Chapter 42: Shōgatsu

Even though there was a looming threat, everyone was in a spirited mood. Shōgatsu was at midnight, and everyone was looking forward to it.

Even Naruto had to admit he could definitely use the distraction. His nightmares and memories of Suna's battle continued to plague him, keeping him from a proper night's rest.

Dark bags were still clearly visible underneath his eyes and people were starting to worry. Which only added to his frustrations.

Watching how the instructors were giving training to their students down at the academy training grounds was certainly a way to pass time. The Hokage had ordered the teachers to evaluate individual prospects to see whether any of them could graduate early. Normally this wouldn't even be considered. Not even during past shinobi wars. 'Desperate times call for desperate measures.'

He slid from the rooftop he was sitting on and landed gracefully. Him bumping into Iruka made it less so. "Umino."

Blinking, he was slightly taken aback by Naruto's landing. "Naruto! What are you doing here?"

"Passing through."

Smiling, Iruka tried guiding Naruto towards the entrance of the academy grounds. "Glad you're here. I've wanted to talk to you for a while now."

Naruto disagreed wholeheartedly and firmly planted the heels of his feet into the ground, refusing to budge. "I got other things I need to do."

"It will be five minutes! It will be good! My students can meet a Hunter!"

Naruto still wouldn't budge. "I remember visiting last time. Wasn't a success."

Iruka held up his hand in protest. "I disagree! That class graduated and is doing exceedingly well as genin!"

With a sigh he let himself get dragged across the training ground. A few genin were staring as they passed.

"Isn't that?"

"That's a Hunter!"

"Not just any, that's Naruto Uzumaki!

"You mean-"

The two stepped inside and they walked down the familiar hallway. "I expected you'd get bored of this."

Iruka shook his head. "The brats can get on my nerves, but I can't imagine myself doing anything else."

Various teachers craned their necks as they walked past. They all were familiar with Naruto. Most of them were teachers back when he was still in the academy. They hadn't treated the blonde well.

Naruto locked his lone eye on one of the teachers who was leaning talking with his colleague. "Glad to see Konoha learned from my departure."

Iruka hesitated. Asiko had been one of the teachers that had made Naruto's childhood a living hell. "Unfortunately, not."

Asiko turned to meet them, seizing up Naruto's imposing figure. "Iruka-san. Naruto-san. What brought you to the academy?"

"His idea," He nudged to Iruka. "I see you're still working here."

Asiko smiled, showing his yellow teeth. "Of course. Iruka here knows how invaluable I am!"

"You have years of experience. Not many shinobi can say the same. Never thought of making the step to Jonin?" Naruto asked, feigning interest.

"Well, I have considered it. I'm fairly sure I would be capable." Asiko smirked, his eyes darting to Iruka.

"Asiko here also performed various missions for the village in the past." Iruka grunted, clearly annoyed by Asiko's boasting.

"Interesting. I'll make sure to pass the message along then."

Asiko looked surprised. "You would?"

Naruto nodded, He turned and continued walking, with Iruka quickly catching up. "Definitely. We can use more people on the wall and not hiding behind their desk job."

Asiko paled and stuttered. "That's n-not what I had in mind."

"No, but I did. Here's to hoping you're the first one to fall." Naruto couldn't suppress the sneer that started creeping onto his face.

They didn't hear the man's response as Iruka led them through the classroom door and shut it behind him. "That was pretty cruel."

"He deserves nothing less," Naruto looked into the empty class before narrowing his eye. "You lured me in here."

"We need to talk, Naruto. When you 'left'…It broke my heart."

"It broke your heart? What did you think happened to me?" Naruto's tone became cold and harsh.

"What Lady Hokage did…Its unforgivable. But it's been a long time. I just want to reconnect with an old student."

"Why?"

"Because you were important to me." Iruka countered.

"Not important enough! You didn't do anything when they ordered my termination as a shinobi. Besides, when did you ever help?"

"When you stole a scroll, and half the village was hunting you down!" Iruka raised his voice as well. He wasn't going to let Naruto roll over him completely.

"Are you seriously going to use that as your argument?"

"I saved your life!"

Naruto closed his eye as he forced his anger down. "Good for you, Umino. You saved the life of a neglected and abandoned 12-year-old boy. Where were you for his previous four years?"

Iruka fell silent. He never expected that kind of question. One that struck hard though. "The previous four…"

"Exactly. Where were you when people like Asiko were harassing me? Purposefully causing me to fail my tests and exams. You may have been better than most, but honestly, that doesn't mean much here in Konoha. Only thing you ever did, was pretend I didn't get beat up on a weekly basis, or have my apartment trashed every other week."

