Summary: Cana has foreseen their future early on and now she watches how it comes true as Erza and Gray fall in love with each other.
When Cana first met Gray, he was in nothing but his shorts despite it being winter. That was strange in itself but Cana, being a member of Fairy Tail, wasn't bothered by it. All their members were weird in some way and if Gray had an unconscious stripping habit that was okay too. However despite his outwards cool and relaxed behavior Cana could feel an inner darkness in the young boy. She couldn't quite put her finger on what it was, but something seemed to bother Gray.
Even after half a year and become friends with Gray, he didn't share the story of his past with her. Trying to find out more about her new friend, Cana decided to tell Gray his fortune. It took a lot of convincing for him to agree, but so far Cana had told everyone their fortune, if they liked it or not. Apparently Gray's day had been bad so far, so when she told him that today would be his lucky day, he was more than angry. However Cana knew that her cards were never wrong. She had told a lot of people their fortune so far and she had always been right. In the end this time wasn't an exception, because it was the day Erza entered their guild.
Just like with Gray when he first joined the guild, Cana felt that Erza was haunted by something in her past and just like Gray she didn't talk about it. To tell the truth she didn't speak at all with any of them, which in return angered Gray so greatly that he challenged her to a fight.
To Cana's surprise the strange girl in armor beat Gray each time and she didn't even seem to use all her strength in the fights. Sure, Gray wasn't the strongest in their generation, but he was still an excellent ice magician and that Erza beat him so effortlessly was impressive. Considering Gray's competitive nature he challenged Erza almost every day, each time with the same result.
Cana could only watch them in amusement, knowing that these two would end up being best friends in no time. Maybe she was the only one who thought that, but her cards had told her even more on that fateful day and she trusted them completely. However even to her it was a surprise when suddenly Gray stopped challenging Erza out of nowhere. One moment he wanted to fight her and then the next day he sat with her in the corner where she normally sat alone.
Looking closer at the two, Cana saw a change in their behavior. Not only was Erza smiling the slightest bit at something that Gray had said, but the boy was also sitting very close to the girl who was always so withdrawn around others. Gray seemed different as well. Despite that he hadn't been dismissive to anyone he hadn't been really close with anyone either. Now that he was sitting with Erza, his demeanor had changed the slightest bit. When Erza gave him a smile, surely the first one she had given anyone in a long time, he returned it just as warmly and the darkness that still seemed to surround him from time to time vanished a little.
From this day on Erza's behavior changed even more. Before Erza had been so distant, but suddenly she started talking to a few others and Cana was sure that whatever had happened between Gray and her had changed Erza's attitude towards the guild.
A few weeks later Gray found a rival in Natsu and Erza had to break them up from fighting more often than not, but that Erza still called them her friends was what made Cana smile. It seemed that for the first time in a small eternity Erza was happy and so was Gray.
While they grew up, it got more and more obvious that Gray and Erza got closer. Sure, Erza still commanded him around like she did with everyone else, but he was the only one who could get her to give in when something was really important to him. Considering that, it was no surprise that they ended up in the same team for missions.
It didn't take long for Erza to make a name for herself. She became known as the great Titania and was finally allowed to take S-class missions. Erza didn't seem proud of herself, but Gray made up for that when she announced her promotion to the guild. In the guild hall he congratulate her just like everyone else did, but when they went outside after the small party, that Gray threw for Erza, Cana witnessed his real congratulation.
Never before had Erza let anyone close enough to her to touch her, but when Cana left the guild, she found Gray embracing Erza and the scarlet haired woman let him. Cana could only smile at them and hid behind a corner to not disturb their moment. By now it was obvious to her that Gray held more feeling for Erza than friendship. When they had been children he had often been teased about having a crush on Erza, but Cana could see that it was more than a crush by now.
Cana's assumption was proven right when Erza went on her first solo S-class mission and Gray was a nervous wreck the whole time. The normally cool ice magician was pacing around the guild when Erza didn't come back on time and Cana could clearly see the worry in his eyes. However the moment when the Titania stepped into the guild, a few little scratches on her face but otherwise fine, Gray congratulate her on her successful mission and acted as if he hadn't been worried sick for her safety. Cana could only shake her head at that, men and their stupid pride to always appear fearless.
Then Galuna Island happened and if it hadn't been for Lucy telling her everything that went on during this mission, Cana might have never known what had made Gray and Erza make the next step in their relationship. Apparently for the first time ever Erza had broken the rules so Gray could finish a mission that was related to his past. It was the best proof on how much the Titania cared for her best friend and how deep her feelings for him really ran. Until now Cana hadn't been sure if Erza felt more than friendship for Gray, but this mission proved it and what happened after that confirmed it for sure.
After the team was back from that mission and everything had calmed down Cana witnessed the moment between Gray and Erza that she had long foreseen since the moment Erza had entered the guild hall.
It was late at night and Cana was on her way back home from drinking to celebrate a successful mission, not that she needed a reason to drink. When she was about to cross the bridge on her way, she saw two people standing by the river. At first she didn't think much of it, until she saw that the guy was shirtless and the girl had long scarlet hair. This was a dead giveaway for two certain people who she knew quite well. Deciding to see what was going on, she hid under the bridge and watched what would happen. To Cana's surprise the Titania didn't wear any armor. Sadly Cana couldn't hear what they were talking about, but the way Gray stood so close to Erza, his chest touching her back and the way Erza didn't pull away when the ice magician encircled his arms around her said it all. Cana knew that she was invading on a rather private moment between her friends, but she couldn't look away from the scene in front of her.
Erza and Gray were powerful magicians, so seeing them this vulnerable was a rare sight. Gray might not be a S-class magician yet, but his ice magic was not only beautiful, as Erza often described it, but powerful as well. He prided himself with the magic that he had learned from Ur and treasured it. This attitude made him one of the best magicians. However no matter how great the ice he made was, Cana had always thought that the most powerful ice was the one around his heart. After he had come back from Galuna Island it seemed not as strong and the darkness around him wasn't there anymore, but the ice was never completely gone. Now however when he gently turned Erza around in his arms and leaned closer to her it melted completely.
Then there was Erza, who was not only a S-class magician, but was known for her strong and powerful armors. However Cana had seen from the beginning that her physical armor was nothing compared to the strong armor around her heart. Erza was protecting her heart with the strongest armor and so far no one had manged to break it. Now that she was in Gray's arms and closed her eyes when he leaned closer to her lips, the armor disappeared completely, giving the man in front of her permission to her unguarded heart.
Over the years Cana had seen the ice slowly melting and the armor becoming creaks. She had never doubted that these two were meant to be and it seemed that they finally realized it as well. When Erza and Gray's lips met in the most beautiful kiss Cana had ever seen, she turned away with a smile. Her cards had been right all along.
A/N: I wrote a few other stories about those two, so let me know if you would like to read them then I'll add more one-shots. Please review and tell me what you think :)
