Despite the tragic carnage unleashed upon the city being stopped, things in Fuyuki weren't going so well as any sane person would realize. While the hidden mystics of the world kept the truth hidden behind the veil, that didn't mean panic and suspicion weren't at play.
All across the city, many have already heard of the alleged terrorist attack that had happened in broad daylight, an attack that never should've happened. Involving much weaponry being used against the populace, destruction of the surrounding area and with the criminals in question apparently kidnapping people and (rumored) to have disposed of the bodies, never to be seen again. Naturally, this caused many to question if the military should come considering the state of emergency.
The police have stated however that they would instead rely on themselves, attempting to prove this fact by putting out more patrols with officers seen in many locations. While this did put the people at ease, by no means was the collective fear going away.
Many were already pointing out that with the past kidnappings, the collapse of a building under construction, and Fuyuki park being blown away, disaster after disaster seemed to keep coming. Already the people of Fuyuki were assuming the worst, with the sneaking suspicion that it wouldn't be long before the next catastrophe struck.
The question was, what would cause it?
Thankfully, for the better or worse, the true handlers of the situation were already on the case.
"I thank you all for coming. I admit, the past few events have been…harrowing." Inside the church, with bounded fields put up and secure at the moment, Risei was holding a different sort of meeting compared to the sermons he spoke of. Instead of preaching the ways of God, he spoke of mandates and rules of the war itself, with all that came willing to hear him out.
'Well, sort of.' As expected, instead of the seven Masters sitting down on the benches, there were small animals such as an owl, a rat, an insect of some kind, replacing their human masters. The church was stated to be a neutral free ground, meaning a Master could come here without any fear of harm befalling them. Though Risei supposed it's expected that none of the Masters would bother coming in person despite such claims. If anything, coming by themselves with no Servant with them, as the rules of the church claim, would be considered the height of foolishness in their eyes.
'Not that it matters, I suppose.' Clearing his throat, Risei decided to get to the point now before he lost their attention. Knowing that the only reason the Masters responded was because even they knew things weren't exactly good for all things hidden in the masquerade. Which included them.
Straightening his back, arms crossed behind his back, Risei said aloud, "As you are all well aware, recent actions have been less than ideal." Even if the Masters weren't here physically, Risei knew all of them were imagining events such as the construction site, the devastation to the Fuyuki park, and of the latest addition, an entire city block. Caused by a beast that was clearly summoned intentionally.
"I'm sure you may have noticed, but out of the seven, only six of you have arrived." Tokiomi and Kirei also sent in their own familiars, to play the part of ignorance. No need for anybody to know of their alliance as that'd cause all sorts of problems. All which was needed to also show that only six familiars have arrived, not seven. "I can only assume this means that the one who has yet to arrive did so on purpose. And for why, well…I imagine you can all make a good guess."
It was rare, but there was always the possibility of an amoral Master being chosen, a Master that cared very little about the act known as restraint. "At this very moment it's made clear that one of us has taken no interest in abiding by this Holy Grail War's rules. While the Church has managed to contain the…damage, even we cannot, could not, prevent the news from leaking out about the destruction caused alongside casualties."
Destroyed buildings, wrecked cars, the number of dead people, none so easily covered up, even with memory manipulation. If anything, trying to sweep the entire thing would be a fool's errand. The best thing to do was let the people know that something had occurred, but control the flow of information. Now all people knew was that a terrorist attack occurred.
"But we all know that if this happened before, it can happen again." With a tone that didn't betray the current mood, Risei said, "At this very moment I'm offering a deal to all listening." Lifting his right arm, Risei pulled back the sleeve to reveal a rather muscular arm that betrayed the image that he was a simple old man. However, the familiars' owners gazed at something else beyond his muscular arm.
What they looked at was none other than the countless Command Seals imprinted on Risei's own arm. More than the usual three, all brimming with mana. Command Seals of Masters who had quit the Holy Grail War and given them to the Overseer for safekeeping itself. In other words, a boon unlike any other for participants as all watching behind their familiars' eyes knew what the offer was.
