Review Corner:
Serpensreality: The saddest thing about Kaguya is that Madara had to be axed because he was stated and shown in the series to be too OP and Naruto/Sasuke didn't have a way to beat him if he fought all-out, but Kaguya is stated and shown to be orders of magnitude more powerful than Madara! Imagine an army general saying "That tank regiment we deployed was complete overkill for the mission, so we finished the job with a tactical nuke!"
Overall, I agree with your opinion regarding the balance of power between a Kage and their Daimyo, though it does make me wonder why Gaara's father put up with the Wind Daimyo's mission outsourcing given everything he did to Gaara.
Jerrelhamil: If you're referring to the harem, one of the three characters you mentioned is going to be the last member to join. Of the other 2, one will suffer the same fate they did in canon and the other will experience far worse.
RizenKing: I disagree; restricting Naruto's sword to one whose will he needs to overcome would not make his character and/or this story better. If anything, what you're suggesting would drag the story down by adding another thing Naruto needs to master. I've already said Naruto's harem will be training him in a bunch of different things, so adding the need to get his sword to acknowledge him on top of all that is, narratively, not a good idea.
Naruto's inheritance was something I decided very early in the process of writing this story; while making the decision the only sword that was off the table was Bakusaiga because that sword, in addition to being absurdly op, is implied to be a physical manifestation of Sesshomaru's demonic power. After Sesshomaru's death, Bakusaiga would likely either cease to exist or become powerless.
Inuyasha and Sesshomaru both had character arcs that were heavily tied to their swords. Canon-Naruto did not have a character arc in the truest sense; during the series he went through a lot of shit and matured because of it but his fundamental goals and personality are same in chapter 700 as they were in chapter 1. In this story Naruto will go through a proper character arc but it won't be tied to his sword.
demonboy121986: While I find your idea of merging the swords interesting, it goes against plans that are already in place. Not to mention it was technically done in canon already; Tenseiga was originally part of Tessaiga and was split off specifically to hold Meido Zangetsuha. I love the essence idea, surprised I didn't think of it myself given what I already have in mind for the swords. It'll be implemented down the road to tie in with what's already been planned.
Chapter 7 – Dinner with Hiashi Hyuuga
6:20 PM, Namikaze Estate
Hiashi Hyuuga bristled with anger as he rang the doorbell for the second time. As one of the most prominent people in Konoha, he was not used to being ignored. He knew Naruto was home along with his daughter and Sasuke; he could see them in the dining room with his Byakugan. They were huddled together on a sofa, likely talking about matters only children would be fascinated by. Hiashi was a strict father, but he was not unreasonable; if the purge on Danzo and his Root army was not happening today, he would gladly have excused his daughter's disobedience. He remembered – all too well – what falling in love feels like, the euphoria one feels at the realization that one's emotions are reciprocated. His daughter deserved to have that chance, but today Hiashi dared not take any risks; even the knowledge that the Namikaze estate was all but impenetrable offered little solace.
'Enough of this!' Hiashi unlocked the mansion's front door using the key Minato gave him long ago, but the vitriol lacing his tongue evaporated as he heard three crying voices. Concern for his daughter overshadowed all else in Hiashi's mind as he abandoned all decorum and ran into the dining room. What he saw caused him to doubt his legendary eyes. The three children were crying in subdued voices, evidently on the verge of collecting themselves after a monumental episode of sobbing, if the enormous puddle on the floor was any indication.
"Otou-san? I'm sorry that I haven't been home all day, but please leave me here; I do not wish to return home at this time." Hinata was the first to notice their unannounced visitor, and surprised him greatly by all but kicking him out the door with her voice.
Sasuke looked up but said nothing.
"So those chimes I heard earlier were the doorbell?" Naruto realized. "I apologize profusely, Hiashi-sama; it's a poor excuse, but we've been processing something we just learned."
"Please, if you are able, explain what happened; I need to know the cause of my daughter's tears." Hiashi spoke softly, not wishing to traumatize the trio further.
"Not just her tears, all of ours." It was Sasuke who answered. "We passed the bell test; since we're teammates now, Naruto told us about him being a Jinchuriki and that he's both the last Namikaze and the last Uzumaki. His mother left a Chakra message box in the clan vault. He felt we deserved to listen to it, so he unlocked it in our presence. Kushina Uzumaki's message told the real reason behind Kurama's attack twelve years ago and how both she and the Yondaime died during it."
