As Alex and Steven stood there, trying to process the incredible transformation and the cryptic words of Dominique, they couldn't help but feel a mixture of awe, confusion, and concern. The revelation of her identity as The Moon Knight added a layer of complexity to an already perplexing situation.
Steven cautiously lowered the arcane shield, his gaze fixed on Dominique's unconscious form. "I have no idea what just happened, but it seems like she's no longer under The Way's control."
Alex knelt beside Dominique, checking her pulse and breathing. She seemed stable, albeit unconscious. "We need to get her somewhere safe and then we can figure out what's going on."
Steven nodded in agreement. "Agreed. Let's get her to a room, and then we can try to get some answers."
Together, they carefully lifted Dominique and carried her to a nearby room where she could rest. As they laid her down in a bed in one of the spare rooms, Alex couldn't help but wonder about The Moon Knight. A name shrouded in mystery and power, had just emerged from the ashes of Moonchild.
With Dominique now in a safe place, Alex turned to Steven. "She doesn' like she's going to be waking up anytime soon."
"No I suppose not, wrestling her mind away from The Way must have taken a whole lot out of her." Steven rubbed stroked his beard, "I never would have suspected Moonchild to be The Moon Knight."
"Yeah I know, that's surprising, to say the least." Alex shook their head, "We need to find out more about The Moon Knight and what her connection is to The Way. Then we really need to figure out our next steps in dealing with The Children of the Cosmos."
Steven nodded, "From what I can remember from a tome I read a while back, The Moon Knight was a servant of an ancient moon god, whose name has long since been forgotten. They would act as the executor of their will, doing the Moon God's bidding."
"So that begs the question, how the hell did The Way get their hands on her?" Alex pondered as they both left Dominique to rest.
"I'm fairly certain our friend in there can fill us in, once she recovers," Steven sighed, and then turned to Alex. "Speaking of recovery, how are you feeling?"
"I am actually feeling like I am almost back to fighting condition!" Alex flexed and stretched, "Yeah, I'm all better now!"
"That's good to hear," Steven smiled. "From the looks of it you needed a couple of days to relax and recover."
"Yeah it's been too long since I have had a substantial break." Alex grinned as he rubbed the back of his head, "I wish my place had this time distortion like your Mysterium!"
Steven chuckled.
With Dominique resting and their immediate concerns addressed, Steven and Alex sat down in the main drawing room to discuss their next steps.
Steven leaned back in a chair, deep in thought. "So, we know that Dominique is The Moon Knight, or at least was at some point. It's still unclear how she got involved with The Way and what her connection is to the Children of the Cosmos."
Alex nodded in agreement. "Exactly. And we also need to figure out what The Way's endgame is. They're clearly up to something big, and it's not just about controlling people's minds."
"Agreed," Steven said. "I think it's time we pool our resources and try to gather more information. The Mysterium has extensive archives on mystical and supernatural phenomena. I'll do some research there and see if I can dig up anything on The Moon Knight and the ancient moon god she served."
Alex nodded, feeling a sense of relief at having access to the Mysterium's resources. "That sounds like a good plan. While you're doing that, I'll head back to talk with my father. With how long he's been around he might have heard whispers about The Moon Knight, and I'll see if he's heard anything about The Children of the Cosmos."
Steven smiled. "Excellent, and let's not forget about our friend Dominique. Once she wakes up, we'll need to have a serious conversation with her. She might hold the key to unraveling this mystery."
Alex got up and Steven followed suit, "Nothing's going to stop us, Steven, absolutely nothing!"
The door to the Mystic Mysterium opened and closed, Alex and Steven looked towards the front hallway and saw Gwenella Silver walk in. "Steven, are you here? I need your help at Delacroix Hall, we need help…" Gwen came to a stop when she saw Alex and Steven standing. "Oh hey! You two…"
Gwen couldn't even finish her sentence as she appeared to be frozen in time. Alex was concerned, they looked over at Steven who had his hand up with his magic at work, "Steven!"
He turned to Alex, "I'm sorry but I had to do that to protect your identity!"
Alex smirked, "Thank you Steven, but there's no need! Gwen already knows that I'm the Ghost Spider."
