Edward's hoax

Alice walked towards the building while rummaging in her bag. She fished a key out of it and made a show of waving and showing off said key. Edward smiled back and waited patiently until she was safely back inside.

She turned around and walked slowly towards the building. What a silly girl, Edward snickered in his now empty car. She turned around for probably the third time and waved again. If it took any longer, she could get a cold.

A sound made her suddenly turn around mid-wave, and she finally noticed a woman coming out of the apartment building. She smiled to her and hurried herself into the flat. This time, she turned around a fourth time and smiled at Edward through the glass door with a smile that was entirely and utterly pure relief.

After waving a fifth time, she turned around and walked towards the elevator. Or at least, that´s what Edward thought.

Knowing she was safely back inside, Edward turned the car and drove home. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he replayed the night´s highlights in his mind, while his fingers drummed on the steering wheel to the rhythm of the upbeat pop song on the radio.

He really liked how outspoken Alice was. She blurted out what she was thinking, and that was something else compared to the other woman he dated. Or well, except for Jessica, but he preferred to never think about her again. Alice was straightforward in another way.

Alice was honest.

The only thing that gnawed at him was the fact that her Greek wasn´t as good as Esme told him. Not that being bilingual was something he searched for in a partner, but it wasn´t common for Esme to exaggerate and hype him up for his dates.

Anyway, maybe Doctor Cullen was simply too fond of his daughter that he might have exaggerated her language skills, he couldn´t really blame his mother for that.

Another thing that spiked his interest was the fact that Alice apparently knew Jacob. And not only know, but they had dated previously. The world was small.

He smiled as thought of his old rival. He was honest when he spoke of him; maybe the term rivals meant something a tiny bit more sinister and he would never wish Jacob any harm, but they shared a little rebellious past between them. Two boys who had the world in front of them, and many eyes were watching as they navigated their studies. As luck would have it, their grades were almost similar, which spiked their rivalry.

They could have been the best of friends as they were so similar, weren´t it for the fact that Billy Black, Jacob´s father, owned an energy drink imperium called Wolfe, that rivalled Esmasen in popularity. Or at least, that´s what Jacob thought. Everyone knew people liked coffee more for their daily dose of caffeine.

It was whispered by a few employees that Esme and Billy had some kind of affair going on a few years prior, but because people loved nothing more than to gossip, Edward never asked his mother about it. He also really didn´t want to know the answer.

So all in all, he and Jacob Black could have been close.

As he came home and made a cup of tea for himself, the sight of his laptop was alluring. He suspected Jacob was in a similar position as him; working under his parent´s wing until he was fit to take over the business.

But Edward wasn´t sure, and most of all the night´s events had made him curious. So he unlocked his computer and went to Jacob´s Facebook page.

He knew Jacob would get a notification if he went to his LinkedIn page, and Edward sure as hell wouldn´t give him the satisfaction! So Facebook had to do it.

Edward scrolled through Jacob´s pictures. A week ago, Jacob went to a blind taste test for Wolke´s newest Christmas flavour. He didn´t reveal yet what the flavour could be, and Edward made a mental note to upgrade Esmasen´s seasonal menu. Better well stolen than poorly invented.

Edward leaned back into his chair. He knew the chances were small, but he was curious. So, he went back to Jacob´s pictures and clicked through them.

A photo of Jacob in his suit. A photo of Jacob after a meeting. A photo of Jacob during a hike. And finally, after clicking through the most boring pictures Edward had ever seen, he finally fount it.

A picture of Alice and Jacob together.

Only another name was tagged, and Jacob called the woman ´Bells´.