"I'll make this very clear. The Master who caused this travesty doomed uninvolved lives pointlessly, and now risks the very exposure of magcraft. They need to be stopped." Even if only the familiars were here, it was easy to tell that all who commanded them understood Risei's words clearly. Excluding the offer Risei was giving them, everyone here was well aware that anything that threatened to reveal magecraft was a taboo nobody wanted to let out. For the consequences would be beyond catastrophic.
Which is why this needed to be dealt with sooner than later. "All fighting between one another must cease immediately. Instead, focus on taking down who we believe is Servant Assassin and their Master. Capture them, kill them, as long as you ensure they do no further harm, or unveil the truth of this war, anything is allowed. In return," Risei tapped the Command Seals on his arm. "I will grant a single Command Seal to the one who accomplishes the deed."
Handing out just one Command Seal at first glance seemed lacking in contrast to the job Risei handed out. But the overseer knew that the Masters would consider it worth it. After all, one Command Seal can change the tide of battle. Empower a Servant. Let them escape. And having more than just three would certainly be seen as invaluable.
"If you manage to kill Assassin on your own, then that is fine. But if any of you work together, those who contribute to this task will each be awarded." The owl ruffled its feathers. Risei knew why. Tokiomi was naturally a bit upset with this, more so considering his current circumstances. But, while Risei did wish to help his old friend, he must remain the facade of being neutral and keep his word.
"Any questions?" Risei asked. All the familiars left instead of staying, flapping their wings, crawling, not one stopping for anything further. The message was sent and all of them were prepared to do what they must. If not for the city, then for themselves and the prize Risei had offered.
Once they were all gone, Risei relaxed himself. At the very least the problem with Assassin should be dealt with soon. Though, speaking of Assassin, Risei was curious about one thing.
"You said the beast was connected to them." Primarily, of Lancer's report. Stepping from out the shadows, having hidden herself well from the familiars and any other prying eyes, Lancer smiled.
"I did." Next to Lancer was Kirei, the two having ensured nobody spotted them. After all, it wouldn't do if anybody saw Risei giving Kirei, his son and a Master, special privileges. Ushering them to sit, the two did so with Risei patiently waiting for an explanation.
"From what I witnessed, the beast was indeed being controlled by the Assassin." Lancer replied, glancing at Kirei who nodded.
Placing his hands on his lap, Kirei added, "It is a known fact that some Servants can summon familiars of their own. This is likely one of those categories, just unexpected in general." Risei understood why. As his dear son said, a Servant summoning a familiar of their own actually wasn't unusual. However, normally only Rider's are seen with such contracted beasts, and animals or some kind of phantasmal at that. Not whatever this creature was.
"If I might add," Lancer then continued, putting in more details. "I should also add that the beast, while I say it was 'controlled' by Assassin, it also felt as if it had its own will. With Assassin just watching it do whatever it wanted." If anything, the beast was like its own person.
"Hmm. I'm not sure if that's better or worse." Risei admitted. Thankfully, there was good news through all this. "At the very least, you claimed it was killed."
"Not killed." Lancer corrected, her hand brushing past her hair as she sat with manners. "I said it merely vanished. A Noble Phantasm I believe." Lancer shrugged, eyes portraying innocence. "For now, perhaps it should be considered as you modern day humans call it, 'MIA' I believe."
"Missing in Action. Perhaps for the best." Kirei couldn't deny that it was a suitable term for the creature. Better to believe it might return and prepare than believe it gone only to be caught off guard were it to return. With an unchanging expression, he said, "We should also have any of those affiliated with the church to keep an eye out as a precaution."
"An excellent idea, Kirei." Risei praised. "We cannot allow anything like this to occur again. To say we were fortunate would be a mistake. At this time, it was just that the truth hasn't been exposed." Kirei nodded. The Church, and by extension, all magecraft, has just avoided the worst case scenario, that being, the reveal of mystics. But if another attack were to happen, and they weren't quick enough, it would be safe to say any containment would be futile.
