Chapter 3: The Journey To The God's Forest
—OoOoO—
Right after the ship docked on the sky island, the entire crew of the Strawhat Pirates scattered onto a beach made entirely of clouds. In fact, Maki, Robin, and Zoro, who had finished their conversation, joined them. Almost all were joking and playing with that completely foreign beach ecosystem. However, some crews just relaxed while looking at the view peacefully.
Not just playing around. The Strawhat Pirates generally consisted of sociable people who quickly got along with anyone. Because of that nature, they had even gained local acquaintances, a father-daughter pair. These two people taught them many things, including the culture and technology used by Sky Island residents.
What attracted their attention the most was the waver, a vehicle that could transport a person across the clouds without sails or paddles. Maki also didn't fail to observe that technology. It looked like a motorboat in her eyes. However, she didn't see any machine moving it.
"Hey, is it okay to leave Nami alone to play with that thing?" Maki asked.
"Well, that's fine. Nami knows what she's doing," Luffy replied without worrying.
They were currently being guided to the house of a father and daughter they met on the beach called Angel Beach. Basically, Maki thought visiting the place of someone you had only known for a while wasn't a good thing to do. They could be planning something terrible. However, she did not think that these two people had evil intentions.
They now walked across the stairs made of clouds and stretched across. According to the old man named Pagaya, this place was called the white-white sea and was made of unique clouds composed of special particles from the blue ocean. While people on Sky Island call it pyroblon, it was more popularly called kairoseki for people in the blue sea. Because of those substances, the clouds had extraordinary density with a fairly light mass, so they could float on the clouds and even become a liveable zone.
"Well, welcome to my house," said the old man.
They all entered the house that stood above the clouds. The furniture inside was quite complete, like an average house. It was just that everything was made using clouds as the primary material.
"Maki! Maki! Look, the sofa is so soft!" Chopper said while pulling Maki's wrist.
The bespectacled girl followed the fawn and sat on a sofa made of clouds.
"Oh, it's softer than I imagined," Maki commented.
Unlike the others, Luffy and Ussop were busy playing with the dial. Meanwhile, Sanji immediately dashed towards the kitchen when they entered the house. As host, Conis carried out her duties to accompany her guests, especially Luffy and Ussop, who were having fun playing.
"It's called a tone dial," said Conis, "It can be used to record sound and play it back later. It's a special shell that can only be found in the white-white sea, or more precisely in its shallow shores."
"If it's a dial, I don't see how it can make the waver move," Robin said.
Hearing Robin's confusion, Conis walked towards the buffet and took another shell the size of the one Luffi held.
"The energy source to move the waver is this one. Although the one used should be bigger than this. We call this the Breath Dial," Conis explained.
The girl with wings on her back then turned to Luffy.
"You want to try it, Luffy-san?"
"Can I? Give it, give it to me!" replied Luffy excitedly.
Conis nodded in agreement. However, before she handed it over to Luffy, she first gave instructions on using the Breath Dial.
"If you leave it facing the wind for 30 minutes, it will release a wind impulse equal to that 30 minutes. To test it, you can turn the dial as fast as possible using your hand, Luffy-san."
The black-haired boy followed the instructions given. He turned his hand rapidly for a few seconds and brought the shell before his face. A strong gust of wind came from the shell's hole right after that.
"Oh, It's so cool!"
Meanwhile, Maki, who saw that scene, seemed to realise something.
"Rather than absorbing and releasing wind, isn't it more like storing kinetic energy and releasing it when needed?"
Conis tilted her head.
"Energy… what?"
"Kinetic energy. The energy produced when an object moves," replied Maki.
Conis didn't understand what Maki meant. Conversely, the girl from another world was quite surprised when that girl didn't know the term kinetic energy even though they could create a device similar to a motor boat and a tape recorder.
"No, it's nothing. Never mind," Maki corrected her words quickly.
'Basic things like gravity and the atmosphere seem similar to those on earth. But this world seems to have something different.'
The conversation then changed to another topic. Most of it was filled by Conis, who explained the various types of dials and how they were the basis of technology and supported the sky island civilisation.
Maki wasn't very interested in the conversation. She did hear several things, such as the culture on the island above the clouds. However, it only aimed to fill her head with information. She had no intention or desire to join in the conversation. If anything, Maki just leaned her head on the chair's soft back.
Moreover, when Sanji came from the kitchen with various dishes, Maki didn't hesitate to be one of the first to eat them.
However, her calm was disturbed when she heard a faint explosion sound, which even she doubted her hearing.
"Hey, didn't you hear something like an explosion? No, it was more like the sound of thunder.