"It is as I and some others suspected, then." Hiashi replied solemnly. "Naruto-dono, I would have you know that there are those among the Shinobi that have always believed that Kurama's attack was not her doing. Those of us who suspected this should have intervened years ago when it became clear that the majority of Konoha's denizens despised you for matters beyond your control. I came here to invite you to a formal dinner with my family to begin making amends but, clearly, this a most inopportune time for such a thing."
"Wait! Actually that would be great right now; I need a distraction from all this." Naruto pleaded. "That is, if you don't mind having the dinner here. I'm sorry, but I really don't feel like leaving the house tonight."
'Just as well, with the near-civil war being silently waged in the streets this very second.' Hiashi mentally agreed.
"Do you know how to prepare a proper meal?" Hiashi inquired.
"As long as you don't mind simple food; I don't know any complicated recipes."
"For tonight, that is acceptable, but you must be much better prepared in the future; a man who stands to inherit the title of Clan Head – in your case, two such titles – is held to a high degree of scrutiny. I've no doubt you will attain your birthright, be it through diplomacy or force. However, once the positions are yours, you will bring shame to both clans if you do not act with elegance."
"Your advice is greatly appreciated, Hiashi-sama. Hinata, Sasuke: the closest washroom is in the hall around the corner on the left." Naruto said as he manifested an intense Chakra aura around himself to dry all the tears and snot off his body and clothes. Once this was done, he channeled the aura into his feet and stood up; the sea of tears evaporated instantly. As Hinata and Sasuke also got up from the sofa, Naruto redistributed the aura to his hands and channeled it through the drenched piece of furniture, cleansing and drying it as well.
'Amazing! He has near-flawless Chakra control at his age, to say nothing of the creativity behind his technique.' Hiashi's opinion of the young noble skyrocketed as he sat at one head of the dining room table to await his meal.
'Thank Kami my parents left an amateur-level cookbook in here; they must have suspected that the village would treat me like shit if they found out I'm a Jinchuriki, no matter how much they wished otherwise.' Flipping through the pages quickly, Naruto decided to make baked chicken and set the oven to preheat. He grabbed twelve chicken breasts from the refrigerator and thanked Kami, again, for time-suspension seals.
The oven was ingeniously designed to operate on electricity, Chakra, or a mixture of both. Not wishing to risk channeling Chakra through a machine he'd never used before, Naruto busied himself by seasoning the chicken as the oven heated to 400 degrees. The cookbook said to let the chicken bake for twenty minutes, during which time Naruto went to his liquor cabinet and withdrew a rather expensive brand of sake to drink with dinner. He had never consumed alcohol before tonight but trusted in his inhuman anatomy to leave him in good health.
'Worst case scenario, I can always pulse Yang Chakra through my digestive system to sober up; worked well enough whenever cooks tried to poison me with undercooked food.'
Once the chicken was ready, Naruto used a thermometer to ensure that it was at the proper temperature before evenly placing the twelve pieces of meat on four plates. He also placed some celery on each plate to complete each portion.
"Sorry for the wait, dinner's ready!" Three Kage Bushin emerged from the kitchen and laid a plate before each of Naruto's guests while the original carried his own meal. As he sat down another set of four Kage Bushin brought napkins, cutlery, and drinks for everyone.
"Sake? Naruto, we're not of legal drinking age!" Hinata flushed, not wanting her fiancé to make a fool of himself in front of her father.
"The way I see it, if we're old enough to go out and kill people for the good of Konoha, then we're old enough to drink alcohol. If Hiashi-sama disagrees, there are non-alcoholic beverages in the kitchen."
"I find no fault in your reasoning, Naruto-dono. Hinata, drinking alcohol is a necessity at many formal events; now is as good a time as any to begin developing a tolerance for it."
"Naruto, are you sure we should be using silverware like this? They're made of ivory! Shouldn't these be kept on display somewhere?" Sasuke asked.
"You'd think that, but ivory is very durable in addition to being water resistant; it polishes easily, as well. Everyone would be using it if it wasn't a luxury item." Naruto answered.
