This is basically a rewrite of my Au series into one fic. If this is your first time reading, no worries as you will not need any additional info before diving into this fic.
I do not own any of the original Percy Jackson series, that title goes to Rick R'iordian.
California
Percy set the last bag on the bed and stared at the pile of suitcases. He ran a hand through his hair, letting out a huff.
He always had mixed feelings about going to see his father for the summer. He was happy to see his father, but his father was usually so engrossed in his work that Percy was usually left stranded with his stepmother or his half-brother.
"Percy have you packed?"
"Yes, Mom," said Percy as he slumped onto the bed.
Sally tapped her fingers on the doorframe, "You haven't seen your father in a year, I'm sure you're making it sound much worse in your head than it will be."
"It's not my father I'm worried about."
Sally sat beside him on the bed and pulled her son into a sideways hug. "I'm sure your stepmother will understand better during the summer break."
Percy snorted "You say that every year".
"Well it's true, your first year of high school really matured you."
Percy shrugged, and his mother patted his shoulder. "Don't forget," she said, "I gave your father permission to let you join him on these rescues. You're supposed to stay on the boat and observe; I don't need a call telling me you got bit by a shark."
Percy frowned. "The sharks won't bite me; they only bite people who swim around like seals."
"Percy..."
Percy rolled his eyes, "I'll stay on the boat."
"Good. I made your father promise that as well, but I'll trust your word over his any day. Now I know you'll have a good time this summer, and don't stress about it; you'll only make yourself miserable."
Percy nodded; it had been this way since he was three. He would stay in California with his mother during the school year and then fly to New York to stay with his father over the summer. This marked the twelfth year of the tradition.
His family was very small on his mother's side; basically, it's just him and his mother. His mother married his stepfather Paul five years ago.
He liked Paul; he was a lot nicer than his step-mother Amphitrite. Plus, he would take anything over his mother's ex-boyfriend, smelly Gabe.
His father's side more extensive as Percy had aunts, uncles, and cousins, something that he didn't share with his mother's side. He didn't have grandparent's on either side as his mother's parents died in a plane crash and his father's parents...
He actually knew nothing about them because no one ever mentioned them; it was a forbidden taboo topic. He wasn't sure why that was, but it was an unspoken agreement among all of the family members.
His father also had a wife and another son. His stepmother Amphitrite never really liked him. He supposed that's somewhat normal, as the fairy tales he grew up with painted the step-relatives as evil, hateful people. She never harmed him physically, but her mouth had a mind of its own when it came to him. Of course, she didn't mock him around her husband, but it wasn't like he was with his father all the time during the summer.
His half-brother Triton isn't much better than his mother. They always fought when they were younger, as there was only a two-year age gap between them. Lately, Triton doesn't even acknowledge him anymore.
"I expect you to call me if you need anything, or if you need to vent about your step mother or your half brother."
Percy shook the thoughts from his head, as his mother's voice came through the wall of memories.
"I will."
"Good, now let's gather all of your luggage and get you to your flight on time."
Sally and Paul helped him load up the car with his luggage. He glanced back at their apartment as he did every time before he left for the summer. Percy would miss the small apartment; it wouldn't make sense to most people since he'd be upgrading to New York. His father owned a big house and a decent-sized pool in the backyard, but his mother's simple apartment lived in Percy's heart.
After putting the last bag in the trunk, he slowly shut the trunk and took his spot in the backseat behind the passenger seat. His mother got into the car next; she climbed into the passenger seat. Then, Paul got into the driver's seat.
Percy yawned; it was only four in the morning, and his flight left at 5:45 am, so he would arrive in New York within a reasonable time. However, as it was still so early in the morning, the first rays of the sun had not yet blessed its presence on the horizon.
Percy leaned his head against the closed window, mindlessly gazing at the passing scenery, while some eighties music played in the background.
"Are you excited to spend time in New York?" Paul asked.
Percy shrugged. "It'll be the same as it is every year."
The car grew silent, only the low hum of the music filled the space. Percy sighed and leaned his head back against the car window, gazing out at the scenery. It wasn't until the vehicle crept up the steep hill that another car to the left of them swerved and hit their car, sending the three of them flying off the cliff.
All Percy could remember was hearing the squeal of tires and the crunching of metal. The noise was overpowered by the feeling of searing hot pain spreading through his body. The pain was too much for Percy to handle; his vision began to dim into the darkness.
In New York
Poseidon groggily rubbed his eyes as he waited for the coffee to brew. It was a beautiful Friday morning – scratch that, a beautiful Friday afternoon. He took a second glance at the clock on the microwave. 2:13 PM.
He usually doesn't sleep in, but his job has him overworked and exhausted. Today, he only has time off because he needs to pick up his son from the airport. Despite being the founder of Olympion Rescue Aquarium, he doesn't get the luxury to relax or take it easy. Though he admits he is rich, he still can't sit back and relax.