Zoro was the first to react to Maki's words.
"Explosion? I didn't hear anything. How about you, Luffy?" Zoro said as he turned to his captain.
"Now, if you mention it, I also heard something. I thought it was the material sound of construction workers."
Zoro could no longer take it lightly after receiving the second testimony. However, he couldn't do anything because he didn't know whether what they heard was a threat. In fact, what made him worried right now was Nami's whereabouts, who was left alone in the sea of clouds.
"I don't think it came from the construction area," Maki said.
The girl stood up and walked towards the balcony.
"If I'm not mistaken, it came from the East," she added.
Hearing this statement, Conis and her father's faces immediately turned pale. Even a fool wouldn't miss the change that occurred in their expressions. Sanji, who felt uncomfortable, started to stand up and join Maki on the balcony.
"By the way, where's Nami-san? I'm worried because she's alone out there," said the blonde while observing the beach.
"She probably went on an adventure. Just let her. She'll be fine," replied Luffy casually.
However, the words of their captain didn't ease the bad feelings felt by almost everyone in the living room. Unable to suppress the feeling in her heart, Conis revealed something that should not be taboo for outsiders.
"In Skypea, there's a place where no one should ever enter. That place's located to the east and very close to this island. Moreover, it can be easily reached with a waver."
"A place that shouldn't be entered?" Robin asked.
Conis nodded and answered, "Yeah. It is the holy land, where God resides…, the Upper Yard."
—OoOoO—
After receiving a meal and hospitality from Conis and her father, the Strawhat Pirates members and Maki returned to the beach where their ship was anchored. There was no particular reason behind it. First, they must look for Nami because the girl had been gone too long. Second, Luffy insisted on exploring other places on Sky Island. Third, Robin secretly agreed to the proposal because she still felt strange about the relationship between Jaya Island and Skypea.
"Maki-chan…, are you sure there's nothing you want to bring?" Sanji asked excitedly.
Until now, Maki still felt uncomfortable with Sanji's monkey-like behaviour, like when they entered their mating period. However, according to Nami and Robin's confession, even though Sanji looked like a horny mammal, and in reality he was, he was a gentleman who could respect women's privacy. Because of that, Maki would try to tolerate his behaviour.
"Nothing. I didn't have anything to take with me in the first place. But well, I was looking to see if there were any weapons I could use," said Maki.
Hearing that answer, Sanji then turned to Zoro.
"Oi, Marimo! Did you hear what Maki-chan said? She needs a weapon! Don't be greedy, and give her one of your swords!"
"Huh? If she wants a weapon, that's her business. Why should I be the one to bother?" Zoro replied.
"What are you saying? You're only a third-rate swordsman. Your sword would be much happier if Maki-chan was wielding it rather than being held in your smelly hands!"
"If you want to give her a weapon so badly, why don't you just cut off your leg and let her use it?"
"What did you say, Marimo?"
"Are your ears deaf, curly eyebrows?"
Maki couldn't help but sigh at the ridiculous argument. She didn't care about the behaviour of those men. However, she heard Robin giggling.
"A pleasant sight, isn't it?"
"Well, sometimes watching idiots fight is fun," Maki replied sharply.
Their activities were diverted when they heard Ussop's chatter, who had been watching the surroundings while looking for Nami.
"Hey, a group of people is approaching Luffy, Conis, and her father at the beach."
They simultaneously followed the direction Ussop intended.
Apart from Nami, who was going somewhere, Luffy was the only one who had yet to board the ship. But he had a valid reason. The straw hat boy was on the beach with Conis and her father to repair the waver he found before he docked at Sky Island. However, in front of them now was a group of men in uniforms with sturdy bodies.
The crew on the ship couldn't hear their conversation because they were quite a distance away. Apart from that, Luffy and a group of men in uniform also spoke at a normal volume, making it impossible for those on the ship to hear. Therefore, all Zoro and co could do was guess what they were discussing.
"What were they talking about?" Ussop asked.
Seeing a group of people in uniform was nothing new for Maki. On Earth, things like that happen very often. If someone like that came to you personally, that would only mean one thing.
"There's a good chance they think we're breaking the law. Maybe someone reported us or something," replied the bespectacled girl.
"Breaking the law? But we didn't do anything, though?" Zoro asked.
Maki was silent at the question. But that didn't mean she didn't have the answers. The girl could guess what made them considered lawbreakers. However, she just didn't think her answer would change things. Even so, Maki wasn't the only one who had the answer to Zoro's question.
"If we talk about breaking the law, is it about us entering this area illegally?" said Sanji.