"Intriguing, I was not aware that our Academy's curriculum included lessons on the properties of ivory." Hiashi raised an eyebrow at his host.
"It doesn't, but I had to do something with my day when I was skipping class. The Academy's Head Librarian would always let me hide out there, and the Shinobi section of the library only has so many books." Naruto clarified.
"How ironic," Hiashi chuckled. "You learned more shirking your educational duties than you would have by observing them. At the next Council meeting, I'll petition Hokage-sama to increase the Head Librarian's salary."
"He might have done that already, Kakashi-sensei suggested it while the three of us were here two nights ago." Naruto stated.
"Excellent, now to other business." Hiashi's lavender orbs met Naruto's azure eyes. Naruto-dono, what opinion do you have of my daughter?"
Hinata paled; she had feared this moment from the instant she fell in love with Naruto. Her father would never have approved of their relationship when he was a commoner, and not even his new status would avail him if his character did not meet Hiashi's strict standards.
"She's the most compassionate person in Konoha, by an astronomical margin. Naruto began. "She's had a crush on me for seven years, saved me from starvation more times than I can count, and saved my sanity – if not my soul – as well. How could I not return her feelings, father-in-law?"
"You've already proposed?" Hiashi suppressed his shock.
"Not in an official capacity, but Hinata insisted earlier today that she'd be my primary wife; she even set a limit on how many wives can be in my harem. You'd best abandon the preconception that your eldest daughter is too meek to be a proper Shinobi, Father-in-law; her compassion conceals an immense amount of steel." Naruto grinned.
"So it would seem; clearly, Hinata's love for you is far better inspiration than anything I could provide." Hiashi grimaced. "To my shame, Hinata often feels like an outcast within her own house. The Clan Head of the Hyuuga must be strong and unyielding, but the meekness you mentioned has been her most noteworthy trait for nearly her entire life. For the good of the Hyuuga, I was forced to strip Hinata of her title as heiress to the clan, favoring my second daughter, Hanabi, in her stead. I have been a terrible father to Hinata ever since, all because she resembles her late mother – my beloved wife – in both appearance and demeanor. I would not blame her if she used her marriage with you as an opportunity to cut all ties with the Hyuuga. Truly, I deserve nothing less."
"Otou-san, don't repeat those words or say anything like them ever again!" Hinata yelled. "I never cared about being the Hyuuga heiress; Hanabi-imoutosan is more qualified than I am for that role, both in her prowess with the Byakugan and her persona. The Hyuuga will benefit greatly with her as our next leader. You've been strict with me, but that was only to ensure that I would thrive as a Shinobi. Many nations would gladly kill me for my eyes; far worse, they could capture and drug me, forcing me to bear children wielding the Byakugan. Is that not the very reason why members of the Main Family are rarely dispatched on missions beyond Konoha's borders?
I'll not deny that life in the Hyuuga compound often seems stifling; however, it has always been others within our clan that looked upon me with distain. Never have I seen such behavior from you, so please, never believe – even for an instant – that you have disgraced Okaa-san by action or inaction. I love you, and I know you've always loved me, even if your obligations to our clan rarely permit you to openly display your true emotions."
Hiashi Hyuuga, a man believed by many to be the personification of nobility, gazed upon his daughter in awe. In the span of moments, his daughter has slashed through every doubt he had regarding both his worthiness as a father and his ability to fulfill his wife's dying wish: that Hinata and Hanabi were to be raised to be Shinobi without peer but – above all else – to be shown all the affection that a child needs to be of sound mind and spirit.
"This, then, is the 'steel' Naruto-dono spoke of? If so, I've only one thing left to say on the matter: Hinata, you have my blessing to court and marry Naruto-dono. Furthermore, in two days' time, I would like to invite everyone here to my manor for dinner to formalize what has been said tonight. Konoha will know that I favor this union. If anyone dares to say Naruto-dono is unworthy of my daughter, then I will savor the privilege of correcting their opinion in a manner similar to Naruto-dono's chastisement of his sinful instructors!" Hiashi declared.
"Why invite me?" Sasuke wondered. "I have no stake in Naruto and Hinata-hime's marriage."
