Chapter 1: The Second Prince
The relationship between the Kingdom of Ostania and the Kingdom of Westalis had always been tense, with the threat of war looming over every conflict they faced. However, things took a turn for the worse when the heir to the Kingdom of Ostania, Prince Demetrius Desmond, vanished while en route to Westalis for a supposed "peace treaty." Westalis claimed that the Prince never arrived, but Ostania didn't believe it, alleging that he had been kidnapped by Westalis. This event left King Donovan of Ostania devastated, and he fell ill while becoming consumed by the desire to recover his heir.
That was two years ago.
Seeing that his father, King Donovan of Ostania, had been more distant and hostile, the second prince, Prince Damian, took it upon himself to bring his brother back. He was determined to win the affection and approval he longed for from the king.
As an Imperial Scholar of the Kingdom of Ostania's elite school, Eden Academy, Prince Damian had access to special classes on the school grounds to train. He also delved deep into the history of Ostania and Westalis within the restricted section of the school library. Despite being a prince, his treatment changed after his brother's disappearance, as the King ordered him to be protected and confined within the walls of Eden Academy. This was something Prince Damian despised; he longed for freedom but was equally driven to help his Kingdom. He was even willing to miss his senior years and join the military ranks.
That's why for a year, he even tried to become a master of disguise, to train with the military to enhance his physical strength. He also infiltrated the King's inner circle to gain more intellectual strength for the impending war that would occur once the King declared it against the rival nation.
"Damian-sama!"
"Boss Prince!"
The prince with curly raven hair and slightly drooping hazel eyes, wearing his Imperial Scholar uniform, looked at his two blonde friends: Ewen Egeburg with spiked hair and Emile Erman with a bowl-cut hairstyle. Both of them hailed from the respected families of Earls, and right now, had panicked expressions on their faces.
"What?" Damian asked coolly, his hands in his pockets.
When they got in front of him, Emile looked around the school hallways to make sure no one was closely paying attention to them, aside from the usual admiring stares directed at the prince, before he whispered, "We couldn't find Glooman, boss Prince."
Damian's brows furrowed. He then turned around and continued walking. The two followed him as they continued to chat in low voices.
"I already relayed the message that you want to see him, but I couldn't find him after class," Ewen stated.
"What if he chickened out and reported us to Headmaster Henderson?" Emile asked, worriedly.
Damian shook his head. "Not happening."
Ewen agreed. "Glooman likes to be Damian-sama so much it's hard for him to snitch on us!"
"Shh! You're too loud," Emile warned as he looked around. No one had heard them, though.
As they reached their next class, they hoped to find the classroom empty so they could freely chat. However, they were surprised to see the topic of their discussion already there.
"George Glooman!" Ewen exclaimed as he approached their gloomy-looking classmate, who was sitting quietly inside the classroom. He appeared to be his usual self - gloomy, but his eyes were more alert than usual, darting in every direction.
"Where have you been? We were looking for you!" Emile asked.
After one last check to ensure that indeed no one else was around aside from them, George slumped on the floor, kneeling too close to the ground in front of Damian. "I'm so sorry, your royal highness! Ms. Blackbell cornered me, and I had to get away quickly!" He was in tears.
Damian's frown deepened. "Blackbell?" He was talking about their nosy brown-haired classmate who was the daughter of the chief of Blackbell Heavy Division, an infantry regiment of the Desmond Monarchy. Blackbell manufactured most of the military equipment for the king. It's going to be annoying if she's suspicious of the prince's activities.
George nodded as he wiped his nose. "Ms. Blackbell suspected something is going on with the three of you, royal highness, and she demanded I tell her the truth. I was so scared!"
The trio could understand George's sentiment. Becky Blackbell could be scary. Damian didn't expect her to catch on to something so quickly. It had only been recently that the outcast George Glooman had started hanging out with the trio, which might have raised suspicions.
"Did you tell her something?" Emile asked, almost panicking.
"Of course not! Over my dead body! The secret will die with me, your royal highness," George said, defiantly. "I just told her that your royal highness has started to hang out with me after the royal king acquired my father's apothecary guild for further research on medicines. I ran away after that!"
Ewen palmed his face. "If you ran away, she would've thought you lied and were making excuses."
Damian shook his head as he glanced at the grandfather clock in the room. It's about time for the next class. "Forget about Blackbell. Let's just be careful this week," he stated nonchalantly as he walked and sat in his assigned chair. The other three sat to their chairs too. "Though, Goodman," he called to his classmate who straightened in his seat, ready to obey any command. "This Saturday. At the usual place," he commanded.
George bowed. "Yes, Your Highness."
Damian then looked at his two worried friends. "You two, too."
Ewen almost rolled his eyes at the prince. "Of course. You couldn't really do this without us, Damian-sama."
This earned him a smack on the head from Emile. "It's an honor to serve our boss Prince, idiot."
Ewen wanted to hit Emile too, but their classmates were already entering the class, which made the two blondes regain their composure and transform into two respectable, or as Headmaster Henderson preferred to say, elegant Earls.
The week passed by without any more incidents as the Prince and the Earls and their gloomy acquaintance continued to hang out as if Becky Blackbell's suspicion wasn't hanging in the air.