"I never thought of it like that." Iruka nearly whispered, his head filled with regret. He had rehearsed this conversation repeatedly. He was sure that he could at the very least make sure that there wasn't any bad blood between them. How wrong he had been.

Naruto sat down on one of the tables, his hands resting in his lap. "Everyone here wants to make amends for what they did wrong. Yet, almost no one got it right the first time."

"But acknowledging that we did wrong-"

Naruto interrupted him. "Doesn't make it right, nor does it earn my forgiveness. But I'll tell you now. Nothing ever will."

Iruka let his gaze fall onto the floor. His words hit hard, something he wasn't ready for in the slightest. "Never?"

He tore his gaze away from the practicing students outside. Anger once more bubbled. "I was alone for most of my time here. If you wanted a chance, you should've tried years before it even happened. "

"So, what now?" Iruka softly asked, looking up to Naruto.

With a sigh Naruto stood up and walked to the door. "I don't care. You figure that out."

Konoha's market square was being transformed for the upcoming festivities. Stands were being placed at the sides for beverages and snacks. Tables were being placed all around and a special area was being designated for dancing and fireworks was being set up on the roofs. A large portion would be covered by canopies, to account for possible bad weather.

All in all, it would be a memorable night, regardless of the uncertainty that lay ahead.

Initially, Hinata wanted to ask Naruto to accompany her to the party but after Nami no Kuni she decided against it. Their mission in Yuki had made her believe that she could truly bring Naruto back.

But his harsh words had brought her back to reality, something she still needed come to terms with, not to mention their conversation the other day.

To her surprise, it was Kiba who asked her to be his date to the festivity, and she happily had said yes. She knew that Kiba had taken a liking to her, but she never gave it any real thought, especially with Naruto's return. When he came back, her feelings came along with it. Something she initially tried to suppress.

One which she failed miserably.

Despite it all…despite how the blonde had changed, she still loved him.

Giving one last glance to stage where a music band would be playing tonight, she turned and left the market square.

Ahead she saw her old teacher Kurenai walking, along with Asuma. She forced her thoughts away and headed over towards them. "Kurenai-sensei!"

Kurenai turned and noticed her former student. "Hinata. How are you?"

"I'm doing well. Are you looking forward to tonight?"

Her teacher wrapped her arm around Asuma. "Definitely. Aren't we, Asuma?"

Asuma let out a grunt but nodded, lacking any enthusiasm. "Of course."

"I hear Kiba asked you." Kurenai said as she gave a knowing look.

"He did. He's picking me up early in the evening."

Kurenai hadn't been very happy with Naruto returning into Hinata's life. She was glad to see her student step away from the blonde. "I'm sure you'll both have a great time. You deserve it," She gave a warm smile and tugged on Asuma's arm. "Let's get going, we still have a lot to do!"

Hinata watched her teacher leave with her partner with slight tinge of jealousy. She longed for what Kurenai had. Her thoughts almost instantly went to Naruto.

It was something Hawke had dreamt of, ever since coming to the elemental nations. But as the years passed by, he never had the pleasure of experiencing it properly. But now… it looked as if his mouth watered at the prospect of it all.

"Shōgatsu…" He whispered

Micheru couldn't help but shake her head in amusement. "Still? You've been here for years now."

He grabbed her by her shoulders. "You don't understand…It's the Shōgatsu! And we're celebrating it in a major village!" he shook her in excitement.

A bewildered Micheru tried to stop her friend. "Alright, alright."

"Is he still acting like a kid?" Naruto rounded a corner and noticed Hawke's antics.

"Obviously. You think he'll ever change?"

Hawke's goofy grin was the only indication as he started to walk about the market square. Taking in everything.

Micheru looked up at her fellow blonde. "How have you been?"

He gave her a nod. "I'm alright, and you?"

She hesitated. She did feel better. Physically she was mostly recovered, but mentally she still felt unsure. "I'm getting there."

They watched as Hawke slowly made his way back to them, enthusiastically speaking with various workers, who were trying to get everything in order for tonight.

Micheru suddenly turned to him. "What are you doing tonight?"

He gave his head a slight turn, indicating he was listening. "Sleep, most likely." That was a lie and they both knew it.

The corner of her mouth tilted upward. "Then I was wondering if you'd like to join me to the party tonight."

There was a moment of silence and the corners of his mouth moved upward, if only slightly. "Are you asking me on a date?"

With a flustered look she turned away. "What if I am?"

