FFor whatever reason, Tori decided to throw a massive party in her house the minute her parents went out of town for the weekend. Honestly, Jade didn't understand why she was doing it because she didn't seem to be enjoying anything about it, especially hiding the details from her parents - one of whom was a cop. She was the definition of anxiety and had been exuding stress all week long.
She didn't want to go. There were going to be way too many people there that she didn't like. And after what happened at the last house party she went to, she wasn't keen on having her second public mental breakdown.
But she'd shown up because, despite all the reasons not to go, Tori had actually been a very good friend to her lately. And she knew she would never forgive her if she bailed.
That didn't mean she was enjoying it though.
Tori's party was an explosion of pop and glitter and dancing. All the wannabe pop singers from their school were there, trying to outshine each other. It was exhausting and loud and not Jade's scene. She sat on the couch, nursing the whiskey Andre had shoved into her hands before he abandoned her to sing another duet with Tori.
"Having that much fun?" Beck came up beside her and leaned against the couch.
"I want to gouge my eardrums out with a spoon," she told him, keeping her expression blank.
Beck smirked and their eyes met. They held each other's gaze for just a moment too long and for a second she swore she felt the electricity again. She looked away, focusing again on the makeshift stage which Tori had assembled in her living room.
"My turn!" Trina appeared, wearing a bright pink sequin number and snatching the microphone away from one of the other girls. Another cheesy pop song began blasting through the speakers even louder than the last.
"Please, someone shoot me," Jade downed the last of Andre's whiskey and put the glass down on the coffee table.
"Come on. No one will notice if we disappear for a bit," Beck gestured towards the back door.
Something in the back of her mind told her not to follow him. A little voice of reason told her this was a bad idea. But she ignored it.
"Alright fine. But I'm only coming because I will pass away if I have to listen to Trina screeching any longer."
They snuck out of the house and walked all the way down to the far end of the backyard. They sat down on the wall - keeping a couple of feet distance between them. He pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket pocket and a lighter. He slid one out of the packet and lit it, taking a quick drag before offering it to her.
She'd never been much of a smoker and they had probably had at least twenty arguments that had started by her trying to convince him to quit. But tonight, it all felt insignificant. She took the cigarette from him and inhaled deeply before passing it back to him.
"Tori would have an aneurism if she knew you had these in her house," she pointed out to him.
He shrugged and inhaled the cigarette again. There was silence between them but it wasn't awkward. Beck was one of the few people she knew who seemed to understand that you don't need to fill every single silence with meaningless words.
And she didn't know what to call this situation but she couldn't help but feel comfortable in his company.
"You know, Andre is worried about you," she told him, once he'd finished the cigarette.
"Andre is dramatic," he replied dismissively.
Jade shrugged. He wasn't wrong.
"Are you happy?" She asked after a while. The question had been lingering in her mind the whole time they'd been sitting here.
"Yeah," he replied candidly. "Are you?"
"Yeah," she sighed. It wasn't the truth but what was she supposed to say?
She looked up at him and there it was again - sparks - except this time - it was undeniable. They held each other's gaze for an even longer time. Too long for it to be anything other than desire.
Their lips met in a kiss. One of those all-consuming, deep longing, intense kisses that only happens when two people are really, desperately attracted to each other.
His hands were on her waist within seconds and hers in his hair as they deepened the kiss. He groaned and she felt his knee between her thighs as he pushed against her, his fingertips lingering on her hips.
"Wait, what are you doing?" She mumbled.
"Uh, kissing you.." He replied, breathlessly.
"Why?" She interrogated him.
"Because you're fucking sexy," he pressed several kisses down her neck until he found her pulse point. His hot breath on her skin sent shivers down her spine. He still knew all her weak points.
"Don't do this to me," Jade pleaded with him. He kissed her mouth again, harder this time and it was like a switch flipped in her brain and all the pain of the last few months came flooding back. She pushed him away forcefully.
"Beck, no! I'm not your next fucking girl of the week!" She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
"I thought that was obvious!" he looked back at her bewildered. "Jade, I love you."
"Oh no," her eyes flashed red. "You do not get to love-bomb me right now. We broke up. You don't get to have sex with me! Not now and not ever again!"
"Jade-," he sighed, leaning his head back.
"You're an asshole and a whore, Beck! I can't believe how many people you have slept with in the last six months. For fuck sake, if you wanted to hurt me you could have just taken a knife and stabbed me with it!"
"What?! You were the one who gave me an ultimatum!" He yelled back at her.
"And you were the one who decided to torture me with disloyalty. You're vindictive and cruel and a sleaze and I hate you!" The anger erupted out of her before she had a chance to filter any of her harsh words.
"You hate me?" He repeated, taken aback.
"Yeah, I do," she folded her arms and glared at him. "Because you broke my fucking heart."
He looked at her, deeply sad, and for a moment she actually felt guilty. She knew coming out here with him was a mistake. He stood up, brushed himself off, and walked away.
