Today is the day, Paul, he thought to himself as he gathered up his nerves and got in line at his favorite coffee shop. Today you will say more than just your coffee order and thank you. You're going to tell her your name.
He'd been coming to the Cafe Dune since he'd moved to Arrakis City Maine. Every day he'd get into the line and think of things to say to the beautiful barista behind the counter. Every day he'd come up with something witty to say. But when it was his turn in front of the beautiful girl he'd lose his nerve and just tell her his order. It had gotten to the point where Chani could tell him his order word for word. But she always let him tell it to her anyway. He guessed she felt sorry for him. The tongue-tied mess that he usually was in front of her.
But today was going to change. He was going to say something else besides his order if it killed him or not. Perhaps he'd ask her about the weather.
No that's a stupid topic. One that anyone could ask. I want to be different from the rest. Perhaps I could ask her what she's doing after work?
"Next in line," Chani's musical voice called, cutting through Paul's thoughts like a knife through butter.
"Hey, buddy, you're holding up the line," a man towards the back shouted.
Paul blushed furiously as walked forward and stood in front of her. Chani. She was the most beautiful girl he'd ever met in his entire life. Even more beautiful than his intended bride Irulan. Chani's blue eyes were warm and full of life. Unlike Irulan, whose eyes only ever said that she was bored with whatever they were doing.
"What can I get for you today, Paul?" Chani asked, smiling at him and causing the butterflies in his stomach to start a swarm. "Don't tell me. I think I know this by now. A spiced latte and a spiced muffin. Am I right?"
"You are," Paul said, looking in awe at Chani and her ability to remember everyone's order. "Thank you."
Chani looked around nervously and leaned forward to speak so that only Paul could hear her. "Do you think you'll stick around for a little while?" she asked, smiling a smile that made her eyes look more lively and lovely. "I'm going on break soon and I'd really like to talk to you."
She wants to talk to me, Paul thought his heart hammering in his chest. Be cool, Paul. You've got this. Just say yes.
"Of course," Paul said, smiling as he paid and walked over to where he usually picked up his order.
Stilgar was manning the coffee-making station as usual. He and Paul had struck up a friendship that no one seemed to understand. Not even Paul, himself. Paul was a teenager and Stilgar was around Paul's father's age. Perhaps it was because Stilgar was near his father's age that they got along so well. Paul having recently lost his father suddenly in a car accident had seemed to have found a father figure in the tan-skinned man with the dark hair.
"Back again are you?" Stilgar asked, looking over to see Paul waiting.
Paul had been there earlier in the day. The time he usually came in to get his coffee fix but he just couldn't help but return a second time. He wanted to ask Chani out on a date. He wanted so badly for her to like him.
"I've come for some of your sage advice, Stil," Paul told the older man, hoping to appeal to the fatherly side of his friend.
"Advice on what per se?" Stilgar asked, following Paul's gaze to Chani.
"Women," Paul said, smiling at Chani as she looked over to him and Stilgar.
Chani's heart melted when she the smile on Paul's face. She had fallen head over heels for Paul Atreides even though he had only ever said a few words to her. She could tell that he wanted to say more and she had decided to give him the chance today.
"It's time for your break," Jamis said, glaring in Paul's direction.
Ever since the first day that Paul had come into the Cafe Jamis had taken a disliking to him. Then again there weren't many people in this town that Jamis did like. He was just that sort of personality that screamed stay away if you know what's good for you.
"Thank you, Jamis," she said, handing him her apron and going to pick up Chai Tea Latte and spiced muffin.
"Don't thank me," Jamis called after her, glare plastered firmly on his face. "Stilgar said that I had to take over for your break. That's all."
"Well, thank you anyway," Chani said, smirking at Jamis' reddening face.
She walked over to where Paul and Stilgar were talking. She knew that her uncle Stigar had taken Paul under his wing as a father figure and mentor to the fatherless boy. She felt sorry for Paul having also recently lost her father too. She could understand the need to have that sort of fatherly bond.
"I'll just leave you two to it," Stilgar said, winking at Paul and then handing him his order. "Shall I?"
Paul chuckled and it made his eyes seem more alive than she'd ever seen them in all the time that they'd known each other.
"Do you want to sit outside?" Chani asked, seeing Stilgar's face drop and knowing he was hoping to overhear some tidbit of information.
"Do you?" Paul asked, watching her face as he spoke.
"It is very nice out today."
"Outside it is then," Paul said, walking towards the door to the cafe's little outdoor area. He held the door open for her. "After you, my lady."
"Thank you, kind sir," she said, stepping past him into the sunshine. She could feel the beat of it on her face which was tanned from all the time spent outside in her spare time. She liked to explore the woods and areas around the small home she and Stigar lived in.
She walked over to the perfect table for two. Its pale blue striped umbrella provided enough shade so that Paul's light skin wouldn't burn.
"What did you want to talk about?" Paul asked, settling into the chair opposite Chani. She could see him nervously biting his lip.
"What do you do when you aren't coming in twice a day to get your coffee?" she asked, smiling as Paul blushed at being called out like that.
"My days are rather structured," Paul answered, taking a sip of his spiced latte. "Being the heir of a big company like Atreides Holdings I have to learn the ropes of the business world. I won't be able to have others do the job for me my entire life."
"Don't you do anything for fun?"
It took a few minutes before Paul answered the question. "It has been quite some time since I did anything fun," he said, looking down as picked a chunk off his muffin and popped it into his mouth.
"But that isn't fair to you," she stated, sounding alarmed.
"I've always been busy being groomed to run the company when my father died," he told her. "When I did have free time it was usually spent fencing with my tutor Gereny Hallack or reading books."
"Do you think you'd like to come over and explore the woods near my house sometime?" she asked, not believing that she'd just done that. "I mean you don't have if you don't want or aren't allowed to."
"I'd love to," Paul said, smiling once more. "Perhaps we could meet up here tomorrow and go from there?"
Chani nodded.
The two spent the rest of the thirty-minute break eating and chatting about books and Chani's favorite places to explore. They'd almost lost track of time when Jamis stormed over and tossed the apron on the table between the two.
"You're late," he stated, folding his arms over his chest with a scowl etched deep into it.
"I'm sorry," Paul stated, standing up and gathering the used plates to take back inside. "We were talking and lost track of time."
Jamis either didn't hear the comment or didn't care either way he grunted and walked back into the cafe. He had never really been a people person which was what surprised her the most Stilgar had hired him on to work in the cafe.
"Sorry about him," Chani said, reaching to take the plates from him. "He's ju—"
"No need to apologize," Paul said, shaking his head and keeping the plates in his hands. "We all have a Jamis somewhere in our lives." He didn't mention that his own Jamis was his grandfather on his mother's side.
"Do you?" she asked, following Paul as walked to the door and opened it for him.
"I do," he said, smiling as she motioned for him to go before her. "I don't think you'd care so much about me if you knew who it was though."
"Fair enough," Chani replied, smiling at him. "Thank you for joining me for my break."
"Any time," Paul answered, feeling Stilgar and Jamis's eyes on them.
"I'll see you tomorrow then?" Chani asked, walking backward toward the door that led to behind the counter.
"It's a date," Paul said, walking over and handing the plates to Stilgar. He watched Chani as she took the register next to Jamis and started to help another customer with their order. Then he left the cafe to go back home.
I hope you all enjoyed Cafe Dune as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please let me know if you would like to see this continued.