"Not directly you don't, but you're the Acting Head of the Uchiha, remember? Naruto replied. "Like me, you're the only surviving member your clan; Itachi doesn't count since he's now a missing-nin. Having another Clan Head present during the official announcement of my engagement to Hinata, especially one loved by damn-near all of Konoha, will give the announcement a ton of extra credibility and silence a lot of citizens who, otherwise, would be inclined to either try killing me for my 'arrogance' or storm the Hyuuga compound in protest."
"Furthermore, your endorsement of our engagement will be of benefit to the Uchiha in the future." Hinata continued. "Both the common citizenry and, especially, the nobility of Konoha will remember that our marriage was favored by the Uchiha. As Naruto's achievements garner him more and more public favor, many will come to think that you recognized Naruto as a 'rising star' long before anyone else; as such, you will be partially credited for any merit Naruto receives. Do not think of this as stealing recognition that rightfully belongs to Naruto; you are his closest friend, and it is only natural that the rewards gained from the deeds Team 7 accomplishes be shared between all of its members. At first, many will think that Naruto is only successful because you and I are with him, but we have all the time in the world to change their minds, and change them we most certainly shall!"
"Very well spoken, my daughter and my future son-in-law!" Hiashi seemed to glow with pride as he praised Naruto and Hinata. "This arrangement is mutually beneficial for the Hyuuga, the Uchiha, and – most of all – the Namikaze and the Uzumaki. Naruto-dono will need immense support to reestablish his clans. Minato-sama's closest friends: Shikaku Nara-dono, Choza Akimichi-dono, Inoichi Yamanaka-dono, and myself, will gladly light the first sparks; however, the burden of ensuring said sparks become a blazing beacon heralding Naruto-dono's glory and honor falls to the three of you.
Now, as much as I would like to leave with only good tidings, there is a matter of grave concern that you three – especially you, Naruto-dono – must be made aware of. What do you know of a man named Danzo Shimura?"
"I've never heard the name, Otou-san."
"Doesn't ring any bells for me" Sasuke replied.
"I've heard the name a few times over the years; retired Shinobi, used to be a real big-shot. Pretty sure he was a Hokage candidate back in Tobirama-sama's day, but the Old Man beat him to it." Naruto said after racking his brain for a few seconds.
"Indeed, though his active days are long behind him, Danzo remains one of the most powerful Shinobi our village has ever produced." Hiashi explained. "Currently, he leads the civilian faction of Konoha's ruling council. He is a war monger, and would like nothing better than to lead Konoha into war against the world. Years ago, he created a subsidiary branch of our Anbu corps – codenamed Root – that answered only to him. Hokage-sama, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom, permitted this act of blatant rebellion initially; consequentially Danzo was able to cultivate a private army for years. Hokage-sama eventually ordered Root disbanded; however, we discovered today that Danzo obeyed this command only in the most superficial sense. A man wearing a headband bearing the insignia of Root was discovered dead two nights ago, upon the roof of this very building."
"Two nights ago was when the Old Man was showing Kakashi-sensei and I my new home. You're saying this Root bastard was tailing us? That would mean Danzo's been tracking my movements!" Naruto yelled.
"That is the supposition to which the three Clan Heads I mentioned previously and myself arrived, as well." Hiashi confirmed. "As Konoha's sole Jinchuriki, you are invaluable to any war plans Danzo has concocted. Though we have no proof, the four of us suspect that it was Danzo who leaked your status as a Jinchuriki to the general populace. Typically, a Jinchuriki's identity is heavily classified to prevent their capture by enemy nations. If Danzo was responsible, then he conveniently neglected to disclose that you are also Minato-sama's son.
While such a fact would have made you vulnerable to Minato-sama's enemies, it also would have done much to mitigate the stigma most in Konoha have regarding you. If everyone knew both facts, you may well have been regarded as a saint, keeping Kurama at bay with your existence alone. Undoubtedly, Danzo intended to force you into a state of extreme despair and would have approached you with a promise to acknowledge you in exchange for your obedience. As he is a master of Fuinjutsu, he would have been able to force your compliance in the event that you grew to distrust him in the future."
"In that case, it's quite ironic that his schemes were foiled by Hinata-hime's affections. Sasuke said with a smirk. "The bastard must have been screaming bloody murder every time one his Root cronies reported that she delivered another package of food or money to Naruto's apartment."
