Kagome blinked as she opened her eyes to see a familiar yet unfamiliar ceiling above her. It left her feeling a bit disconnected since she had been asleep when the powers that be flung her into another new life. But then again, it was what it was.

Carefully and slowly, she rolled over and sat up as she allowed her mind to filter through the information of this life since she was iskeai'd as a child but an adult. And Kagome felt her eyebrows slowly climb to her hairline at what she recalled.

She shook her head as her arm snapped out, and her hand smashed the button on her alarm clock. She had been sent to a modern world similar to earth and was in a place similar to China in 2020. And to make it all better, she was of mixed nationality and had run away from her home, Country J, to Shalnark about five years ago.

Glancing at her alarm clock, Kagome mentally grumbled as she got up to get ready to work. It was only five-thirty in the morning, yet she had to get to the office as it was the middle of the week, and she had to deliver the data for the current project she was helping to manage. And she knew she worked for a company run by one of the more prominent and elder families of Shalnark.

Two years ago, Said family went through serious drama with the main family's second and third-generation heirs. Not that she had lived through it, but she recalled all the essential parts from when the Second son's daughter, who had been adopted by the Eldest son by word of the Head of the family and became General Manager (then deputy Chief), to the legitimate lineal son being found by said daughter, Zhou Yulin, to two marriage happening on the same day through the divorce of the third son of Elder Zhao, and so on.

She worked under Director Zhao Shunchang as his lead Project Manager. Kagome had a faint yet distinct dual impression of the man. It was neither good nor bad. He was a fair man, quiet, and mostly introverted. More so after his divorce from a crazy bitch who was sitting in prison, rotting away from her several attempts at premeditated murder and kidnapping of an infant at birth.

"Come in."

Taking a deep breath, folder in hand, Kagome entered Director Zhao's office and closed the door softly. She stood there, not moving or making a sound as she waited. Director Zhao was focused on reading something(probably a document) on the computer screen. His face was pale, lips showing a deep pink that bordered on red as his dark eyes flicked back and forth.

She wasn't too shocked that he was a good-looking man, not with his lineage, and seeing many of the other men who had also come from noble or wealthy backgrounds (in this world) meant having the best of the gene pool in the looks and intelligence department. Whether that was IQ or EQ varied.

"Sorry, Ms. Higurashi," Director Zhao said when he finally looked at her. "Where is the data for the project?"

Letting a smile appear, Kagome walked to the edge of his desk and handed him the folder. Standing there, she waited as he flipped through the papers to read what was compiled before making any notations for her to review later. It was just the initial date for another Hotel in the chain the General Manager his niece had established after getting her position.

Kagome couldn't help but recall seeing Zhao Youlin up close a few times. And her 'prior' self seeing the faint halo of her soul (though not knowing what it was) and seeing two sets of occurring memories. Kagome knew that Zhao Youlin had her soul fill the shell she was in after death, which means that Zhao Youlin's body's original soul had left after death. It was a rare coincidence, but it happened.

"Ms. Higurashi?"

Blinking and feeling a bit of heat creep up her neck at being caught zoning out, Kagome looked at Director Zhao. She noted his eyes crinkled at the corners in amusement while his face remained impassive.

"Sorry," she muttered as her head dropped a bit.

"It is fine; I am not chastising you," Director Zhao said. "I have circled the main parts that your team needs to review and find ways to fix for this project even to meet the proposal stage. I believe you will do your best like always, Ms. Higurashi."

Lifting her head, Kagome looked at him and smiled as he returned the folder. Once she held it securely, she gave him a polite bow and left the office.

Zhao Shunchang stared at his office door and pondered about his section's Project Manager. Over the past few years, the other areas of Zhao Corporation heads approached him to poach her. Hell, he had seen them directly ask her and be shot down.

She was such a young and polite young woman. She showed him great respect and was damn good at her job at a young age. And he couldn't help but feel comfortable around her, unlike other women. It amazed him that she showed no interest in him, let alone his family and their assets.

