Chapter 10
Frisk kept moving forward as he indulged in his thoughts. And then, he tripped on something and fell on the ground.
"Ow, that hurt..." Frisk heard a voice nearby.
Frisk put an end to his thought process and looked around to see where the voice was coming from as he got back up. Then he noticed a nearby semi-transparent white object move. When it finally got up, Frisk's eyes widened. It looked like a ghost. It turned around to face Frisk.
"It hurts when you trip on me you know." The mysterious ghost spoke.
Frisk flinched at the moment when the ghost spoke. This was his first time seeing a talking ghost. The ghost wore two headphones on the sides of his head. The ghost wore a white jacket with two side pockets. He was not sure what to do in this situation. He slowly backed down, because the mysterious ghost could be one of the royal guards. Frisk was very scared as there was no one who would protect him this time.
Frisk screamed, "What are you?"
"Me? I am just a ghost." the ghost answered. "You… must be a human."
"Yeah, I am a human… Look, if you…. If you're with the Royal Guard or whatever, please don't kill or capture me."
"The Royal Guard?... No don't worry, I'm not with the Royal Guard. I'm just a musician just vibing here. I can't attack you even if I wanted to 'cause I'm a ghost-type monster. We're not able to attack even if we wanted to. Probably because we don't have magic or DETERMINATION."
Frisk finally calmed himself down upon hearing the ghost's words. He did not know why he could easily trust the ghost. Maybe, this was because the ghost seemed friendly.
The ghost said, "Oh by the way, I forgot to introduce myself to you, my human friend. My name is NapstaBlook. My friends call me Blooky. Nice to meet you uh…."
"Frisk… My name's Frisk… Nice to meet you, Blooky." Frisk answered instantly.
"So, uh…. What were you doing here when you stepped on me?"
"Nothing really… Just didn't notice you.."
"Oh I see… By the way, wanna hear my latest performance playing piano?"
"Uh…. Sure, why not..." Frisk reluctantly replied.
Blooky took out something that looked like a touch screen phone out of a box that he had hidden inside one of his side pockets. Then he started playing a strange tune which seemed to be from a piano. It was completely different from human music. It sounded like something that Frisk had never heard of before. Monster music was unique.
"Do you like it, Frisk?" Blooky asked with anticipation.
"Uh… Yeah, ofcourse, I do like it…. In fact….. I love it!" Frisk said as he forced a smile on his face.
"I'm glad you like it!" Blooky said, filled with happiness. "I'm definitely gonna play it on my next show!"
"Show?"
"Yeah, I perform in concerts and shows. I have the role of pianist. I'm the most famous pianist in the Underground."
"I'm sure you are... By the way, can you tell me where the seal is?"
There was a brief silence for a moment. Blooky's expression changed as soon as Frisk asked the question. Frisk wondered if he should not have asked the question.
Blooky asked, "Why do you wanna know where it is?"
"I just wanna meet up with Toriel" Frisk answered.
"Oh that reminds me… She's been working on the seal for a while today. I guess I'll tell you since you know her. She probably invited you to live with her by now."
"Yeah, she did. She doesn't seem to doubt me one bit."
"She's been like that for a long time now. That's her behaviour towards every human who fell down here. She really doesn't seem to suspect humans at all. Well, it's kinda obvious since she had a human as a foster child. She loved him a lot."
"Wow, I didn't expect that. . She actually had a human as a foster child?"
"Yeah, everyone was surprised, because we believed humans to be merciless killers and to possess huge amounts of killing intent, but…. That child proved that humans can be much more than just ruthless killing machines."
"So why are they targeting humans now? I heard that they captured humans who fell down here… And they tried to get me as well..."
"Well… You see….Our King…. He kinda lost his son 'cause another human attacked. This human was filled with killing intent. He killed a lot of us! The Prince… fought the human and he was defeated. The human probably thought that the Prince was dead and left him alone… We weren't able to save him completely … He's still in a coma. We don't know if he'll wake up…. And our King wants to break the barrier and free us all from the Underground while also searching for a cure for the Prince.. "
"So you're willing to sacrifice the lives of innocent humans? How cold-hearted of you. We're not some tools that you can use just so you can break the barrier and attack humans!"