"Yeah, if that's the logic, we didn't pay toll fees to get to Skypea, right?" added Robin.
Hearing the explanation from those two, Ussop felt irritated and thought it was unfair because the gatekeeper let them pass by. However, guessing the situation would get them nowhere. Because of that, Ussop decided to ask Luffy directly.
"LUFFY! WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?!"
The boy with a scar under his eye turned towards the ship when he heard his friend's scream.
"I DON'T KNOW! THEY CONTINUE TO SAY WE ARE ILLEGAL TRESPASSERS AND DEMAND US TO PAY A FINE OF 10 BILLION EXTOL PER PERSON!"
The information that Luffy provided was more than enough to clarify the situation.
"10 billion per person, we've eight people, does that mean we've to pay 80 billion Extol? Isn't that too expensive," said Sanji.
"By the way, how much would that be if converted into Belly," asked Ussop.
Maki tried to remember the information from the old man who previously claimed to be a sky knight. And by doing simple math, the answer was very easy to solve.
"If 10,000 Extol is one Belly, 80 billion Extol is the same as eight million Belly."
'Well, I don't know how much it is in Yen,' added Maki.
Sanji, who heard the numbers, immediately shouted his dissatisfaction.
"HEY, ISN'T THAT TOO MUCH?! ANYWAY, THAT GATE KEEPER DIDN'T TELL US ANYTHING ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES!"
Even though he heard the protest, the group leader ignored it and only focused on Luffy, which made Sanji even more furious. However, before Sanji vomited all his complaints, they heard the sound of a girl screaming from another direction.
"WAIT, LUFFY! DON'T OPPOSE THOSE MEN!"
It was Nami. She came from behind the ship using a waver. When the distance between her and the ship was close enough that they no longer needed to shout to communicate, Ussop asked Nami a question.
"Don't oppose them? Hey, Nami, can we afford to pay an entry fee of eight million Belly?"
From the outside, it looked like Nami was ignoring Ussop's words. She kept quiet while pulling the gas lever on the waver. However, her expression was blank, and her mouth was agape as if she was surprised by the amount Ussop had mentioned. Her waver continued to move closer to Luffy without her realising it. When they were only a few metres apart, Nami's brain only finished processing Ussop's words.
The orange-haired girl suddenly pulled the gas lever hard, causing the waver's speed to increase drastically. This made her crash into the group leader in uniform, and at the same time, Nami let out a frustrated scream.
"Eight fucking million Belly is too fucking expensive!"
Luffy, who witnessed that, immediately laughed out loud until he shed tears while the other men in uniform stared at that barbaric act.
"Nami, your reaction is so funny as usual! Hahaha," said Luffy while laughing and holding his stomach.
Meanwhile, those on the ship let out sighs as a form of complaint, except Sanji, who gave Nami applause.
"That fool. She said not to oppose them but look at her," said Zoro, who jumped out of the ship,
Following Zoro, Sanji was also shot from the ship. However, he didn't forget to comment.
"Watch your mouth, Marimo. No one should call Nami-san stupid."
The two people went with a clear goal. After what Nami did, a fight couldn't be avoided. Having Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji was more than enough to overcome them. However, the work must be done was more than just beating up opponents.
"You go too, Ms. Otherworlders?"
Robin asked when she saw Maki, who was about to use the railing to support jumping.
"Yeah. I'm afraid those idiots focus more on fighting than protecting Nami."
—OoOoO—
Nami watched as her friends started beating them one by one. Nothing new there. It was a typical scene where Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji would be the bouncers in their group. However, not everything always went according to pattern. Their opponents had technology so foreign to their eyes that one or two things might go unnoticed.
Several people managed to escape by taking advantage of the gaps that Luffy created. They utilise boosters attached to their shoes to manoeuvre above the clouds. In that way, several people managed to escape the trio and shot at full speed towards Nami.
Nami wasn't a fighter. She probably had the basics of martial arts. However, she was terrible at group fights without using weapons. Seeing the group of people less than three metres away, Nami resigned herself to her body being the target of their swords. However, just as she had prepared for the worst, she felt a grip on her shoulder that pulled her back.
"Maki?!"
The bespectacled girl pulled Nami's body backwards, using it to gain more momentum. Maki had been running from the start before she reached Nami's place. As she pulled the girl, Maki used her body to provide additional acceleration and jumped forward with her knees facing the men.
The situation was that the men shot at high speed to hit Nami. However, Maki came with a leap forward, her knees facing them. They couldn't change direction at such a speed and a distance of less than one metre.
