Kyle Benard:
-A man in his 30's
-An employee of one of Gotham's narcotics firms
-Clean track record
-Divorced with two kids
-Single dad
Those were the attributes that many people knew Kyle by, unconsciously creating internal images of him as a hard-working father whose wife left him with two kids. They assume he didn't succumb to his misfortune and instead forced himself to step up in the working field, leading him to create a new version of stability for his children.
The issue was that most people weren't Damian Wayne, and they also didn't ever engage in half as much of a thorough deep dive into someone's life. His findings showcased the true meaning behind the phrase: "more than meets the eye."
Cindy, Kyle's wife, didn't just break off their 6-year marriage and dump the kids on him. Kyle grew bored of her. He was a calculative man, a quality he possessed before his marriage. Always ensuring he was in control at all times. Control was a personal obsession of his.
What she ate and wore, who she could communicate with, and when she could go out. All were just a handful of ways Kyle controlled her. To him, she was nothing more than a source of dopamine; her only purpose was to please himself.
Over the years, his desire for control kept growing, with his methods evolving, until control started getting more physical for him. Showering with visible dark marks, popping back dislocations, and suturing, the new norm in the cage that looked like a house from the outside. Cindy could only take so much before she called it quits.
Kyle, who had already started to feel her use die out, had only one condition. Make it a clean divorce and leave the children. Children, being a result of his strict demands of her. She knew she couldn't defy him and remain sane; she also knew they would only remind her of what he did.
Her "freedom" from him was over and done in less than a week: documentation of signed papers and retaining what little belongings she had. Come nightfall, she had left Gotham.
Leaving her children to fend against their father alone, while no one noticed from the outside looking in; no one, except Damian Wayne, Robin.