"I'll need to speak to our associates." Getting up to leave, Risei made his declaration on his next agenda. With the current state of affairs, it'd be quick if he just got straight to business. Plus, while this might sound a bit rude, he couldn't deal with any problems Tokiomi would likely express to him. "Stay safe my son." Risei told Kirei before he went past the door. "With the way things are now…I pray you'll avoid misfortune."
If Kirei had planned on saying anything, he lost his chances as Risei was gone now. Putting his duties ahead of him to ensure nothing went wrong any further for the Holy Grail War. Certainly a man who didn't take half-measures when it came to doing his job, all while having trust in Kirei himself.
After a moment of silence, Kirei stood. "I suppose we should meet Tokiomi." Kirei told Lancer, not sparing her a glance. "We may as well see if he has come up with a new plan. Or at the very least, if he has any suggestions for the current task at hand." After all, Tokiomi was indeed a true magus.
While a bit conceited in his planning skills, or snooty as the young kids might say it, Tokiomi also had standards for a magus. More so than most magus as Tokiomi did things with honor and in 'elegance'. As such, while Tokiomi would considerably be alright with human deaths to a decree, not being delusional or even fooling himself of what the war would entail, he wasn't foolish either. For he was the second owner of the city itself, and a man who dealt with those who would risk the status quo.
Not to mention that despite having no talent like his two daughters, Tokiomi rose in status and power through dedication and hard work. In this, Tokiomi could be considered a respected teacher and magus.
"Hm, should we?" Lancer seems to believe otherwise, as her words caused Kirei to pause.
Turning, he asked her, "What do you mean by that?"
"Exactly what I mean." With the tone of integrity, Lancer spoke as if her words were the full truth in itself. "Your teacher, is he not your enemy?"
"By the rules, he technically would be. But we are under an alliance, meaning we can help each other out with none the wiser."
"Hmm." Lancer didn't seem convinced. Raising a finger, she said, "Yet from what I've seen, it's only been you and your dear father doing all the helping. Tell me, Master," Lancer's eyes were half-closed. "What has Tokiomi done for us? An alliance is a two-way street, as you modern people put it, no?"
Narrowing his eyes, Kirei opened his mouth, ready to counter her words. But once he opened his mouth, nothing but his own breath escaped past his lips. Shutting it, Kirei then found himself thinking just a little. Reviewing what he knew.
'Father and I are helping Tokiomi to allow him to win the Holy Grail, thus we are giving him our full support.' A sign that was evident by Kirei somehow gaining Command Seals when he didn't even once consider joining the war, let alone know its existence. As Tokiomi told him, this was a sign that the Holy Grail must want him to win, as all other contestants would likely wish for something foolish or dangerous.
As such, they have supported Tokiomi all the way. 'We have private communications to speak without the others noticing, father is bending the rules a bit for his sake, and I haveallowed myself and Lancer to serve under him.' But for what Tokiomi did for them was…
"...no matter." Kirei replied after a moment of thinking. "In the end, we are simply helpers to Tokiomi. Better he gets the Holy Grail and nobody else."
"Even though he has no Servant?" Lancer didn't appear swayed by any of Kirei's words. Looking more doubtful if anything. "In the end, can we claim that he will win when his own Servant has left him, leaving him with nothing."
"That's why we are here. To ensure he doesn't fail." Kirei shot back, with a little more force than he expected.
"Mmmm. But what about you?" Lancer replied back coolly. "What about your wish?"
"I have no wish."
"Truly?" Leaning her head forward, Lancer said, "But I thought the Holy Grail chose only those who had a desire? A human who desires a wish to grant their hopes and dreams."
"I have no such wish." Kirei curtly repeated himself. Dispassionately saying, "I only hold these Command Seals to help Tokiomi, just as my father aids him. That is all my purpose is." And the most fitting since he had nothing else going for him.