"Oh, oh dear, Gwen's gonna be pissed that I did this again."
"Again?" Alex chuckled.
"Yeah," Steven slowly lowered his hand, releasing Gwenella from the temporal freeze.
Steven got behind Alex as Gwen blinked in surprise and then sighed in annoyance. "Really Steven?! Again?"
Steven sheepishly scratched his head. "Sorry, Gwen. Old habits die hard, you know? I didn't know you knew Alex was the Ghost Spider."
Gwenella shook her head, a wry smile on her face. "Well, at least you're consistent with your overprotective tendencies."
Alex chuckled, breaking the tension. "It's good to see you, Gwen. What brings you here?"
"Well before I was so rudely interrupted, I was coming to fetch Steven to help out at Delacroix Hall for his dad's fundraiser," Gwen explained, much to Steven's chagrin.
"Oh crap, was that today?!" Steven panicked, realizing he had completely forgotten about the fundraiser. "I'm sorry, Gwen. With everything that's been going on, it completely slipped my mind."
"That's alright Steven, what's been going on?"
Steven quickly filled her in on the recent events, including Dominique's revelation as The Moon Knight, and their need to gather more information about The Way and the Children of the Cosmos.
Gwenella listened intently, "That's a lot to take in. Well, count me in. I'll help you guys with your research after the fundraiser, and maybe we can figure out what's going on here."
Alex smiled appreciatively. "Thanks, Gwen."
Gwenella nodded. "Alright, let's get to it, but first… Steven, promise me you won't freeze me in time again unless it's a life-or-death situation."
Steven chuckled. "I promise, Gwen, no more time-freezing unless absolutely necessary."
Gwen turned to Alex, "You'll be my plus one again Alex. I'll need you running interference from any suitors my father may send my way."
Alex hesitated, "What about The Way and the Children of the Cosmos? I don't think I could really enjoy myself knowing that they're still out there."
Steven dissuaded their fears and concerns, "I don't think they are going to spring into action immediately. So I think we should enjoy tonight for what it is. One last respite before the storm."
Alex nodded slightly in agreement, "What about Dominique?"
"I'll keep her bound here within the Mysterium in case she wakes up, and I'll leave a note."
Alex put their hands on their hips, "You'll leave a note?"
"Yeah," Steven said, "It'll be a good one."
Alex snorted, knowing that they'd need some more encouragement, Gwenella smirked, "I'll take you to the boutiques in Goldenroad, I'll get you that black number you had your eye on the last time we were there!"
Alex widened their eye, "Well I suppose one night mingling with high society wouldn't be that bad!"
Steven grinned, "There we go. Alright, let me wrap up here, and then we will be on our way."
As the three of them prepared to attend the fundraiser at Delacroix Hall, there was a sense of tension in the air, but also a shared determination to make the most of this brief respite.
The fundraiser at Delacroix Hall was a lavish affair, with opulent decorations, elegantly dressed guests, and a grand ballroom filled with laughter and the clinking of glasses. Alex, dressed in the stunning black dress that Gwenella had insisted on, navigated the social maze with grace, using their quick wit and charm to deflect any unwanted attention.
Gwenella, resplendent in her own exquisite silver dress, introduced Alex as her friend and plus one to the guests, effectively deterring any potential suitors her father might have in mind. Alex for their part, was equally charming and engaging, effortlessly mingling with the attendees and making connections that might prove useful in their quest for information.
Alex was concerned about the feedback coming from the attendees and the ghosts that followed the attendees. However, Steven managed to charm a pair of earplugs so that way Alex would only be able to hear the living for the evening,
As the night wore on, Alex and Gwenella found themselves in a quieter corner of the ballroom, away from the prying eyes and chatter of the crowd. They sipped champagne and exchanged stories, finding comfort in each other's company amidst the chaos of their lives.
"I have to admit," Alex said, "This isn't as bad as I thought it would be, and this dress is amazing."
Gwenella grinned. "I knew you'd look stunning in it. Besides, it's important to have a little fun and relaxation now and then, even in your line of work."
Alex raised their glass in agreement. "To brief respites and glamorous gowns."