A soft chuckle could be heard, causing her to turn back towards him. It had been the first time since Suna since she had heard him laugh.

He smiled at her and gave her a nod. "I would love that."

"Love what?" Hawke asked as he rejoined the duo.

"Naruto here will accompany me to the festivities tonight."

Hawke looked between the two. "And here I was about to ask you."

"I'm sorry, Hawke-" Micheru started but got interrupted.

"Ptsj, I meant Naruto." He said with dead seriousness. One that quickly gave way to a snicker.

Micheru broke out in laughter and Naruto merely shook his head, a big smile on his face. "Baka…"

"Jokes aside. I hope you'll have fun! I'll see you tonight." Hawke passed between the two, patting them on the shoulder.

"Who are you gonna ask?" Micheru quickly asked, before Hawke was out of range.

"I already asked Ayame, from that food stand you love so much."

Naruto didn't expect that. "And she said yes?"

"Of course!"

"Poor girl."

Hawke turned around the corner, but not before giving a mocking glare towards the blonde.

"So…You want to meet up here, around 9?" Micheru asked, slightly fidgeting with her hands.

'I want to go my mom.'

A grimace appeared on his face before it settled back into a neutral expression. "Sounds like a plan."

She reached for his hand and squeezed it in comfort. "I'll see you tonight. Get some sleep, you look like a zombie."

"Hn"

She quirked an eyebrow but ignored it and walked off, giving him a small wave.

She was right. He needed to get a few hours in. Rubbing the back of his neck he slowly made his way to the barracks.

Even though it was cold outside, the turnout was immense. It was clear people needed this.

With a drink in her hand, Ino watched as more people started trickling in. "Where's Shikamaru! I can't believe he's late."

Sakura sympathetically patted her on the arm. She wasn't concerned with Sasuke's tardiness. He would show up when he wanted to. "You know how Shikamaru is."

"I'm going to beat him to a pulp!"

Both were wearing dresses that worked best for them. Sakura was wearing a red loose dress, while Ino was wearing a formfitting lavender colored dress. Both had also changed their hairstyle, with the former having tied up her hair in a bun, while the latter had opted to wearing her hair loose.

"Calm down. Look, there he is." Sakura pointed towards the entrance where Shikamaru and Choji were walking.

Behind the duo they could see Naruto, entering the square by himself. "Hey look, it's Naruto." Sakura added.

Ino recalled her conversation with her fellow blonde. "Have you talked to him recently?"

Sakura let out a sigh and shook her head. "He was supposed to visit for a checkup last Tuesday. He didn't show."

"He's a mess. He just manages to hide it well." Ino gave him one last sympathetic look before she focused on Shikamaru who joined the two girls.

Naruto walked past the group and gave them a nod. Otherwise, he didn't slow down and headed towards the back.

"Couldn't come on time, now, could you?" Ino huffed in annoyance.

Shikamaru shrugged. "It's only 8:45!"

"And we said 08:00!"

"Troublesome…"

Sakura's eyes darted between the two but quickly broke away from the group when she noticed Sasuke entering the square. The perfect excuse.

She quickly hopped towards her boyfriend and wrapped an arm around his. "Hey Sasuke-kun."

Sasuke looked at her in amusement. "Glad to see me, or glad to escape their argument?"

"Little bit of both." She giggled and steered him towards one of the stands.

Sasuke looked around the area, his eyes locking onto Naruto's still form. He was looking at the stage where a band was playing. "Shouldn't we say hi to Naruto?"

Sakura slowed down and looked at the blonde as well. "If you think he's in the mood for it."

He took the lead and headed over to their former teammate. Now that she thought about it, they didn't really have a chat with just the three of them…ever since.

"Teme."

Naruto turned to the newcomers, his face held a neutral expression. "Sasuke…Sakura."

"How are you, Naruto?" Sakura asked as she eyed his stance. It seemed he was no longer limping and that the wounds were almost completely healed.

"I'm fine, Sakura." He turned to leave but Sasuke stopped him.

"Why don't we get a drink?" he asked semi-awkwardly.

Naruto smirked. "As long as Haruno doesn't play the doctor every two minutes."

Sakura was about to protest but her partner shushed her with a wave of his hand. "I'm sure she can show some control, can't you Sakura-chan."

Her mouth open and closed a few times. Her face showed clear indignation. "Fine!"

The three headed over to one of the stands and ordered some soft drinks. "Who's your date?" the kunoichi asked.

He took a sip from his drink. "Micheru. She should be here any minute actually."

"I expected Hinata, honestly." Sasuke said, he too took a sip.

