Elena was currently with me in my room. I was pretty sure that she was still mad at Stefan for not telling her that she looked like Katherine, but I was also pretty sure that she hadn't told him that she kissed Damon. I didn't want to tell him because I didn't want to break them up. I was attracted to Elena but I wasn't even really looking for a relationship. In truth, I hadn't ever actually had a relationship. High school in the 60s was very different than it was now. People really didn't date as much as they did back then.
"Do you have any idea who that man in the road was?" Elena asked.
"I only saw about as much as you did." I stated. "Considering that neither of us saw his face, I would say that there are thousands of people it could be."
"How many vampires are there?" She inquired.
"I don't know how you expect me to know the answer to that." I replied as she giggled. "So just because Damon didn't do anything doesn't mean that he couldn't have. I need you to promise me that you will never take your necklace off again. Speaking of which, I got you something."
I pulled out a box of vervain.
"This is vervain. It's the same stuff that's in your necklace." I explained.
"How does vervain work anyway?" She asked.
"You can put it food or drink or jewelry. I even made a manly bracelet for Jeremy." I stated. "I know it's confusing that, but just know that as long as it's on you or in you vampires can't get in your head. I also got you something else."
"This is Jeremy's watch. He's been looking for this. Did you take it?" She asked as she looked at me accusingly.
"No. Logan must have stolen it from him and Damon stole it from Logan and I stole it from Damon." I replied. I specifically hadn't stolen it from Jeremy.
"Why does it look different?" She asked as she noticed it wasn't telling time.
"It's because it's more than just a watch." I replied as I noticed the needle was pointing my way. "Stefan told me that Jonathan Gilbert used to use it detect vampires. This will prevent vampires from sneaking up on you."
I wasn't sure if it would actually help if a vampire tried to sneak up on her though.
"So Jeremy and I were going to get some pizza. Did you want to come over?" She asked.
"I would but I'm pretty sure that Rachel doesn't want to ever let me out of her sight again." I joked. She then headed out the door.
The next day, I came downstairs wearing a red off-shoulder cropped sweater and a high-waisted black skirt with a black heels while Rachel wore a tight blue tee and jeans and matching heels. We were going to make sure that Stefan went to school today. We found Damon in the study tearing up the bookshelf.
"What are you doing?" Stefan asked.
"It's nothing any of you should be concerned about." Damon replied without looking at any of us.
I was pretty sure that it was part of Damon's plan to find another way into the tomb. I didn't know why he thought that something in the study would help him with it but I was pretty sure that there was definitely another way into the tomb. I was pretty sure that most spells had more than one way to dispel them. I probably could have found another way to change back into a guy, but I wasn't worried about that anymore.
"You took Brandy and Elena across state lines so we're automatically concerned." Rachel remarked as I blushed.
"The three of us had a blast before that witch double-crossed us." He stated as I glared at him. He better not say that Elena kissed him.
"I get it. You're jealous because I get to be with the one that I want to be with and poor Katherine is just out of reach." Stefan said. I was pretty sure that his relationship wasn't as secure as he thought it was. "Unless she isn't. You're looking for another way into the tomb. Is that why you went to see Bree?"
"You're pathetic when you're fishing." Damon noted.
"And you're transparent when you're deflecting." Stefan argued. You know Stefan hadn't actually asked me about what we did there. Did he not think that I was a useful source? Granted I was incredibly drunk, but that was only in the evening.
"Don't you kids have school?" Damon asked as he finally looked at us. You know it was kind of impressive how he managed to carry on that entire conversation without ever looking at anyone.
When it came to the tomb, I had some mixed feelings. On the one hand, being reunited with Katherine would make Damon happy. On the other hand I had doubts that every vampire in there was friendly. Still, they would be desiccated, so they wouldn't just be able to walk out of there. Maybe there was a way that we would be able to get Katherine out and leave the rest. My biggest concern with that was that I didn't want Damon to find Katherine and leave because it really wouldn't be possible for her to be here with Elena here.
At lunch, I was with Elena when Caroline showed up. You know I couldn't help but find it weird that they were letting us eat outside. I had seen it on TV, but I had never heard of a school in real life that actually allowed that. Anyway, Caroline was wearing the necklace that I had told Rachel to give her.
"That's a new necklace." Elena commented.
"Thanks. Rachel gave it to me." The blonde replied.
"Are you and Rachel a thing now?" I asked.
