Adam felt like he'd been waiting hours for Kim when she finally walked into his room.
"For a second I thought you were going to stay the whole night with her."
"Jealous of your own six year old niece, detective?"
"A little. I feel like I didn't get enough attention." He joked. "Did she go down ok?"
"She did. She asked me to read her a story, that's what took us so long. Adam, she's amazing. She's such a strong and bright kid. She told me she's happy she gets to call me aunt." Her eyes got a little watery.
"Of course she is. She loves the living hell out of you. Sometimes I'm also jealous of that." He joked again and they both laughed.
"You don't have to, because you're the apple of our eyes and we both love the living hell out of you. I know she does because she tells me that every day and I definitely know I love you. And you are right, I didn't give you enough attention today."
"Maybe we can fix that right now." He raised his eyebrows and looked at Kim seductively.
"Now? Gracie is right there."
"She's sleeping. We can lock the door and be really really quiet and then we get dressed quickly just in case she wakes up in the middle of the night and comes here." Kim laughed at his master plan but couldn't really blame him, she really wanted to be with him too. "Just come here, I miss you." He pleaded, padding the space next to him on the mattress.
"Wait one second." She went to grab some things and placed them on the night table. "When would you think would be a good time to read that card you gave me?"
"Hmmm, when I'm not next to you."
"Are you shy about what you wrote?" Kim was having so much fun right now. "Just like Grace was?"
"I'm not shy, you already know what's written there. It's just… I don't know." He shrugged and Kim was surprised to see his cheeks blushing.
"I love you." She said out of nowhere, making him smile. "Can I open the other envelope you left for me?"
"What other envelope?" He sounded confused.
"The white one." His face didn't change despite her explanation. "The one that was left in my mailbox."
"I didn't leave you anything, I didn't even go to your place."
"Adam you can quit it now, you really did surprise me."
"Babe, I'm not playing. I swear."
She was beginning to get nervous now, because if it wasn't Adam, she had no clue who could have left it there for her. She yanked it out of her bag and showed it to him. "Should I open it?" He sat straight up in his bed and looked at her, he could tell she was getting a bit nervous now.
"Yes. Let's see what this is about."
———
As Kim began to tear the top part of the envelope she could feel her curiosity and nerves increase a little. The paper in it was big and the writing on it wasn't that long, but it definitely belonged to an adult and it seemed as if it had been faxed. Who uses a fax machine nowadays anyway?
The theory that maybe one of her kids wanted to surprise her evaporated quickly; although she was aware that it was a crazy theory to begin with.
'Happy birthday Kim!
We know we shouldn't be doing this, Adam is probably going to kill us but we promise we were super careful.
We just wanted to thank you for everything you're doing for our family and for our little girl, she's our whole world and what makes this whole situation just a little better is knowing that she's surrounded by people who love her and take good care of her.
We just want you to know that we're extremely grateful and we want you to enjoy and celebrate properly. We took care of everything, you just have fun.
Lots of love.'
Enclosed was a voucher for a weekend in a resort. Kim looked at Adam and couldn't believe what was happening.
"Is this real?" She asked.
"Typical Kit and Anne move." He stopped for a second as he took the letter in his hands. "I am gonna kill them." He inspected the envelope carefully. "They probably got Travis to agree to this, so everything should be ok." He took a deep breath and ran his hand through his face.
"Are you mad?"
"No. No, I'm not. I just wish things were different, that's all." He took a deep breath and kissed her lips looking for something to ground him. "But I agree with them, you totally deserve that."
"You do too, and you are coming with me."
"I have to see if I can get the days and ask pops if he can take Grace." He was frustrated and overwhelmed, it was clear to anyone who was paying attention. She leant in closer to him and lightly rubbed his back.
"We'll take her with us. It could be her end of first grade trip." He chuckled lightly because he appreciated what she was doing for him.
"It's really nice of you to say that. I just want to be alone with you and forget about all this."
"Then we'll do just that." She placed her head on his shoulder. "This will all be solved soon, I know. You're working your ass off to do it and I know you will."
"I wish I was as good as you think I am."
"You are. You are the best there is."
"We wouldn't be in this situation in the first place if I was."
"Baby, you did the best you could then and right now you're giving your all to make things better for Grace, to protect her and take care of her." She was looking at him with kind eyes, feeling the pain and guilt he was feeling. "Just like you did with me. And I refuse to think things won't work out when someone puts so much love and dedication into it." He dropped his head defeated. "For what it's worth, I intend to hold your hand and walk right next to you every step of the way." He looked at her through the corner of his eye getting a little nudge from her.
"You know I love you, right?"
"Mm hmm." She nodded timidly.
"Do you have any idea how much?" He was lost in her eyes and didn't even give her a chance to answer. "Because it's an awful lot. It's so so much, I'm not afraid to tell you that I love you like I never loved anyone before." Kim opened her mouth to speak but he didn't want anything to jeopardize this moment that was so important to him. "You don't have to tell me anything, you don't have to tell me you feel the same. I'm just saying this because it's true and because I want you to know it." He grabbed her neck and kissed her fiercely. "Let's go to bed. It was a long day."