Naruto let out something akin to a snort. "No. Not after our chat the other day. Besides," he looked around and saw more familiar faces. He took another swig from his drink. "She needs to let go of her childhood crush. It would never work."

"But were you ever interested in her?" curiosity peaked, and Sakura had to know if the feeling had been mutual for him.

"No... Though, who knows, what would've happened if I hadn't left." He downed the rest of his drink and put it back on the bar.

"Ah, the 'what ifs'. My precious students reminiscing."

"Sure, let's keep it at reminiscing, Kakashi." Naruto turned to the newcomer. He had opted for a simplistic dark outfit. One which was complemented by his regular eye cover.

"Makes you think, about what would've happened if you had stayed."

"No Reavers in this scenario?" Naruto asked, mildly interested at the idea of it all.

Sasuke nodded. "Sure."

The blonde scratched his chin, mulling it over. "Probably us constantly fighting, maybe you even leaving the village again. The Akatsuki showing up, taking all the Bijuu. You would undoubtedly join them, maybe even a team of your own. Eventually an epic showdown with the Akatsuki losing and us emerging victorious."

The three Konoha-nin blinked, which in turn caused Naruto to let out a cheeky grin. "I'm just kidding. Mostly."

Sasuke smirked and gave the blonde a shove. "Teme."

Sakura looked at the group and smiled. "It's strange. All of us here. Like the old days."

Naruto initially wanted to give a rude but honest response, but decide against it, and instead gave a single nod. "Where's your other teammate?"

"Ridou? He should be here soon," Sakura said as she looked around. "I see your date has arrived."

Naruto followed her gaze and saw Micheru standing there. He did a double take when he noticed just how lovely she looked. Micheru had always been attractive girl, but never really paid too much attention to it, unlike most other men. Sure, she would catch his attention when she entered a room, but he didn't drool like an idiot either.

"She's gorgeous…" Sakura whispered.

For once he agreed with her. She looked absolutely breathtaking. Gone was her hunter's outfit and instead she wore a dress that clung to her body perfectly. When she was in a fight her hair was tied into a ponytail. Now though she had opted for curls.

"What are you still here for?" Kakashi gave him a shove towards her.

Naruto ignored it, but did head over to her, straightening his own outfit.

Micheru noticed him approaching and gave a wide smile, making her way over to him. "Hey Naruto."

He returned the smile with a genuine one of his own. "You look beautiful."

She gestured towards him. "You don't look half bad yourself. It's strange not seeing you in a combat attire."

"Hey! I could say the same."

"I guess after our training period, we didn't hang out a lot." She said, recalling years past.

He shook his head. "We really should make up for it."

She playfully slapped him on the arm. "Yes, we should."

He held out his arm, which she gracefully accepted, linking their arms together.

Hinata watched from the corner of her eye as Naruto and Micheru walked together towards a stall, to get a drink. She felt jealousy looking at the two, but she forced it down and instead gave Kiba a smile. She had to admit, Kiba was acting like a gentleman. Gone was his bravado and instead was a calm and mature young man.

The music began to swell as the band officially kicked off the night. Colorful lighting was turned on, completing the transformation of the market square. People started swarming the dancefloor, while other were watching from their comfortable seats.

She looked around and noticed her friends, and her teacher were among the many who headed for the dancefloor as well. Even though she had conflicted feelings, she felt genuinely happy. The Shōgatsu always had a way of easing people's minds.

"Hinata-kun, do you want to dance?"

She turned back to Kiba; her dark dress twirled at the motion. She had chosen to wear a loose, yet semi-form fitting dress. A modest dress that worked well with her personality. She gave another warm smile. "I would love to Kiba. Let me just put this away." She gestured for her drink and turned to place it on the table. She locked her eyes with Naruto's.

He had given her a brief glance as he was talking with Micheru. He raised his glass before turning his focus back on his date.

Her breathing hitched for a moment but regained her composure quickly. Since his return she had seen little of her crush. The only time she had, was shortly after the fight of when they had wheeled him to the hospital. The discussion they had in Nami no Kuni had all but disappeared from her mind, worrying for his life.

Afterwards he changed, even more than when his resurface as Orodochi Ghost had, leaving her to wonder how bad the fighting had been in Sunagakure. Something she had been wondering as of late. The hurtful remarks, had it been truthful? or was it linked to his behavior due to what happened?

She did a quick 180 and put Naruto out of her mind while wrapping her arm around Kiba's. "Shall we?"

He grinned and guided her to the dancefloor, oblivious to her feelings that were bubbling underneath the surface.

