{Party Chat}

AN: I'm going to be switching how I do party chat a bit so that it's just replacing the quotation marks.

12

Neo and I had decided to stick with Aurelia and Yahto for the rest of the initiation. As we all made our way north towards the abandoned temple, we encountered several small groups of grimm, which we took out easily. Catching our breath in another clearing after encountering a particularly large group of Beowolves, a large shadow passes over our heads, accompanied by the faintest strains of two girls arguing. Looking up at the shadow, I see a large Nevermore with what appears to be two girls clinging to its feathers.

"That's Ruby, isn't it?" I say with a sigh, seeing her signature red cloak fluttering with the wind. "How did she even end up on a Nevermore to begin with?"

"How should I know?" Neo signs with a shrug. "It's Ruby; we can kind of count on her doing something outlandish like this, can't we?"

"Yep," I reply, before beginning to grumble. "And I think that's Whitey next to her. There goes my plan to make sure she fails the initiation."

Neo swats me on the back of my head before gesturing us all forward.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," I respond to her silent admonition before calling out to the other two. "We better hurry up. It can't be much further to the temple."

"Sure," Aurelia called back, Yahto nodding back from next to her.

I was about to start running after the Nevermore with my sister dangling from its back when I heard glass shattering and felt a weight on my back as Neo teleported onto me once more.

{Guessing you want a ride,} I sent over the chat to my new passenger, chuckling slightly at my best friend's antics.

{Just go already, C,} Neo messaged back, once again gesturing forward with her umbrella. {Mush! Giddy-up! Yah! I want to finish this thing and get back to civilization before it gets dark!}

"Okay, okay," I said with a slight laugh. "Let's get going then."

As we started to move, chasing after the Nevermore, we saw an Ursa ahead of us with a girl wearing a pink skirt and carrying a large hammer riding on its back. My brain almost stalled at this image, nearly missing the green-clad boy following her, carrying two pistols with blades coming down from the barrel.

"Please tell me I'm not the only one seeing this." I called out to my companions, still running in the direction of the temple.

"If by this you mean a hammer-wielding girl riding an Ursa while being chased by a boy wearing a green Tai-Chi shirt," Aurelia replied in a deadpan tone. "Than I have no idea what you're talking about."

"A simple yes would have sufficed," I grumbled indignantly in reply to the girl's sarcasm.

Ahead of us, I saw the Ursa that was being used as a steed finally collapse under the hammer-wielding girl's attacks as she and the boy broke through the tree line. Finally reaching the clearing the two had entered, we exited the forest and saw the temple just as my older sister's hair ignited and her eyes flashed red.

"I can't take it anymore!" She cried out in near-visible frustration. "Can everyone just chill out for two seconds before crazy happens again?!"

"One one thousand, two one thousand," I called out snarkily in response in order to announce my presence. "Wonder what'll happen next? Maybe money will start falling from the sky."

Yang glanced over at me, rolling her eyes as she did. "Well, I C you two ended up partners. Anything else Neow with you?"

Neo and I groaned internally at the terrible puns on our names, though she did finally hop off my back as she did. Ruby, on the other hand, wasn't paying attention. Instead, she had her head craned back, staring at something in the sky above us.

"Umm… Guys?" She said finally, pointing up into the sky.

A quick glance at what she was pointing at revealed the giant Nevermore we had seen earlier, with Whitey hanging onto one of it's talons, which was almost the same size as her.

I chortled internally at the sight taking place above us. Neo, sensing my amusement, sent a slightly disapproving look my way before rolling her eyes and turning back to the spectacle above us.

"How could you leave me?!"Weiss cried down to us.

"I said 'jump'!" Ruby shouted back with a slightly exasperated tone.

"She's gonna fall." The black-haired girl who appeared to be Yang's partner said it unconcernedly.

"She'll be fine," Ruby replied nonchalantly.

"And who cares anyway?" I grumbled under my breath, receiving an elbow from Neo for my troubles.

"She's falling," The boy in green drawled as we all watched her slip off the Nevermore's talon and begin to freefall.

Suddenly, a fast-moving figure appeared in my vision as Jaune jumped out of a tree he had been in for some reason and caught the falling heiress. He then proceeded to give what might have been the corniest line in existence, just loud enough so my enhanced faunus hearing picked it up.

"Just… dropping in?" He asked to receive only a blank stare in reply.

He found out why that was when they both fell 15 or so feet to the ground. Jaune landed face first on the ground, and Weiss landed in a comfortable seated position on his back.

"My hero," She stated in a mocking tone, getting up and walking towards the rest of the group.

"My back," Jaune groaned in reply, clearly in pain.

Suddenly, a redheaded girl in Greek-style armor crashed into the ground in front of us. Having been seemingly chased by the large scorpion like Death Stalker all the way through the forest,

"Great! The gang's all here! Now we can die together!" Yang huffed, her voice thick with false enthusiasm.

"I think it's a little..." I start to say before being cut off by my younger sisters battle cry.

"Not if I can help it!" Ruby yells, charging at the Death Stalker, firing Crescent Rose as she goes.

"Soon to pronounce our deaths," I finish with a sigh trailing off as I watch her charge towards the giant skeletal scorpion.

"Ruby, wait!" Yang shouts after the charging reaper to no affect.