"To that," Gwenella toasted, clinking her glass with Alex's.
Alex looked around, "What is this fundraiser for?"
"Councilman Richard Strange is raising money for a volunteer-run food kitchen based in Eclipse," Gwenella explained. "I am part of Mr. Strange's little team, it's the reason why I am here instead of staying back home," She sipped on her champagne again.
"That's wonderful to hear," Alex smiled. "And that's Steven's father?"
Gwen nodded, "That's right."
"That's a noble cause," Alex remarked. "It's good to see people using their influence for something meaningful. I'm sure Steven is proud of his father's work."
Gwenella nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. Steven's dad has always been dedicated to making the city a better place. He's a good man." She remembered something, "Just be sure to never discuss a man named Adam Watcher around him though. They both have a mutual dislike of each other and Councilman Strange can't stand him."
"Noted," Alex said, before sipping their champagne again. Alcohol never really affected them ever since getting their powers, but they made it a habit to drink responsibly.
Just as they were discussing the fundraiser's purpose, a familiar voice approached them. "Ah, Gwenella, there you are! I've been looking all over for you."
They turned to see Councilman Richard Strange, a distinguished-looking man in his fifties, approaching with a warm smile. He wore a well-tailored suit and exuded an air of authority.
"Councilman," Gwenella greeted him with a smile, "This is my friend Alex. Alex, this is Councilman Richard Strange."
Alex extended a hand, shaking the councilman's with a friendly demeanor. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Councilman Strange. I've heard a lot about your work and the cause you're supporting tonight."
Councilman Strange's eyes twinkled with appreciation. "Likewise, Alex. I've heard quite a bit about you as well, from my son, Steven!"
"Ah, Steven mentioned me, did he? I hope he only had good things to say." Alex returned the smile, feeling a sense of camaraderie with the councilman. "He has spoken highly of you, Councilman Strange. It's clear he's proud of the work you do for the city."
Councilman Strange nodded, his expression turning slightly more serious. "I appreciate your kind words, Alex. It's crucial that we all do our part to make Eclipse, and New Oros, a better place. Our city faces its fair share of challenges."
Gwenella interjected, "And that's precisely why we're here tonight, supporting the food kitchen. It's a small step, but it can make a big difference."
Councilman Strange's eyes gleamed with gratitude as he glanced at his assistant. "I'm proud of the young people in this city, like Gwenella, who are dedicated to creating positive change. It gives me hope for the future." He looked around, scanning the crowd. "Have you seen my wife around? I hope she isn't badgering the kitchen staff again. She can never just turn off for the night."
"I believe she was talking to some other people over by the refreshment table." Gwen mentioned, "Shall I try to find her?"
"Oh no, I'll find her, you sit and relax!" Councilman Strange smiled, before heading off again.
As Councilman Strange walked away in search of his wife, Alex and Gwenella continued to enjoy their conversation. The atmosphere of the fundraiser had become more relaxed, and the music and laughter filled the air.
Gwenella leaned in closer to Alex, lowering her voice. "I'm glad you're here, Alex. It's nice to have a friend by my side tonight. These events can be a bit overwhelming at times."
Alex smiled warmly at her. "I'm happy to be here, Gwen, and I'm grateful for your friendship. It's not every day that someone like me gets to attend a high-society event."
Gwenella chuckled. "Well, you fit right in. Just remember, you're my plus one"
"I've already warded off a few unwanted advances on your behalf." Alex raised their eyebrow playfully.
"I didn't even notice. You're like a protective guardian angel in a black dress." Gwenella's laughter was melodic, and it seemed to draw the attention of a few other guests nearby. She glanced at them and then back at Alex. "I guess that's my cue to keep mingling. But seriously, enjoy the evening.
Alex and Gwenella continued to enjoy their evening at the fundraiser. The atmosphere was lively, and the guests seemed genuinely enthusiastic about supporting the food kitchen. It was a welcome break from the constant tension and danger they had been facing in their battle against The Way and the Children of the Cosmos.
Gwenella excused herself briefly to use the restroom, leaving Alex alone for a moment. As they stood there, observing the crowd, a familiar face caught their eye.