.

As the first two hours had passed and people were indulged in either drinking or dancing, Naruto found himself enjoying the festivities. He had danced with Micheru to a rather upbeat song and for the first time since being back in Konoha after their defeat in Suna, he hadn't thought about…them.

He didn't realize the smile that had been etched on his face ever since dancing with Micheru, who was twirling around in front of him. It only widened when Hawke 'accidentally' bumped into him when he came marching past them, leading Ayame to the center of the dancefloor. "Baka…"

"Don't think I don't hear or understand that!" he heard Hawke shout, which was remarkable due to the volume of the music.

Micheru's twirl came to a stop right in front of him, her hair slightly ruffled. She beamed in happiness. "I'm having so much fun!"

Naruto wholeheartedly agreed. Not having to worry about the war the loomed, or the pressure from Konoha was something he thoroughly enjoyed. They both noticed that the band had taken a short break. "Want to get something to drink?"

Her eyes held a mischievous twinkle. "Sake?"

His hand wrapped around her waist as they walked to the edge of the dancefloor. "Of course. Hopefully Hawke stays away with his weird drinks."

She chuckled but agreed.

After getting a drink they went for one of the many bar tables standing at various spots, with most of them being occupied.

"I'm surprised I haven't seen your mother or Rome for that matter." He said as he gave a brief glance around.

"They said they would, probably just running late."

He quirked an eyebrow. "Are they…?"

"My mom denies it…But I'm fairly sure they are. She thinks I would oppose it." Micheru reached for one of the dishes and downed it, giving Naruto a wink.

"Would you though?" he reached for another and did the same, winking as well.

"Of course not! It's been years since my dad…" She trailed off slightly, before shaking her head. "Anyways, she deserves happiness."

"A very mature stance."

"Hey!"

He chuckled and let her slap his shoulder. "All about hitting me tonight, aren't we?"

"You deserve it."

"Sure."

Micheru looked at the dancing people around. "Isn't that Hinata?"

He followed her gaze, spotting her after a couple of seconds of looking. "She's with Kiba. Poor girl."

She nearly choked on her drink before breaking out in light laughter. "You want to say hi?"

"Let's not." He responded light heartedly.

The arrival of Kitase, along with a girl turned them around. "Hey you two."

Naruto gave Kitase a quick up and down. He was dressed in a light blue outfit. It bore a strange sigil he hadn't seen before, which he assumed to be of his clan. "Kitase-san. How are things? And who's your date?" he asked politely.

he turned slightly and gestured towards the young brunette. "This is Yuito. She works in the hospital as a nurse."

Naruto reached over and shook her head, introducing himself and Micheru. "Nice to meet you."

Micheru chimed in and stepped aside to create some more space for the two. "I hope he doesn't behave like an idiot, Yuito." She said with a wink towards the girl, who grinned.

"Oh, he is, but I can handle it."

Micheru wrapped an arm around the girl. "I like you already!"

Kitase shook his head before turning to Naruto. "I haven't spoken to you in a while. I hope you had a full recovery…"

Naruto rolled his shoulders. "A bit stiff but I've started training again so…"

The Ame-nin could sense that Naruto wasn't comfortable talking about it, so he turned to Micheru. "What about you?"

Her injuries, while bad, hadn't been life threatening. Considering how desperate the whole situation had been, especially nearing the end…It was a miracle in itself. "I'm fine, Kitase. Let's focus on other things, huh?"

Kitase looked between the two and understood. He wrapped his arm around Yuito. "I think I'll take this one to the dance floor. I'll see you two in a bit, okay?"

"See you shortly."

Micheru and Naruto locked eyes with each other. They reached for the last two dishes and toasted.

Kakashi had long since opted for a more seclusive spot, watching the festivities from a nearby rooftop. He was watching his former students with a sad smile. Sakura and Sasuke, Ridou and his partner Ren. His gaze eventually turned to the two blondes, Naruto and Micheru.

It seemed that they all had found some form of happiness. Slowly he reached for his pocket and pulled out a folded picture. It was clear it was an older one, with creases and the edge showing signs of old age. His fingertips slid over the picture, as if he was caressing it.

On the picture were Kakashi and Rin. The late Kushina had ambushed him, knowing full his reluctance with taking pictures. Rin had her arms wrapped around his neck as she tried kissing him on the cheek. He in turn had his arms flailing about, their antics had caught him by surprise.

They had been together for 1 month in that photo. Unbeknownst to them that Rin would die two weeks later.