Kim decided she wasn't going to saying anything, at least not right now, but she did wanted him to let him know that she loved him too.
"Um, I know I agreed to sleeping here."
"But?" Adam was a bit frustrated, he didn't want to think of the possibility of her going back home tonight.
"But I brought nothing to sleep in." He looked at her and smiled when she answered his brief question and pulled out one of his old CPD t-shirts that he had tucked under what would be her pillow.
"Does this work?"
"It does." She yanked the t-shirt out of his hand and slowly got off the bed. "I'm going to get changed then." She turned on the lamp that was right next to the bed and walked over to turn off the light switch on the wall creating some dim atmosphere that was perfect for what she wanted. She took a few more steps closer to the door and just when Adam thought she was going to turn the knob to go get changed in the bathroom, she locked the door, never looking at him and giving him her back.
She began to take off her shirt, letting her clothes fall carelessly on the floor. Even though she wasn't looking at him, a part of her knew that she had all his attention. She unbuttoned her jeans and slowly pulled them down her legs, moving her hips swiftly helping the pants fall down and also teasing her boyfriend as she slowly revealed her burgundy lace thong.
She unclasped the latch of her bra leaving her bare and smooth back completely exposed to him. As she bent down just enough to get the t-shirt he'd given her, she smiled to herself when she realized she got the reaction she was looking for.
"Don't even bother putting that on." He stood behind her and spoke softly right next to her ear and his hands were firmly placed on her hips pulling her flush to his body.
"Why? I like it." She giggled, placing her hands on top of his and playing with his fingers.
"Me too, but I like the alternative much better." Her hands guided his to her breasts, she placed them there letting him cup them as his thumbs gently caressed the sensitive skin. He was lost in that contact and she took that moment to pull down her underwear. "Do you want to kill me tonight, or what?"
"No. I just want you." She turned around in his arms and slid her hands under his t-shirt which he instantly took as a cue that he needed to take that off right now. They both smiled at each other and Kim didn't lose any time when she started to tug on his boxers to peel them off his body. She was in control right now and he just let her do whatever she wanted with him. She placed both her hands in his chest and began to walk back to the bed pushing him towards it until they finally fell on it.
She grabbed his hands and placed them on the sides of his head while her fingers delicately traced the skin of his arms. Her head dipped down to find his lips, the kiss was soft and slow and oh so very teasing. When his hands went to find her back, she quickly grabbed them and crossed them behind his head. Her lips traced his jawline and started their descent to his neck, she enjoyed every second of it, and judging by the goosebumps on his skin he was too. She took her sweet time to kiss him, to have her lips memorize his body. She traveled down his chest and used her tongue to play a little with his niples trying to give back a little of all the pleasure he'd given her in the past. She continued her trip south kissing his navel and his hip bones, so slowly that Adam felt his skin was about to burst. At this point his body's reaction to the gentle touches and kisses was impossible to hide and she loved that.
When he felt her fingers softly wrapping him, he thought he was about to explode, especially when her hand started to move up and down. He started to moan and she tried to silence him with a kiss. As soon as their lips lost contact she looked at him in the eye and threw her left leg over his hip finally straddling him and letting him slip inside her.
She closed her eyes and bit her bottom lip as she handled the whole situation. Adam was enjoying the moment and the look of pure pleasure on his girl's face. It was quiet, but it was one hell of a wild ride.
Adam kissed the top of her head and climbed off the bed to fetch their clothes and unlock the door. Not that he had any problem with sleeping naked with her right next to him, but they did have to contemplate that this was a new scenario.
"I feel kind of bad." He confessed handing her the t-shirt and putting his boxers on.
"Why?" She asked, a bit worried.
"Because it's your birthday and here I am getting the special treatment." He was in bed back with her and couldn't help but kiss her lips when he heard her chuckle.
"The way I see it, the birthday girl got to play with her favorite gift. So you shouldn't feel bad, on the contrary you should be fucking proud of yourself, that was something."
"Oh, so I'm just a toy for you?" He pretended to get offended, getting a soft punch on his chest in return.
"I said gift, not toy." He chuckled lightly and pressed her to his chest, action which she totally gave in to.
"I was thinking." He changed the subject completely.
"About?"
"I think we unlocked the next level of our relationship."
Kim lifted her head up and looked at him. "I can't wait to hear how this one ends. What level is that?"
"Silent sex with child in the house." Kim bursted into laughter when she heard him.
"It was fun though." She added.
"It was. But I did miss you screaming my name."
"Well, if we manage to get that weekend to ourselves I'm planning on screaming your name more than once."
"I'm gonna have to pull some strings then."
"You do that detective." She kissed his lips before slowly turning her head away and yawning.
"Let's rest. Tomorrow a new adventure awaits you."
Kim looked at him with a furrowed brow. "Weekend mornings Gracie is going to take all the energy you have."
"Is she worse than her uncle?"
"I'm afraid so."
