Chapter Seventy-Three
Mary Cronk walked into Scarlett's bedroom. She looked around and all she saw was Rhett. She said to him, "Are you going to assist me in this delivery?"
"Yes."
"It is not for the faint of heart, so tighten up your belt and let's get started."
Mary sent Rhett to get a long list of items, but she only told him to get one or two at a time. Scarlett said, "Why don't you tell him all the items at once?"
"Mr. Butler needs to stay busy for the next hour while he gets his mind around what is happening here."
"True."
Four hours later, Rhett and Scarlett were the proud parents of a tiny baby girl. When Mary saw the baby, she said, "Scarlett, are you still feeling strong contractions?"
"Yes."
"I think there is another one in there. I thought you were overly large."
Both Rhett and Scarlett said, "Another one?"
"Yeah, I think you are going to have twins."
Scarlett covered up the first twin with the bedspread. All anyone could see was her little face. Her little face that looked just like their Bonnie from the first timeline.
A few minutes later, Mary said, "Mr. Butler, go bathe the baby."
"I have to get some hot water."
Rhett quickly left the room.
As Rhett was leaving, Scarlett called out, "And my meal."
When Rhett got back with the hot water, he was a father times two. There were two tiny little girls. The girls looked exactly alike.
Mary said, "Mr. Butler, get them cleaned up and wrapped up. You will need to keep them warm. They are tiny." When Mary saw Rhett's stricken face, she added, "Not too tiny. Just keep them warm. It is cold in here. Especially for two little girls who have been inside a womb that was ninety-eight degrees."
Rhett said, "Of course. Of course. Which one do I take first?"
Scarlett said, "This one. She came out first."
While Rhett was bathing the babies, Mary took care of the last of the delivery. She soon left, after saying, "I will come check on you and the girls tomorrow."
After Rhett had bathed, swaddled, and laid his daughters next to his wife, he said, "Which one is Bonnie?"
"They both are. We have to think of another name. How about Eugenia Victoria and Elizabeth Theresa?"
"How about Eugenia Victoria and Victoria Eugenia?"
Scarlett smiled at her silly husband, but she liked his suggestion. She said, "All right. Go get me a piece of ribbon from my vanity table."
"What for?"
"To identify which one is Genie. Actually, get me two different colored pieces of ribbon. Neither one being blue. Get me red and yellow."
After Rhett brought the ribbon to Scarlett, she tied the yellow ribbon around one of the babies' ankles then tucked the baby's foot back into the receiving blanket. She said, "This is Genie." After tying the red ribbon around the other babies' ankle and tucking her foot back in, she said, "And this is Tory. From now forward Genie's color is yellow and Tory's color is red."
"What do you mean?"
"It is simple. If you see a red sweater, it is Tory's. If you see a yellow hat, it is Genie's. Also, if you see a little girl with yellow on…"
"I will know it is Genie."
"Exactly."
"Are we never going to dress them in any other color."
"We will dress them in other colors, once we know who is who. The gowns don't have to be solid red or yellow. Just the predominant color has to be red or yellow. Also, the red toy is Tory's and the yellow one is Genie's. Our strong-willed daughters are going to fight so we have to figure out a way to be able to intervene and calm the waters quickly."
"I can't believe this, two Bonnies."
"She came back and is going to give you twice as much love as you had before. You will be a much-loved man, my dear."
"I already am a much-loved man. Two babies. I can't believe it."
"Genie and Tory."
Rhett laid down on the bed next to his children and said, "Now I understand why you don't want to have any more children."
"No, I don't, but I won't stop sleeping with you to obtain that goal."
"We won't have any more, even if I must wear a condom. That was horrible."
"We will have at least one more. You should have a son."
"Thank you, my love."
Rhett and Scarlett heard the knock on the door. It was Scarlett's meal. As the maid was placing the tray in front of her, Scarlett said, "Did you contact the wet nurse?"
"Not yet."
"You need to go do that now. The girls need to nurse within an hour of being born. Her name is Dorothea Dix. She lives with the Mertzs down the street on Wilcox Lane. Ethel knows Dorothea is coming to work for us.
"I will go let Disney know to go get her. Since we have twins, will we need to hire another wet nurse?"
"Yes. I will nurse one of them until I can get another wet nurse lined up."
"All right."
"You need to go buy us another bassinet tomorrow. Tonight, they can sleep in the same bassinet. They are used to being crammed together. Get Disney and Walt to move the furniture from the room on the fourth floor to the room next to this one."
"All right, Dear. Let me do that right now."
Clarence smiled. He knew that Rhett needed a lot of children. He also knew that Scarlett hated being with child and delivering that child. Therefore, Clarence gave the couple twins. He probably would do it next time also.
When Rhett came back, he had Ella with him. He said, "Dorothea will be here within thirty minutes."
"I may have to nurse both of them. Dorothea can give them more milk when she gets here."
"All right. Ella, these are your sisters. Genie and Tory."
Ella looked at the babies, but at two and a half she was not truly aware of the significance of them. Rhett was going to try to continue being a good father to both Wade and Ella.
After Scarlett finished her meal, she put the tray on the floor. She reached over and picked Genie up. She said, "You need to take Ella back to the nursery. She doesn't need to be seeing all of this."
"True."
Scarlett nursed Genie for about ten minutes then she nursed Tory for the same amount of time. That would have to do until Dorothea could give them more milk.
When Dorothea got to the brownstone, her cot and the bassinet had been moved to the room next to Scarlett and Rhett's. The rest of the furniture could wait for the next day. When Dorothea saw the room, she said, "I need somewhere to sit down."
