He woke up without that heaviness on his chest that had been with him for so long. Starting the day with a smile and with a warm and happy heart was another thing that he terribly missed. Adam was an upbeat, positive, happy guy and that all evaporated after the accident.
The effect Kim had on him was quite scary sometimes, because it was clear to him that she had his heart in her hands and that life without her wasn't life at all.
He slowly shifted in bed, padding the mattress with his hand and trying to find her sleeping body next to him, but he freaked out when he realized that he was alone.
He sat up quickly, almost like a spring, and rubbed his eyes with the back of his hands adjusting his sight to the bright rays of sun that crept in through the window.
As he looked around the room, there were no signs of her.
"Shit, no. This can't be happening again." He said under his breath, remembering the first time they were together that she had run off. That happiness he woke up with, was now tinted with panic. What if she had changed her mind?
He got out of bed in search of her, his concern was so high, he didn't even think about putting his pants on.
"Kim?" He didn't have the patience to look for her in silence, he needed to know if she was there and most of all, if she was ok.
"Morning sleepy head." Her relaxed and sweet voice came from the kitchen where, by the sounds and smells, she was probably making something to have for breakfast.
Adam took a deep breath and closed his eyes in relief. "You're here."
"Of course. Where would I be?" She turned off the stove and turned to see him, sporting a huge smile on her face. "I'm not doing that again. I learned my lesson." Adam took a few steps towards her, with a goofy look on his face that was making him come across as a child in love.
"So, you remember that?" She nodded to his question and snuggled right into his chest when his arms wrapped her into a hug and his lips left a tender kiss on the top of her head.
"Mm hmm. You know, last night." She trailed off a bit, finding the right words to express her feelings. "It was wonderful."
"It was."
"It was even better than what I had imagined." Kim pulled her head back looking for his eyes. "It helped me remember."
"It did?" She nodded again, giving him a sense of pride. "Well, if it helped you get some memories back, you can count on me to do that again anytime you want." His comment earned him a slap on his chest and hearing the beautiful sound of Kim's laughter. It was incredible how something so small could have such a great impact. "Although, next time if you want to stay with me in bed and cuddle a little bit, I'm down for that." He laughed nervously. "Waking up without you sucks."
"I was hungry, and I tried to wake you up but you didn't even flinch. I didn't keep trying because, honestly, you looked too cute, so I came to get some food ready."
"I guess I haven't really rested in a while."
"I'm sorry I put you through that. If it counts for anything, I intend to make up for it."
"You don't need to apologize. If anything this was all on me, it's my fault you had to live through this hell, so I'm the one who's sorry for everything. I never meant for you to pay any of the consequences of my decisions or my family's crap."
He unpacked all his anguish and guilt, but even apologizing to her didn't seemed enough for him. It was going to take some time for him to cope with his guilt.
"Hey. It wasn't on you either, ok?" She grabbed his face with both hands and crashed her lips to his, the torn look on his face was tearing her heart. They would have to deal with this at some point, but not now. "Why don't we concentrate on the good right now? Figure this out later?"
Adam nodded and kissed her again. "Good. Can you get the Orange juice from the fridge? I'll start taking everything else to the table."
"Sure." He moved comfortably around her place as he was being observed by her who was trying really hard to contain all the happiness in her body. "Have you always kept this here? Or after you started to remember?" He asked when he saw the picture Gracie had made for her when she was in the hospital.
"That's been up there since I moved back to my place. It's adorable. I will confess, though, that after seeing Grace I've been trying to figure out who is who." She said laughing as she was moving the food to the coffee table. She wanted this morning's breakfast to be more informal, she wanted to snuggle next to Adam on the couch and have a very domestic morning to make up for the time they had lost.
"Well then, in that case let me enlighten you." He pulled the paper off the fridge and walked over to her with the juice, the picture and a couple of plates that were left on the counter. "This is her." He started once he left everything on the table and found a place next to her on the couch.
"I figured that much." He laughed at the rolling of her eyes.
"Ok, ok. This is my dad. Do you remember him?"
"A little."
"Ok, good." He said, celebrating any little achievement.
"There are Anne and my brother Kit. You never met them."
"Actually, I met Anne when I saw Grace."
"That's right. My bad." He went back to the picture and pointed to two other people. "That's us."
"We're looking good! My hair, especially." She joked at the way Gracie chose to style it. "And who's that?" She pointed at the little figure next to them.
"That would be Gracie's baby cousin."
Kim jerked out of her leaning position against him and looked at him with worry in her eyes.
"Wait. Do we? Was I?" She took her right hand to her stomach and was too scared to actually finish any one of this questions and Adam was quick to notice that, taking her hand away from her belly and holding it in his.
"No, we don't and you were not pregnant either." Kim sighed in relief. Not that she didn't like the idea of having a family with him, but forgetting or losing a child was something that she didn't even want to contemplate. It wasn't necessary for her to explain any of that to him, he knew exactly where her reaction was coming from. "According to our niece, that's our family portrait of the future."
"Oh, wow." She smiled and kissed him. "That's a future I can work with." The butterflies in her stomach were already going crazy, but when he called Gracie their niece, the flapping of their wings caused a hurricane inside her. "Adam."
"What?"
"I want to see her."
"Who? Our little fortune teller?"
Kim chuckled and nodded. "Yes. Do you think that would be ok?"
