Chapter 5

Jane walked to her side of the apartment. Maura and Liz were laying on their stomachs, in Jane's bed, and Maura was browsing online catalogs of teenage clothes, that Liz was commenting on.

Jane shook her head, and cleared her throat, to catch their attention.

"Hey, Jane… We didn't hear you…" Liz patted the space by her side – Maura was on one side of her, Liz patted the other side for Jane.

Jane plopped herself on her stomach.

"So you are doing some online shopping?"

"Online browsing…" Maura corrected her, trying to stifle her laughter, knowing all too well Jane's opinion about it.

Jane rolled on her back, placing her arms crossed under her head.

"So I talked to my friend, and he will try to find out more on what happened in these past five days. Until he finds a bit more, you stay here with us. Are you okay with that plan?" Jane inquired, both to Maura and to Liz. Maura immediately nodded.

"If it is not too much trouble…" Liz offered, shyly, looking from Maura to Jane.

"Nothing we can't accommodate…" Jane replied, playfully. "What do you feel like eating tonight? I was thinking about ordering a peperoni pizza."

Liz eyes glistened. "I like that plan."

"Mushroom pizza for me…" Maura added quickly.

"I know your order, Dory… Are you all hungry? It will take about one hour for it to be delivered on a Saturday night."

"I will be hungry in one hour." Liz added quickly.

Jane chuckled. "I know I will too, that is why I asked to order now. Dory?"

"Yes, yes, yes…" Maura chuckled.

Jane placed her order – medium peperoni pizza and a small mushroom pizza. That way the grease of the pepperoni would not mix with the mushroom, something Maura complained about since she and Jane met. And there would be plenty of peperoni pizza for Jane and Liz.

Then, she moved to set up the table for them. Place matches, plates, cutlery, glasses, napkins.

Maura and Liz moved to the living room, and Maura offered Liz to pick a movie for them all to watch together. They were still choosing when the doorbell rang, and Jane picked and paid for their food, closing the door.

"Dinner is served!" she announced, after opening the boxes and setting them by their places.

Maura came and sat by her place by Jane, and Liz took the other place.

Jane served a juicy peperoni pizza slice to Liz, before serving Maura a mushroom pizza slice, and placing a beautiful peperoni pizza slice to herself.

Jane had poured wine for Maura, and popped a beer for herself.

"Soda, juice, or water?" Jane offered Liz.

"I only have soda with pizza, if I may."

"Of course." Jane opened the can and poured it on Liz' glass.

They ate in companiable silence, Jane and Maura observing the obvious pleasure Liz was deriving from eating her favorite food. And now that she was not half-starved, they could confirm her manners were really good. She clearly had not been raised on the street.

They all went for seconds, before feeling satisfied.

While Maura now filled the dishwasher and stored the leftovers, Jane went with Liz to pick the movie. So when Maura joined them, they had made a choice.

Jane opted for a superhero movie, not exactly something Liz would find too childish, but also something that would not be too emotionally charged. Jane knew all Disney and Pixar movies orbited around family, and that would be a sore topic for Liz right now.

They watched the movie, Maura all the time intervening for the impossibilities in the scenes. Jane had to explain to Liz that Dory was a genius, and then both Jane and Liz would only reply to Maura's questions saying it was all make-believe, what still didn't satisfy Maura but made Jane and Liz giggle, and Maura would just harrumph in indignation after a while.

It was fun and relaxing.

Jane walked back to her bedroom with Liz, explaining she would sleep there until they heard more from Jane's friend. Jane showed her how to control the lights, and told her that if she needed anything, she just needed to knock on Jane and Maura's bedroom door.

The girl brushed her teeth and hugged Jane and then Maura goodnight, surprising them both with her gesture, that both returned.

Jane closed the door behind them once they reached their own bedroom.

"What did Dean say?" Maura went straight for the kill, she had been super curious to ask Jane since Dean had left, but didn't want to ask it in front of Liz.

"He said that if a kid didn't witness the original crime or the killing of the parents, they would not keep the kid in WitSec. They would put the kid in the foster system and let things follow its course – typically on a teen shelter until they turn eighteen, since teenagers are not often adopted. But if the kid had been a witness either to the original crime or to the parent's killing, they would go to a teen shelter manned by WitSec, until by eighteen they would become witnesses themselves and go through regular WitSec."

Maura nodded her understanding.

"I found the news of her parents shooting on the internet, I showed Dean – without giving him any details that we had her here or how we found her – and he said he would check what he could find about it and get back to me. But he asked us to be careful…"

"I know. And I know you have been careful…"

"I am sorry…" Jane kissed her lovingly. "I know home is where you are supposed to be able to be you. I promise it is only while we are helping her..."

"No need to apologize, Jane. I am in total agreement with you. It is for a perfectly good cause. When you speak with Dean again, could you please find out what they will do about the bodies? I want to make sure they get a proper burial…"

Jane looked lovingly at Maura. She never understood why people called her cold, detached, Queen of the Dead. Jane had never met anyone as compassionate as Maura was.

"I will find out from him, I promise…"

"Poor thing… Seeing her parents killed like that…" Maura shuddered, and Jane was sure the image of Hope shot in the head was right front of Maura's mind.

Jane hugged Maura tightly. "It is very heavy stuff for a kid… I am surprised about what she managed to accomplish on her own these past few days…"

"Yes, but she is exhausted. Physically and emotionally. I suggest we keep our door opened. I can almost bet that the moment she relaxes in her dreams, she will have nightmares. She is just a kid…"

Jane nodded, and as soon as both were ready for bed, they opened their door.

Maura laid down with Jane spooning her, and let sleep take over them.