It had been two and half years since he found his wife of twenty years had lied to him about her feelings, and their son (another man's son), all for the sake of trying to be close to his eldest brother, Zhao Shunrong. That whole scenario devastated him and left him emotionally despondent. His ex-wife, Sun Fengzhi, had been his first love. He had endured patiently and silently (out of his love for her) the abuse, verbal, mental, and emotional; she had dumped on him. Same with her son, Zhao Yifei.

Leaning back, Zhao Shunchang recalled the topic his father brought up each time he saw him. He wasn't getting younger; he was already thirty-nine and a divorcee. It was a fact that many had approached him and his father with the intent of marrying him after the first year of divorce. But he hadn't felt the need, yet he was responsible to his family (whether he had a child) due to appearances and the upper social circle.

Letting the sunlight filtering in from the partially closed blinds warm the top of his head, Zhao Shunchang let his mind go back to Ms. Higurashi and why she never transferred out of his area no matter what she was offered.

Kagome smiled as she sat down with her co-workers for lunch. Director Zhao provided it. He had been pleased after she'd given the completed Project proposal to take to the General Manager and President. They immediately called a board meeting, and it was given the green light. It allowed her and the rest of the team to feel happy about their three months of hard work.

During that time, Kagome found she interacted increasingly with Director Zhao. And not by her own choice but his. He was a shy and introverted man. But he was respectful of her and treated her with a polite distance due to the station both inside and outside work. It was refreshing, considering some of her past lives had been in the pits with assholes who only saw either benefit or were misogynistic pigs.

"Hey, Kagome, have you heard the rumors floating around?"

Snorting loudly, she looked at her co-worker Chao Minglin and raised an eyebrow. She had heard that the patriarch of the Zhao family had been sending Director Zhao on blind dates. Hell, she had even been there when one of them had called Director Zhao as they were discussing some of the final changes for the project. That woman sounded like a stalker demanding to know what the Director had been doing and who he was with after only a single date.

"Yes, but it is better if we don't get caught gossiping about our boss, Ms. Chao," she said with a small smile.

The look she got spoke volumes as the topic was dropped.

"Alright, everyone, after lunch, you can leave early from work," Director Zhao called out over the in-office Canteen. "President Zhao already approved it since you all worked so hard."

The loud cheer made Kagome roll her eyes as she focused on her pork bun and deep-fried chicken feet. But she couldn't help but smile as she saw her boss smiling happily about something. The man did deserve a bit of sunshine in his life.

He looked at the only person left on his floor, and seeing her there wasn't a surprise. It was a common site after he had taken notice of her that day she had delivered the original data and draft for the Hotel Project.

"Ms. Higurahi, are you going to stay much later?" He called out to her, watching as she jumped and squeaked softly.

"Director Zhao!"

He couldn't help but smile at her reaction and how red her face got in a few seconds. Seeing such a young woman reacting so honestly after being startled was adorable.

"Well?"

The way she fidgeted before nodding her head in answer had him walking toward her desk. It was one of the quirks she had found interesting over the years. She had always told everyone that even though she had the degree and experience that allowed her to be a Project Manager, she wasn't above them and thus didn't need her own office.

"What are you working on?" He asked as she stopped by her desk, staying where he couldn't see her computer screen.

"Oh, databasing to help a friend in accounting, as that was my minor in college."

The way she spoke softly as her eyes darted from the computer screen to him and back again while her fingers typed or moved the mouse where she needed it.

"Okay, but be careful, so you don't get in trouble. He said that "accounting and finance are different from our area, and I don't want you to be in trouble with the higher-ups," he said.

The smile Kagome flashed him had him pausing and starting. She had many sides and different smiles that he'd noted, but this one was different.

"Don't worry, Director Zaho, I am an old hand for CYAing myself," Kagome said as she narrowed her eyes and did something. "I have made a hard and soft copy of the original data spreadsheet I was sent and had my computer recording everything I do as I go over the data analysis. Then I will make a finalized hard and soft save."

