisioning them swing dancing together.
Thank you to anyone who's read this far! You're all the absolute best! Please review if you can. Your feedback is so appreciated. And as always, hope you're having a great day! Take Care and Much Love!