"Very much so, I imagine." Hiashi agreed. "Danzo will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, but capturing or assassinating my daughter ranks among the worst decisions he could ever make. Furthermore, attempting to steal or tamper with Hinata's gifts would likely have caused my daughter to redouble her efforts, potentially inducing a vicious cycle that could well have ended in Root's exposure. Danzo, in his shrewdness, would not have utilized such a tactic, regardless of how much he desired to."
"Hinata, you really deserve a reward for saving me twelve ways from Sunday all these years; how about two, no, three kisses for each gift? I kept count, you know." The lust adorning Naruto's face was only partially faked.
"Na-Na-Naruto!" Hinata flushed crimson, not knowing how to respond to her fiancé's proposal without losing the decorum their current discussion demanded.
"Hiashi-sama, you said the Root bastard that showed you that Danzo never obeyed Hokage-sama was found dead on the roof of this mansion. Your compound is right next door, did one of your guards kill him?" Sasuke asked
"No, the traitor was found dead by a Hyuuga guard patrolling the perimeter of my estate. This manor is protected by several barrier and anti-intrusion seals. Apparently, some of these defenses are fatal."
"Otou-san, I'm assuming the Root operative's body was collected for evidence." Hinata's lavender eyes narrowed in concern. "If the protections adorning Naruto's mansion react with such vehemence, then how was our guard able to retrieve the corpse unscathed?"
"I can answer that. Above all else, my castle's defenses react to protect the Clan Head and the structure itself. Hiashi was Dad's best friend, so it makes sense that the castle's seals wouldn't trigger for him or any of his guards if they meant me – or the castle – no harm." Naruto supplied.
"Well, hot damn; wish some of your clans' Fuinjutsu experts were born into my clan. Seals like that would have helped immensely on that night." Sasuke grimaced.
"Sasuke . . ." The trio lapsed into silence as they reflected on the Uchiha Massacre.
"Hem-hem." Hiashi coughed to recapture his audience's attention. "Earlier today, the aforementioned Clan Heads and I resolved to purge the cancer Danzo and his ilk embody from our beloved Konoha. It must be stated that this venture is entirely of our own design; Hokage-sama has given no such order. Frankly, we are abusing our authority to see this deed done, but Hokage-sama's disgust of Danzo was made abundantly clear in today's council session. We do not intend to conceal our efforts from Hokage-sama; on the contrary, the amount of manpower and resources we have dedicated to this 'emergency mission' is so vast that one bereft of all five senses would be able to perceive the abnormalities occurring on Konoha's streets as we speak.
The purge commenced approximately five hours ago; Naruto-dono, I would ask you and your teammates to remain in this mansion until the cleansing is complete. For the moment, things are proceeding with minimal resistance, but our actions will not go unopposed for much longer. Danzo's forces are numerous, and their prowess is an unknown quantity. Worse still, you are the ultimate cause of Danzo's current predicament, and he is an extremely vain man. It is plausible that he may strike at you, or those closest to you, out of petty spite before this ordeal is over."
"Understood, sir!" Naruto bowed.
"Excellent, however, this purge will likely not be completed for several days. I have no doubt this manor has sufficient supplies to ensure you three will not starve, but I trust none of you will succumb to other hungers before the proper formalities are observed?" Hiashi's eyes blazed with indignation. Hinata flushed with embarrassment, while a fox-like grin dominated Naruto's face.
"Father-in-law, surely you are aware of the psychological phenomenon that often occurs when someone is informed that they cannot do something?" Naruto's grin widened as Hiashi's glare intensified.
"Kidding, Hinata would never consent to anything of the sort before we're married, and while I am a healthy young male, I would never knowingly inflict any form of discomfort upon my first and truest love. By my honor as Clan Head of the Namikaze and the Uzumaki, I vow that Hinata's chastity shall not be lost until we are wed." Naruto swore.
"I shall hold you to that, young lord – to your very grave" Hiashi vowed in response.
"I must rejoin my fellow conspirators; I begged time away from our mission to ensure Hinata's safety, and I have long overstayed the reprieve they permitted. With luck, two more days will see the bulk of this dreadful work completed, and I shall be free to host the dinner we discussed earlier. Stay safe, all of you!" With that, Hiashi left the mansion.