Her death had broken him. Obito's had pushed him to the edge…but her had sent him falling over it. He had never fully recovered from it either. His daily trips to the memorial stone were evidence enough.

An overwhelming feeling of grief overcame him, and he desperately wanted to let it out. Instead, he folded he photo and put it back in his pocket. Not that it helped with his grief.

"Shouldn't you be down there, Kakashi-taicho?"

He didn't turn, but instead let his eyes glaze over, yet he responded as if his attention was on the newcomer. "I could say the same to you, Yamato."

"And let you sit here, alone in the dark? Gai would have my head."

Kakashi nudged with his head. "Hmm, more likely to shout some form of indignation. How it messes with his springtime of youth."

"I would still be in his crosshairs. Neither option seem favorable. Let's head down." Yamato pressed.

"I'm quite comfortable up here. But I appreciate your concern. Now, don't worry about me and go enjoy the party."

A hand gently grasped his shoulder. "Kakashi, we're not going to let you go skulking in the darkness. Pity party ends now."

"Ah…Anko, maybe you should try and bring that across in a nicer way?" the voice of Kurenai appeared off to his right.

"I don't think so, Kurenai!"

"It seems I wasn't as discreet as I had hoped." Regardless he felt the corners of his mouth go up at their gesture.

"We know you, Kakashi. At nights like these, you reminisce about Obito and Rin. Not this time though." He noticed the smell of cigarettes long before Asuma spoke.

"How about it, Taicho?" Yamato held out his hand.

Kakashi briefly considered it before he grasped it and let himself be pulled up. "Alright, lead the way."

Yamato smiled and nodded before leading the group off the roof.

His smile widened as Obito's old words echoed in his mind. 'Those who abandon their friends are worse than scum.'

He'd never have to worry that they would.

Naruto was leaning on the table in front of him, watching Micheru and Hawke's interaction with semi-interest. Glancing at the clock he noticed they were less than an hour away from midnight.

A blue hand slapping the table brought him out of his reveries. "Brat."

His mouth curved upwards. "Sushi. Enjoying yourself?" he asked while turning to his 'upcoming' teammate.

A toothy grin appeared. "This isn't my thing…But Pein ordered me to stay in Konoha. I have to enjoy myself somehow. Just passing through though."

From the corner of his eye, he saw two figures approaching, turning slightly he noticed it was Ino and Shikamaru. "There's good food though, especially the fish…" The blonde trailed off as he realized his mistake.

There was a moment of silence as the two looked at each other before Kisame let out a bark of laughter which was followed by Naruto's smirk. "Enjoy your friends, brat."

Kisame clapped him on the shoulder as he passed, with Naruto acknowledging the gesture.

Seconds later Ino and Shikamaru joined his table, with shortly after, Neji and Tenten. "What did he want with you?" Ino asked, her gaze following Kisame for a moment, before turning back to Naruto.

He shrugged. "With Kisame you never really know."

"Are you close friends with him?" Tenten asked as she quickly leaned back to reach for another table, where some snacks lay about, transferring it to their table.

Kisame and Naruto's relationship was a strange one. It had been one purely based out of respect for one another's ability. But when Kisame came to him with the plans for Irosa, everything had changed. For good and worse.

His initial anger after their 'assignment' was a displaced one. Kisame wasn't to blame for what happened. He had merely found out and asked him for help. He'd been the one to say yes in the first place.

"Somewhat, I guess. We're assigned to the same team in the upcoming fight."

Shikamaru knew that questioning the friendship Naruto had with Akatsuki members would only lead to friction. Unfortunately, Ino did not realize that.

"You should be careful around them, Naruto. They're rogue-nin for a reason." Ino looked at her fellow blonde with worry, still concerned about his mental health.

He narrowed his eye and from the corner he could already see Shikamaru facepalming. "You think it's smart to give me advice on who to befriend?"

"I-I just meant-"

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "I know what you meant and because of that, I'll let it slide. You should actually be on your hands and knees, praising them. They've lost a lot of good fighters to this war, keeping Konoha safe."

"Let's focus instead on the party!" Tenten exclaimed as she started moving on the beat of the music, hoping that her antics would help move the conversation away.

"Josh! Tenten, you are truly in the springtime of your youth! - Gai-sensei!" Lee shouted from a small distance away, his fists pumped in the air.

"Lee!" Tenten started but was interrupted just as fast.

"What is it, my most exuberant of students!" a magical Gai appeared, completely in sync with Lee.

"Tenten is showing passion to our cause!"

Tenten was itching away but was firmly kept in place by Neji who saw the opportunity to trap her in their antics. "Neji! Please!"

