I do not own Harry Potter; all characters belong to JK Rowling.

I will do my best to update as much as I can (I will attempt to at least have one update a month, if not more than that. I have a very busy work schedule and may not be able to consistently update this this story.) My plans for this story are to have it loosely based on the books created by JK Rowling. It will start shortly after Albus Dumbledore dropped Harry off at his aunt's house, with a time jump after the story has been set up. If this is similar to any other fanfiction I am sorry, any similarities are unintentional.

A Different World

Becoming Aware

Petunia opened the door to find her nephew, Harry, in a basket with a letter in his tiny hands. Having never seen Harry in person, Petunia was unaware of how the family would take his sudden appearance. After reading the letter she was not surprised to find out that her sister and her good for nothing husband were dead. She was highly displeased to find out that she would have to take care of her nephew and knew that Vernon would be pissed. Petunia went into the house to wake up her husband and tell him the bad news.

As she predicted, Vernon was not pleased to find out that he would be responsible of taking care of his nephew. Vernon said to his wife, "we will take the boy, but Dudley will take precedent and I could care less about what happens to the boy. All I care about is making sure that we keep these people who left him with us away from us." For many years their secret would remain, but they were unaware of what would happen once the boy found out he was magical, and what would happen once the boy found out who and what he was.

Harry, now 8, had been neglected for most of his life. Having lived with his aunt, uncle, and cousin since he was 1, he was always given his cousin's hand-me-downs. Not only that he was undernourished and was always hungry. Even though he was eight he looked like he was much younger and very few new about his existence. The few people that new who and where he was included the school that he went to, a few of the wizards and witches of the wizarding community (unknown to him) and the neighbor that he would stay with when the Dursley's decided to go somewhere.

That is where he currently was. His neighbor had decided that she had had enough and was going to be reaching out to one of the people that she was currently in contact with. Many people, including Vernon and Petunia, had no idea that she was a part of the wizarding community. Even though she had never had any magical powers she had been left to be one of the only people to look after the boy since few people cared about her.

Minerva

I have had enough. Albus made the wrong decision leaving Harry with his only remaining relatives. He barely looks like he should since they treat him as if he doesn't exist. He has told me that he is constantly beaten by his cousin and his aunt and uncle allow him to eat once everyone else has finished. Not wanting to see Harry while they eat they leave him where he sleeps (which happens to be in the cupboard under the stairs) and feed him whatever is left once everyone has eaten their fill. He told me that this often leaves him with a few bites to eat each meal. He also is let out only in the morning and the evening to use the restroom. I no longer believe that Albus should be his magical guardian, nor should he be allowed to live with his aunt and uncle. If I do not hear from you by the end of the month I will confront the Dursley's and will contact the muggle authorities.

Arabella Figg

A few days later, Harry's neighbor was taking care of him while the Dursley's spent the day at the local mall allowing Dudley to do whatever he wanted. Known to Harry as Ms. Figg, she smiled at Harry as she watched him hoping that her letter would allow him to live a better life soon. Finally, she decided it was time for them to eat. She grabbed his hand and took him to the kitchen where she pulled out the shepherd's pie she had been making since he had come over today. He sat down to eat and took a few bites before saying that he was done. She told him "You can eat as much as you want Harry, I have already eaten, and you really should eat more since you are growing." He looked at her gratefully but told her "This is all my stomach can hold, I don't usually eat much more than this at any of my meals. I really love the food though, Ms. Figg."

Unbeknownst to any of the people that lived at 4 Privet Drive or Arabella, there was a tabby cat was walking up the street looking at all the houses as if it was looking for a particular house. The cat appeared to have found the house that it was looking for the cat started walking up the driveway of 4 Privet Dr. As the cat arrived at the door it looked around and looked back at the door as it opened of its own accord. The cat walked in and upon finding no one home turned into an elderly woman in a green robe. Minerva had been surprised to receive a letter from Arabella Figg, usually she writes Albus. As she explored it appeared as if the Dursley's were the only ones living in the house. She was about to leave when she found a cupboard under the stairs with several small holes in it and a compartment like the one on the front door allowing for things to be pushed through. When she opened the door, she found a bed and little else.

As she was leaving the cupboard, she heard a car door slam and heard a man telling people named Petunia and Dudley to go in the house as he talked to the boy. Minerva just managed to shut the cupboard and switch back to the tabby cat before the door opened. She decided to lay on top of the fridge in the kitchen, in the shadows and observe until she was able to leave. As the man came in with an extremely malnourished boy he said "You are to go to your cupboard and stay in there for the rest of the night, you will not eat dinner and you will never see Ms. Figg again." She watched as Petunia opened the back door and stepped outside and walked out to take the trash out, she had been cleaning as Vernon yelled at the young boy. She took this opportunity to get out of the house and go talk to Arabella Figg.

She knocked on the door and Arabella opened the door shocked to she Minerva McGonagall at the door. Minerva asked her "what happened just now. I was rummaging through the Dursley house when they came back and Vernon told harry that he would not be eating for the rest of the night and that he would never see you again." Arabella proceeded to tell her that she had been feeding harry and letting him watch whatever he wanted on the muggle TV, when Vernon walked in the door. He yelled at me saying "what do you think you're doing, I told you that we would feed him when we got home and that he was not allowed to enjoy himself." At this point Minerva was more than angry. This boy had gotten rid of one of the most dangerous men in the world and now he was barely allowed to live. Minerva told Arabella that she was going to do something about this but she needed to talk to someone about it first. "I told Albus when he left Harry here that these people were the worst muggles I had ever seen." He told me that everything would be fine and he left a letter explaining to the Dursley's what was going on and what he expected. "I think I will confide in Filius and see how he thinks we should proceed.

Sorry there was very little of harry or his POV from this chapter. I promise to include a little more in the next chapter, however, I plan for most of it to continue to set up the changes that I have planned for Harry's future.
