"Thirty-seven... thirty-eight... thirty-nine... four-"
"Hey hey Matthew-kun!" Loki shouted with a smile, causing me to lose focus and collapse on the ground.
"Are you alright Matthew?" Lili asked, stepping off of my back. I groaned an affirmative before pushing myself back up from the ground. I really did need to focus on my body more. I should be able to do more than forty pushups even with Lili on my back. I had god's blessing, I should be practically superhuman.
"Hey Loki. Got something for me?" I asked stretching my sore arms and watching Tiona and that blonde elf bring a wagon of monster corpses into the church. Thankfully I had already moved all of the pews to the side when I was drawing my ritual circles.
"Matthew-kun where do you want these stinky monsters?" Tiona asked with a big grin.
"Just throw them in the corner, I'll take care of them later." I said before turning to the elf, "And you, I never did get your name."
"I am Lefiya Viridis, and I won't lose to you!" She proclaimed loudly with a determined look in her eyes.
"Lose to me?" I asked. Rather than giving a proper response the elf just huffed and turned her head away from me like a child would. "Okay then?"
"Matthew my girls are here to learn from you, but I got a few ground rules." Loki said slinking up to me and putting her face directly in mine. Her forehead was literally pushed against mine as she made a really ugly face. "First things first is that there will be absolutely no touching."
"I wasn't planning-"
"Two! They are to remained clothed. I don't want you peaking at my girls secret treasures."
"Loki I think you have the wrong idea about me. I'm-"
"And finally, there will be absolutely no seducing!"
"Yes ma'am." I just agreed. She wasn't going to let me get a word in otherwise it seemed.
"Good, now anythin intrestin goin on in yer neck of the woods?" She asked with a foxish smirk.
"I made it to the eleventh floor, and we fought a dragon. But if you're talking about the other stuff, then Pride hasn't found anything suspicious yet. The guy just went around town flirting with women all day and spent all night drunk." I told her as she nodded along.
"I'm havin a meetin with him em later. I don't think anything'll happen, but you'll keep an eye on me wontcha?" The goddess asked while making a kissy face and latching onto my arm. I put my free hand in front of her face to stop it, but she just started licking my hand.
"Ew Loki stop!" I said wiping my hand on my pants.
"Yeah Loki. Stop." I heard Hestia say in a scary voice. Suddenly the atmosphere became very hostile.
"Well if it ain't loli big boobs."
"What are you doing here shrimp?"
"Your precious little child here promise to help hunt some eh... what did you call em?" She stopped midway through her staring contest to ask me.
"Terrorists?"
"Yeah that! We're huntin terrorists!" Loki proclaimed enthusiastically.
"You look awfully grabby for someone hunting terrorists you damn cutting board." Hestia said causing Loki to start growling as she dug her nails into my arm. It didn't actually hurt due to my defense, but I could tell that Loki really didn't like that.
"I agree with goddess Hestia. you're too close." Lili spoke up, grabbing my other arm.
"I'm being assaulted on two sides!? Lefiya, Tiona help!" Loki cried.
"No, I think they're right as well." Tiona said pushing Loki off of my arm and grabbing onto it herself.
Okay, at first this was amusing, but now it bordered onto unfunny rom-com territory.
"That's enough! Hestia, it's important that we work with Loki to find these terrorists, please be nice. Loki, please don't antagonize my goddess." I said sternly. My words met by two pouting goddesses.
"But Matthew!" The goddesses said in sync.
"No buts. Hestia, if you can't play nice with Loki then why don't you go spend some time with Bell?"
"I have to make sure the fox goddess and her temptresses don't steal you away!" Hestia cried indignantly.
"Hestia I don't think that's something you need to worry about." I deadpanned. Hestia huffed to my response before making her way into the cellar. No doubt to bother Bell as he was reading my spellbook.
"Booo."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Awww."
"Did you want my help or not? I still have to make those supporters for you afterwards" I said in a huff. It was actually pretty rude of me, but I was getting tired of this bit.
"Fine fine. I'm leaving in a minute, but I gotta question for ya first."
"Yeah?"
"Those undead. Do you know any other way they could get made?" She asked. Kind of a weird question. I should be the only necromancer in the world, unless someone else got isekai'd as well.
"I suppose undead can be created anywhere there's a corpse and enough ambient necrotic energy, but they would be no different than monsters in the dungeon. Recklessly attacking anything that isn't them." I told her.
"That so?"