"Gosh, is this true?! WHY HAVEN'T YOU SHOWN US THIS BEFORE!" Gai started marching over, who, despite being at a new year's event was wearing a similar spandex outfit he normally wore.

Naruto couldn't help it and laughed. He had to admit that Gai and Lee's 'way of life' was a very amusing sight.

The others noticed that Naruto was enjoying himself and couldn't help but join in. Happy that there weren't any heated arguments.

"Neji, if you don't let me go this-"

There was a scuffle as Tenten was literally handed off to hyperactive duo and dragged away.

"I'll never forgive you!" she could hear them say as she disappeared into the crowd. Sakura and Hinata were watching her pass them by as they neared the group of comrades.

"Neji-nii, you are evil."

At that moment, The Hyuuga appeared as a truly evil villain, smirk adorned and all. "She deserved it for the other day."

Hinata noticed the blonde and initially wanted to say something, but her mouth closed. She felt unsure what to say.

Sakura knew of her friend's uncertainty and gave her a gentle pad on her back. "Can you believe those two are wearing almost the exact same outfit as they normally do?"

"Troublesome bunch."

"Almost as troublesome as arriving on time!"

"You're still going on about this, woman?"

"Of course-"

Naruto was still grinning, observing the half-hearted back and forth between Ino and Shikamaru. A slender hand appeared in his line of sight. He shifted his attention to his right, drowning out the bickering and settled his gaze on Micheru.

"How about a dance, Orodochi?"

The chatter of the group seemed to slow down as they watched the two. They had known Micheru for a while now. She had been helping out at Konoha's hospital with the wounded primarily, before shifting to a more active combat role at which she excelled as well. Her contributions to the battle for Suna being a prime example. She was well liked among Konoha, which was intriguing, seeing as she was part of a dangerous organization.

"Anything to get me away from this," Nudging with his head to the group. Despite the jab, it held no real malice. He accepted her invitation and gently took hold of her hand as she led him to the dancefloor where a slow song was humming.

He slid his hands around her waist as he pulled her close to him, guiding her along on the rhythm of the music. His eye was closed for a moment, taking in the sound of the music.

After a moment he reopened his eye and looked into Micheru's. "Arigato…"

She tilted her head slightly. "I haven't done anything."

"You're always there for us…for me. I've never given you enough credit."

She playfully patted him on the chest. "I should be thanking you, Naruto-kun."

He twirled her in his arms before coming face to face once more. "Could you've have imagined us, here, together?"

She let out a tiny shake, her eyes darting between his eye and his lips. "You?"

He mimicked her shake. "Not that you'll hear me complaining though."

"Glad to see you've warmed up to me. " She said softly, as if her thoughts were lingering on something else.

"You wore me down." A small grin adorned his face.

"And I'm glad for it." She, and in particular, her hips swayed on the rhythm, her face inched closer to his.

He could hear her breathing hitch and his smile increased slightly. His head tilting slightly to the left but keeping the gap between the two. "Are you sure?

"Pretty sure…" she whispered as the corners of her mouth curved upwards in amusement. Her eyes slowly closed.

Her breathing tickled his lips ever so lightly. Slowly he leaned forward, his lips brushing against hers.

Once more he could feel her breathing hitch in anticipation, yet he lingered. "Orodochi…" she softly started. "If you don't kiss me now, I'll make you pay."

He let out a near unnoticeable chuckle. "Yes ma'am." Without further hesitation, he slowly pressed his lips up against hers, both giving into the feelings they held for one another.

"Look at that…" Ino softly said as she watched Naruto and Micheru dance together, leaning slightly into Shikamaru.

"They look cute together." Tenten said, having returned to the group. Her eyes darted to Neji. She's had feelings for the Hyuuga for a few years now but was unsure how to act on it.

Hinata listened to Tenten and wholeheartedly disagreed. All she felt, was her heart breaking in numerous pieces. Her earlier mental declarations hadn't helped her in the slightest. She bit her lower lip as her younger self bubbled to the surface and took hold.

Sakura could practically feel the sadness rolling off Hinata and she stepped close to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. "Maybe it's for the best. Hinata…"

At that moment Naruto and Micheru kissed, causing the group to break out into quiet cheers, while Hinata did her best not to run off.

"About time, they've been dancing around it for a while now." Kakashi said as he joined the group.

"Kakashi-sensei!" a surprised Sakura said. "Where did you run off to?"

"Oh, you know, lost on the road of life."

"Baka…"

Ino turned to Shikamaru and dragged him to the dancefloor. "No escaping this time!"