He is the lead rescuer of marine animals along the East Coast. This means he travels state to state and assists with saving sea creatures – usually trapped in fishing nets or entangled in garbage thrown into the ocean. Most of the time, he frees them and they are safe to continue their merry lives in the sea. In other cases, when they aren't so fortunate and require medical attention, he airlifts them into his aquarium where his trained veterinarian can operate on them. Then they remain in his aquarium until they are healthy enough to be released back into the sea.
There has been a drastic increase in emergency calls in the past week as more and more plastic and garbage have been tossed into the sea, making life nearly impossible for these creatures to survive. He ran a hand down his face in frustration, thinking about it.
The only positive aspect about this, is that for the past week he has been able to bring along his eldest son Triton to help. He's training him to assist in these rescue missions and eventually lead them. Triton just finished his junior year of high school over a week ago, which is why Poseidon was able to bring him along. And Poseidon will be able to bring his youngest son Percy along next week after he picks him up from the airport today.
Triton and Percy are not full siblings; they are half-siblings. Poseidon had Triton with his current wife Amphitrite when he was eighteen. He broke off their relationship with Amphitrite within three months of their son being born. He then moved to San Francisco for college and met Percy's mother Sally there. Two years later, Poseidon proposed to her after he learned she was pregnant.
That is when shit hit the fan for his side of the family. His father was never pleased with him to begin with; he didn't think he was pleased with any of his other siblings either. Kronos grew furious that he ended up with a girl like Sally. Sally is one of the nicest and most generous people Poseidon has ever met, a true queen among the people. His father didn't care about her personality, he only cared about her financial state. He didn't want her to "ruin" the family image. Poseidon cut him out of his life shortly after his youngest was born.
It was supposed to be a happy moment, but that moment was tarnished by anxiety and concern as his father found another way to contact him. Poseidon still hadn't figured out how he did it, but Kronos sent threats through mail. They contacted the police, but they were no help. The letters kept becoming more and more persistent; Poseidon kept pushing their marriage back, hoping the threats would cease. Eventually, he decided it was best that they would split for the safety of their son. Poseidon left California when Percy was three. That's when he started getting custody of Percy during the summers, then he would be with his mother for the rest of the year.
After Poseidon returned to New York, he shared custody of Triton with Amphitrite. She began flirting with him again, and eventually, one thing led to another. He ended up marrying her four years later. Triton was nine, and Percy was seven when they tied the knot. The rest is history.
If only Amphitrite and Triton could get along with Percy. Things were rough at first, during the yearly tradition of Percy living with them.
Amphitrite openly insulted Percy in front of Poseidon and assigned him all the chores; however, Poseidon quickly shot that down. She seemed to get along better with his son over the years, but he suspected that she was only putting on a façade in front of him and treating Percy differently when he wasn't around.
Triton wasn't much better around him. When they were younger, Triton would purposely break his toys or steal them. Poseidon convinced himself that this was normal behavior since his older brother Hades did the same to him, and he recalled doing the same to his younger brother Zeus. It got to a point that Poseidon had to severely punish Triton after he found him beating Percy up when Triton was thirteen and Percy was eleven. After that, Triton just ignored Percy, and Poseidon put up with it since at least they weren't hurting each other physically anymore.
Poseidon leaned his head back and sipped the hot coffee, enjoying the quiet bliss of the house. Amphitrite was at work; she worked for a health insurance company. Triton was at the aquarium; he had been employed there a year ago. Nereus was running the aquarium today; he was the second-in-command there. He was a stinky old fisherman, but he did a great job with rescues, so Poseidon didn't complain about him...well, not around him anyway.
Poseidon glanced back at the clock; it had only been five minutes since he last looked at it. He sighed; he didn't have to pick Percy up from the airport until four, and that wasn't for another two hours.
Poseidon had almost finished his cup of coffee when his cellphone rang. He looked at the screen, seeing it was an unknown number; he groaned. If he didn't recognize a number, it was most likely a call for a rescue. Poseidon made sure Nerus would get all the calls today, but he guessed one call slipped past him, and the person ended up calling Poseidon instead. He braced himself for an angry complaint about why the rescue wasn't being answered.
Poseidon answered the phone with a polite, "This is Poseidon. How may I help you?"
"Is this Poseidon Olympian?" A man's voice spoke on the phone.
Poseidon rolled his eyes at the question. How many Poseidon's can there be? "Yes, this is him. How can I help you?" He repeated.
"Are you the father of Perseus Jackson?"
That question caught him off guard. "Yes I am. I'm sorry but whom am I speaking to?"
What the caller responded with, is what every parent dreads to hear. "I'm police officer Lee with the San Francisco police, your son Perseus Jackson has been involved in a serious car accident. You need to get to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital immediately."
