With some time to burn, the various members of the Rising Sun Company found themselves looking for things to do while they waited. Dedue and Flayn were learning how to make seafood paella from a local woman (Dedue more successfully than Flayn), Leonie had purchased a fishing rod and was fishing, Monica was teaching some of the others how to play a card game, and the others had found their own ways to pass the time.
Dorothea, meanwhile, had been asking about the local legends, and one had sparked her interest. Apparently, at the top of the nearby mountain, there was a pond where you could go to meet your fated love.
She had managed to rope Sylvain into climbing the mountain with her. It had taken the better part of a day, but they had reached the top.
The pond wasn't far away, but the two of them decided to rest for a bit. Link had cooked them some mushrooms called Stamella Shrooms that would revitalize their energy. Dorothea could confirm it wasn't snake oil; she and Sylvain had only managed to climb the mountain because of the mushrooms.
"Hyrulean food is great, isn't it?" Sylvain asked. "Eat the right food, cooked the right way, and you can run for hours, or heal from an injury that would take weeks to heal on its own."
Dorothea chuckled. "Yeah. Though I can't say it would be worth it to eat that Hearty Durian that Petra found." Petra had discovered a fruit similar to one grown in her homeland near Lurelin, and had excitedly shown it off. Most of the company, including Dorothea and Sylvain, had found the smell too repulsive for words.
According to Link, Princess Zelda's favorite dessert was Hearty Durian Fruitcake. Lysithea had seemed traumatized by the very concept, and Dorothea couldn't blame her.
"What are you hoping for?" Sylvain asked.
"Honestly?" Dorothea said. "I just want someone to be there who would be able to love me. The Goddess knows not many people have, at least not for reasons beyond the superficial."
"I get it," Sylvain said. "I can't say women have ever been interested in me for anything aside from my status and wealth."
"You aren't that unlovable," Dorothea assured him. "Your flirtations are a turn-off, but I've seen how you try to cheer your friends up when they feel down."
"Dimitri, Felix, and Ingrid? When are they ever not feeling down?" Sylvain asked, and Dorothea chuckled.
"Seriously, though. I think that if you ever settled down and committed yourself to being with a woman, you could make her very happy," Dorothea said.
Sylvain smiled. "Thanks. And I think any guy would be lucky to spend his life with you. Or girl, I know you swing both ways."
Dorothea smiled. "Thank you, Sylvain." She then stood up. "Let's go meet our soul mates."
At the pool, Dorothea saw a man. Nervously, she ran her fingers through her hair before she went to talk to him. "Hello there. What's your name?"
The man jumped slightly. "Ah!" He saw Dorothea and relaxed. "Sorry, you startled me. I was just...I'm trying to work up the courage to talk to her."
"Her?" Dorothea asked, following the man's gaze. She saw a tall, bronze-skinned woman with red hair. "Oh."
"Oh, by the way, my name is Wabbin!" the man said. "To be honest, I lost my way earlier. I closed my eyes for a minute, and when I opened them, the most beautiful woman I've ever seen was standing before me. At first I thought I was dreaming...or that she was a ghost or something. I mean, it's not every day you run into a gorgeous woman in the middle of nowhere... But figment of my imagination or not, it was love at first sight. And so I've decided to gather my courage and go confess my feelings to her!"
Dorothea could barely contain her disappointment. "I see."
"I have this Blue Nightshade flower," Wabbin said. "I want to give it to her and confess my love, but...whenever I try, my legs just freeze up," Wabbin said. "Maybe you could give it to her for me?"
Dorothea briefly thought that maybe she could give the woman the flower, not tell the woman that it was from Wabbin, and hope the woman was attracted to other women. But she dismissed the thought. If the legends of this place were true, she was here because she was Wabbin's soul mate.
"I would-" she started, but Sylvain cut her off. "No. No, she's not going to give the flower to that woman for you. You're going to walk right up to her and give her the flower yourself."
Wabbin grimaced. "I want to, but..."
"No excuses," Sylvain told him. "If this woman really is your soul mate, you can't let someone else give her the flower for you. You're going to walk right up to her and give it to her yourself."
Wabbin swallowed, but he kept hesitating.
"Or maybe we'll see if she fancies me instead?" Sylvain suggested.
"Or maybe me?" Dorothea added, having caught on.
Wabbin's eyes widened, then narrowed. "We'll see about that!" He walked over to where the woman was, and gave her the flower. She seemed taken aback.
Sylvain and Dorothea got a bit closer to listen in. "Could it be that you don't like blue nightshade?" Wabbin asked.
"Why would you say that?" the woman asked. "This is my favorite kind of flower! How did you know that anyway? Are you a Yiga spy?!"
"N-no... Th-that's not it!" Wabbin stammered. "Blue nightshade just happens to be my favorite flower! Long ago, I decided to give my true love this flower..."
"It must be destiny, then..." the woman said. "My name is Perda. What is yours?"
"Wabbin," Wabbin said.
"Wabbin. That is a good name," Perda said. "Very well, Wabbin. Speak your piece."
"Huh? What do you mean?" Wabbin asked.
"You know, what a voe says to a vai?" Perda asked. "Something like, 'I like you, please go out with me'?"
"Oh! Uh, sure! Asking so directly, how could I possibly say no?" Wabbin said.
Now it was Perda's turn to look embarrased.
However, when the two of them did eventually leave, they left hand-in-hand.
Dorothea turned to Sylvain. "I'm still disappointed that my soul mate wasn't here."
Sylvain nodded. "Me too." Turning east, he saw the sunset. "That's really something, isn't it?"
Dorothea stood next to him and watched the sunset with him. "It really is." She looked at him. "Did you mean what you said? That anyone would be lucky to spend their life with me?"
"I did," Sylvain confirmed.
"Would it matter if I was ugly?" Dorothea asked.
"I don't have a concept of an ugly girl, Dorothea," Sylvain said. "For the Goddess's sake, I've flirted with Ingrid's grandmother!" The two of them laughed, and Sylvain asked, "Would it matter if I wasn't wealthy?"
"You aren't wealthy now, and I still like you," Dorothea said.
Without thinking, the two of them kissed.
