Waver was ready. He had done everything right.
From coming to Japan to getting a base of operations. Not needing to worry about food and having all he needed to win this war. The Holy Grail practically his.
'And soon,' Waver thought with a smile. 'I'll be calling upon my own Servant.' A hero of legend. A great myth come to life on his service. With his brain and his Servant's brawn, Waver knew he had this in the bag.
The chant for the summoning is done. And from there the light that came from the summoning circle brightened up. Lips going upward further, Waver knew that his time for victory is now.
"Good for nothing, lousy, son of a-" Muttering some curses and a few profanities, Waver finally managed to get down from the building he was on. Taking the mundane way of using the latter steps while embarrassingly avoiding the stairs of the man watering his plants in the neighboring building. Dang it!
Waver should have known using a ratty old blanket as a catalyst wouldn't have gotten him a superior Servant as he expected. Instead, getting a guy with a red cape who didn't even listen to him. Especially one who didn't even seem to know how to act like a Servant.
'Still, at least he's going after a Servant to deal with them.' Walking towards the construction site where the hidden agents already set up a bounded field combined with the police keeping out, Waver looked around. "Hmn." He didn't see any Masters, but he kept his guard and got ready to use his Command Spells just in case. If he was attacked, he could call on Saber to be right by his side.
Although even Waver couldn't deny what he was doing was a bit…risky.
'I really should be somewhere else. Somewhere safe.' Going to a battlefield was foolhardy. Especially since two Servants were going to fight. 'But…' This was also a good opportunity to see just what Saber is capable of.
As Waver walked through the bounded field and checked his back, he cursed that he didn't bring a familiar. Going through the locked fences was so much trouble. He could of course just bust through them. While not on the level of his jerk teacher or some of the higher ranked students, Waver knew a few spells that could help him out.
But doing so might reveal his position to the enemy. 'Better conserve my mana anyway.' Because Waver could actually feel it. A drain on his mana. Different from just supporting Saber though, instead being an active drain like someone turned the faucet on just a bit more. Plus, if he listened closely enough, Waver could hear noise.
"He must have met the enemy." With a small gulp, Waver pressed onward and did his best to push down any hesitation. Walking towards a container, Waver looked around cautiously and began climbing up on the container, only to fall flat on his butt. "Ow." He let out a manly ow of course.
Rubbing his behind, Waver then saw something crawling nearby.
"!" Raising his hand, Waver chanted a few words. A spell that drew in the weak-minded. Nothing that would work on an actual person. But a small animal, well-
"Squee."
-it worked adequately.
"Hehe." With a small chant to connect him with the little critter, Waver sent the little mouse, rat, watever, to go to the source of the noise. Overriding its animal instincts while giving Waver the ability to see through the animals eyes.
"Now, I just need to hide." Looking around, Waver then saw a nearby building that had been evacuated due to the collapse of the construction site. Grinning, Waver then ran towards it to make it so that he wouldn't be caught. All while his new familiar got closer and closer to the source of the noise. The sounds of clanging and shouting being heard with the little rodent climbing up some broken wood before making way to the source of the ruckus.
"-ay!" Coming into sight, the rodent with its shared vision then saw it. The fight that already began.
"Sqee!" A force of wind hit the small rodent as it almost fell over. The cause, the impact between none other than Rider slamming her blade into Saber's own weapon. Through the rodent's eyes, Waver gasped at the sight he was seeing.
"Oh boy!" All while Saber was gasping for air. "Just what are you made of?!"
Not bothering to answer, Rider came forward and released a flurry of her blade at her enemy. Having no intention to reply to small talk. Letting her sword do the talking for her.
"Woah. Oh my! Ahh!" With training and careful eyeing, Saber managed to parry each strike his fellow Servant threw at him. His blade clanging against his enemy's own weapon and diverting her attacks so that it didn't slice through him like bread.
'Just who is this girl?' Saber thought as he stepped backwards avoiding a horizontal strike that would have separated his head from his neck. His foe, the young girl, blinked. As if she was surprised he managed to do it.
She then snarled, making Saber gulp.
More so when she suddenly vanished, with Saber unable to follow where she went.
"Hu!?" Yet years of fighting and facing deadly foes told him otherwise. It was brief, but Saber noticed a shadow covering the ground below him, with the wind above whistling. "No you don't!" Turning around, Saber raised his blade and blocked a blow that would have cut through him vertically this time. Cutting him into two Saber halves.
"!" For Rider, now she looked really surprised.
Up until now, she had only seen weak humans who were nothing like her or her rival back home. Humans who didn't seem all that impressive. To the point where they could easily be slaughtered with them unable to do a thing.
'But this man…?' Touching the ground, Roze moved quickly to try and stab him through the chest. Lunging forward for the attack. Saber grunted but stepped back and stepped to the side, Rider moving past him from her missed strike. Baffling how someone who was slower than her could even avoid her attacks.