"Are you kidding me? She will be ecstatic to see you."
"And her parents? I mean they don't know me."
"Kit and Anne know you more than you think. Gracie's been drilling their heads with a bunch of stories and I've told them my share as well. They went to visit you a couple of times at the hospital, too."
"Really?"
"Yes. Dad was there too, he's always asking about you." As he spoke, he was able to notice how distraught she was feeling. "It's a lot to take in, I'm sorry."
"No, no. I mean yes it is, but I like knowing. Being in the dark about everything sucked and now that this is settled," She smiled pointing between the two of them. "I enjoy you telling me the bits and pieces that are still missing in my head." She focused on the picture again, only to avoid looking him in the eye. "To be honest, it scares me not to get all my memories back."
"You'll remember."
"You don't know that."
"I didn't know if you were going to remember at all, but I chose to believe you would, and here we are." She sighed, still stressed about that issue. "And if you don't, then we make new ones. We have so much ahead of us and all the time in the world to do it."
"Thank you, for being so patient with me."
"Honey, I would do anything for you."
"Me too."
"I know, you did already." He reached to kiss her softly. "About seeing Grace. I'm supposed to have dinner with them tonight, do you want to come with me?" Kim didn't speak, instead she sought comfort in his tight embrace. "If you feel like it's too much, we can think of something else."
"I think I'm ready for that."
"Yeah?"
"Mm hmm."
"Ok, I'll text Kit and let him know. They'll love to have you over and I'll be right there holding your hand."
She finally looked up and left a small kiss on his chin.
"I love you, Adam."
"I love you too."
The rest of the morning was pure fluff. They had breakfast together in the living room, where they stayed cuddling on the couch, enjoying the peace and calmness that they brought to each other.
As it was getting late, he knew he had to go get ready for dinner, but he didn't want to leave Kim's side.
"So, I can't go to my brother's house wearing last night's clothes?"
"No, you can't." She said giggling.
"I don't wanna leave."
"We'll see each other again in like two hours, don't be a drama queen."
"That was cold Burgess, you're killing me!"
"Shut up." She playfully slapped his chest. "The faster we get ready, the faster you'll be here to pick me up."
"Ok, you might have a point there." Kim closed her eyes and smiled proudly at his comment.
"See? Quick question, you're staying with me tonight, right?" She asked hoping he'd say yes.
"Yes, if you want me to."
"I do."
"Great." The sparkle in his eyes was impossible to dim. "I'm gonna get going, because I don't want to keep Gracie waiting for too long, otherwise I would still be on that couch with you."
She walked towards him as he moved closer to the door, the blush on her cheeks was wrecking the little self control Adam had left. "I'll text you when I'm ready so you can tell me when to pick you up."
"Ok." Her hand on his shoulders gave her the support she needed to stand on the tips of her toes and kiss him one more time. "Hurry up."
"You don't have to tell me that twice."
He had never gotten ready that fast before. The joy running through his veins was giving him that boost of energy he'd lacked during the past weeks. He decided to give Kim a little extra time, more than anything not to seem too desperate, and texted Kev and Jay to let them know why he had disappeared. Both colleagues had tried to reach him, but being submerged in the state of bliss in which he was didn't allow him to reply.
Some time later he was parked in front of her building again. Too anxious to wait in his truck, he got out and waited for her leaning on the hood of his car, his heart about to pop out of his chest when he saw her walk through the threshold.
The knee length light summer dress was a perfect match to the blue carding she was wearing. Her hair was loose with soft waves and she had put on some mascara and eyeliner to bring out the glittering in her eyes.
"Wow." He gasped, making her smile and turn around in front of him, giving him a full glimpse of her look. "You look amazing darling."
"You look pretty good yourself." The denim shirt he had on was doing a great job highlighting his biceps apart from matching with her own attire.
"Are you ready?" His question came after a sweet peck of lips.
She sighed before answering.
"I am."
"Ok, then." He walked around the care to open the door for her. "Let's go."
"Thanks, what a gentleman." He smiled and reached for another kiss once she was sitting down.
"Forgive my lack of self control."
"Oh please, you are welcome to lack your self control any time." She added playfully as she wiggled her eyebrows.
It didn't take much for them to feel comfortable around each other again. Their chemistry was undeniable and the ease, safety, peace and love between them just blossomed every time they were together. It happened even when she didn't remember, and now that she knew he was hers, letting herself go and enjoy the feeling of being together was natural and something she truly needed.
"Ha! Be careful what you wish for." He winked, making her blush. He was enjoying the subtle flirting.
On the way to his brother's he talked, making sure she was really ready for this. He wasn't going to put her on the spot if she didn't want to, and part of him was afraid that maybe she had agreed to this dinner because of his own enthusiasm.
"Kit and Anne are nice people. I spoke with them already and they are aware of everything, so they'll keep it nice and easy."
"Ok."
"Gracie doesn't know anything about you coming, so if you change your mind it's ok. We can reschedule or whatever."
"Adam?" She turned in her seat to look at him better, even if his eyes were fixed on the road ahead. "I know you're worried about me, and I know how much you care about how I'm feeling, but you need to relax. I'm alright and I promise I will tell you if at any given moment that changes, ok? I trust you. I know I can tell you anything, I know you'll be there for me no matter what. So let's take a deep breath together and let's do this."
"Ok." He answered happily. "Ok, let's do it."
