(After 'The Change in the Game')
A/N: Fanfiction has been broken for a few weeks. I posted chapters 11 and 12, but no one was notified that I know of. If you haven't read those yet then I recommend you do so before you continue with this chapter.
I really don't own Bones.
Ooooooooooooooooo
Before Angela had a chance to talk to her friend about the frenzy on her fan sites, Brennan and Booth were dispatched to a crime scene. While Brennan and Cam leaned over the body and tried to determine what had killed the victim a reporter showed up and stood behind the yellow and black tape separating the body dump from the public.
Waving his hand, Alex Pittman tried to get the attention of Brennan. "Dr. Brennan . . . Dr. Brennan."
Annoyed, Booth walked over to where the reporter was standing and confronted the man. "We don't have anything to say at this time. We haven't had time to identify the body yet. We'll release that information as soon as possible, but it does take time."
Before Booth could turn away, Alex shook his head. "No, I don't care about the victim . . . well, sorry . . . that didn't come out right. What I meant to say is, I'm not here about this crime. I'm here to confirm whether or not Dr. Brennan is pregnant or not. I cover social media and that's all her fans are talking about today."
Puzzled, Booth placed his note cards and pen in his jacket pocket. "What do you mean? Her fans say she's pregnant?"
"Well yeah." Alex stared at the agent and wondered if he was going to be lied to. He wasn't sure he could trust Agent Booth or not. "It started yesterday morning . . . Someone posted that Dr. Brennan is pregnant and her fans have been arguing about it ever since. I noticed it yesterday afternoon. I tried to call Dr. Brennan's publicist about it this morning, but I just got a 'no comment' about it. I then tried to call Dr. Brennan but she doesn't take calls from reporters . . . I heard about the body dump and I took a chance that she might be here and I came over to see if she would confirm or deny whether or not she's pregnant."
Angry, Booth knew he needed to remain calm and keep his emotions in check. He knew it would be a mistake if he lost his temper. It was possible he could end up in the news and he knew his boss would be pissed if that happened. "Look, I've visited Dr. Brennan's fan site before and those people can be nuts. They don't verify anything. A rumor gets posted as gospel and they just run with it . . . you've probably seen that too. I quit looking at those sites because of . . . well, because of the nonsense."
Not to be put off, Alex wanted to know if the rumor was true. "Is Dr. Brennan pregnant or not? It's a simple question."
Booth didn't want to answer that question. Staring at his lover, he noticed she was poking a finger into the victim's gory chest. "Wait and contact her publicist this afternoon. She should know one way or another by then. If there is a rumor going around, she'll probably contact Dr. Brennan as soon as she can and once that's cleared up, she'll be able to say something other than 'no comment'."
"Or you could just let me ask Dr. Brennan now." Alex wanted to know the answer to his question and he wasn't going away. "I'm not leaving until I get my answer. You know sooner or later more reporters are going to be asking the same question. She's a famous author and scientist. What she does is news and you should know that by now."
Frustrated, Booth turned and walked over to where Brennan was squatting next to the body. "Bones, I need to talk to you in private for a few moments . . . just a few moments." He knew she didn't like to be interrupted when she was working.
Curious, Brennan stood up, removed her gloves and deposited them in a plastic bag. Following Booth over to the back of the tech van, she stepped behind the opened panel and stared at her partner.
"Okay, don't kill the messenger . . . someone found out you're pregnant and posted it on your fan site or sites . . . I'm not sure about that part. There's a reporter here and he wants you to confirm or deny it." Booth saw the irritation on her face and held up his hands defensively. "I don't know who posted that bit of news, the reporter didn't say . . . what do you want to do about it?"
"This is very annoying . . . I haven't told anyone and as far as I know you've only told Hank." Brennan stared at Booth and wondered if he'd told anyone else. After all, he had been quite excited about the news when she had told him.
Booth shook his head. "Hey, I didn't tell anyone besides Pops. I knew it was going to be a mess when your fans found out and I wanted to put off that nightmare for a while . . . Did you tell Angela?"
"No, of course not." Brennan was furious but didn't have anyone she could focus her anger on. "We can't lie to the reporter. That will just create issues down the road. Besides, you know I don't like to lie."