"No, ofcourse not, there are some of us who believe that it's too cruel to do something like that to innocent humans…. All the monsters who live here in the ruins are banished monsters who rebelled against the kingdom for doing such awful things to innocent humans..."
"...Okay…"
Frisk did not know what else to say. He did not know what to think of monsters. Are they kind? Are they ruthless killers who disregard human lives? There were too many questions that were unanswered.
"Well… Shall we go then?" Frisk asked.
"Yeah, let's go." Blooky complied.
They started walking. Frisk was in deep thought again. He knew what Toriel had been saying was true. "Will I be able to reach the Suface at all?" Frisk thought.
Blooky noticed that Frisk was thinking deeply about something. Blooky figured that it would be best to leave Frisk alone for the moment because he believed that Frisk should take his time to accept that he cannot escape from Underground.
"What Toriel said…." Frisk said as he glanced up at the blue sky. "I should just give up on returning to the surface, right?"
"Yeah. You should. 'Cause it's pretty much impossible to break the barrier. There is only one way to break it. But we're not even sure about that. We have to test if it works." Blooky explained.
Frisk frowned as Blooky finished explaining. He knew that all the monsters that he met wanted him to forget about breaking the barrier and going back to the surface. He wanted to go back to the surface no matter what.
"Looks like I don't have much of a choice. I really hate this place." Frisk said with a voice filled with disappointment.
"Why do you hate this place?" Blooky asked in a curious tone.
" I just do. I mean I know that all you monsters are kind to me, but I just can't like a place where I'm forced to stay. It's obvious isn't it? I know you monsters don't like being trapped here for eternity. I already know that you hate this place as much as I do. It's natural, you just can't bring yourself to love a place where you're trapped in, can you?"
Blooky was silenced after that. Frisk was completely right about everything he said. Blooky did not like being trapped in the Underground. No monster liked the place. They have all been hating Underground ever since they were sealed in there. Blooky did not find any words to speak, and just nodded and continued on.
It did not take long for them to get to the place where the seal was. Both of them saw Toriel and a few other monsters gathered around a metallic flower-like object that was stuck to the wall. Toriel looked worried and it did not seem like they were getting anywhere with their investigations.
It took a while for Toriel to notice Blooky and Frisk, who were coming towards her.
"Frisk! I see that you've met Blooky." Toriel said as she threw a gentle smile at Frisk.
Frisk answered, "Yeah, he's nice."
"You took him in too, didn't you, Tori?" Blooky asked as he glanced at Toriel.
"Yeah… Every human who falls here needs help." Toriel declared.
"By the way, how's the investigation going?" Frisk asked before Blooky could say anything else.
"No good. We still don't know who broke it and how they managed to do that. We've fixed it, but no one should be able to break it like this. It's too powerful to break." Toriel answered with a worried look on her face.
"Wait… Is that a ...human?" Asked one of the monsters who were helping Toriel.
"Yeah, he's the human who fell here recently. I've been taking care of him." Toriel answered. "Just like before.."
"You never change, do you?" The monster said as it giggled. "I guess that's one of the good things about you."
Toriel did not say anything back. She knows that she is repeating the same thing she did before again. She could not help it. Ever since her foster human child died, she wanted to protect all the humans who fell down to the Underground. She did not want to see another loved one's death, but they all died. Guilt invaded her, because she let them all get killed. She did not want to make the same mistake with Frisk.
"Uh Toriel?" Frisk called.
"Oh, oh yes…. Sorry about that. What were you saying again?" Toriel said as she snapped herself back to reality.
Frisk glanced at Toriel. "Where's our house? I still don't know how to get home."
"We're a bit bar from home. You see, The Ruins is a huge place… So… Can you wait until I'm done with this? It won't take long now." Toriel said as she played with the metallic flower-like object.
Frisk frowned at Toriel with frustration as she said that. Frisk wanted to go back to the house so that he could look all over the house to find any source of reliable information.
Toriel did not notice Frisk's frown because she was too busy playing around with the metallic object.
Frisk asked,"By the way, that thing you're playing with is the seal, right?"
"Oh… Uh…. Yeah…." Toriel answered, momentarily breaking her concentration. "This… requires a lot of concentration… So… Please don't interrupt again…."