Ruby is swatted backwards by the Grimm's large pincers, startling me out of my annoyance at her careless charge. My annoyance quickly changes to worry as she is thrown back.

"D-Do-Don't worry! Totally fine!" She stammers back to us as she turns back toward the grimm and fires once more in its face before starting to run back towards us. She sheathes her scythe as the Death Stalker starts to go after her.

"Ruby!" Yang and I yell out at the same time in alarm, with Yang charging forward towards our younger sister.

As they both attempt to get to each other, the Nevermore caws and swoops down, firing a slew of sharp feathers that catch on Ruby's cape and block Yang's path. Ruby begin's tugging on her cloak futilely as the Death Stalker begins its approach, its stinger held high, ready to attack.

"Get out of there, Ruby!" I yell as I watch with the group by the temple. As I watch, I prepare to teleport at any time if it looks like she is going to be injured by the grimm. "This is why I advised against the cape," I muttered under my breath. (Insert "No Capes" meme here.)

"I'm trying!" Ruby cried, still tugging on her cloak.

"Ruby!" Yang called, reaching out in vain towards our younger sister.

And just as I was about to give up keeping my Shadow Walking as an ace in the hole, a white blur appeared in the corner of my eye, and raced past Yang to reach Ruby. A wall of ice catches the Death Stalkers golden stinger just as it is about to reach the crouched figure of Ruby, her arms positioned futilely above her head.

{Great,} I sent to Neo, grumbling as best I could over the party chat. {Now I have to thank Schnee for saving her.}

I received a swat and an eye roll in response from my mute companion. I nudged her back, smirking under my mask as I watched Weiss berate Ruby.

"You are so childish!" The white haired girl began

"Weiss…?" I could just barely make out what Ruby said upon hearing this from Weiss.

"And dim-witted and hyperactive, and don't even get me started on your fighting style," Weiss continued. "And I suppose I can be a bit... difficult... but if we're going to do this, we're going to have to do this together. So if you quit trying to show off, I'll be... nicer."

"I'm not trying to show off," Ruby objected meekly. "I want you to know I can do this."

"You're fine," Weiss drawled as she walked away.

I see Ruby clasp her hands and whisper something before standing up and exclaiming upon seeing the Death Stalker struggling to free its tail from the wall of ice. Yang reached Ruby, with me a few steps behind, and grabbed her up in a tight hug, squeezing tight enough to elicit a grunt from Ruby.

"So happy you're okay!" Yang exclaimed, and she and Ruby stared at each other for a moment.

"Maybe don't go charging off towards massive Grimm alone when you have plenty of backup." I scolded slightly as I reached my sisters, ruffling Ruby's hair none to gently as I said this.

"Guys?" Jaune called out from behind us. "That thing's circling back! What are we gonna do?"

"Look, there's nonsense dilly-dallying," Weiss reasoned. "Our objective is right in front of us."

"She's right. Our mission is to grab an artifact and make it back to the Cliffs." Ruby agreed, nodding to Weiss. "There's no point in fighting these things."

"Run and live - that's an idea I can get behind!" Jaune chimed in, sounding very much in favor of the idea.

"As much as I love a good Grimm slaughter, that sounds like the best plan for this situation," I acquiesced, understanding the other's reasoning.

Neo and Aurelia went into the temple and grabbed a pair of black pawn pieces before we all regrouped. The Death Stalker continued to struggle against its bonds, with the ice starting to crack at last.

"Time we left!" The boy dressed as a martial artist insisted.

"Right," Ruby agreed, waving to the rest of us to follow her. "Let's Go!"

{Where did the shy girl who could barely talk to people go?} I messaged Neo.

{Guess she found her element,} She messaged back with that impish grin I was still so fascinated by.

The group left the forest and entered another abandoned series of structures. We all ducked behind various covers and concealments as the Nevermore from before passed above us and perched on a high column, letting out a loud caw as it did.

"Well, that's great!" Yang groused at the sight of the giant Grimm.

'Observe' I thought out to the system.

Suddenly, Jaune called out to the rest of us as the Death Stalker burst out of the forest. "Ah, man, run!"

We all scattered from our hiding places, the Nevermore launching itself into the air as we did. 'Observe' I thought out once more to the system.

"Nora, distract it!" The martial artist calls out, and as the girl proceeds to launch a slew of rockets at the giant bird, I hear Yahto speak up from nearby.

"Does anyone else smell that?" He asks.

Taking off my mask, I sniff the air and catch the unmistakable smell of sulfur coming from below the bridge we're on.

"Yeah, I smell it," I respond. "I really hope it's not what I think it is."

Looking down below the bridge I see a large grimm crawling out of a tunnel and beginning to climb the bridge. It had bone plates striped down it's bach leading to a large tail. The plates on the tail had countless pits that spewed out a cloud of miasma. 'Observe'

"Great, a giant evil skunk," I huffed to the rest of the group around me which now consisted only of Yahto, Aurelia, and Neo. "This oughta be fun."

AN: Well this Chapter took forever to write. I had the worst case of writers block and at the same time Life started to get crazy for me . I'll try to get the next chapter out in the next couple of weeks and if I can manage that hopefully I can keep to a more regular update schedule. Thank you to everyone that still watched for updates on this. As always Reviews/Constructive criticism are always appreciated. See you soon-SE