In agreement, Booth placed his hand on Brennan's lower arm. "Hey . . . What do you want to do? I can escort the reporter away from here, but he'll just track you down at the diner or the Founding Fathers. He's not going to give up."
"Yes . . . I know." She'd dealt with reporters in the past and found that telling the truth created less complications. "Lead me to the reporter and I'll verify my pregnancy. Once that is done, I will call my publicist and have her release a statement as soon as possible . . . This is not what I had planned. Too many of my fans are interested in my private life . . . I find that I am quite upset that someone betrayed me . . . I just wish I knew who that someone is."
"Yeah, me too. I'd strangle them if I knew who did it." Booth sighed. "Okay, let's get this over with."
Angry, Brennan walked over to where the reporter was and asked him point blank. "Who originally posted that I was pregnant?"
Checking his notebook, Alex found the information he was looking for. "Believe me, this took me awhile, but the first post seemed to come from someone named 'Crimeismygame44'. Once he or she posted that bit of news your fan sites blew up . . . Are you pregnant?"
"I have no idea why this is considered news, but yes . . . I am pregnant." Much to her annoyance, the reporter had another question.
"Who's the father?" He saw the anger on her face and he wondered why.
Brennan shook her head. "That is none of your business. I am not prepared to answer that question at this time . . . I will probably release that information in a week or so."
"Why wait?" Alex found that rather odd behavior. "Why not tell me? . . . is he married or something?"
Outraged, Booth motioned for two police officers to come closer. "Escort this reporter away from here. He's interfering with our crime scene."
Startled, Alex protested. "Hey, you can't do that."
Booth laughed without humor. "Of course, I can."
Oooooooooooooo
Once they were back at the Lab, Brennan called Angela. "First, I have news I must tell you . . . I'm pregnant."
This is great news, Bren. Thank you for telling me.
"You're welcome." Brennan stared at the activity in the hallway and felt that she was wasting valuable time. "Second, I was contacted by a reporter while I was at a crime scene and he told me that my fan sites have been talking about my pregnancy since yesterday. I am not sure where that information came from since the only people who knew about it were my gynecologist, Booth and his grandfather . . . I find that I am angry that someone found out and posted that information online. The reporter said that it looks like the original post came from someone using the username Crimeismygame44."
Sweetie, you know I didn't do that, don't you? I would never post something that personal on your fan sites. Besides, I didn't know you're pregnant.
"I know you wouldn't betray me, Angela." But, Brennan did feel like this was a betrayal by someone. "I have called my publicist and she's going to release the information about my pregnancy in an hour. Booth is over at the Hoover letting Hacker know about my condition . . . Booth isn't happy about this situation. He feels his privacy has been invaded and I agree with him."
Let me do some digging and see if I can figure out who Crimeismygame44 is. Maybe that will lead us to the culprit. Honey, I'm sorry that someone jumped the gun and blabbed about your pregnancy. It's not fair to you or Booth.
"Fair or not, the news is out . . . Booth wanted to tell Parker about my pregnancy this weekend. The plan was to wait until I was in my second trimester before we told anyone else . . . I do want to know who posted that information online and how they knew I am pregnant. If this is coming from my doctor's office then I will make sure to never see him again . . . I don't actually believe that the information came from there since that would be a betrayal of trust and it could ruin his practice, but someone found out and I want to know who and why." Brennan had always trusted Dr. Swartz and she hoped she could continue to do so.
You can count on me, Sweetie. I'll track down this Crimeismygame44 person and find out how they knew you're pregnant. They made a serious mistake posting that on your fan sites and they will find that out very soon.
Grateful to have such a friend, Brennan knew that Angela would find out who had betrayed her. "Thank you, Angela."
You're welcome, Honey.
Once the call was ended, Angela checked on her son, found he was still sleeping and decided that she could start her research. "I should have looked into this when I saw the fan site yesterday. I should have remembered that Brennan is famous and reporters would bug her about this sooner or later. Whoever posted that news online is in big trouble and I am glad it isn't me."
Ooooooooooooo
Let me know what you think of my story. Thank you.