Within minutes, Walt had moved the rocking chair to the fifth floor also.
Around two o'clock, Rhett left his home to walk to Wade's school. Rhett always walked home with the boy. He was afraid of the little boy getting lost if he tried to walk home alone. He wasn't taking any chances with his children now that he had them back.
As the boy and the man were walking home, Wade was telling Rhett all about his day at school. When the little boy had told all his news, Rhett said, "Your mother has given birth to two babies."
"Girls or boys?"
"Girls. Isn't it wonderful?"
Wade was thinking, 'No, it was not wonderful. I wanted a brother, not another silly sister. Two more, in fact."
Yet Wade looked up at his father and the man looked so happy that all he could say was, "Great."
"Yes, great. Would you like to meet them?"
Wade wanted to say no, but he could tell that Daddy would be hurt if he said that so, he said, "Sure."
When Wade saw his new sisters in their bassinet, he thought, 'They are so tiny. They probably won't be any trouble.' He said, "Where is Mother?"
"Next door. Let's go see her."
"Great."
After Wade was in Scarlett's bedroom, she hugged him and told him excitedly that he was a big brother once again. He had smiled and tried to act happy for Mama's sake. Mama and Daddy looked so happy that Wade decided his new sisters were there to stay.
The next morning, Rhett brought two new bassinets. They were beautiful and elaborate. One had a huge red ribbon tied in a bow around it, and the other had a huge yellow ribbon tied in a bow around it. They were placed in the nursery.
The nursery originally had been planned to be on the fourth floor. All the furniture had been placed in the room. Within twenty-four hours the nursery was next door to Rhett and Scarlett's room. She wasn't walking up and down the stairs to get her babies and feed them.
A month later, Elizabeth had come to visit once again. She came every day because Rhett seemed to expect her to be as captivated by the twins as he was. She had at first thought it was new father excitement, but her son's enthusiasm over his daughters was not waning in the least little bit. Surprisingly to Elizabeth, Scarlett was as equally besotted by her new daughters as Rhett was.
As Rhett greeted his mother in the foyer, she had turned to the stairs. Their routine was for her to see the babies first of all. She had to ooh and aah over them. She had to state how beautiful the girls were, which they were beautiful with their blue eyes, pale skin, and black hair.
That day in late February, Elizabeth said, "I hope the girls retain their blue eyes."
Rhett said while looking at Scarlett, "They will. Their eyes will always be as blue as the Bonnie Blue Flag."
Scarlett had smiled back. She had said, "Bonnie Blue."
Elizabeth handed Rhett a couple of gowns she had made along with two more beanies. One gown was made from a fabric with the prominent color being red and the other one the prominent color was yellow. She said, "It was smart of you to assign the girls colors. I wouldn't be able to tell them apart if you hadn't."
"It was Scarlett's idea."
Scarlett smiled at Rhett. Elizabeth knew the couple did that a lot, smiled at each other.
Scarlett said, "Rhett had bracelets made for the girls. Tory's has rubies and Genie's has citrines. See."
Scarlett held up one of the babies' arms. There on Genie's wrist was a beautiful bracelet, which was probably worth a small fortune.
Elizabeth said, "What are you going to do when they outgrow the bracelets?"
Rhett said, "Have another stone added."
"Of course. "
As Elizabeth walked home to her townhouse, she marveled that Rhett was so happy. That the man was finally a respectable part of society.
There was still just one wet nurse. While Scarlett was nursing one of the babies, Rhett asked her about it, she said, "I haven't gotten around to finding another wet nurse yet. I will do it once I can leave the townhouse.
In a few minutes, Scarlett said, "Take your daughter and get her to burp."
"Come here, Tory." Rhett knew it was Tory because she had a red beanie on. As he was patting his second daughter's back, he said, "Your idea to color coordinate was brilliant. How did you think of it?"
"I didn't. There will be a family named O'Brien that moves into the neighborhood. They will have twins. Mrs. O'Brien will tie the ribbon around her sons' ankles so people can tell Johnny from Eddie and vice versa.
Over the next year Rhett was not surprised that Scarlett never got around to getting another wet nurse.
In late March, Rosemary and Derek had a baby that they named Langston Derek. Elizabeth had not gone down for the birth of the baby. She told Rhett, "There is no place for me to stay. Derek's mother is there. Derek is Mrs. Jeter's only child."
Rhett suspected that his mother was just as happy not to have to take the train all that distance just to welcome a baby into the world. Rhett knew his mother was not a young woman. Although she was pretty spry while out visiting all her friends.
On Scarlett and Rhett's anniversary she gave him a pair of sapphire cufflinks. He was humbled that she was once again trusting him. She trusted him enough to open herself up to him. Rhett gave her a pair of sapphire earbobs. She was thrilled. Not just with the gift, but with the similarity of their gifts. They both thought they were wonderful presents. They said so with their mouths and their bodies.
After both Rhett and Scarlett were sexually satisfied and all the I love yous said, Rhett started telling Scarlett stories.
When Rhett knew she was asleep, he said to the universe, "Thank you Clarence. I couldn't have done it without you. Strangely I feel the need to say this also. To paraphrase a verse from Genesis – Marvin, what you meant for evil, Clarence was able to turn it around it make it for good. Thank you, Buddy."
Clarence, who had been listening, smiled. He was waiting for another human to help save their soul. He was very picky. They had to have a good heart no matter how deep down their heart was. Right now, he was escorting saved souls to heaven.
Clarence and Rhett had turned things around and they had succeeded. As Clarence left Rhett's bedroom, he wondered, 'Was Rhett speaking to me at the end or to his friend? I guess I will never know.'
