-Getting Back To Normal-
"You look great Gwen."
David's smile nearly blinded his co-counselor, she had a feeling he brushed his teeth with something highly radioactive. After being shot, the doctors had said it would be months before she could even lift her right arm above her head.
"I look like I just got hit with an ugly curse by a plague witch."
Gwen grumped, gazing down at the assortment of bandages and the bulky cast that encased her arm. David had insisted upon being the first to sign it, which she begrudgingly let him do, in bright pink glitter pen.
"What do we have planned for today David?"
Gwen resisted the urge to yawn, the drugs she was on to prevent an infection made her tired as balls. She cast her weary gaze over to the children who were assembled by the flag pole, most of them were pretty shaken up from being shot at.
"That's a great question Gwen, today we are swimming!"
There came a cheer from the majority of the kids except for one, it was obviously Max, because Max hated everything. Gwen looked back to David with an uncertain expression.
"How am I supposed to help you with this...I can't get this stupid cast wet?"
David's smile only seemed to get brighter, like a star that was about to explode.
"Max decided to take over your job for you, he usually just sits on the dock anyway."
David adjusted his hat, gesturing for the sullen young man to come on over, Max wandered up to Gwen's side.
"David said I get an extra dessert for doing this."
With that explained, Max produced a book from somewhere and ambled off towards the sole dock. He had at least ten minutes before everyone else got changed and into the water, ten whole minutes of peace.
Gwen decided that she'd watch from a safer distance, hauling out an old camp chair that had seen better days. She plunked the rickity thing down on the shore, settling onto it herself, a book somehow appearing in her hands.
Quartermaster was tinkering with their beloved tank, the sound of a welder occasionally breaking the silence of the forest. He'd sourced an actual 30 caliber machine gun for the top of the monster.
Finding tank shells had been difficult, but Q.M had wrangled up 4 of them from a source on the internet. Each shell was carefully inspected so that it wouldn't just explode randomly before it was ever fired.
Campbell had come back to do something highly illegal in the woods, he'd left them carrying a shovel, duct tape and a hammer. Nobody knew where he was exactly, not that anyone wanted to actually look for him.
Nikki had managed to find a giant inflatable shark, and was riding it around being pulled by a very reluctant Neil. "Nikki, something gross just touched me!" He wailed, but kept swimming, knowing Nikki would scold him for being a wuss.
"Max you have to learn to swim someday."
David stood over the reading youth with a stern look on his face, his arms snaking out like crazy straws to snag the childs hoodie. Max flailed like he was being attacked by a swarm of killer bees, David refused to let him go.
"The best way to learn is..."
David threw Max into the lake.
I repeat.
David tossed Max into the water!