For once, Shikamaru didn't complain and followed her willingly.

Sakura was about to comfort Hinata when Sasuke appeared in front of her. He held out his hand as an invitation. "Sakura-chan. Do you want to dance?"

Sakura looked between Hinata and Sasuke. It was clear she wanted to dance, but she didn't want to leave Hinata's side.

The Hyuuga heiress gave her a light shove. "Go. Have fun." She did her best to sound happy.

Sakura hesitated. "Are you sure?"

"Yes! Now go!" she said, forcing herself to smile.

The pink-haired kunoichi mouthed a silent 'thank you' and turned to Sasuke, grasping his hand tightly.

As a big part of the group left to join the two blondes on the dancefloor, Hinata stayed behind with Neji and Kakashi, who knew about the girl's crush. A crush that she finally would have to let go of.

"Hinata?"

Kiba was walking over, along with Shino and his sister Hana.

"Hey Kiba. I see you managed to find your sister and Shino." Hinata tried her best to sound happy, succeeding somewhat in her attempt.

He nodded, his gaze flicking towards the dancefloor. "You uhm, wanna dance?"

Blinking, she let the question hang for a few seconds before she gave him a big smile. This time she was more successful. "I'd like that very much, Kiba-kun."

He took her by the hand and walked to the others, but not before Hana ruffled his hair in passing.

Kakashi was watching the group enjoy the music, his eye turned into his trademark 'eye-smile'.

While the music was changing into a fast-paced upbeat song, better suited to the final minutes of the year, Naruto and Micheru paid the others no mind as they only had eyes for each other.

"Naruto, you've wounded my heart!" an overly melodramatic voice rang out, gripping their shoulders tight and pulling them apart.

In front of them was a clearly drunk Hawke. He was shaking Naruto as he was explaining how his heart supposedly belonged to him.

Naruto watched Micheru from the corner of his eye, who was slightly embarrassed by the whole situation, but was still grinning. "Hawke, this really isn't a great tim-"

Hawke put Naruto in a head while ruffling his hair. "Was I interrupting something? That's a shame!"

"I hate you," Naruto grumbled half-heartedly, looking up to Micheru who was enjoying the scene unfold. "You know…I could use your help."

She waved her hands in front of her. "Oh no, no…you got this!" covering her hand with her mouth as she giggled.

Hawke eventually let him go, but only because the last two minutes of the year were counting down. His teacher looked at him with a genuine happy face. "I'm happy for you two."

Naruto embraced Hawke in a brotherly hug. "Thank you…"

He patted the blonde on the back before stepping back. Around them, people were cheering and starting the countdown as it reached its final 30 seconds. It was completely filled to the brim with people, shinobi and civilians alike. He recognized a lot of people and could even spot Konan enjoying herself. She noticed him looking about and gave him a nod in acknowledgment.

"10!"

"9!"

Naruto turned to Micheru once more, who was talking with her mother. She caught his gaze and waved him over. sliding past the people, he reunited as the final few seconds were counted down, wrapping her in his arms once more, ignoring the surprised face of Mayu.

"2!"

"1!"

She cupped his face lovingly "Happy new year." She whispered before she planted her soft tender lips on his.

Fireworks shot into the air, along with a loud bell tolling, signifying the new year. All around people were celebrating, embracing one another. All the while cheers and other celebrations could be heard.

Others who were more culturally inclined, remained silent and listened as the bell was nearing its halfway point to the 108 mark.

Mayu was incredibly happy to see her daughter find happiness of her own. She knew that Micheru had always been someone who had a very positive outlook on live. She was cheerful, despite the horrors that were taking place. It had started taking its toll though. She noticed that her demeanor had changed, especially after the battle for Suna.

"Good to see her happy again." Rome said as he watched the two blondes only had eyes for each other, smiles and light laughter in between the kisses.

Mayu couldn't agree more, resting her head on Rome's shoulder, her mind wandering to the peaceful days of Mirarca.

Slowly the music rose again as the bells reached its end, and people started dancing once more. Something that would continue until the early hours of the morning.

Naruto and Micheru remained either oblivious to the people around them and the music, or simply didn't care.

Fun fact: This was one of the very first chapters I wrote, obviously having done some major rewrites over the years, but this was always on the board. I tried making a slight modern shōgatsu type of festivities, but also trying to keep in mind the old japanese traditions, which I did some research on (I only did a minor mention of it, hopefully I didn't screw it up!).

Next chapter is an interesting one, can't wait for you all to read it!

I hope you all enjoyed this one, and see you next time!