'Man that was close!' To Saber, this was just another death attack that he needed to avoid. Not that it was easy, mind you. However, 'That girl,' with narrow eyes, Saber saw the way his enemy adjusted her legs along with the rotation of her hips. 'She's practically yelling out her next moves.'
That speed of hers was dangerous, while such a small frame held more strength that what he expected. But-
Shing!
-she was inexperienced!
Blocking a blow from her sword, while feeling his feet being forced back, Saber felt confident that he could at least predict her attacks to a certain degree. Her body language is that of an amateur. If anything, it made him wonder who even trained her seeing as whatever was going on, it was her speed and strength that was the threat here. Not her swordplay.
'Not that this makes this any easier.' Saber winced as the girl now struck with even greater fury. Her blade becomes blurry with Saber unable to even draw his second sword due to having to focus on parrying the girl's attacks. 'This is why I hate fighting stronger beings!' They always made him sweat with worry.
Not helping that the girl seemed to be slowly overcoming him. His eyes slowly being unable to catch the girl's movement.
Slck!
"!" A part of his armor was now cut. Nothing serious, but she managed to catch his blind spot. The girl smiled for just a moment before resuming the attack. Steel meeting…whatever steel her blade was made from. Yet from the noise produced from the two blades locking heads, Saber could feel the strain on his weapon. Whatever material the girl's own blade is made from, it was clearly superior to his own sword.
At the rate she was going, there was a genuinely good chance she could shatter his weapon. 'It's happened before.' Saber felt a familiar sting from the cut on his eye. 'It can happen again.'
He needed to think of a way to win and fast.
"Die!" Because it seems the girl was getting more upset.
Gritting her teeth, Rider couldn't believe that some no-name was lasting this long against her. She was supposed to be the ultimate weapon against Spectra. Yet she couldn't defeat some guy in a silly cape and old-timey armor. It was…frustrating.
As the man parried another attack of hers, for just the briefest of moments, Roze considered the possibility of using her Noble Phantasm. Use the fire power that came from it to annihilate this insolent human and the entire area for good measure.
It would be easy. Nothing was really stopping her. Even if her so-called Master asked her to stop, she wouldn't. Eliminating the enemy was more important than striking in the shadows like a runt. 'Yes.' Roze affirmed to herself as she felt her attacks being parried once again. 'Better to kill this man quickly to move on to the others.'
Putting some effort, Rider slashed at her foe, who blocked the strike but was flung backward from the force of her blow. The human yelped as he felt himself lift up into the air. Though his feet managed to find landing as he then looked up to see Rider standing still, not even attacking.
He then felt a pressure coming off of her which worried him.
'Saber!'
"Yah!" Saber looked around, startled. "Who's there?!"
'It's me, Saber. Your Master.' His Master? Oh, right. The small boy who acted as if he were a man. He did mention something about mental communication if he recalled. He just didn't expect it. Still, it seems his Master was contacting him for a reason, and not a good one. 'Eliminate Rider, now!'
"Huh?" Uh oh. Did the boy realize he wasn't trying to go for the kill? Granted, it wasn't as if Saber wanted to die, and was fighting seriously. But he couldn't deny he was holding back on lethal blows since he still wanted to talk to the enemy.
The urgency of his Masters tone said otherwise. 'Eliminate her quickly! Her magical energy is rising. I think she's going to use her Noble Phantasm!'
"!" That wasn't good. Not at all. Saber couldn't deny he was still getting used to the fact that he was in a 'Class', had these weird things called Personal Skills, and so on. But from what his Master told him pre-hand, one of the dangers a Servant has is a Nobler Phantasm. A crystallization of their legend that could have powerful effects. Usually in the form of a deadly attack that could kill their enemy.
With Rider doing just that.
In a span of a second, Saber realized he couldn't hold back anymore. He couldn't just hope to battle with only defense, or hope his foe would stop and let him talk. No. At this point, he had no choice but to go in with the mindset to kill.
'Any less and I might die.' Saber, a marauder in life before he joined the military, faced many foes who wouldn't have hesitated to cut him down. Only surviving thanks to luck, determination, and giving it his all. 'Shit.' Time to start giving it his all.
Not desiring a second death, Saber got into a stance, readying himself. The girl was emitting powerful energy, but she was standing still. He needed to attack now!
"Apologies." Saber muttered, truly having desired to just talk to the girl. It seems it wasn't so. "I'll make it quick." Saber took a step forward, focusing himself. In an instant one could feel a spike in his own mana as he readied to unleash his attack. With Roze either not noticing or caring.
Then tendrils of metal came from the sky with sharp ends at the tips of the tentacles. With each aimed for the vital spots of the two Servants who had been ready to unleash their final attacks.
"!" Both noticed and instantly moved away.
"Kck!" Though Saber was a step slower. One of the tendrils grazed through his left thigh, tearing through the armor with ease with the Servant gritting his teeth. For Rider, she escaped unharmed though glowering at how her attack was interrupted. For who would be so bold to do so.
The tendrils then retract away, where Saber noticed that they came from the ground itself.