Indeed, just one knee wouldn't be enough to take down six people simultaneously. However, it was enough to create the momentum Maki wanted. Maki's knee hit the man who was driving at the front. The man's nose and mouth were shattered by the loud snoring. However, her kick to the man didn't stop there, and she kept moving forward, so the figure behind him was also pushed back and lost the balance.
Maki didn't waste that opportunity. She violently tackled the man, who lost his balance until his body fell. Quickly, Maki grabbed the man's leg and twisted it to make an ear-piercing joint sound. However, Maki didn't care and was quite satisfied because she managed to eliminate the man's movements.
There were four more people left. Those who initially targeted Nami changed direction to Maki because they thought the girl was one of the individuals who had to be eliminated immediately.
One of the men rushed over with a sword, ready to swing at Maki. However, the girl swiftly caught his arm and slammed him using an aikido technique. Not only that, Maki also disarmed his sword and didn't forget to twist her opponent's arm to ensure that she wouldn't act up again;
Even though she had gotten a weapon, Maki didn't consider using it. The reason was that the sword was similar to tsurugi, a Japanese sword with two edges. If Maki used it, she would probably end up killing someone or, at the very least, permanently disfiguring someone. And Maki wanted to avoid that damage. If she was going to use a weapon, she at least wanted something with a blunt edge.
'They are just ordinary officers. It would taste bad in my mouth if I had to kill someone who was just doing his job. Moreover, these people are not a threat.'
Maki threw herself to the ground when she felt someone about to attack her from behind. With a slight twist of her body, Maki delivered an ebi-geri kick that hit her opponent squarely in the chest. There was a sound of broken ribs, and the man was thrown several metres away.
While the remaining two were approaching, Maki blew their throats using her fingertips. There was no further action. She believed a throat-crushing attack was enough to render her opponent helpless and even dead if Maki didn't pull her punch.
"You insolent humans!" the uniformed group leader shouted from afar, seeing his comrades were quickly taken down.
Even though his face was battered and he had to endure the pain, it didn't extinguish the remaining fire of hatred for the Strawhat Pirates.
"The priests of Upper Yard… will personally judge all of you!" he shouted before he ran away.
—OoOoO—
"Just when I thought we had a solid trio, now we've got another one. It's no longer a monster trio but a monster quartet," Ussop commented after seeing how the four of them easily handled the problem.
The four people who came forward and immediately fought against a group of men in uniform relatively successfully trounced them without getting the slightest scratches. Not only that, Maki also showed a level that was on par with them, so it wasn't an exaggeration to call it a quartet when she fought together with the main trio.
"Only if Ms. Otherworlders are willing to join us," Robin replied.
Without waiting for a response, the woman with long black hair jumped out of the ship and joined those who had just fought on the beach. Ussop wanted to ask about Maki, who wasn't sure about joining, but seeing Robin, who had left first, he thought better of it and hurried to follow the woman with Chopper.
Meanwhile, they immediately held an impromptu meeting on the beach after receiving the threat.
"This is blackmail," said Sanji while puffing on his cigarette, "They deliberately let us in without paying the toll fee. But in the end, they just want to trap us to make more money."
"But even if the old lady forbade us to go in, we would still force it, right?" Ussop asked.
That question got a fierce look from Nami.
"Shut up!"
There was quite a debate about whether they should stay on the island or leave immediately. Even so, Luffy was the only voice who demanded that they continue their adventure on Sky Island. However, the majority of representatives wanted them to leave this country immediately. After considering various things and persuading Luffy, they finally agreed to follow the majority vote.
Before the group left, Ussop asked for tools to repair their ship. Meanwhile, Luffy asked for some food to replenish their supplies. That way, apart from these two people, Sanji came with them because he was responsible for preparing supplies. Those left behind made preparations on the ship, such as lifting the anchor and spreading the sail.
However, before that, there was something Maki did.
"I've never seen someone loot a defeated opponent's weapons before," Zoro commented on what Maki did.
"Losers go home in tears, winners leave with prizes," the girl replied.
Maki carefully assessed the swords she collected. They were all swords of the same type and quality. The only difference was the condition of the swords.
"Tsurugi, huh? Not bad," said Maki.
Tsurugi was a Japanese double-edged sword. In this world, it might have had a different name or even not a classification, and it would just be considered an ordinary sword. However, whatever it was, a sword was still a sword. Even though Maki preferred a katana over a tsurugi, it was better than nothing.
'The metal used is the same as that on earth. In other words, apart from that kairoseki thingy, it's very likely that the materials that make up this planet aren't that different from Earth,' Maki thought.
