BEOWOLF

DEVORATOR LYCANTROPHOS FAMILIARIS

Overview: Out of all the unholy species of Grimm that profane our world with their presence, none of them have reached the same level of recognition, infamy, and enmity accrued by the common Beowolf. They are at the forefront of any Grimm Incursion no matter how big or small, and when compared to their brethren, they more than make up for their lack of specialized abilities with unrelenting savagery.

Physical Description: Beowolves are enormous beasts that bear heavy physical similarities to the Canidae family of mammals, which include dogs, wolves, and coyotes. They can reach up to 4 meters in height when fully matured. However, due to their top-heavy builds and slouching gait, they tend to appear shorter than they really are.

Beowolves have matted black fur that is notorious for retaining the odor of blood and viscera for up to several weeks. Beowolf teeth can measure up to 18 cm long, and the largest recovered Beowolf claw is 30 cm long. They also possess tails that, on average, measure up to 1.5 meters long. They are facultative bipeds, meaning that Beowolves can move on two legs if need be but prefer to move on four legs. Their forelegs are noticeably stockier than their hind legs.

Similar to every other Grimm, Beowolves possess glowing red eyes and osteoderm (external bony plates) that envelop their face and limbs. They are streaked with bioluminescent orange veins that intensify in glow the more agitated they become. Their bodies are dotted with numerous spikes, also comprised of osteoderm.

Besides their Telltale Heart (located in their abdomen) and a skeleton composed of ossanoctae, Beowolves have very few internal organs. They possess a primitive digestive tract that allows them to swallow and partially digest organic matter. Beowolves are estimated to possess a stomach capacity of up to 14 liters. Most of their internal composition is tightly bundled muscles comprised of necrocarnis. Their fur is composed of keratate proteins. They do not possess a nervous, lymphatic, excretory, or circulatory system, or any other Grimm equivalent.

Further analysis of Beowolf digestive tracts show that they can regurgitate the contents of their stomachs.

Huntsman Engagement Doctrine: Beowolves are brutal close-quarters combatants. They have thickly muscled upper bodies, enormous arm spans, maws spilling with razor-sharp teeth, and can disembowel an adult human with ease. They can shred through Aura with a few claw slashes, but they have no ranged options and are lightly armored compared to other Grimm. The safest and cleanest way of dealing with a Beowolf is to dispatch them from afar using high-caliber Dust rounds or explosive ordinance.

If melee combat is the only option one has against a Beowolf, the best course of action is to sever its tail or the hind legs. This will cause the top-heavy Beowolf to lose its sense of balance and collapse, providing the perfect opportunity for its Telltale Heart to be punctured.

While they lack extensive armor plating, Beowolves are surprisingly robust - their thick fur and dense internal structure can reduce the damage received by Beowolves and hasten the time it takes for them to heal. Due to this, blunt weapons such as morning stars and warhammers tend to be less effective. Sharp, flat-edged blades are far more effective against Beowolves; longswords and axes are preferable due to their reach.

While a lone Beowolf can be slain rather easily by an experienced Huntsman, Beowolves are deceptively clever, are notorious pack hunters, and often seen prowling an area in groups of three or more. Unlike their more individualistic cousins, Beowolves are highly cooperative and are observed to employ group tactics more frequently than any other Grimm. They favour tactics such as encircling their prey from multiple directions, pouncing on them from an elevated position, and trying to overwhelm their enemies through sheer numbers.

As with most Grimm, the stench of dried blood or rotten meat can indicate the presence of a Beowolf.

Historical Addenda: Most people assume that Beowolves were named as such due to their lupine features, but the truth behind their appellation is far more complex. Beowolf is a modified form of Beowulfen, which in turn comes from Beowulf – an ancient, High Mythosprechen name which is no longer used.

In Modern Mythic, Beowulf literally translates to "bee-wolf", and metaphorically translates to "one who preys on bees,". It is used to describe bears, not wolves. This linguistic quirk has amused and irritated scholars in equal measure, but history aficionados will realize that this name is an homage to Bjorn "The Great Bear" Ironclaw, a legendary Atlesian warrior of House Nardyc during the final days of the Tempus Omnibellum.