Wishes. Wants. Desires. Nothing had ever stirred the emotion of interest in him. Not love. Not joy. Not…anything. Even getting married did little for him. The only thing that got him feeling something was….
Bodies were everywhere. Through Lancer's eyes, he saw the horrified expressions many corpses had when killed by the beast in the city. And through her eyes, Kirei's founds his very lips-
Biting his lip, Kirei pushed aside the memory. It was irrelevant. Unimportant. If anything, just thinking about it was sinful itself. Best to forget it altogether.
Behind him, Lancer gave him an intrigued stare with her lips moving upward for a moment. "Very well," She then spoke, speaking back in her usual tone. "If you truly desire to help Tokiomi, then I shall support you all the way. Though since we have time, tell me, Master, how do you feel?"
"...about what?" Kirei asked, looking at her.
"You know," Lancer leaned her chin down on her arm, cupping it. "Of the massacre in the city. You saw through my eyes after all."
"And it was horrible." Kirei immediately responded. "For a Master to risk exposing the masquerade. The fact that the Church must work tenaciously to cover it all up. Not to mention the damage concurred. Tragic, truly."
"Yes. Tragic indeed." Lancer's lips started to twitch. "And how do you feel about the people's deaths?"
"...I said it was horrible." Kirei repeated himself, confused why his Servant was asking again.
"Really. You did?" She then innocently asked, "But you only spoke of damages to the city and the near exposure of magecraft." She spoke almost accusingly to him. Adding, "You never told me how you felt about the dead, and as a servant of God, surely you must feel the need to confess how you feel, no."
She waved a hand to the statue of Jesus himself. "As they say, God is willing to listen to all." A finger then lazily pointed at herself. "And I will not judge you for what you have to say in front of him or this church." Like so, Lancer then waited for Kireis confession.
Only for silence to reign with no words to escape Kirei's lips. The man just gazed with the same dull expression. Like this was nothing new to him.
"..." Only for the smallest of trembles on Kirei's brow to be seen. His mouth almost quivering in response to the words spoken by Lancer.
For nothing she said was untrue, nor blasphemous. If anything, one might even say it would be good for Kirei to state his thoughts. Sharing one's troubles or thoughts is a step in the right direction for one's mental health. And in this room, now would be the perfect time to say it all and confess.
Breathing in sharply, Kirei said, "We have work to be done. We should proceed to do that instead." That was his 'confession', as Kirei then walked away from the room. Not even noticing that his steps were much louder, as if he was trying to escape from something.
"Oh." Or even someone, as Lancer's lips were even wider than before. It was gone soon, as if it never existed. Standing, she then followed close behind Kirei, though easily noticed how her Master was walking in bigger strides, as if trying to keep away from her.
How….cute.
Lancer found her steps to be much lighter. All while behind her the shadow seemed to mismatch her own form momentarily. With something akin to wings spread on each side of her shadow, which soon vanished.
A trick of the light was all it was.
"Your saying Saber wished to make an alliance with us?" Outside in the open, away from public crowds, both Irisviel and Rider walked alongside one another as Rider gave her recollection of what she knew from before. Information that would be useful to tell Kiritsugu. In particular, of what an enemy Servant, Saber, had offered them.
"Correct." Not missing a beat, stoic as always, Rider told Irisviel of the information she had. "Saber had apparently been nearby in search of us to make an alliance. Something that I suppose is…tactical." The word left Rider's mouth as if it were difficult to say.
All the same, it made Irisviel smile.
"Hm. Is it?" It seemed someone really wasn't as emotionless as they seemed, if the way Rider spoke just now was any indicator. 'Maybe she's like Kiri. Someone who just has trouble opening up how they really feel.'
"I'm just glad that you had help against whatever that thing was." Irisviel saw the way Rider stiffened, with her lips turning to a frown. Breathing in, Irisviel supposed she couldn't blame the girl.
From the way she described it during their talk, that beast that attacked was outright invulnerable to everything thrown at it. No damage done. Barely capable of even leaving lasting damage. Not even two Servants managed to change the tide of battle, in spite of the fact that Servants should be stronger than most life-forms in general.
