Chapter 3 - Bulldozed

BPOV

I couldn't find any peace when I got back home. I kept fidgeting and being restless. Nothing held my attention. Of course the coffee I kept drinking might have had a hand in that. Still I was so keyed up I decided to go to the park with Jake.

I put him in the car and we headed off.

As soon as Jake spotted the park he was excited and I didn't stop him when I opened the car door and he bounded out with abandon. I smiled and locked the door after grabbing his leash and set off after him.

'Careful Jake.' I called after him.

I headed to the path without really thinking about it, Jake bounding around behind me, sometimes booping me with his snout as he passed. I kept my head down, lost in my thoughts as I walked the familiar path around the park.

'Watch out!' someone yelled, and I looked up slightly dazed and confused. I hadn't been paying attention at all to my surroundings it seemed. I glanced around if the shout had been meant for me, and as I turned around my eyes widened.

Barreling towards me with complete abandon were Jake and Mike. Roughhousing it seemed. And they were not paying attention to their surroundsings at all.

'Crap.' I muttered, just before both dogs knocked into my legs. I fell to the ground ungracefully, landing hard on my ass before my legs went up in the after after me. The wind knocked from my lungs and my head hit the floor.

Before I could get my bearings, two giant dog heads hovered over me and started slobbering all over me with their tongues.

'Get off! Go on! Mike, get back!' I heard his voice.

He tried to push Jake away as well, but that brought out Jake's protective side.

With a snap and a menacing growl, Jake was suddenly standing over me, hackles raised as he put himself between me and the perceived threat.

'uh…' I heard the trepidation in his voice. 'nice boy… I'm only trying to help her, Jake' he tried to soothe, but Jake wasn't having it.

I winced as my head throbbed, but I started sitting up slowly.

'Jake.' I barked out, putting my hand on his fur. 'calm down, boy.'

He let out a low whine but sat down on his haunches next to me. The man came closer carefully, keeping a weary eye on Jake. Then he turned his concerned eyes to me, still just as green as they had been that first time.

'I'm sorry, I tried to warn you.' he muttered.

I shook my head, wincing. 'No, I wasn't paying attention. I should have been.'

'Are you okay?' he asked.

'I think so.' I winced again as I felt along my head, finding a sizeable bump. I glanced down at myself, noticing my pantyhose had ripped and there were scratches on my knees. My palms were aching and bleeding slightly and my wrist was tender. I sighed and shook my head at myself. 'perfect.' I muttered. 'just perfect.'

'Are you hurt?' he asked.

'Just a bit scraped and bruised. I'll be fine.' I muttered.

'Are you sure?' he asked, his eyes took in my scraped and cuts and he frowned. 'I have a first aid kit in my car.' He glanced back towards the car park. 'I can go get it.'

'No, that's fine. I'm used to it.' I quickly assured him, not wanting him to go trhough any trouble for me.

He looked at me quizzically.

'I mean… I'm quite clumsy… so falling down is kind of normal for me. I just need a minute and then I'll be fine. I have some tissues.'

I pulled out some tissues and dabbed away the blood from my scrapes, carefully inspecting the little wounds for dirt. Of course they were full of it.

'I'm sorry, miss. But those scrapes really need to be cleaned. Please let me get my kit.'

I sighed. 'no, really I'll be fine.'

Then he turned chagrined. 'look lady, you took a pretty good tumble. You're not going anywhere until I check you over.' he said rather forcefully. and before I could protest, he stood up, bend down to put his arms around my knees and my shoulders and in a fluid motion lifted me up into my arms.

'What are you doing?' I exclaimed, my arms flying around his neck.

'Well I can see you are going to be difficult, so I'm just going to carry you to my car to get the first aid kit and clean those wounds to make sure you really are alright.'

'Put me down!' I yelled, getting gembarrased. It would be just horrible if he succumbed halfway to the car and dropped me.

'Nope.'

Jake barked as he trotted along next to us. 'Jake, knock it off.' I warned him. he whined again but shut up. Mike followed behind us.

