Chris hears the helicopter overhead and knows her team is close as a result. During a short break in the hail of bullets she even manages to hear her teammates in her ear. She allows herself a small, relieved smile and dares to poke her head out of her hiding spot behind the wooden planks of the shot-up bar.
She checks her magazine. Down to the last few bullets, but it shouldn't be long now anyway.
Just as she puts the clip back in the bullets start flying again.
20 David has touched down and Street spots the two SUVs at one side of the structure. The echo of flying bullets makes it hard to pinpoint where exactly the shots are originating from, but the team immediately takes up a defensive posture. Street tries to decide where to run first when Hondo's voice comes through his earpiece a second after he hears the voice directly.
"Chris, where are you?"
There is a deafening silence over the coms but suddenly they hear a weak and out of breath "Saloon". Street wants to run over immediately but Tan puts a hand on his shoulder. Forcing him to wait and listen.
"Street, Tan two side. Luca with me, we go in the front. Chris take cover. Everyone, watch your crossfire,"
Street is tense and his knuckles probably are white again, but he can't care anymore. He only has one single thought: Getting Chris out of there. With a double tap Tan signals, he is ready and Street runs as fast as he possibly can to get into position.
He looks inside and can see two men perched behind a toppled over desk aiming for the bar. A very shot up bar. He shares a glance with Tan and radios in "in position." After a beat Hondo tells them to go but at the same time the two men open fire again.
Street doesn't really think much and just bursts through the window with Tan hot on his heels "LAPD, on the ground" rings in his ears right after the sound of gun fire. He glances to Tan who keeps his rifle trained on the two men who slowly get down on the ground. Street slings his rifle onto his back and flies around the shot-up bar tabletop.
His eyes fall onto a slumped over figure he instantly recognizes as Chris. "Chris?" he asks softly at first but when she doesn't react Street's voice raises in volume and fear. "Chris? Can you hear me?"
His hands land on her shoulders and trail up to her neck to check for a pulse. He cradles her onto his lap while he checks her and when he pulls up his hand to trigger his walkie his fingers are stained in blood.
"We need a medic," he just shouts. "Chris got hit,"
His demand gets echoed in his ear and when his eyes trail up he can see Luca stand there. His friend carefully takes Chris from him and carries her out. Jim continues to sit there in that shot up saloon and his eyes are trained on the blood stain on the wood. Chris's blood.
He gets pulled out of his stupor by Tan. "Street? Come on we gotta go,"
Jim is almost in a trance until he can see the medics working on Chris outside and he throws every caution to the wind. Again.
He doesn't really care what anyone thinks about him right now, he just needs to be with her. Make sure Chris is okay.
They all congregate at Chris' side and Tan puts a hand on his shoulder. Probably to try and keep him in check but that's almost impossible the second the heart monitor starts going off like crazy.
"What's going on? Do something!" leaves Street's mouth before anyone else can even think a word.
"We have to go. Now!" the paramedic states and starts lifting the board into the helo.
Luca helps and Tan has to forcefully restrain Street. "Calm down. We'll go after them the second we can," but Jim doesn't want to wait. He unclips his weapons, presses them into Tan's hands and walks to Hondo. "I am going with her. She shouldn't be alone," it's not even stated as a question and Jim later realizes he was really disrespectful, but he couldn't leave any room for discussion.
Hondo simply nods his head but narrows his eyes anyway.
During the flight Chris's heart threatens to give out multiple times and the paramedics shock her back into rhythm narrowly. After they have arrived at the hospital Chris is immediately being taken into surgery, leaving Street to sit alone in an empty waiting room.
Alone with his thoughts and fears.
He'd meant it when he told Tan before he couldn't lose her. Not now. Not ever. And especially not like this.
Street sat there feeling helpless thinking about everything he still wanted to tell her, to show her. And every time there are footsteps outside his face shoots up. Just like right now when the door reveals his team. The look on their collective faces tells him they see probably right through him.
Not even Luca's bear hug can make anything better right now.
"Have they told you anything?" he asks weakly and looks pleadingly to Hondo.
"No, but Hicks is out there asking questions. He also called in her uncle," Hondo replies formal and then softens his eyes. "How are you Street? You do know you did nothing wrong?"
Street can't get his mouth to work because behind Hondo the door opens again, and Hicks and a doctor enter.
"How is she?" Street rushes out and pulls himself together as best as he can. The commander's face is grim, but he stays silent.
"We lost her," the doctor starts, and Jim feels his knees buckle under him. If it weren't for Luca, he probably would be lying on the floor. "Twice but we got the bullets out and could repair every knick and rupture. Ms. Alonso's injuries were severe, and we will keep her in the ICU under sedation for a few days."
After that he turns to Hicks. "Send her family to my office when they arrive so we can arrange the approved visitor list."