'And only this shape-shifting Servant managed to leave damage to it.' That most likely had been a result of a skill. Same with the beast, as it must have had some unique trait as well. One bypassed by the Servant at the construction site through some ability it must have, leaving it vulnerable after it was harmed.
"I will not let that thing get the best of me again." Declaring her intent aloud, Irisviel saw the stern gaze in the female Servant's eyes. A form of promise to not allow herself to be as ineffective as before. One Irsiviel could understand, as to a degree, she also felt that way when it involved Kiritsugu.
"I'm sure you won't." Irisviel told her. "And you know, I imagine working with someone, even if temporarily, could do wonders in," Now, how to say this without potentially setting Rider off. "Making things more…easy, in dealing with the other Servants." Rider gave Iriisviel a brief glance, saying nothing in response.
It was rather awkward, but at the very least it seemed Rider wasn't set off from her words. If anything, she seemed to be thinking of something else. Her thoughts elsewhere which left Irisviel incapable of doing much other than walk with Rider on the rather breezy day.
At the very least, it did give Irisviel time to also think on what Rider told her. Primarily on how worrisome that a monster, one potentially related to a Servant in this war, could challenge a Servant like it did with Rider and Saber. Both of whom were quite powerful in their own right. If anything, a team-up with two Servants should have killed the beast where it stood.
Instead, it held its ground and managed to push the two Servants near the brink of defeat. Granted, perhaps if they used their Noble Phantasms that might have changed things. But…
'For now, I'm just grateful they're okay. Both of them.' Plus, with Saber willing to ally with them, that just meant one Servant that they didn't have to worry about. At least for the moment anyway.
Still, it was worrisome that such a creature was allowed out in the first place. And while Rider claimed it somehow vanished, there was no telling if it might return and finish what it started. Thankfully, it seems that the potential threat of the beast may end soon, as Irisviel had spotted magical flares coming from the direction of the church just a while ago.
Likely the overseer calling all the Masters, meaning Kiritsugu will send a familiar to scope out the meeting in his place. All for what will be the talks involving the beast with intentions to likely kill it permanently if it was still alive alongside whoever had summoned it.
As Irisviel thought further of this, suddenly, Rider spoke to her. "Hey, woman." It bugged Irisviel a bit that Rider never bothered to remember her name. Still, she answered anyway.
"Yes."
Instead of answering, Rider said nothing. Being patient, Irisviel waited as she noted how Rider seemed to struggle just a little in what she must have wanted to say. "I…" She began, not looking at Irisviel. Coughing purposely before resuming. "I mean…what I want to…well…"
Turning her own head upward, Rider gave a long sigh before looking straight again. "What I want to say is…do humans die painfully?"
"..." Now it was Irisviel to go quiet. Not out of malice or to hold back, but merely because the question was a little…out there, in a way. Did humans die painfully? That was certainly a more…introspective question than she expected. It even made Irisviel question why Rider even asked such a thing.
"...ah." Only to recall just what Rider had faced earlier ago. "It's because of what the creature did, isn't it?"
Rider's hands seemed to shake. Her stoic face appeared as if it might break. Emotions that were trying to get out but kept aback by the person in question. It was…something Irisviel was all too familiar with. Primarily, with Kiritsugu who did all sorts of horrible things…and did his best to never let it show on his face.
No matter how much his heart wanted to let loose those feelings.
With a sudden exhale, Rider seemed to be staring at something that wasn't quite there. Something else altogether. Before she could say anything, Irisviel spoke in her stead. "Not all humans die painfully."
Rider turned to Irisviel, who continued to speak. "Some humans die peacefully. With friends. Family. Or at least with some measure of peace in them. But others," Irisviel gave a rather sad look to Rider. "Well, you saw as much in that encounter, didn't you?"
"...I did." It left a…bad taste in her mouth. All with the realization that such a horrible thing was something she had tried to do before. To Raye when they first met. With her declaration that she'd kill her by slicing her apart. The thought of doing that to her, with this knowledge was more than a little…nauseating.