"I wanted to talk you about that." Caroline admitted. "I mean I wanted to talk to you, but there really isn't very much to say. I feel like we've peaked as friends, but I don't know if she wants to be more or not or if I want it."
"Well we'll support you with whatever you want to do." Elena commented. You know I didn't think that there would be as many LGBT people in a small town in Virginia than as there were. New York I got, but maybe it had something to do with the younger generation.
"I don't think that I want to ask her to the dance. I have so much work to do to set it up." Caroline commented.
"There's a dance?" I questioned.
"Didn't you notice all of the signs around the school?" She asked. I shook my head because I never really paid attention to those. "It's the 50s Decade Dance. The school goes through yearly cycles throughout the different decades. You would have loved the 40s dance last year. There was some serious Big Band flare."
I had never really paid attention to 40s music because I was a literal child for it. It also meant that I would have to find a 50s outfit in two days. I mean I could probably do it, but it would be annoying. There were a lot of old clothes in the attic. I wondered if my mom's clothes were in there. She ended up disappearing a few years after my father died and my brothers and I were raised by my aunt until I graduated.
After school, I was at the Grill with Elena and Bonnie. I was brainstorming ideas for what to wear to the dance, but I was pretty sure that Elena wanted to talk about something else. If it was to tell Bonnie that she was adopted, why didn't she tell Caroline…oh right the girl could not keep a secret unless she was compelled to and that was not going to happen anymore.
"I can't believed you're adopted," Bonnie declared.
"It gets weirder. I looked at my birth certificate and it says my parents are Miranda and Grayson Gilbert on it." Elena explained.
"It's really not that weird." I commented. They both looked at me. "Your dad was a doctor and your birth mother apparently bailed before she could fill anything out. They probably thought it was better for you to have loving parents than someone who clearly didn't want you. I'm sure that they would have told you eventually."
"So what were the 50s like?" Bonnie asked me.
"I was child during the 50s." I pointed out. I then decided to look at Elena. I wasn't sure if she had said anything. I would probably trust Bonnie with it more than Caroline. She nodded. "And a boy."
"Was it weird learning to deal with a new body?" Bonnie asked.
"Not really since I was turned pretty much immediately after." I declared. "The biggest issue was dealing with being so short. Now if you excuse me, I need to go find something to wear to the dance."
I went outside and to the thrift store down the street where I found that I wasn't the only one there.
"Looking for a last minute outfit for the dance too?" Anna asked me.
"Yeah, I'm kind of not sure what to do." I replied.
"You know I think you would make a good Grace Kelly." She commented. "Specifically Rear Window Grace Kelly."
"You know that could work." I stated. I hadn't thought of that. I was pretty sure that there was a dress like that in the boarding house. "Do you need help finding anything to wear?"
"No, but I could use a date." She replied. I blushed. "Maybe we could just meet there so it won't be too weird. And to answer your question, I was going to go as the Queen of Country."
I didn't know who she was talking about. It probably wasn't Faith Hill because I don't think she was even born in the 50s.
"So is that going to be a yes or a no?" She asked me.
"Oh well I'm not really looking for anything serious right now." I declared.
"It doesn't have to be serious. It's just a date." She pointed out.
"I guess I can go out with you." I replied before I got a text from Elena saying that she needed to talk now. "But I have to go now."
I headed back to the boarding house and Elena was with Stefan and Rachel, looking clearly shaken up.
"What happened?" I asked her.
"That man in the road called me." Elena explained. How did he get her number? "Why did he call me. I felt like I was in Scream. I don't know why he would call me…or how he got my number in the first place."
"We're predators, Elena." Stefan explained. That still didn't explain how he got her number. "For some the thrill of the hunt is just as satisfying as the kill."
Maybe it was because when it came to killing, I had killed like maybe five people, but I didn't understand that. Possibly because I had stuck to mostly drinking from blood bags or Rachel. I never drank enough to kill unless I was feeling threatened and that didn't happen very much. Even when I kill Rachel's parents it wasn't by drinking their blood.
"We're not going to let him hurt you." I said.
"It sounds like something Damon would do." Elena commented.
"No, Damon tires of the theatrics too quickly." Stefan explained. "He just kills people at random."
He hadn't killed me at random. To be fair, he probably would have if I didn't tell him my name.
The following night, I was dressed in a dress with a black bodice and a white tulle skirt. Rachel was working on my hair.
"I don't think your hair is the right shade for this outfit." She commented as she curled my hair.
"Shut up." I replied. "We can't all dress like Marilyn."