"I'm pretty sure. Why?"
"Just curious."
Loki was obviously hiding something, but I wasn't interested in sticking my nose into that business. If Loki was behind that attack I would eat my own shoe. No way she was the bad guy the whole time. If she was sus of me then it didn't matter because I'm innocent. Besides, everyone in her familia is level three at minimum. If she wanted, she could simply erase me from existence anyways.
"Alright, I gotta meetin to attend. Don't you have too much fun without me." She said with a wink. Thank all the gods Pride wasn't here though, I couldn't imagine the bird's jealousy at the goddesses sudden flirtation.
Sighing deeply I handed over the two stacks of paper I prepared last night to the two girls before me. "Alright, take a chance to read these over. If you have any questions, ask me. There are no bad questions here. You will be summoning a sapient creature and its important you know what you're getting into. Important disclaimer is that your falnas will... influence the spell away from its original mechanics, that's what these ritual circles are here for."
"How will we be capable of summoning a sapient creature? Where does it's soul come from?" Lefiya asked while glossing over the paper.
"The soul will be coming from another plain of existence. The fay realm to be more specific."
"What's a fey?" Tiona piped up despite being absorbed in the paper. Maybe it's a little bit racist, but I had assumed the elf would take studies more seriously than the 'race of warrior women'. I was pleased to see she was taking this seriously though.
"Fey are a magical species closely tied with nature and are typically mischievous. Their personalities will vary wildly though so I can't promise what you'll be summoning will act a certain way. This is important for the relationship you'll be forging though. While your summon must obey your orders and can't act against your will I do advise against treating them poorly."
"Oh oh, is it possible to summon something other than a fey? Like my great, great ancestor or something? Tiona asked with a sparkle in her eyes. While I couldn't be one hundred percent certain that they wouldn't summon an ancient ancestor or something with how that falna disrupted my spells. I was reasonably certain that wouldn't be the case despite that.
"Mucking with souls like that is a necromancy thing. Find Familiar is a conjuration spell." I said causing Lefiya to frown.
"Only gods can manipulate souls." She practically growled.
"Says who?" I responded causing her to crumple the papers in her hand. Hey! I know you're angry, but I worked hard on those! "Anyways, as it says in those papers I gave you that the end result of the spell you learn will have slight variations. Due to the nature of the spell those deviations are best curtailed. That's the purpose of the circles you see on the ground. Everything you need to cast the spell is on the instructions I gave you, but if you need help don't hesitate to ask. Better safe than sorry."
With the two girls now more focused on learning the spells I turned my attention to the pile of corpses now laying on the ground before me. The monsters they brought me were a weird looking biped. Naked pig like faces with the rest of their heads being covered in fur. Visually they were repulsive, but t I would be lying if I said they wouldn't make for good supporters. The pig creatures had large and wide backs and muscular arms. No doubt they would be able to carry a ton on their backs or carry large objects in their arms.
I was able to use my four spell slots to pretty much instantly raise the crumbling dead. I would have used it as a cantrip, but as it turns out, Crumbling Dead couldn't really be used that way. There wasn't enough 'juice' to the spell to make it work properly. I could still raise them, but they were so weak they would literally crumble and fall apart if they started carrying too much. Something I could probably use to create a lot of disposable bodies in an emergency, but not practical for my business. After about three hours and three more zombies I heard a loud triumphant cry.
"Check it out, isn't she so cute?" Tiona said gleefully holding a grey and white kitten. The kitten mewled nuzzling against the Amazoness' hand.
"Congrats Tiona. You're a fast learner huh?" I said with a smile meeting the girls own beaming grin. "If you'd like you could head home or stay here with Lefiya."
"I think I'll stick around until Lefiya is done." She said grinning ear to ear. And speaking of the elf she was looking really frustrated.
"Hey Lefiya, you need any help?"
"I don't need your help human!" She spat.
"Did I do something to make you this mad?" I asked. She seriously couldn't be that mad about me pushing her that one time.
"You arrogant human! First you had to touch me, but now you go about bastardizing the laws of magic and act like it's nothing. I'm the student of the elven princess and It's a joke that you think you could teach me magic." She said clenching her fists. Ah... racist elf trope.
"Listen I don't know what you were taught about magic, but magic is in pretty much everything. Magic makes this world as it is. If it helps you can think of magic as the language of the world. String the sounds together properly and you get proper words, or spells. I just happened to know some words you don't."