Adam Watcher, the enigmatic figure they had encountered on rare occasions was also in attendance. He was dressed impeccably in a sharp suit, and his sunglasses seemed to scan the room with a calculating gaze. His presence sent a shiver down Alex's spine, and they couldn't help but wonder what his motives were for being at the fundraiser.
Alex decided to approach him cautiously. They weaved through the crowd, making their way closer to Adam Watcher. As they got nearer, they noticed that he seemed to be engaged in a conversation with another guest, a well-dressed man with a serious demeanor.
Just as Alex was about to reach them, Councilman Strange returned, accompanied by his wife. Steven was by his side, and they both looked pleased with their conversation.
Councilman Strange noticed Alex's approach and introduced them to his wife. "Alex, this is my wife, Aida. Aida my dear, this is Alex, Steven's friend."
Aida Strange smiled warmly and extended her hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Alex. I hope you're enjoying the evening."
Alex shook her hand with a friendly smile. "I am, Mrs. Strange. It's a wonderful event, and the cause is truly commendable."
Aida's eyes twinkled with appreciation. "Thank you, dear. We're passionate about making a difference in our community."
As they engaged in polite conversation, Alex couldn't help but glance back at Adam Watcher. He had finished his conversation with the other guest and was now observing the proceedings with a neutral expression.
Steven, who had just walked over had been listening to his parents' conversation, leaned closer to Alex and whispered, "Do you see him too?"
Alex nodded subtly. "Yeah, Adam Watcher. I wonder what he's up to."
Steven frowned slightly. "He's always been a mysterious figure, and not in a good way. Be careful, Alex. I don't trust him."
Just then, Councilman Strange excused himself and Aida to attend to some other guests, leaving Alex and Steven momentarily alone.
Gwenella returned from the bathroom and reunited with Alex and Steven, she turned to Alex. "If you're thinking of approaching him, just be cautious. We don't know his agenda, and he's known to be... unpredictable."
Alex nodded in agreement. "I won't do anything rash. But I can't shake the feeling that his presence here isn't a coincidence."
Gwenella squeezed Alex's arm reassuringly. "We'll keep an eye on him together. Let's enjoy the rest of the evening, and we can strategize later."
Later on in the night, Richard Strange had decided to get some refreshments as he was a bit famished after greeting all of his guests. He made his way to the table when he found himself toe to toe with Adam Watcher. Councilman Richard Strange found himself standing near him as they observed the guests at the fundraiser. Their interactions had always been marked by a subtle tension, and tonight was no different.
Councilman Strange acknowledged Adam Watcher with a polite nod. "Mr. Watcher, I didn't expect to see you here tonight."
Adam Watcher returned the nod with a faint smile. "Councilman Strange, a pleasure as always. I received an invitation, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to support such a worthy cause." A subtle hint of sarcasm littered his voice.
Richard Strange's smile was cordial, but there was an underlying wariness in his eyes. "I see. Well, we appreciate the support. This fundraiser means a lot to us."
Adam Watcher's gaze drifted toward the crowd before returning to the councilman. "I've heard about your efforts to improve the city, Councilman. It's commendable. But I must admit, I find it intriguing that someone with your influence and resources would be involved in such charitable work."
Richard Strange's expression remained polite, though he couldn't completely hide his suspicion. "Charity and community service have always been important to me, Mr. Watcher. It's our duty to give back."
Adam Watcher's tone remained polite, but there was a subtle edge to his words. "Of course, duty. One can't help but wonder if there's more to your involvement than meets the eye."
Councilman Strange raised an eyebrow, his guard clearly up. "I assure you Mr. Watcher, my intentions are genuine. There's no hidden agenda here."
Adam Watcher tilted his head slightly, as if considering the councilman's words. "Very well, Councilman. I'll take your word for it. However, you must understand that in our line of work, we often encounter individuals with less-than-honorable intentions."
Richard Strange's jaw clenched momentarily before he replied evenly, "I'm aware of that, Mr. Watcher. Rest assured, my focus is on the betterment of this city."