Zhao Shunchang was amazed at how thorough she was. But he didn't understand what Kagome meant by CYAing. And when he met her gaze, he heard her give a small snort-laugh indicating he showed his confusion.

"Director Zhao, it means Cover Your Ass," Kagome explained. "I won't leave any obvious holes, or any if I can, for anyone to take advantage of me. I am not some spring rabbit fresh from the den."

Shaking his head, Zhao Shunchang turned and returned to his office. In the past few months, he had made it a habit to stay until she left to ensure the office was locked up and that Kagome had gotten a taxi home.

The sound of footsteps hurrying towards her covered booth, Kagome lifted her head and frowned. She had finally found time to treat herself to a meal at one of her favorite restaurants. From the old-style decor to the ambiance, it set a relaxing and soothing mood for her. Yet, for some reason, drama had to happen outside her private booth.

Before she could return to enjoying her meal, the curtain was pulled aside, and someone darted in. Leaving Kagome at a loss for words as she saw who it was. The harried face of her boss, Zhao Shunchang, as he pressed against the wall and tried to calm his heavy breathing.

"Mr. Zhao? Where did you go?"

The pretentious-sounding female voice had Kagome arching an eyebrow and staring in dark humor at her boss. Who took that moment to notice that she was in the private booth? His shock and horror made her smile widely as she moved to the side and motioned for him to join her.

She wasn't surprised at his hesitation before he walked over and sat beside her. Kagome chuckled and heard the clicky clip of heels on the stone floor heading toward her booth. She lifted the edge of the tablecloth and lifted her chin, indicating that the man beside her would get under the table.

The way he paled before the sound of the high-heeled feet stopped outside the booth and had him scurrying quickly under the table made Kagome bite the inside of her mouth. Relaxing her fingers, the tablecloth dropped back, and a tall woman dressed in name brands from head to toe entered her booth without permission.

The way those fox-like black eyes landed on her, Kagome pursed her lips and stared coldly.

"Who are you? Did a man come in here? And don't lie to me."

Kagome leaned back and tilted her head as she tapped a finger on the cloth-covered table top.

"Miss, this is my private booth; the only invader is you. If you don't leave, I will call for the staff and have you removed. This restaurant values the customers and their privacy," She said, letting a smile curl her mouth into a small smile.

"You, what right do you have to say that to me? Do you know who I am?"

Kagome said nothing as she reached toward the wall behind her for the remote control that would summon the wait staff.

"No, I don't. But I know you don't have any involvement in the ownership of this restaurant, as I am close friends with the owner and his family. Now leave before I remove you for invading a private booth without real cause."

The woman's face flushed in anger as she sputtered before leaving. Kagome heard the muttered threat of revenge and didn't care. This type of woman, or person, didn't scare her. Nope, not at all.

Once the woman was long gone, Kagome bent over and lifted the table cloth to see her boss sitting on the floor; head hung in shame.

"Mr. Zhao, would you like to come out? That she-devil is gone," Kagome said.

His head lifted at her words, and she met her gaze for a second before looking away. Kagome watched as he crawled out from under the table and stood. She could tell he was awkward and uncomfortable at the moment.

"Don't worry, I saw and heard nothing today. I got a call from a friend and had to leave," Kagome said as she once more dropped the tablecloth and stood up, grabbing her purse. "You may rest in this booth; it is my private booth here. Order whatever you want and bill it to my tab."

Then without letting him react or say a word, Kagome left.

As he entered his house, Zhao Shunchang couldn't help but think over everything that had happened earlier. He hadn't thought a prior blind date would have become obsessive enough to crash another blind date his father set up for him. That woman was insane; he had already called and filed a restraining order and informed his father about it. He had to silently thank Kagome for teaching him about CYAing.

Yet meeting Kagome at that particular restaurant he liked to frequent due to its history and quality. Or she had a private booth and connections to the owner, a severe recluse. Nor receiving the help she gave.

