"Doctor, this is Professor Edwin Bracewell. Head of our Ironsides Project."
The Doctor gives him a V for Victory salute. Belle follows what he did.
"How do you do?" Professor Bracewell says, smiling. Belle smiles back as she links arms with Amy.
"Two flights JU thirty eights approaching from the east," she hears someone say.
A bomb lands nearby. Amy gazes at all the barrage balloons moored over the city. Belle follows her eye movements.
"Oh, Doctor. Doctor, it's—"
"History."
Belle groans. "I don't want it to be another Pompeii day," she tells him. Amy looks at her.
"What happened during Pompeii day? Did you go to Pompeii?"
"He really didn't tell you a thing, did he?"
"It's been two years since I last saw him. Of course he didn't," Amy says. Belle glares at the Doctor playfully. He glared back, but kissed her cheek. She blushes again, having him smirk.
"Ready, Bracewell?" They hear Winston say.
"Aye aye, sir. On my order, fire!"
Energy bolts zoom out from a sandbagged emplacement towards the approaching Nazi planes. Everyone has a dead hit.
"What was that?" Amy asks as the Doctor takes Belle and puts an arm around her waist. He stares at Winston. Belle is tense.
"That wasn't human. That was never human technology. That sounded like. Show me. Show me. Show me what that was!"
"Advance," Professor Bracewell says.
"Our new secret weapon. Ha!"
Suddenly, a Dalek rolls out from the emplacement. Its designation logo is a Union Flag and it is painted khaki, with an army utility belt around it.
"What do you think? Quite something, eh?"
The Doctor lets go of Belle's waist. She could see how angry he got when looking at the Dalek, though she didn't know what the Dalek was.
"What are you doing here?"
"I am your soldier," the Dalek says in a robot voice. Belle cringed.
"What?"
"I am your soldier."
"Stop this. Stop now. Now, you know who I am. You always know."
"Your identity is unknown," says the Dalek.
"Perhaps I can clarify things here. This is one of my Ironsides," Professor Bracewell tries to help.
"Your what?" The Doctor and Belle ask at the same time. The Doctor grabs Belle's hand again.
"You will help the Allied cause in any way that you can."
"Yes."
"Until the Germans have been utterly smashed,"
"Yes."
"And what is your ultimate aim?"
"To win the war," the Dalek announced.
•••
They're now in Winston's office.
"They're Daleks. They're called Daleks," the Doctor explains. Belle is now less confused.
"They are Bracewell's Ironsides, Doctor. Look. Blueprints, statistics, field tests, photographs. He invented them," Winston says.
"Invented them? Oh, no, no, no," he says.
"Yes. He approached one of our brass hats a few months ago. Fellow's a genius!"
"A Scottish genius, too. Maybe you should listen to—"
Amy sees Belle and the Doctor give her a look.
"Shush. He didn't invent them. They're alien."
"Alien," Winston says.
One glides past the open door, looking in. Belle tenses up and the Doctor pulls her towards him.
"And totally hostile," he says as the Dalek continues gliding away.
"Precisely. They will win me the war," Winston says, making the Doctor annoyed.
•••
"Why won't you listen to me? Why did you call me in if you won't listen to me?" The Doctor asks as they're walking down the corridor. Belle walks with Amy.
"When I rang you a month ago, I must admit I had my doubts. The Ironsides seemed too good to be true," Winston told the Doctor.
"Yes. Right. So destroy them. Exterminate them," the Doctor says. Belle frowns. She could tell he's normally not like this. What happened that made him hate the Daleks so much?
"But imagine what I could do with a hundred. A thousand!"
"I am imagining," he says. Winston goes inside a room.
A Dalek goes past them.
"Amy, Belle, tell him," the Doctor looks at the two. Amy and Belle share a look.
"Tell him what?"
"About the Daleks," the Doctor says. Belle looks to the side.
"What would we know about the Daleks?" Amy asks.
"I only just met one today," Belle exclaims. The Doctor frowns.
"Everything. They invaded your world, remember? Planets in the sky. You don't forget that. Amy, Belle, tell me you remember the Daleks."
"No, sorry," Amy says. Belle nods in agreement.
"That's not possible," the Doctor says. Amy looks away.
Belle looks at the Doctor with sad eyes. He looks back. She leans in to kiss his cheek. He gives a small smile because she hadn't done that to him yet. He leans in to give her a kiss on the cheek but ends up kissing her lips.
"Get a room," Amy rolls her eyes as they're pulled away. Belle doesn't know what to feel, and to her, it's quite a scary feeling.
•••
"So, they're up to something. But what is it? What are they after?" The Doctor asks as they wait for Winston.
"Well, let's just ask, shall we?"
"Amy. Amelia!" The Doctor shouts as she goes up to the Dalek. The Doctor leans in to Belle.
"You're a girl," he points out, "stop her. She'll listen—"
Amy taps on a Dalek's shell, but as she does this they hear a phone ring. It's coming from the Doctor's pocket.
"Hang on," Belle says as he looks around awkwardly. "That sounds like my ringtone."
"Ah," the Doctor says, cringing. "I forgot about that. Here."
Belle gasps as she has her phone. "You got it! Did you visit Wilf?"
The Doctor nods. "Back in the day."
Belle takes the phone and answers it. "I'll be in a minute. Continue talking, Amy."
"Belle," the Doctor groans as she walks away.
"Hello?" She greets the caller. She hears a familiar voice. One she hasn't heard since...
"Belle!" The Doctor's voice is on the other side of the phone. His old regeneration.
"Oh hello Doctor!" She tries to peek and see the current Doctor's face. He's looking away, knowing what goes on in this conversation. Winston approaches him.
"Belle!" She hears Donna say. "What're you up to? You got your phone?"
"Yup! Future Doctor gave it to me," she bit her lip.
"Ah. Future me?" The Doctor asks.
"Yup. And I'm kinda digging this future look, Doctor. Can't believe you're the same man..."
"Can I be of assistance?" Belle hears a Dalek say as the Doctor, Amy, and Winston are talking. The Doctor looks at Belle. She winks. He blushes.
"I heard that," the Doctor exclaims. "Is that a Dalek? Belle, what are—?"
"Can't know too much about your future now, can we?" Belle says, smirking. She could tell that he groaned.
"Well since you're already on an adventure with future me, I can't ask if you want to join us. So I guess we'll just have to wait. Just be careful Belle."
"Yeah... I will. And just to let you know," she says, "you dropped me off at the wrong time. It was six months after, that you dropped me off. Not the same night."
"Oh, er, did you hear that, Donna? Another phone call. Ah, Martha Jones! I gotta go. I'll talk to you another time. Well..."
"I get it. You don't like me," Belle teases. "I don't like you either," she says.
"Oi," Donna says, "no fighting, you hear?"
"We're way past fighting now," Belle tells Donna. "I want to tell you all about it when I see you next."
"See me next? Aren't I there?"
"Oh look! Future Doctor's glaring at me. He is quite handsome, I—"
"Heard that!" Past Doctor exclaims.
"Bye!" Belle says into the phone. She closed it up and sighed, wondering if her Doctor remembered that conversation.