"It's tragic, I suppose. The way one can die." While Irisviel wasn't a human, a homunculus that just looked like one, it wasn't as if she was blind to the ways humans could die. Why, she nearly met with a painful death of her own.
The bitter cold.
The way her skin felt it would fall off.
Her body lost any warmth it had as she laid on the cold ground.
It was only thanks to Kiritsugu's kindness did she not die with regrets in her heart. So, Irisviel could certainly say that people can die painfully and with regrets, seeing as she had nearly reached the same point as them.
"And that's why Kiritsugu is here." Facing Rider and meeting her in the eye, Irisviel said, "He wants to make a world where nobody dies horribly the way those people did today. From beasts. From violence. From murders. From wars. None of that, or anything related to them in any way. All he wants is for people, when they die…to die in peace, from living satisfying lives."
Irisviel knows Rider is having difficulty with Kiritsugu. For one reason or the other, Rider and Kiritsugu were just so…incompatible than what was expected. But maybe if the two could learn the other's motive, their reasoning…then perhaps they can start working together.
"Hah." So it was very unexpected when Rider, who moments earlier looked like a girl looking lost, reverted to her cold, emotionless face without a beat. The transformation was so sudden, Irisviel felt herself stepping backward.
"Him. He wants to…make the world a better place?" Her red eyes seemed to pierce through Irisviel, as if expecting a joke that would never come. "Him. The man…the 'human', that demanded I kill someone who was helping me…for peace." A small chuckle escaped her lips. Mockingly at that, with a smile to boot.
Irisviel couldn't help but feel a little angry at that. The way Rider just so easily…dismissed Kiritsugu's ideal. His wish. "Yes." She told Rider, a bit more sternly than her usual gentle tone. "Kiritsugu, your Master, truly wants to make the world a better place. And this Holy Grail War is his chance to do it. To achieve that wish."
"Really? How admirable." The sarcasm wasn't missed from Rider's voice. The air around Rider grew more stiff and rigid, almost as if the weather was changing. "Hm. I see. Well, I suppose I will have to kill Saber eventually. So I guess it's understandable." The smile then went away.
"Ahhh. Strange how a human can make such pragmatic decisions… like a machine. Like Zard." Raising a brow, Irisviel became confused at the mention of this 'Zard'. Also, what did she mean by machine?
If Irisviel had intended to ask, she wouldn't get a chance as Rider was suddenly in her futuristic armor. Where, without even letting Irisviel have a chance to talk, all she got was, "Tell my Master I'll be out for a bit." She turned away from Irisviel. "I need time to think." She then leapt away and entered spiritual form, nowhere to be seen.
All alone once more, Irisviel stared at the sky where Rider had left. Now only pondering one thing. "...just, who are you?" And more importantly than that, what kind of life did Rider even live?
Hidden in the shadows, the strange Servant that took the place of Caster slithered across the ground as it crawled to a building. Making its way to the top before it then took its default form that was similar to a mace at the top of the building. Why it was there, well, it should be obvious.
"Attempt to locate any residual mana and venture out for any trail that may lead to Assassin." In his base of operations, away from the panicking city, Kayneth was already making his move.
It was to be expected. After all, the prize of another Command Seal was a very tempting one. Just having an additional one could change the tide of battle if done right. Of course, while the prize was the goal, that didn't mean Kayneth was oblivious to the reasoning behind such an offer.
"If by chance you detect the Master of Assassin, deal with them." Kayneth was a magus as well. A proper one as one should remember. And the thought that some unsophisticated simple-minded fool nearly ruined everything did in fact boil his blood.
Magecraft is an art. Something sacred, to be upheld. A gift for those like him to cultivate, even if it was degrading with each passing year. Which made it all the more important to protect such secrets and ensure nothing could harm the system as a whole.