Her words had struck him hard as he had watched her leave. She was always a quiet, polite, and friendly woman. The tone she used with his prior blind date was cold and ruthless. There was no room for disputing her words that were to the point and concise. It amazed him to see how authoritative she had been in sending the other party running, denying she had seen him or anything that had happened.

It had felt wrong to be cut off and shut out like that. But then again, Zhao Shunchang was thankful since he knew she'd not say anything to anyone at work. He knew it was an open secret that he was forced to go on blind dates. Yet, while others tried to win his favor, Kagome stayed neutral towards him there and in public.

Sighing, Zhao Shunchang looked at the butler and smiled as he shook his head. He wasn't hungry and wanted to go to bed early to process everything. As he realized that Kagome was someone, he had come to take an interest in.

Kagome was horrified as she stared at her boss and the piece of paper framed and hung behind him. She wanted to laugh and cry as he looked at her sloppy attempt at Calligraphy. It was a hobby she picked up not too long ago. And this was one of her practice runs using timeless Chinese proverbs. When he had first found it in the stack of documents for a project, and she had realized she'd accidentally slipped it in, he'd asked to keep it.

Being herself, Kagome had agreed without hesitation since she saw no harm in it. But she didn't think he'd hang it behind his desk where everyone could see the poorly written Kanji and Hiragana.

"Uh...sir, why did you... display that in your office?" She asked.

The slight smile at the corners of his thin lips made Kagome suddenly not want to hear his answer.

"Because those proverbs are a reminder. And though not written beautifully, it is in a way saying that all things have a beginning and will grow from there," Zhao Shunchang replied.

Kagome could see his aura dancing around him, letting her know he was happy that she was feeling embarrassed. In the past five weeks, this man seemed to take to poking and teasing her. And Kagome had no clue why he had an interest in her. All she did was treat him as a person and help him that one time.

Though she did enjoy talking with him, as he was a generally polite, sweet, and respectful man, she was a hot-blooded woman and enjoyed a relatively easy man on the eyes. But he was her boss, and that was a line she had learned many incarnations ago not to cross.

"Ah, okay. I guess I am honored you are displaying my calligraphy," Kagome said, hearing how embarrassed she sounded. "I will excuse myself then since I have delivered the requested documents for the project."

Giving him a polite bow, Kagome retreated quickly, hoping her face wasn't red since she felt like it was on fire.

"Shunchang, what is with the horribly written Calligraphy on your wall?"

Zhao Shunchang smiled and looked at his eldest brother, Zaho Shunrong. He had purposefully hung it there to be noticed and told Kagome a part of the truth.

"Because I like it," he said softly and slowly. "And the person who wrote it has just started learning traditional Calligraphy."

At the slightly lifted eyebrow from his brother, Zhao Shunchang just smiled widely and let him draw his own conclusions. It wasn't like he actively tried to hide that he liked Kagome. But to avoid making the workplace awkward for her, he'd restrained himself.

He had taken to reading several books on how to pursue someone and show his interest. It was the first time in his life, and he was nervous and didn't want to alert his family.

"Who did it? Was it someone from your department?"

At his brother's quick questions, Zhao Shunchang nodded and told him who. The way his brother stared at him was worth it. Kagome was a coveted asset in the Zhao Corporation, and his brother and niece were well aware of her worth.

"I just ask you to say nothing to father as I haven't even asked her about a relationship yet," He said, frowning. "The past few weeks, I have been trying to get closer to her, and her defenses are up, and she is wary. And I feel she is a bit dense in that department."

The slow nod her got before his eldest brother left had Zhao Shunchang turning to look at the Calligraphy. His eyes scanned the many proverbs before settling on one in particular. The strokes used to write it were bold, strong, and left an impact.

"The First Thing is to Start, and the Second is to Continue."

This proverb hit home as it was about changing 'one's life.' And he was trying to do that bit by bit. And the way it was written meant that Kagome was also.