Frisk did not answer and looked at the other monsters, who were doing the exact same thing as Toriel. They looked more like dinosaurs. Frisk wondered what other kinds of monsters there were.
Blooky called out, "Um, Frisk..."
"Yes?" Frisk answered as he abandoned his thoughts.
"Wanna go for a walk? It's kinda boring, just staying here doing nothing." Blooky suggested.
"Sure, I'd love to!" Frisk complied gladly.
"We'll be going away for a bit, Tori. We'll come back later." Blooky said as he glanced at Toriel, who nodded in agreement.
"So… What'll you do now, Frisk? You know you can't escape from here." Blooky asked as they started walking away.
Frisk answered. "I won't give up that easily… There HAS to be a way to break free from here…. There has to be..."
Blooky sighed."If there really was a way, we would've already broken the barrier a long time ago."
"OR you just haven't found it yet…."
"There is a way to break free from here." A familiar voice came from a close distance.
Frisk knew whose voice it was and widened his eyes. It was the voice that he did not want to hear, the voice that he despised the most.
Frisk yelled out,"Flowey!"
Blooky flinched when Frisk yelled. Blooky was surprised to find out that Flowey was alive, since he heard that Flowey was dead on the previous day.
"Calm down, Frisk…. There's no need to scream now." Flowey said as he came into Frisk's sight. He was hiding behind a piece of wall the whole time.
"You… You should be dead! How're you even alive? Didn't Toriel kill you?" Frisk asked in a curious tone.
"HAH! Do you really think that weak attack could kill me? I was scared at first, I have to admit. I just protected myself at the last minute and escaped." Flowey explained arrogantly.
"Flowey…. Fancy seeing you here." Blooky said before Frisk could say anything back.
"Oh hello, ghost nerd. How's your awful music doing nowadays?" Flowey verbally attacked Blooky.
Flowey succeeded in reducing Blooky's self-confidence. Blooky did not reply. Blooky looked depressed after receiving Flowey's verbal attack.
"What do you want now, Flowey?" Frisk said as he frowned.
Flowey smiled. "Oh right… I heard your conversation earlier… You really wanna get out of here right? It's possible to break out of here. But to do that, we'll need your soul. Don't worry, I won't do anything to harm you. You're the final piece of the puzzle. You should be able to wield the power of the other 6 souls. If you join me, you'll get everything you want. What do you say? Not a bad deal, right?"
"No, Frisk, don't. He's lying. He'll kill you when he gets the chance." Blooky inserted himself into the conversation.
"Shut up, ghost nerd. No one's talking to you." Flowey said as he glared at Blooky, who did not say anything back.
Frisk laughed."In your dreams, Flowey. You must be stupid to think that I'd believe YOUR stories. I decline your deal. Now get outta here. You're not needed."
"I wish it didn't come to this, but you left me no choice. Say your prayers, Frisk. This time, there's no one to protect you. You shouldn't count on Ghost nerd here 'cause he can't use any magic.."
To Frisk's surprise, Flowey still could use his vine attacks. Flowey summoned vines from underground and launched them at Frisk, who barely was able to dodge them. Flowey used vines to attack Frisk again, this time, finally cornering him. Frisk had completely underestimated Flowey, thinking that Flowey could not use any attacks anymore.
Flowey laughed. "Did you really think I couldn't use any magic at all?"
Frisk felt frustrated and scared at the same time. Blooky was frozen in place, unable to do anything. Frisk knew that he would not be able to dodge any other attempts made by Flowey. Flowey attacked with his vines again. Frisk tried to dodge, but was not successful as Flowey grabbed one of his legs with vines. Frisk fell down on the ground, unable to move as Flowey tangled his vines on Frisk's other leg too.
Blooky screamed,"NO DON'T… DON'T HURT FRISK!"
Flowey used one of his vines to entangle Blooky as well. He summoned another two sharp-looking vines that had a yellow substance on them, which came out of the ground, just like all his vine based attacks did.
"I know that ghosts can't be killed by just attacking anywhere on their body. But it's a different story if you do damage directly to their souls though." Flowey said as he prepared his weapons to impale both Frisk and Blooky.