While his existence has yet to be definitively proven, "The Saga of Bjorn the Defiant" has passed into legend, and is taught in Atlesian school curriculums to this very day. Ironclaw is remembered for killing hundreds of what were then known as "daemon-hounds" during the largest Grimm Incursion the Solitas Sector has ever witnessed, culminating with him slaying a "greater daemon-hound" at the cost of his own life. His (alleged) last words read as follows:

I spit my defiance in the children of the night. They can be felled and they can be beaten. Never forgive. Never forget.

As a symbolic gesture of resistance against the Grimm, Atlesian histographers began referring to daemon-hounds as Beowulfen. This sentiment was echoed by other histographs across Remnant, and after several centuries of linguistic drift "daemon-hounds" was eventually phased out of use.

Cultural Addenda: Beowolf heads, skin and bones are often repurposed into pelts, carpets, and wall mountings. In particular, Beowolf Pelts are used as status symbols by veteran Huntsman clans, especially in the Grand Confederation of Atlas and the Kingdom of Vale.

Pelts used to be more common during the Age of the Four Kingdoms where they represented one's valour and bravery; due to Grimm Incursion rates reaching record highs as of late, Beowolf pelts are reserved for ceremonial purposes nowadays. While there is no legislation against wearing Beowolf pelts in public, it is socially distasteful and considered a form of showboating.

Beowolves, alongside Ursae, Nevermore, and Griffons, appear more in the insignias and crests of noble houses compared to any other species of Grimm.

Due to their increased exposure in popular culture, Beowolves have become emblematic of the Creatures of Grimm as a whole. There are many artistic depictions of human-versus-Grimm combat – such as literature, filmography, and interactive media - that feature Huntsmen and Huntresses slaughtering Beowolves en masse. This has led to some people (mostly civilians, but these also include overconfident Huntsmen) dismissing Beowolves as ineffective "low tier" mooks.

This line of thinking is not only incredibly disrespectful to those who have lost loved ones to Beowolf attacks, but it is also wholly untrue. Beowolves are tireless, relentless savages that maul anything and anyone in their path and devour what remains. Mistaking their simplicity for vulnerability has resulted in the death of numerous individuals.

Addendum GB-001-1: Intensive analysis of necrocarnis samples has revealed the existence of a 'hyper-adaptive gene' embedded in a Beowolf's genetic makeup. The functionality of this gene is yet to be deciphered, as it does not abide by the same principles of polypeptide manufacture within human beings. The effects of this hyper-adaptive gene are expressed when a Beowolf is especially long-lived.

This gene is expressed by a newly-discovered gland embedded deep within a Beowolf's Telltale Heart, which is roughly the size and shape of a cherry tomato.

What is known is that this gene provides Beowolves with a heightened degree of genetic variance unseen in other Grimm types. Beowolves appear to adapt to extreme temperatures, mature faster, and become deferential to more physically imposing members of its species.

In especially rare cases, this can result in the proliferation of Beowolves with anomalous physical variations. These variations include, but are not limited to:

Alpha Beowolf [Devorator lycantrophos majoris]: A variation of Beowolf that is physically larger, stronger, and more aggressive than baseline Beowolves. Their increased bulk allows them to smash through buildings and throw automobiles with ease. While they are much harder to eliminate, their aggression often leads them to be easily baited into traps, and render them unwilling to cooperate with other Beowolves. When they fail to eliminate their target, Alpha Beowolves can become so enraged that their internal systems break down due to extreme stress. Officially recognized as its own subspecies. Classical Mythic Designation assigned. Bestiary Entry under construction.

Kerberos Beowolf [Devorator lycantrophos tricapitibus]: A variation of Beowolf that possesses three heads and tails. Besides a wider field of view and better sense of balance, they are no less intelligent or aggressive than the standard Beowolf. Classical Mythic Designation assigned, but the necessity of a separate Bestiary Entry remains up for debate.

Helfrost Beowolf [Devorator lycantrophos cryomortis]: A variation of Beowolf whose bodies are fused with large quantities of Ice Dust. Their claws, breath, and Ichor are capable of immobilizing their enemies, leaving them open to successive attacks. Helfrost Beowolves are easily identifiable due to the large, glowing Ice Dust crystals protruding from their bodies. This makes them highly detectable even in low-visibility areas. Killing a Helfrost Beowolf results in a cryogenic explosion that transforms its corpse and everything in the vicinity into ice. Because of this, the inner workings of Helfrost Beowolves are yet to be determined. Classical Mythic Designation assigned. Huntsman engagement doctrines are being determined.