He was smiling as he recalled that it was just before his fortieth birthday when she gave it to him. And he had learned that Kagome wasn't as young as he thought; she was only five years his junior, not ten or more.

A year had gone, and Kagome couldn't help but stare at her boss. He dropped a hell of a bomb on her and one that pleased her but sent her anxiety soaring.

She was swallowing as she recalled that she had been suddenly called into Deputy Chief Zhao Yulin's office two months ago. There sat the big boss, the prior Deputy Chief, now Chairman of the Zhao Corporation board, and the eldest brother of her boss, Zhao Shunrong. This man's aura was strong and cold.

They'd questioned her about her relationship with Zhao Shunchang. She had been very frank with them that there was nothing other than employee and boss at work and outside a friendship that she didn't push. Kagome had stated when asked that she wouldn't pursue anything more intimate and fuck up the workplace. She detested drama in the workplace; workplace romantic relationships were the quickest way to do that.

Then when Chairman Zhao asked if his brother pursued it, how would she handle it? She told him she'd resign from the place as she wasn't averse to trying a romantic relationship with her boss. This had shocked them both, and Kagome had left them in the office in silence without being dismissed.

Who knew that her boss would ask her if she'd be willing to date him? Kagome smiled and walked to stand at the edge of his desk and looked into his back eyes.

"Before I give you an answer, you need to understand one thing about me. I do not do romance in the office and hate office drama caused by office romance," She said. "So, for us to have a relationship, I will resign from Zhao Corporation. That is my condition for any relationship with you or anyone here. Please think on this."

The way his eyes widened and his pupils seemed to shake as if an earthquake was happening inside his head had Kagome lowering her gaze. This deal was a breaker for many who had approached her.

"I understand and accept," Zhao Shunchang said after a few seconds. His hands covered hers where they rested on his desk. "In my book, you are worth the condition you stated. So, will you think about dating me?"

Kagome felt shocked before she laughed and leaned forward. She let her lips brush softly against his. Kagome stood up the moment he stiffened, winked, then left the office. She had to go to the Deputy Chief's office and turn in her resignation letter.

Making her way to her desk, Kagome opened the drawer, pulled out a manilla envelope, and headed to the elevator. It didn't take long for her to get in and reach the top floor. When Secretary Lin saw her, Kagome smiled and said she needed to speak immediately to the Deputy Chief. To get a nod to indicate she should go right on in.

When Kagome entered, she was shocked to see not just the Deputy Chief but the Chairman, his son Yichen, his partner Nie Yufen, and Mu Tingfeng, the Deputy Chief's husband. Without a word, she put the manilla envelope on the desk and bowed.

She could see the shock and surprise in their aura, especially one person. Now her past was going to catch up to her. Turning, Kagome started to leave but stopped and looked back at a particular person.

"Third Cousin Tingfeng, tell Second Cousin Ruixin I will call her tonight. But say nothing to anyone else; I will contact the family at my own pace," She said and left when a distinctly female voice called coldly to her third cousin.

Kagome felt satisfied with the chaos she was causing. IT had been almost six years since she ran away from home in Country J without contacting them and having paid(before recalling her memories and skills) to erase her identity and come to Shalnark.

Zhao Shunchang stared blankly at everyone gathered in his niece's office. He'd been called up two hours after Kagome had left his office, which means that Kagome had delivered her resignation letter and had accepted him as more than a boss and friend.

Yet he needed to figure out how to take what he had learned about Kagome Higurashi. She was from Country J, and her great-grandfather was related to Su Ruixin, Mu Tingfengs mother. Or that said great-grandfather was also associated with the former Imperial family of Country J. She had run away almost a decade ago after several attempts to be matchmade.

Unable to deny the absurdity of it, Zhao Shunchang didn't even try to care as he started to laugh. It was just like Kagome hiding her identity and wanting to be treated as an average person. It only helped him to understand his new girlfriend that much more.

"Uncle!"

"Brother!"

