It was later in the afternoon, William had just arrived home with a smile on his face, and with 50 dollars in his pocket.
"Julia, I'm home"
"We're in here, William"
He turns the corner and sees Susannah on her rocking horse, and Julia holding her, as she approaches Julia, and gives her a big kiss.
"William what was that for?" She asked as he gave Susannah a kiss on the cheek
"Remember, when I told you how the inspector made a bet, and lost money?"
"Because he betted on Baccarat, right?"
"Yes, well Eddie Crawford was there for the race and asked us if we wanted to make a bet"
She got up and crossed her arms, "William Murdoch, how much money do you lose?"
He placed his hand into his coat pocket and pulled out an envelope, and handed it to her, "what's this?"
"Money…I won, Julia"
She looked up at him, "you what?"
"I placed a bet on a horse and won 50 dollars."
"William" she said happily as she gave him a hug and kiss, "but how?"
"I did the semantics of which horse, was most unlikely to win with the least bets. The inspector lost another 20"
Julia let out a laugh, "Margaret won't like that. So, what are you going to do with the money? Buy a new camera or gadget?"
"Well, I thought of that, but after this case, I got inspired and would use this money to buy something really special."
"Like…" Julia asked
William reached down and lifted Susannah and placed her into the pram, "get your hat, and handbag, Julia."
"William, what?"
"Trust me" he said as he placed a blanket around Susannah
It was few minutes later, as they arrived at the barn.
They let Susannah out of the pram, so she could see the horses better.
"William, what are we doing here?"
He smiled as he grabbed Susannah's hand, "come with daddy"
She grabs his hand as and they slowly walk, with Julia behind them, and pass by some horses. Susannah looks around in amazement, "horsey"
"Yes, sweetheart. Lots of horsey's" William said as he lifted her up. "But there's a particular horse…well more like pony, I want you to see." As they stop at a stall and see a half black and white pony.
"William, what is going on?" Julia asked as a man approached them
"Detective Murdoch?"
"Yes, Mr. Smith. Thanks for letting us come. This is my wife, Dr. Julia Ogden, and our daughter, Susannah"
"Doctor" Smith tips his hat
"Mr. Smith" Julia says
"So, you are interested in the pony?"
"What, William?" Julia said with a shocked voice
"Yes, I haven't told her the news, just yet. Could you just give us 5 minutes?"
"Of course, I will just go get a pail of water to refill her trough" Mr. Smith said as he left the barn
"William, again, what? A hor…pony?" He places Susannah on the ground as they went off to the side to talk
"Yes, I saw her a week ago, and thought she would be perfect for Susannah"
"But William, it's a lot of responsibility, and work. Also, when will we have the time for her?"
He grabbed her hand, "we'll figure it out."
"Alright, but I don't know how Susannah will feel about the pony?"
"Princess"
They turned and saw Susannah petting the pony, "did she just say princess?" Julia asked
"Yes, and look how she is with the pony. She loves her already" William said
"Princess" Susannah said again
"And has given her a name, already"
"Yes, Princess it is"
William lifts Susannah up again, as she keeps repeating Princess.
"Yes, Princess is yours, sweetheart" William said as Mr. Smith came back,
"so that's a yes on the pony?"
"Yes, and her name is Princess" William said
"Beautiful, sir. While you pay and sign the papers, does your little girl want to ride her?"
"Uhh" William said
"Yes, she would love to ride Princess" Julia said
It was 20 minutes later, as William walked out of the building and saw Susannah riding Princess, as a jockey controlled the reins.
"Julia"
"She loves her present, William."
"I knew she would. I know we discussed a dog, but maybe when she's older. At least this way, Princess will be taken care of, and we can come see her as much as we want"
"That sounds perfect, William." As she smiles and grabs his hand, "look at her William, so happy."
"Just a little girl and her horse, having fun" he said with a smile