The night went by with no interruptions, they weren't expecting any because Gracie wasn't a restless sleeper, she would go down deep and have her batteries fully charged by the morning.
Adam woke up to a ticklish sensation on his arm due to Kim gently brushing her finger against it.
"Good morning." His voice was raspy and full of sleep. "What time is it?"
"Eight thirty."
"Did you sleep good? Why are you up?" He asked, a bit worried.
"I slept great." She scooted over to him and nuzzled his neck. "My phone was buzzing and it woke me up."
"Why didn't you wake me?"
"Because you looked too cute to wake you up."
"Cute, huh? Gracie says I look like a walrus when I'm sleeping." Kim laughed at the comparison.
"In that case you're the most adorable walrus I've seen." They both laughed as he pulled her closer to him.
"So, why the early phone buzzing? Everything ok?"
"Oh, yeah. It was just my mom. Apparently you made a good impression. How was that experience? We didn't talk about that." She asked smiling, she knew how difficult her parents could get.
"Nerve wracking. I have no clue what I was thinking about when I decided to invite them and Susan and George for the first time ever." He stopped for a second while he rubbed her arm. "Actually I do know. I thought about how happy that would make you."
"It did make me happy. For the record, Susan and George loved you. They made that clear several times."
"Really?"
"Mm - hmm."
"They're really nice. Your parents too."
"Nice to know they behaved. They can get a little protective sometimes."
"I can understand that. It's impossible not wanting to do that."
"Detective, can you stop being so damn perfect?"
"I'm far from perfect, darlin'."
"You are perfect for me."
"Then we're perfect for each other." He kissed the top of her head and spoke again. "I'm gonna go make something to eat. You stay here and enjoy your Saturday."
"I have an idea." She offered, making him stop to listen. "How about I get breakfast ready and you go wake up Gracie? And maybe later we can go to the park or the aquarium or something?"
"Let me get this straight. You want to spend your day off, when you can do anything you want doing a family plan with the Ruzeks?"
"Yes, that's what I want." He smiled at her answer. "Unless you want me to leave and let you spend the day alone with Grace, which is a completely valid option."
"No way." He licked his lio absentmindedly and dipped his head to find her lips. "I'm going to wake up Grace. She's going to be thrilled."
"Are chocolate chip pancakes alright?"
"Her favorite."
"I know." She shrugged with a smile.
"And what was that you told me once about spoiling her?" They both laughed and he left the room.
"Rise and shine little Miss Ruzek." He spoke softly as he opened the window shutters letting the sun illuminate the place.
"Good morning ." She said yawning. "I want to sleep a little more."
"Even if I tell you we're having chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast?" Her little eyes opened wide as if he had just said magic words and she jumped out of bed like a spring.
"Can I eat in my pjs?"
"Yes, you can." She jumped up and down making her messy hair bounce off her shoulders.
"Wait." She stopped abruptly. "Is aunt Kim still here? She said she would." He smiled to his insides when he heard his niece calling Kim her aunt. It was too adorable not to be moved by that.
"Aunt Kim, huh?" He teased the little girl tickling her side and making Gracie blush. "Aunt Kim is here, yes. In fact she's the one who's making you pancakes as we speak." Grace didn't even give him time to say anything else and sprinted out of her room and into the kitchen.
"Good morning!" Kim jumped at the high pitch screech and the abrupt hug to her legs that she was not expecting.
"Good morning sweetheart! She waited for Gracie to loosen her grip and she lowered herself to hug the six year old.
"You're here!"
"Of course. I told you I would be. Are you hungry? Because I'm making a whole lot of pancakes."
"And syrup? And bacon?"
"Yes to both." Adam's voice appeared in the kitchen. "But now little Ruzek, march to the bathroom and brush your teeth."
"Ok." She whined but did as she was told.
Kim and Adam got everything read while Gracie finished her morning routine. All three of them had breakfast together, the girl was ecstatic and she didn't even know they were planning on going out with her later.
"This is yummy!"
"I'm happy you like it." Kim answered.
"You know what I also like? Puppies." Both adults laughed.
"You're not getting a puppy Grace." Adam answered firmly.
"Why? You don't like them?"
"I love them, but we can't get one right now." He said and Gracie immediately looked at Kim.
"Oh no, don't look at me. We have Buggs." She shrugged, but the bunny didn't convince the girl.
"Buggs belongs to everyone. I want someone to play with." She sipped her cup of chocolate milk leaving a brown mustache on her upper lip. Making the whole situation even more adorable. "If I can't have a puppy, can I have a baby cousin?"
Kim choked on her coffee almost spitting it out of her mouth, Adam just looked at her and chuckled. "Heather told me she has a baby cousin and that she plays with him all the time."
"I don't think so, muffin. Not right now anyway." He added and looked at Kim who was red as a strawberry.
"Fine. I'll wait." She answered disappointed and shifted her focus to her food.
Once she finished and went to get changed, both grown ups were alone in the kitchen tidying everything up.
"We're going to the aquarium. Maybe she'll get hyped enough and will settle for a goldfish." He said laughing.