Silence reigned as Naruto directed some Kage Bushin to clean up after dinner. His kitchen had a dishwasher but given the simplicity of the meal, he deemed it faster to clean everything by hand. As his clones worked, Naruto observed his teammates. Sasuke, naturally, was in full broody-Uchiha mode. No surprise there; Danzo's bullshit had no direct impact on him. Hinata, on the other hand, kept looking towards the entrance hall with extreme concern.
"Hinata, I'm not stupid enough to say Hiashi-sama isn't in any danger, but he's got Konoha's Jonin Commander and Intelligence Division Head supporting him in this mission. Short of Hiruzen himself, there's no one more capable in the village to be at his side. If he wasn't hospitalized, Kakashi-sensei would certainly be with him, too." Naruto softly grabbed Hinata's hand.
"I know; I just hate that all we can do is sit here in your mansion." Hinata laced her fingers with Naruto's. "Honestly, I don't know how you can bear it with a straight face. It sounds like Danzo's responsible for most – if not all – of your plight."
"Trust me; I'd like nothing more than to rip his entrails out and feed them to him but if we went out there now, we'd only be in the way." Naruto growled.
"Says the Genin who put a Jonin in the hospital!" Sasuke grunted.
"Sure, but did you realize how much he was holding back?" Naruto sighed. "Even against my Daiyoukai form, he had to restrict his movements and Jutsu use to a level where it would be feasible for me to get the bells. Kakashi-sensei's a living legend, known as the Copy-Ninja for having mimicked 1,000 Jutsu with his Sharingan."
"Wait, our Sensei has the Sharingan?!" Sasuke's eyes bulged in shock.
"Only in one eye; I don't know for sure where he got it from, but I do know he participated in the Third Shinobi World War. If he lost his eye during that war, he could have gotten a Sharingan implant from a willing Uchiha." Naruto clarified.
"Or he could have stolen it from the corpse of one my fallen brethren!" Sasuke pounded the dinner table with his fist.
"No! He'd never do that; Kakashi was my father's – Minato's – student, and he'd never disgrace Dad's legacy."
"Sasuke-san, Minato-sama was known to be an impeccable judge of character. Please, trust that he acquired his Sharingan with the consent of its original owner." Hinata cupped her free hand over Sasuke's fist.
"Fine, you win, Hinata-hime." Sasuke unclenched his fist. "So, dobe, you think you can't beat our Sensei now because he has a Sharingan?"
"That's a big part of it, but I'm also physically no match for him if he gets serious. Do either of you know what Kakashi-sensei is famous for besides his Sharingan?" Naruto asked.
Hinata closed her eyes in concentration and recalled a conversation from years ago. "I've heard some of the veterans of my family talking about him being fast enough to cut a bolt of lightning in half, before it hit the ground! Supposedly, he used his signature Jutsu to do it."
"That's right; a bolt of lightning travels at 224,000 miles per hour. At best, I was moving twenty times the speed of sound during the bell test; that's 15,345 miles per hour. Even if we assume that Kakashi's signature Jutsu vastly augments his movement speed, I'm sure he can move much faster than Mach 20 without it." Naruto hypothesized.
"Having said that, I have no intention of being so far behind Kakashi-sensei for long. We have, at least, three days to ourselves; we'll most likely get more since Kakashi-sensei will be called in to deal with Danzo's bullshit as soon as he recovers. If you're both up for it, I'd like to spend that time training and coming up with some team maneuvers. We did well against Kakashi, but I think I speak for all of us when I say there's room for growth."
"That sounds great Naruto! What type of training did you have in mind?" Hinata asked.
Naruto smirked at his teammates; "You're both going to learn the Kage Bushin no Jutsu!"
Chapter End
With this chapter, the opposite of my mentality for chapter 6 occurred. Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 were originally one chapter, but this seamed like such a natural stopping point that the second half of Chapter 7 became Chapter 8.
Parental figures in fiction that never even try to meet their children halfway when they're clearly struggling to master whatever powers are at play never fail to piss me off. As a noble, tradition and martial prowess should be important to Hiashi but they should never matter more to him than the mental/emotional well-being of his daughters. Since I don't want Naruto's father-in-law to be a complete dick, Hiashi got a much-needed dose of compassion added to his character.
Thank you for reading!