Of everything Maki collected, there were only two that she thought were in usable condition. She swung the two swords together with rhythm and beautiful movements like a talent performing acrobatic moves.
Meanwhile, as a swordsman, Zoro couldn't help but observe Maki's movements.
'She has a firm grip on those swords. The way she swung the swords was also powerful, and there were no inefficient movements. That woman was not only skilled in hand-to-hand combat but also masters the art of swordsmanship.'
Maki noticed Zoro's gaze, so she turned to look at the man again.
"What?"
Zoro shook and replied, "Nothing. Do you use dual swords?"
"Well, personally, I prefer one-sword style. Using two swords indeed increases the intensity of attacks, but I don't think it's very efficient regarding stamina usage."
Even though he looked like a stiff person, Zoro wasn't an old-fashioned man. At least, even though he had his own values, he would respect other people's opinions regarding his swordsmanship style, which used dual and even threefold swords. Moreover, from what he saw, Maki knew what she was saying and knew what she needed in swordsmanship. So, even though Zoro thought dual swords were better than single swords, he knew it was pointless to impose his opinion on an expert with a different style.
"Then, why did you take two swords if you are a single-sword user?" Zoro asked.
"One is for my use, while the other is for supply."
"Is that so?"
There was no further discussion after that. They walked towards their ship after Maki took two swords in the best condition and put them in their respective sheaths. Robin, Nami, and Chopper seemed to have finished their business, leaving no other work for Maki and Zoro to do. As a free rider, it left a bad taste in Maki's mouth as she didn't help any in the preparations.
'But well, it is what it is.'
—OoOoO—
Maki sat cross-legged on the deck while leaning against the wooden wall. She was busy wiping and caring for her two looted swords. Meanwhile, the others were also relaxing in their own ways. However, the calm was disturbed when they heard a whistle.
"What was that? It sounded loud, and I don't think it came from a construction or residential area," said Zoro.
Maki got up from her seat. She immediately sheathed her swords. She kept a sword she didn't use in a barrel while she put the other sword at her waist by hooking it to a special belt for holding swords.
"I have a bad feeling," Maki said.
Just like Maki, Zoro also felt an unpleasant feeling right after the whistle sounded. And not long after, their ship shook violently. At the same time, a pair of giant red claws clamped down on both sides of the ship, causing cracks.
"What the hell?" Nami cursed.
"It's… like a shrimp claw," Robin commented.
Zoro ran towards the railing to see what was actually attacking them. He was surprised when he saw the sea monster carrying their ship on its head at high speed.
"How could something like this be called a shrimp?!" Zoro shouted.
The monster roughly took them away from Angel Beach. Shaking occurred almost every second, making it difficult for them to find proper footing. Zoro and Maki could have jumped out and attacked the monster Robin said looked like a shrimp. However, they chose not to because no one knew what the beast would do to Nami and the others if Zoro and Maki jumped out.
Unfortunately, when they decided to survive and wait until they reached the destination where the monster took them, the group was faced with another problem. Not far before them were lined up with monsters that resembled blue sea snakes. They were like the ones Sanji beat when they were just sailing in the clouds, but they were much larger.
"Is this the heaven's judgment that the man mentioned earlier?" Maki asked while frowning.
Chopper stood up on his shaky legs. No matter how hard the fawn tried to be brave, he couldn't hide his fear.
"Are we going to die?"
"As if I would just leave it like that," said Zoro irritably, "I'll beat up those snake monsters. Maki, stay on the ship, and please look after them."
"Copy that."
After receiving the confirmation, Zoro immediately jumped and started cutting down the monsters blocking their way. Meanwhile, Maki, who was on guard on the ship, heard a sound approaching them. Right at the ship's side, another monster appeared and was about to attack them. That was fortunate because Maki reacted quickly by jumping and slashing at the giant snake.
However, there was a difference between Maki and Zoro's slashes. Zoro could emit a kind of aura from his sword, so his slashes could leave deep wounds. Meanwhile, in Maki's case, even though her slashes weren't inferior to Zoro's, her sword had no aura. That made the wound given to the monster relatively shallow or only the size of the blade of her sword.
'Tsk, I guess I'll be able to come up with something cool after getting isekaied.'
Maki was dissatisfied with the results of her shallow slash. Maki launched slashes with a higher intensity to cover up that weakness so that her sword could tear the monster apart quickly. After that, attacks from monsters resembling giant sea snakes continued. However, the combination of Zoro and Maki was enough to overcome them.
And at the moment the attack ended and the shrimp monster took them away, the Strawhat Pirates crew arrived at a place and were faced with a mysterious giant ancient altar.
