Poseidon remembered when he had a concussion when he was around Percy's age. Zeus tackled him into a tree playing football and his head smacked against the trunk of the tree. It was one of the most miserable weeks of his life. - Chapter 9 Treading In The Unknown
20 Years Ago
Poseidon leaned against the trunk of the tree bored out of his mind. Two days prior a powerful storm knocked out their power, leaving the sixteen-year-old's options of entertainment limited.
The house was too warm for him to be in there comfortably until the power turns back on. It's one of the hottest summer's New York has ever had, hence why he's taking advantage of nature's cooling powers.
His mother left to do errands - he never knows what those were. His sisters were busy helping Hades pack for his dorm for college, and Zeus was poking the ground with a stick - he's not going to question it.
He wished more than anything he had a pool, but they didn't as Zeus had a phobia of drowning, and whatever Zeus wants he gets.
Poseidon huffed, annoyed. He never once been the center of his mother's eye, that was reserved for Zeus. He vowed if he would ever have children, they wouldn't be subjected to favoritism.
He slumped his back further into the tree, trying to submit his body to the shade. He closed his eyes, the shade brought some relief, but it was no match for the summer heat.
"I'm bored".
Poseidon cracked an eye open unaware on how much time has passed, apparently it was enough for Zeus to abandon the stick and stand before him.
"And?"
"And there's nothing to do!"
"What do you want me to do about it?"
"I don't know? I just want something to do."
"Why don't you go visit Hera, or Leto?"
Zeus grimaced, "I don't want to visit Hera, she's not pleasant to be around while she's pregnant."
"And who's fault is that?"
"You're not helping!"
"What about Leto? You didn't get her pregnant again, did you?"
"No! It's just the twins are crying all the time!"
"I guess you're not that bored then."
Zeus shoulders slumped as he leaned his head back and groaned like a child.
Poseidon closed his eyes again expecting Zeus to go bother Hades or his sisters.
"There's a football in the garage."
Poseidon frowned as Zeus didn't go away but stood in the exact same spot.
"It's a million degrees out and you want to play football?"
Zeus shrugged, "It's better to melt while playing rather to melt by existing."
Poseidon grumbled, he just gotten somewhat comfortable. If he denied Zeus's request he would get a migraine from his whining.
"Fine, go get it."
Zeus practically skipped towards the garage as Poseidon stood from his spot. He glared at the sun, cursing it for its extreme temperature. He wiped the sweat off his brow in disgust, maybe they need to file another complaint for the power to get fixed quicker.
Zeus came out of the garage with the football in hand.
"How are we going to play with just two people?"
Zeus shrugged before tossing the football to him. Poseidon caught it and was about to toss it back, but furrowed his brow as Zeus was running at him.
"What are you-"
Poseidon never finished the sentence as Zeus tackled him into the tree, his head connected against the trunk of the tree.
"Don?"
A hand shook his shoulder, his head pounded like crazy and he was very nauseous. He groaned, willing for the pain to stop.
"Poseidon can you hear me?"
He opened his eyes and four blobs appeared in his line of sight. He blinked trying to clear his vision but to no avail.
"How did this happen again?" A male voice asked, the two previous voices were female.
"Well we were playing football. He had the ball so I naturally went to tackle him which he didn't resist, and he hit his head on the tree."
"I don't know if his head is bleeding. Demeter, Hades, help him sit up and I'll check."
Two arms grabbed him and forced him into a sitting position. The motion caused Poseidon to lose control of his nausea and he projectile vomit on someone he couldn't quite make out.
"Gross! He puked on me!" A whiny voice cried. That must be Zeus.
A snort followed by a "Serves you right". That must've came from Hades.
A soft hand raked through his hair, "I'm not seeing any bleeding, which is good. I'm worried as he hasn't said anything."
Poseidon raised his eyes to try to meet his sister's but flinched as the sun's blinding light. "I'm fine."
"You would be if you've eaten your cereal this morning."
"Really Demeter? You're not helping." Hestia hissed. "Poseidon, what month is it?"
"April?"
"It's late July, Don..." Hestia let out a sigh, "We need to take him to the emergency room. Hades you'll be with me. Demeter and Zeus will stay here and inform mother when she gets back."
"Why do I have to tag along?" Hades grumbled.
"Because I need help getting him in and out of the car. You're the strongest out of all us and I'm not letting you be alone with Zeus after what happened the last time."
"Fine."
Poseidon vision started to clear, Hestia held his arm with one hand and her other hand rested gently upon his head. Demeter was standing besides Hades looking at him in concern, and Zeus was standing still in shock covered in vomit.
"Do you think you can stand, Don?" Hestia asked.
Poseidon nodded slightly weary of his head movements. Hades offered him a hand and he took it.
As soon as he put his full weight on his feet, he began to topple over. He would've face-planted onto the ground if it wasn't for Hestia and Hades catching him.
"We're going to go now. Zeus go and rinse off, Demeter make sure the house is clean for when mom gets home." Hestia ordered taking one of Poseidon's arms and leading him to the car.
She gently helped him to the backseat while Hades took the keys and started the car. He waited before Hestia buckled in before driving to the nearest hospital.
"What happened?" Hestia asked gently once they were on their way home.
"I thought Zeus wanted to toss the ball around, but he took me by surprise and tackled me."
"You let him?" Hades raised the brow as he turned onto their street.
"I didn't know what he was doing? One moment he tossed me the ball and the next he was running at me."
Hestia sighed, "On the bright side, the power seems to be fixed."
Hades parked the car in the driveway outside of their house, sure enough all the lights were on.
"Finally." Hades mumbled getting out of the car.
Hestia stood outside of Poseidon's door waiting for him to get out. Poseidon waved her off, he was much better than he was three hours ago. They were at the emergency room for over two hours running tests to see the severity of his concussion.
Hestia nevertheless stayed at his side as they made their way into the house. Their mother was waiting for them.
"You puked on your brother?"
"Mother he has a concussion, he couldn't help it."
"Well he should've aimed it somewhere else, your brother could get sick at the germs you spewed at him."
"I'm sorry, mother."
Rhea shook her head dismayed at her fourth child. "Just be thankful it wasn't your father." She walked back into the kitchen, her heels clicking on the hardwood floor.
Hestia rubbed his shoulder, "C'mon, let's get you to bed."
