Note: sorry for the late short chapter! And even though this chapter is titled "The hires" it only goes slightly into detail, focusing more on buck. The next few chapters will kinda be their origin stories
It had been a week since the 118 unknowingly quit, and Buck was rushing around trying to get stuff done. The renovations were underway and Buck still had to find new Firefighters. He hummed to himself as he looked over the huge stack of paperwork. As he picked up his selection of Firefighters.
Firefighter Noah David. Has been with DCFD for two years, and is a former USMC member.
Firefighter and Paramedic Matthew Smith, Has been with NYFD for 4 years. He has two civilian of Valor awards.
Firefighter and Paramedic Ivanka Volkov. Has been with Wichita FD for 3 years. Before that she joined the Army to gain citizenship.
And Finally, Firefighter Jordan Juarez. They have been with AFD for 2 years. They are a talented firefighter who has been shoved into floater duty for a while.
Buck smiled, these Firefighters would be with him during his shift. He stood and popped his knuckles. A set of familiar footsteps entered the room. "You figure out who you want yet?" Alonzo asked. "Yes sir!" Buck turned on his heel and handed the folders to his chief. Alonzo took a second to look them over before nodding, "They are a competent group!" "After dealing with Paramedic Han? Wouldn't have it any other way," Buck absent-mindedly responded. Needless to say that response got a good laugh out of Alonzo. A smile crossed Buck's face as he sent out the emails for the new recruits.
It had been a week, construction was done, and the first of the new Firefighters had shown up. Ivanka was the first to show up, then Noah, then Jordan, and lastly Matthew. The entire group was chatting away, getting to know each other. Everyone had gotten their new gear and they were excited for their new Start. Buck was leaning against the loft railing, he was smiling while looking over the group. Alonzo walked up next to him. "I see you made a good choice captain." Buck chuckled awkwardly, still not used to the title. "I did… I did…" He trailed off. He took a few steps back from the railing. He nodded Alonzo before heading down to the main floor. The others, noticing that he was down here incorporated him into the conversation.
Boots hit the ground in a steady beat, the team rushed to the trucks as an urgent alarm went off. There was a group of people stuck in a minefield, and with multiple veterans in the team, they were uniquely qualified for this mission. They pulled out of the firehouse as the alarms grew quiet behind them.
As the truck pulled up to the scene, a group of cops stood there, one of which Buck recognized as Jim Street, his former battle buddy and 2IC. "Street! Debrief!" He called. The rest of the 20-squad looked at Buck confusedly, "Buncha kids went in the minefield! They didn't hurt themselves, but there is a high chance they will!" Buck hummed in thought "Dogs?" He called back. Street solemnly shook his head. Buck hummed, "Well then, Smith, get the ladder truck, we're doing this the way they did down in Austin. Ivanka, you're with me."
Matthew backed the truck into place and extended the ladder as far as it'll go. Buck took a deep breath and threw the duffle onto the ground. And jumped.
The kids were being wheeled off to the hospital. Jim made his way over to the group, "That was a dangerous thing you did there Commander." Buck chuckled, "It's all in a day's work my guy, all in a day's work."
They went viral, the image of two Firefighters in an active minefield not only caught the attention of the media, but of the ex-118 as well. As Bobby looked at his screen, his face was a perfect mask of confusion, before a thought struck him. Of course! Buck is in the hot seat temporarily, and they were all floaters!
Buck chuckled as he looked at his new team, maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all!