'Master. Loki wants you to call Tiona and Lefiya to her'
'An emergency?'
'Something to do with Aiz'
"Lefiya, Tiona, I know this isn't a great time but Loki wants you at the dungeon. Something has happened to Aiz." I told them right as it looked like Lefiya was about to shout at me again. Her demeanor changed almost instantaneously. The girl looked like she was about to cry and scream moments ago. Now it looked like she was she was going to enter a full blown panic.
"Is Aiz safe!? What happened?!" She practically screamed in my face.
"Relax, Pride was watching over Loki and she mentioned something about Aiz in the dungeon. Loki didn't look like she was worried, so I doubt Aiz is in any real danger." I said calming the elf down.
"Ah, so she's probably just training in the dungeon." Tiona said with a chuckle.
"I guess. Well, Lefiya you can head back any time if you want to give the spell another shot." I said trying to appease the elf, but she just huffed and marched off to the dungeon.
"Thank you for teaching me Matthew-kun." Tiona said with a quick hug before she skipped off to the dungeon after Lefiya.
"Master is an unfaithful womanizer." Lili said from behind me giving me a spook.
"How unfair." I muttered to myself. What have I done to deserve this. I just wanted to enjoy this new world, learn magic and hunt terrorists. Why do girls have to be so complicated? "Sorry Lili."
"Lili will forgive you if you tell me more about your home." She said with a soft smile. Oh she wants to know more about my home? Easy!
"Sure, I grew up in a pretty rural state in my fathers mansion." I began before I realized that didn't feel quite right. My family wasn't wealthy enough to have a mansion. No wait, we were nobility... No, America didn't have nobility. The more I thought about my upbringing, the less I could actually remember. "I grew up with my three older brothers... no my younger brother? No?"
"What about just your home if you don't feel comfortable talking about your family?" She said holding my hand. I didn't know what was interfering with my memories, but that was something I could worry about later.
"Yeah alright, back home we did things a little different than here in Orario. Like I said earlier there wasn't any dungeon or monsters back home so people could live their lives in relative harmony spending their spare time as they please. I would usually study magic with my father or mercantilism with our head butler Reginald." I began before realizing that was also wrong. Magic wasn't real, at least before I came here. It was all just a game. I was actually a... my job was a...
Whatever magic brought me here must have fucked with my head more than I initially realized. Why couldn't I remember about my own life? As I thought more about my homeland I wasn't even certain my memories about that were clear. I mean, I know for a fact that American knight captains didn't still use swords, but why did I remember Captain Katain's enchanted blade so vividly? He was there for my tenth birthday. The same birthday my father bought me a horse. I had asked him to show me the sword in action then he used it to cut a tree down in a single strike much to my father's chagrin. The sword had been a gift to him from the king... There was definitely something wrong there. The king... There's not supposed to be a king. I think?
"Are you alright Matthew?" Lili asked sounding concerned.
Not wanting to worry her, I held onto her hand and gave her a reassuring smile. "My memory is just a bit cloudy. I'm sorry Lili. Once I'm powerful enough I'll be able to go home anyways. I'm sure visiting yourself will be a lot more interesting than stories from fuzzy memories."
"I'm holding you to that." She said with a grin.
After that I had tried to go back to raising the dead for Loki's familia, but after about five hours straight of preforming the ritual I had only actually completed three more undead. I was so distracted by my faulty memories I had misscast twice. Well, half in one day isn't bad. I should probably give it a rest for now though. I decided that a quick romp through the dungeon would help clear my mind. I made sure to tell everyone before I left. Lili was a bit concerned, but I was able to calm her down. I was only going to fight some monsters on the first few floors.
The entire way to the dungeon I had tried to remember more about my past, but nothing came about it. I couldn't remember my own mother, my father. Hell, I didn't even remember if I was the older or younger brother. If I only had the one brother or three. Punching goblins to death did feel good for a while, but the distraction didn't last long.
The only way I'd be able to bring back my memory is to head home it seemed. That was just annoying because I wouldn't be able to do that until I was able to cast tier seven spells. Assuming that each tier took longer to achieve than the last, it could mean I'd be here for years. Even decades. I wasn't afraid of being bound to this world though. Hestia and Bell were practically family and Lili was the first girl I've ever bothered to have a relationship with. I was just upset that my past was slipping from my grasp. Would this memory issue persist even in this world? Would I forget when I first met Bell or when I saved Lili? My inner musings were cut short as I heard heavy footsteps behind me.