A fool that threatened such a system was an enemy. No, worse than that. An invalid. An error. One that must be cleansed for daring to harm the system painstakingly made by magus everywhere who used said system to accomplish their goals and dreams. And as a high-standing magus, Kayneth felt more than obligated to terminate such an error for daring to use their foolishness in exposing the truth of the world.
Something he believed the other magus felt, and were undoubtedly doing their sworn duty in dealing with this matter as he would alongside their Servants. Not that he wanted them to kill the mangy fool and his Servant first, of course.
Hehehe. Only one Master deserved the Command Seals the overseer offered. And that would be him.
With a chuckle, Kayneth focused his connection to 'see' through Caster. Granted, that was actually rather impossible seeing as the Servant had no eyes to observe with. As such, the next best thing was to just use a familiar to follow alongside his Servant and use that to observe his surroundings.
'Truly a mark of my intelligence.' Kayneth thought as he felt himself pose a little.
"Ugh." All while his dear fiancé Sola watched with her eyes rolling.
"Hm. Is something wrong, my dear." Kayneth asked as if he were a college student asking his crush for their feelings. A gentlemanly way, might he add.
"I'm just wondering just how a 'genius'," She made quote marks with her fingers, which stung a little. "Like you, is suddenly thinking you'll find the Master of Assassin in one day. Who, might I add, has a Servant that can conceal themselves without problem."
"Simple, my dear," Kayneth said, ignoring her playful remarks at him. Just a sign she was playing hard to get and only spoke such 'insults' to hide her shyness. "While it is true that Assassin is difficult to find, their Master, not so much." With the eagerness of his inner teen, Kayneth joyfully explained himself.
"For you see, the average human won't emit mana as they are utterly incapable of doing so, due to lacking the knowledge magus generally have. Why, even civilians who somehow manage to form magic circuits at birth will find it difficult. And even if they could, their mana output would be weak, very weak." Something that was an embarrassment in truth.
Oh, not that Kayneth could blame them of course. After all, it was just that those like him had a very special education. One that elevated them above the hallmarking that was humanity. The enlightened, and the not-so-enlightened.
"But a Master on the other hand, someone who will obviously have magic circuits, will have no choice but to put them to use." To feed their Servants and keep them in existence. "All I need to do is find someone with signs that their own mana is being used and, walla, I found our target."
"And if they're not the target?" Sola grunted.
Kayneth shrugged. "Then a small but easily forgettable mistake." It wasn't exactly impossible for Kayneth to get the wrong person. Granted, he won't, but even if he did kill someone unintentionally, so what. As long as it didn't expose the truth, then all was fine. Encouraged, even.
Certainly, Kayneth wasn't a barbarian, but he'd kill if he had to. With the first on the list being the Master of Assassin.
"And with Caster having the ability to do what those other weak Servants couldn't do, my victory is assured." Kayneth laughed at his own brilliance. Confidence at its finest. Not even realizing how much Sola just made a face of one that had no confidence in their partner.
Still, the fact was that Kayneth was indeed doing something to act. Granted, night time is approaching, which could make the search more difficult. If anything, Kayneth may have to turn in soon if he must. He couldn't win a war without good rest, along with good food.
"Hm, may be best to-oh."Kayneth then stopped himself from commanding Caster to return. Instead, more interested in what he just learned, or saw in this case. "Now what have we here?" Sola, turning towards him, now looked interested.
"Did you find Assassin?"
"No. I didn't." Kayneth continued to smirk. "But I think I found something just as good instead." Through the eyes of his familiar, a small pigeon which nobody would even think twice to look at, its head leaned forward while Caster stayed close to it. Observing from the rooftop above.
Where in the dark alleyway, away from the normal people, Berserker stood with a sword in hand and her unconscious Master in the other.
We finally see Berserker again, and it seems she's done something to her Master. Then again, this might have been inevitable since Kariya DID interrupt her battle with a dragon, for his safety obviously, but Berserker's aren't rational beings with such excuses.
All in the meantime Lancer is subtly asking Kirei some personal questions while Rider just can't seem to like Kiritsugu at all.