'Please put me down.'

'No.'

I huffed out a breath and crossed my arms over my chest, trying very hard not to notice how strong this man was. His chest was firm and his arms thick. The muscles rippled enticingly as he carried me effortlessly through the park.

After five minutes of me feeling the most awkward I'd ever felt we reached the car park. Somehow he managed to dig through his pocket and fish out a key as somewhere a car beeped signalling it was unlocked.

He strutted over and opened the hatch of the boot. Then he set me carefully on the ledge. He wasn't even out of breath. He rummaged through his car for a moment and then produced a first aid kit. He didn't waste anytime but quickly opened it and pulled out the iodine and bandages.

'I'm really fine.' I protested again.

But he just looked at me and took my hand in his. He carefully cleaned the wounds and bandaged them up nicely.

'You've done this before.' I remarked.

He nodded, his eyes not leaving my knee now. 'I'm no stranger to cuts and bruises either.' He said. 'scrapes too. Had plenty of those.'

He bandaged my knee and then turned to face me. 'anything else?'

It took me a moment to realize he meant injuries.

'My wrist is a little sore and I have a headache.' I told him honestly. There was no point in lying, I doubt he'd let me leave before being absolutely satisfied I was fine.

'I'll check those in a moment.' he said, stowing away the iodine again and then pulling out two travel dog bowls and a bottle of water. He filled both bowls for the dogs and then turned back to me as they started slobbering. 'Which wrist?' he asked.

I held out the scarped one. 'I think I used it to catch myself. Probably a sprain.'

His long, nimble fingers caught my wrist and started travelling the skin. he asked me to make a fist and he pressed and pulled on my fingers. Then he carefully moved my wrist around, noting when I would wince.

'You're right, probably a sprain. But you'd do well to ice it when you get home.' He told me seriously. I nodded. Then his hands travelled my head, quickly locating the bump at the back. He frowned, but was satisfied it was just a bump quickly enough.

'I don't even know your name.' I blurted out suddenly. Then felt the familiar rise of blood to my cheeks, making me blush.

He smiled crookedly as he pulled his hands back and stuffed them in the pockets of his coat. 'It's Edward.'

'I'm Bella.'

'Nice to meet you.' he said smiling at me.

'I wish it would have been under different circumstances.' I sighed, feeling a bit chagrined that this godlike man had to be the one to witness my absolute mortifying tumble to the ground.

His smile fell a bit and he nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. 'Yeah, of course. I didn't mean to make it sound like I liked seeing you hurt… that would be weird.' He rambled nervously.

I smiled and shook my head. 'no it's fine. I know what you meant.'

He breathed out a breath and glanced down at the dogs. 'Do you walk here often? I don't think I've seen you around before, and now twice in a span of three days.'

'Usually only once a week. It's a bit of a drive.'

'Oh' he said, sounding slightly disappointed. 'I see.' it was silent for a beat before he cleared his throat. 'well, it was nice to see you again, I'm glad the dogs could play again. They seem to like each other.'

I nodded and looked down at Jake and Mike, they were lying side by side, looking up at us with those puppy dog eyes.

'Yeah, usually Jake's not a fan of other males, he mostly avoids them, but he seems to really enjoy playing with Mike here.'

'Mike's a big softy. He's also extremely submissive, so most dogs are just fine with him.'

'Jake's usually laid back, unless he thinks he needs to protect me.'

Edward chuckled. 'yeah, I kinda thought he was going to bite me for a bit there, can't say that that didn't scare the shit out of me.'

I smiled and shook my head. 'Nah, he wouldn't hav ebitten you, at most he would have nipped at you, to warn you.'

'Well that makes me feel better.' He chuckeled.

It was silent again and this time awkwardness crept in. So I cleared my throat and jumped off his bumper.

'Thanks for helping me out.' I said quickly. 'but I have to get going again. It's been nice meeting you.' I muttered before quickly snapping Jake's lead on and hurrying to my own car. 'See you around.' I threw over my shoulder and was gone before he could respond.