Shaking his head as he fought to control his emotions, Zhao Shunchang looked at the shocked and exasperated faces of those in the office.

"Kagome is a private person. And if she ran away from home for that reason, it is just like her. She is very headstrong," he said.

"You've no idea," Mu Tingfeng muttered as he rubbed at his wrist subconsciously.

Zhao Shunchang was sure that there was a story behind those actions since he knew that Kagome was like a precious gem with many facets.

"I accepted her condition for dating me. I feel no remorse that we lost such an amazing worker," He said as he glanced at his nephew and business partner. "But I don't think we should let her go too far. How about Nie Yufen offering a job? That way, she is being kept close and still able to help our Company?"

The way the air seemed to stagnate as each person forgot to breathe at their suggestion had Zhao Shunchang laughing again.

"Also, I do not want father to know," He said, suddenly serious. "My private life is just that, my private life. And I don't want to make Kagome feel pressured since it took me over half a year even to get her comfortable enough around me. I am still shocked that she reciprocated enough to accept me asking her to be my girlfriend."

The slow nods from everyone had him smiling.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go through some employee folders to see if I want to promote or hire a new Project manager for my area," he said, leaving well aware that his steps had a spring to them.

Kagome held Zhao Shunchangs hand as they walked along the beach. A year had passed since she quit her job and started dating him. He was now forty-one to her thirty-six, and she was happy being with him. Though the people sneakily(or trying to be) following them, she wanted to laugh.

"Shunshun, your father is a persistent man, isn't he?" she said softly for him alone.

"Yes, he is. " I think we did well keeping our relationship a secret for the better part of the past year," he mumbled.

"Oh well, it was bound to come out either way," She said as she was suddenly led to a small rocky outcrop with some dried logs.

When they reached it, her hand was released, and she sat. Kagome watched her Shunshun become flustered. She found him absolutely adorable when he got all shy like this. In the past three months, they had started staying at each other's homes for sleepovers.

He was always so respectful of her and never crossed the line. That didn't account for her when she fell asleep and became a handsy huggy monster, as he called it.

The first time that happened was at her small apartment on her custom couch, which was a fold-out bed. They'd been watching movies, and she had passed out, head on his shoulder. And he said he had tried his best to shift her so he could pick her up, only to end up with her wrapping her body around his like a baby octopus.

It had been embarrassing for her when she woke up, and he was still stiff as a board with no sleep and holding her. From there, she had decided to screw propriety and kissed him thoroughly, and he returned what she was giving.

Seeing him act like this in one of their favorite date spots, Kagome felt her heart begin to beat faster. Zhao Shunchang had been acting secretively lately, and it had her on edge, wary. However, some of her had guessed what he would do.

So seeing him get down on one knee before her and pull a small jewelry box from his sport coat, Kagome smiled at him.

"Kagome Higurashi, you are truly a one-in-a-million woman. And being with you for the past year has been nothing but an honor for me," Zhao Shunchang said as he opened the small box. "Will you do me the honor of being with me for the rest of our lives?"

The sight of sweat beading on his forehead as his hands trembled as she saw the silver band with a princess-cut blue sapphire that matched her eyes had Kagome reaching out. Letting her hands slide up his arms and cradle the back of his neck Kagome leaned in.

"Yes, Shunshun, I will be yours and only yours for eternity," she replied.

She was pulled into his arms in seconds, and her face was peppered with little butterfly kisses, causing her to laugh. Kagome was so happy she didn't care about the 'spies' watching them. Instead, she felt like an imp and pulled back to look into her lover's eyes.

"So, I don't want a big affair considering my family," She said softly. "How about on Monday we go to the government and register our marriage... then drag everyone around for another year...then hold the actual wedding?"

The deep, rumbling laugh she received had let Kagome know he agreed. Besides, she knew he had difficulty restraining himself from being improper with her. And she really wanted to be with him completely; this was a nice middle finger to her and his family when they realized they were already married.

THE END!