Blackfire Beowolf [Devorator lycantrophos nocticendio]: A variation of Beowolf whose bodies are fused with large quantities of Fire Dust. Due to being bonded with a highly-reactive form of an already volatile material, they are exceptionally rare and extremely dangerous. Blackfire Beowolves are perpetually wreathed in noxious, dark flames that make it impossible for them to hide. They can start wildfires wherever they roam, and their smoldering claws can reduce human limbs to charred stumps. Moreover, Blackfire Beowolves have been witnessed hurling Grimm Bloodstones and splatter boiling Ichor at their enemies – making them the only Beowolf subspecies with a reliable option for ranged combat. Most of what we know about Blackfire Beowolves is theoretical since killing one causes an incendiary blast that atomizes everything in a 10-meter radius. Classical Mythic Designation assigned. Huntsman engagement doctrines are being determined.

Huli Jing / Kitsune / Gumiho [Devorator vulpesmortis orientales]: A variation of Beowolf that, while considerably smaller than standard Beowolves, possesses incredible speed, balance and agility. They are capable of imitating human vocalizations to lure in unsuspecting victims, as well as secreting a potent hallucinogenic compound from their fangs. Their most distinguishing features are their voluminous nine tails, which are as long as they are tall. They are endemic to the Realms of Vacuo and are officially recognized as their own subspecies. Classical Mythic Designation assigned. Bestiary Entry under construction.

Varg / Varghest [Lupusmortis internecivus raptus]: Unlike most Beowolves, Varghest are often mistaken for regular wolves, coyotes, or even domesticated dogs. This is due to their limited ability to shapeshift – by ingesting the DNA of a comparably-sized canid, a Varg can assume their appearance and physiology. This allows the Varg to interbreed with the species it has assimilated into, and result in the eventual spawning of massive packs of Varghest. Undisguised, Varghest resemble regular (though mangy and rather large) lupines with large, shaggy manes. They also possess the glowing red eyes and black fur shared by all Beowolves. Their most distinguishing feature is their mouths, which open up into five mandibles like the petals of a flower. A Varg's howl is a Type I auditory cognitohazard that helps sell the illusion that it is a regular canid.

The evolutionary purpose of the Varghest is unknown. We know next to nothing about their relation to Beowolves, their contributions to Grimm Incursions, or if their method of reproduction serves some other nefarious purpose. They are the main reason why stray dogs, especially pregnant ones, are terminated throughout Remnant. Public Service Announcements are used to warn the masses of their presence. Classical Mythic Designation assigned. Awaiting additional information before a Bestiary Entry can be created.

Not only is Dust a volatile superconductive propellant, it is also a carcinogen when exposed to living tissue for long periods. Despite the Grimm being composed of necrocarnis and ossanoctae, their bodies remain quasi-organic, and react negatively to the direct presence of dust. The existence of Helfrost and Blackfire Beowolves suggests the possibility that someone – or something – is experimenting on Beowolves in hopes of making them more dangerous. If this theory is proven correct, those who are responsible have committed treason of the highest order, and are an enemy of humanity forevermore.

Welcome back, [error/personnel/ident_tag_display/null]

Addendum GB-001-2: As of late, two potential Beowolf subspecies have appeared in Remnant. Both instances have been provided with temporary designations.

"Observer Beowolves": A variant of Beowolf that appears passive in the presence of humans, staring at them from a distance. It refuses to engage in combat and chooses to flee instead.

"Winged Shapeshifting Beowolf": Sighted by SDC Peacekeepers rampaging through a forested area 2 km southwest of an ordinance manufactorum that belongs to the Schnee Dust Company TM. It appeared to be surveying the Communal Barracks that the Faunus labourers slept in. The nearest Atlesian Spearpoint Mortar Battery was deactivated, but came back online 2 hours after the Grimm fled the vicinity. SDC Peacekeepers and Atlesian Military Personnel stationed near the area are currently on high alert. A Sojutsu-Pattern Hovership has been deployed to help secure the airspace around the manufactorum.

The growing number of Beowolf subspecies and rapid evolutionary adaptation adds credence to the theory that, during the creation of terrestrial Grimm, Beowolves are often used as a base template by [CLASSIFIED].