"Yeah you don't really have the boobs for it." She stated.
"So do you think Caroline is going to like your outfit?" I teased.
"When are you going to let that go?" Rachel asked.
"As soon as you admit that you like her." I replied before she pulled my hair. "Ow."
"Sorry, slipped." She said as I glared. I got up and we went to meet Stefan. Stefan handed Damon a book.
"Here you go." He stated.
"Why are you giving me dad's journal?" Damon asked as he looked at us.
"I don't know, maybe because you were looking for it. Do you wanna read it? I have. Nowhere in there does it say anything about Katherine, the tomb, or how to open it." Stefan told him.
"I'm not surprised. The man could barely even spell his own name." Damon retorted. Giuseppe wasn't the easiest name to spell.
"I'm sorry that our father wasn't able to help you." Stefan stated. Was he? "I could though. We all could."
I wasn't sure why he was volunteering us. Stefan also seemed like he had an ulterior motive. I was still on the fence about it.
"What's the catch?" Damon inquired. Yes, what was the catch.
"No catch. I'd do anything to get you out of this house, even get Katherine back." Stefan retorted. I thought we agreed we wanted him to stay.
"What about the other 26 vampires?" Damon inquired. They wouldn't be able to get out.
"No, they have to stay, but Katherine I'll consider." Stefan declared.
"Why should I trust you?" Damon responded.
"Think about it." Stefan declared before we went out the door.
When we got to the Gilbert house, I couldn't help but notice that the door was open. Something was seriously wrong. I ran in right before the mystery vampire was about to bite into Elena's neck. He seemed to realize that he was outnumbered and ran away and I gave Elena a tight hug.
"He was the pizza guy." She said.
"We need to get Damon here." I stated.
So we called Damon and he came over. Damon already kind of dressed like he was someone from the 50s with his James Dean style.
"How did he get in?" Damon asked.
"He was invited." Elena replied.
"He posed as a pizza delivery guy." I told him.
"Well he gets points for that." Damon commented. "Did he say what he wanted?"
"No. He was too busy trying to eat me." Elena snapped.
"Do you know this guy?" Rachel asked.
"Why does everyone think I know this guy?" Damon questioned. "I don't have any friends, remember?"
"How many of them do you think there are?" Elena replied. Was there anything to lead us to believe that there was more than one?
"We don't know." Damon declared.
"Damon, he's been invited in." Stefan said. Yes, we already knew that. I didn't know why he felt the need to remind us.
"Then we should kill him tonight." Damon declared. He looked at Elena. "Are you up for it?"
"What do I have to do?" Elena responded. Not dying would probably be good.
"Let your boyfriend take you to the dance and we'll see who shows up." Damon stated.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Stefan inquired. What better idea than to go somewhere he expected her to be?
"As long as this guy is alive, this house isn't safe…for anyone who lives in it." Damon declared. I didn't know if he would go after Jeremy or Jenna but it probably wasn't worth risking.
"Let's do it." Elena declared.
We then went to the school. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but it didn't look very good. They could have gone with a diner theme or something. Also they were playing a song from the 60s. Rachel went to the bathroom to fix her makeup while we found Caroline and Bonnie. I realized that I should probably try to find Anna.
"Having fun?" I asked.
"No, but this took two hours to put together so I'm at least staying half of that." Caroline replied. She might change her mind when she saw Rachel.
"What's Damon doing here?" Bonnie asked.
"He wanted to come." I lied.
"We're just going to have to learn to deal with Damon. It's not like we can kill him." Elena stated.
"There's a thought." Bonnie remarked.
"I'll help." Caroline declared before clinking her glass against Bonnie's. Of course they were plastic so they didn't actually clink.
"So have you seen an Asian girl about Bonnie's height?" I asked.
"Yeah, she was over by the punch bowl." Caroline said. I looked over and saw Anna by the punch bowl talking to Jeremy. I wasn't aware that the two of them knew each other. Anna was wearing a white dress with big black polka-dots.
"I wasn't expecting June Carter." I said as I went over to her.
"I told you I was gonna be the queen of country." She stated. "I can't think of anyone more fitting of that title. Can we talk about how tacky this dance looks?"
"Maybe we should do it on the dancefloor?" I suggested.
"Oh right, I probably should dance with my date." Anna said as I noticed that Caroline had noticed Rachel and was gawking at her. They needed to dance together. "What's wrong?"