Their conversation reached an impasse, both men maintaining a facade of civility while harboring their suspicions. It was clear that beneath the surface, there were deeper tensions and unspoken questions between them.
Adam's smile remained, but there was a hint of something calculating in his gaze. "Of course, of course, and speaking of contributions, I couldn't help but notice your son, Steven, is quite the dedicated young man! A doctor at such a young age, and an archeologist! I hear he's involved in some rather interesting endeavors."
Councilman Strange's expression tightened imperceptibly, though he kept his tone even. "Steven is a bright young man with a passion for community service. He's always looking for ways to make a positive impact."
Adam Watcher tilted his head slightly, his curiosity evident. "Yes, I've heard he's been associating with some rather... unique individuals. Like your assistant, the Sovereign's daughter, Gwenella Silver, for instance."
Richard Strange's jaw clenched briefly, but he maintained his composure. "Gwenella is a talented and independent young woman. She chooses her own path, but I wish her father would cut the girl some slack."
Adam Watcher continued to wear his enigmatic smile, his sunglasses concealing his eyes. "Indeed, it's admirable when young people forge their own destinies. I've always been fascinated by individuals who defy convention. You can say I have several eyes looking for such talent!"
The tension between them remained palpable, each man carefully measuring their words. Councilman Strange had no doubt that Adam Watcher was probing for information or perhaps testing his reactions. He decided to change the subject. "Mr. Watcher, I believe you mentioned that you received an invitation to this event. Have you had a chance to speak with any of the other guests?"
Adam Watcher's smile widened slightly, and he glanced around the room. "Oh, I've had a few interesting conversations, as one does at these gatherings. However, I'm particularly curious about your son, Councilman. It seems he's connected to a rather eclectic group of individuals. Doctors, archaeologists, and even some distasteful individuals?"
Councilman Strange's eyes flickered with surprise, and he couldn't help but glance briefly in the direction of his son, Steven. "My son has always been driven by his interests and passions. He's made friends with people who share his enthusiasm for knowledge and discovery."
Adam Watcher's tone remained polite, but there was an undercurrent of intrigue. "It's a fascinating group indeed, Councilman. I wonder what they're all so dedicated to uncovering."
Before Councilman Strange could respond, Aida, his wife, joined them with a warm smile. "Richard, darling, I was wondering where you'd disappeared to. Mr. Watcher, it's a pleasure to see you again." That was a bald faced lie, she hated Adam Watcher as much as her husband did.
Adam Watcher inclined his head respectfully. "Mrs. Strange, the pleasure is mine. I was just having a delightful conversation with your husband about the intriguing individuals your son associates with."
Aida chuckled softly. "Ah, yes, our Steven always has had an adventurous spirit. Richard, dear, there are other guests waiting to speak with you. Shall we continue mingling?"
Councilman Strange nodded, though his gaze lingered on Adam Watcher for a moment longer. "Of course, Aida. Mr. Watcher, enjoy the rest of the evening."
Adam Watcher's smile remained enigmatic as he bid them farewell. "Thank you, Councilman. And please convey my regards to young Steven."
As Councilman Strange and his wife moved away, Adam Watcher watched them for a moment before turning his attention back to the crowd. It was clear that he had a keen interest in the activities and associations of Steven and his friends, and his presence at the fundraiser was anything but coincidental.
Meanwhile, across the ballroom, Alex and Gwenella had been observing the exchange between Councilman Strange and Adam Watcher with growing unease. It was clear that Adam Watcher was trying to glean information about Steven and their group.
Gwenella leaned in closer to Alex, her voice low. "Did you see that? Adam Watcher is definitely up to something."
Alex nodded, their eyes still on Adam Watcher. "Agreed. We need to keep a close eye on him and find out what he's after."
Just then, Steven returned to their side, his expression serious. "Did you see who my dad was talking to?"
Gwenella and Alex exchanged a glance before nodding. "We saw," Gwenella replied. "It looked like Adam Watcher was probing for information about us."
Steven's jaw tightened with concern. "This isn't good. We need to be cautious and find out what he's up to."
Alex added, "We should also keep an eye on the other guests. Who knows what connections or information he's trying to gather."