The brown-haired girl would squint her eyes at the sight of them but didn't say anything else for that matter aside from the obligatory greetings.
"Good morning, Your Highness."
She would bow to the Prince but he knew that if she had other choices, she would ignore him blatantly but then duty calls her as the daughter of the chief of the military regiment so it was expected of her to be on good terms with the prince. Though Damian caught her glaring at him quite many times which he only answered with a condescending look. He knew the lady of the Blackbell family didn't like him. Well, the feeling is mutual.
"Hn." Prince Damian ignored her as he continued walking.
"Looking good, Becks!" Ewen greeted instead, smiling happily to the woman who only replied with a flip of her hair and marched away followed by her loyal followers.
Her treatment towards the Earls was indifferent just like those she deemed below her status. Well, she was known in the school to be a snob.
George Glooman held his chest after Becky left. "Whew! She scares me!"
Emile laughed as he patted his back. "You should get used to it." He then glanced at Ewen. "I can't believe you keep on greeting Blackbell when you know she will only ignore you."
Ewen shrugged. "Better keep doing that so she won't get suspicious."
Emile eyed his best friend but didn't say anything else.
The Prince didn't comment as his thoughts were already planning on what he was going to do this weekend.
"Here."
George caught the thing that the Prince threw in his direction. A mask. A mask of the prince's face.
George's hair was already styled the same as the prince's hair so when he put on the mask, it was like two Prince Damians were standing beside each other. It helped that they were of the same height, too. One dressed as a prince, the other one dressed as a...peasant.
Ewen wrinkled his nose as he tried to distance himself from the peasant prince aka "original" prince. "Damian-sama, I know you want to blend in with the commoners, but, do you have to smell like one as well? You smell like rotting onions!"
Emile laughed as he looked amazed at the two "princes". "I couldn't blame anyone who believed Glooman is the boss Prince. They're very identical!"
With that, Damian gave the squeamish George a knowing look. "Just don't talk." He warned. That would greatly reveal the facade they've been playing for a while now. "Let the two do the talking. I'm supposed to be in the study room today with these two so just stay there until I come back." He instructed. "Just watch out for Jeeves, though he should not be in the palace today."
"Y...Yes, Your Highness!" George even bowed which made Damian flinch seeing a version of himself doing that.
"And don't bow. I never bow to anyone." Damian firmly said as he put on the farmer's hat on his head.
Damian then started walking from the secluded part of the palace forest towards the high wall mixed with bricks and vines which he had climbed many times before.
"Where are you going today, boss Prince?" Emile asked, worriedly. Ewen looked concerned too.
They couldn't help themselves every time the Prince disguised himself as a commoner. What if the prince is caught? Not only they be punished severely or be stripped of their titles for helping the prince in his dangerous shenanigans but the scolding they would get from their parents was enough to run shivers down their spines. A lengthy grounding worthy of a new monarch is doomed to both of them.
They both gulped at the thought.
Prince Damian's hazel eyes looked at them seriously. "I need to investigate something in town. I'm relying on you all here."
Though dressed as a peasant, the poise and command of a Prince were still evident in him.
Emile and Ewen, so was George disguised as the prince, straightened as they all bowed respectfully to the Prince.
"Yes, Your Highness!" They said in unison.
Damian walked as he easily climbed the wall dividing his status as a royalty from the ordinary. Beyond these walls, he was no longer a prince but a spy on his journey to find his older brother.
"Anya!"
A young lady with short, light pink hair and expressive emerald eyes looked up from brushing the floor to see the inebriated middle-aged man who owned the orphanage where she grew up and currently works, even though she is now past the age for adoption.
"Yes, oji?" she meant uncle as she fixed the two black hair ornaments with bright yellow embellishments on her hair.
Oji didn't like those on her head, he said they looked like horns but acquainted it with one of her quirks.
"Bennet needs potatoes and carrots for the vegetable stew she's making tonight. The produce didn't grow yet in the garden. I'll be damned if they grow in this climate." He stated while frowning. "Buy those and don't forget my booze too." he handed her the money as he turned his back, mumbling something about how many mouths to feed and needing more money.
Though, constantly drunk and seems to neglect the orphans in this orphanage, Oji lets those past the age of adoption like Anya stay and "volunteer" here until they find a decent job in the kingdom.
Anya stood up, stretched her arms and then dusted her hand on her long dirty skirt. She smiled at the sight of the kids with their little heads peeking from their rooms.
Anya loosened her hair ornaments as she couldn't help herself to "peek" at the cute little minds of the children.
"We're having stew for dinner!"
"Stew for dinner, yehey!"
"I don't like carrots…"
"I'm hungry…"
"Can I steal Oji's snacks...?"
"Anya-nee is kind of slow though..."
"We might as well expect onion stew tonight..."
Anya put her hair ornaments back and the thoughts shut down right away as she smiled brightly at the kids.
"Don't worry, kids. I'll be back from town before dinner time!" She then winked at them. "I might get a good deal from the butcher and we'll turn vegetable stew to meat stew tonight!"
The kids enlightened up at the hearing of that as they drooled at the possibility of meat stew for dinner.
Anya marched happily towards the town. A big smile on her face.