"Sorry. I'm just trying to set my friend up with someone." I told her. I had to admit that it had been a while since I had danced with someone so short. "How did you learn to dance like this?"
"Maybe I just study dance." She declared. "So what do you like most about the 50s?"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"The 50s wasn't all Korean War, segregation and McCarthyism." She stated. "There were some good parts too."
"Like Elvis." I commented.
"Yeah even though he mostly took the music from black people." She declared. "At least he sounded good."
"Yeah he could have been Pat Boone." I declared. Even kids like me knew how uncool he was.
I had to admit that I had a good time with Anna. I hadn't had a lot of expectations for the date, but it was fun. She seemed to know a lot about the 50s though. I supposed she was kind of a nerd. I then walked over and saw my favorite teacher. Just because she's my favorite doesn't mean that I have a crush on her. I can like her as a teacher. She once again blended in with the students pretty well. I walked over to her.
"Hi." I remarked.
"I feel like that shouldn't be allowed." She remarked. She was referring to Damon dancing with a blonde girl to 'My Boyfriend's Back.'
"I mean yeah. That song is from 1962." I pointed out. "I don't think Damon's going to hurt her. So did you bring a date?"
"That definitely wouldn't be allowed. Chaperones are supposed to come alone." Kelsey remarked. She looked sad. "They had a 50s dance when I went to school here."
"Maybe you should dance with someone. I bet you would have a good time." I suggested.
"I can't." She remarked.
"Then dance by yourself. It should be better than…" I started before I noticed someone in a hoodie. "I need to go."
She looked confused as I walked away.
I went into the hallway and followed him and pushed him against a locker…only to reveal that it was a confused-looking redheaded guy.
"What did I do?" He asked.
"Where is he?" I questioned.
"This guy told me to wear this hoodie." The guy stated. He must have been compelled. This wasn't good.
"Just forget what just happened." I compelled him as I started to go off to look for him. It was soon that I heard Elena's screaming. He was at least a little bit smarter than we gave him credit.
We was once again trying to bite Elena but I managed to stop him before Stefan and Damon came and helped corner him so he couldn't run.
"Hey Dickhead. No one wants to kill you." Damon lied. I was pretty sure that he saw right through because he charged at Elena but jammed a broken mop in what appeared to be his stomach. Apparently they wanted information before they killed him.
So we spent the next few minutes trying to get information from him. We managed to get a little bit. He apparently knew Katherine and was trying to get into the tomb. Apparently it could be opened using Emily Bennett's grimoire but he didn't know the location. Supposedly it was in Jonathan Gilbert's journal which we also didn't know the location of. So that was probably the first thing that we needed to do. I would have to tell Rachel about it. He did not, however, tell us who he was working with. So, Stefan stabbed him in the heart.
"But we didn't find out who he was working for." Elena pointed out.
"Elena, he was invited in. He had to die." Stefan stated. I didn't think we would get anything else out of him anyway.
That was when I noticed Kelsey in the hallway. I went over to her.
"How much of that did you see?" I asked.
"The end of it. I couldn't hear any of it. Why did you kill that guy?" She questioned.
"He was trying to kill Elena and he had already been invited into her house." I stated. "So maybe you should go home."
We then went back to the boarding house. I was feeling tired so I started to get ready for bed. It was then that it dawned on me that I had totally bailed on Anna. I felt bad about it but I didn't have her number to apologize to her. I was pretty sure that Rachel was with Caroline. I hoped that the two of them would finally make things official because Caroline needed someone like her and less like Damon.
I was a little surprised when Elena came into my room. I was at least wearing my pajamas.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I'm not ready to sleep in Stefan's room, so I was hoping that I could stay in here." She remarked.
"Do you just want to sleep?" I inquired. There wasn't any way that I would let her date both me and Stefan and there was also no way that we could get away with that.
"Yes." She answered. "I like Stefan, but it's probably going to take me a little bit of time before I trust him enough to have sex with him again. So I fought back tonight. It felt pretty good."
I wasn't sure how much of a fight she actually put up, but it was probably better than her doing nothing or trying to run all of the time. She would probably need to learn how to fight vampires for real since he most likely wouldn't be the last vampire that we would come across. That was probably something to teach her another day since tomorrow would probably be about trying to get into the tomb. I got into bed and Elena got in next to me and we both fell asleep. I hoped that it wouldn't be too hard.
So not a lot happened in this chapter. It was a bit of a filler, but we did learn something interesting about Brandy's mother and she also had a very small date with Anna. Please don't forget to review.