"Waver Velvet. Oh my dear boy. Really?"
"Ugh!?" Inside the building, flinching, Waver suddenly felt a cold chill fall upon him. It happened so fast that Waver momentarily assumed he was hit with a curse.
"To think. You have dared to enter this tournament. And by taking what was rightfully mine."
But no. Waver knew it wasn't a curse that afflicted him. Instead, it was the fear of who was talking to him and everyone else here. A shiver down the base of his spine as he realized that he had come.
"What a shame."
Up above, hidden with magecraft, the mage known as Kayneth El-Melloi could only grasp his blonde hair with a sigh. "It seems a peaceful banal life just isn't meant for you." With a grin, Kayneth chuckled. "I suppose now I should show you a battle between two mages goes."
It all made sense now. The disappearance of his catalyst, which forced him to get a new one. One that didn't even get him the Servant he desired.
'Yet an efficient one nonetheless.' Kayneth thought while observing the two Servants down below. Two fellow brutes that hadn't an inch of class. One, some man that certainly wasn't Iskandar and looked like a peasant in armor. The other, a strange girl but looked like a brat.
While they seemed adequate enough, especially the girl, they were nothing to his Servant.
Appearances and origins aside, Kayneth couldn't deny that as surprising as his Servant is, it was a Servant easy to command. No hesitation. No disobedience. Just following his words without complaint while having very good stats. Aside from the…unusual Class it had, likely forced into it, his Servant would kill the others. As such-
"Now then. Get them my Servant!" Kayneth grinned while glancing at the poor hiding spot young Waver hid. Once Saber was defeated, he was next.
"!" Saber and Rider momentarily stopped fighting, instead readying themselves for the newcomer. Instantly the two felt the signature of a Servant, which proceeded to burst out rather violently from the ground itself. Dust and dirt rising from the sudden entrance and obscuring their view of the new Servant.
Holding his sword close, with Rider mimicking him, the two then observed to see just what had attacked them as the dust settled. Which then revealed…
"...the hell?" Saber blinked as in front of him was something that didn't even look like a Servant.
"..." What was in front of him and his foe was some kind of…blob? A blob with little spike protruding out of the top half which looked like a shiny mace. Even Rider looked a bit stunned, unsure of what she was even facing.
It wasn't just them that felt this way too.
'This is becoming unusual.' Kiritsugu, after rapidly coming to the construction site as fast as he could, was hidden with a rifle, gazing at the battlefield with his scope. Also surprised by the Servant that El-Melloi claimed was his.
It looked more like a familiar than an actual Servant. Yet the magical signature was genuine.
"Well, it doesn't matter." Turning his rifle east, Kiritsugu had eyes on none other than Kayneth could end this before it even began. Kayneth may have hid himself with magecraft, but like most mages, was ignorant of technology's capability in spotting an enemy. Something Kiritsugu took advantage of.
"Maiya."
"Yes." Speaking elsewhere and through their own means of communicating, Kiritsugu contacted his ally.
"Can you spot Saber's Master?"
"No, unfortunately."
Shame. It would have been good to take down both Masters at the same time. Still, one is good enough, and from what Kiritsugu could tell, Saber wasn't as powerful as he seemed despite being in the supposed 'strongest' Class.
'But he is skilled.' Shown how Rider hadn't killed him yet.
Speaking of Rider, Kiritsugu's mouth thinned. Leaving Irisviel. Causing a scene. Fighting without even telling him. The Magus Killer knew that Rider felt off…But up until now, she never once disobeyed him. If anything, the only complaint she had was that there was nobody to fight back home.
'And she was just ready to use a Noble Phantasm considering the drain of mana she pulled on me.' How did Kiritsugu miss all these troublesome signs? Gripping the rifle, Kiritsugu narrowed his eyes. 'I'll deal with her later.' For now, Kiritsugu had a plan.
Let this strange Servant attack Saber and Rider, but then shoot the Master before the fight could even start. But just before he fired, he would inform Rider of what he would do. This way she will be prepared when the Servant vanishes, startling Saber, then allowing Rider to attack him when his guard is down.
"Maiya." Kiritsugu spoke again. "I'm about to fire. Get ready."
"I will."
Good. Because things might go bad if this doesn't go as predicted. The time was now. Kill Kayneth followed by his Servant, then have Rider kill what Kiritsugu assumed was Saber. One Master and two enemy Servants dead before things got worse while lessening the competition.
'And one step closer to the Grail.' With a finger on the trigger, Kiritsugu was just a second from ending Kayneth while informing Rider of his plan.
Bam!
Only for someone to burst through one of the set-up buildings in the area. The broken wood startling everyone again, with all eyes turned to the source of it.
"Hraaa…!" That someone being a tall and very well-armored woman who looked nothing less than intimidating. Breathing heavily as her eyes gazed at everybody in the construction sight. Where she then heard a single command.
"Berserker…Kill them all."
She lunged forward with a roar.
Guess the real fight starts now.
