The city of Omashu was as magnificent as Zaheer had imagined. The texts from school had described the place as a marvel of ingenuity and strength. It was more than that, Zaheer concluded as he watched the city draw closer to the airship. With both hands and his nose glued to the glass windows, the 12 year old cooed as the airship passed the mail system on its way to the palace.
"Pretty awesome, huh?"
"Yeah!" squealed the boy to his aunt Ty Lee who had approached behind him.
The acrobat pointed to one of the mail shoots roaring down the railing as they passed.
"Your mom road one of those when she first fought Aang," she commented.
Zaheer turned from the window to look beyond his aunt to his mother who was smoking a cigar, seated beside a small table with her morning tea and splash of fire nation ale.
"Really?" He asked, pleasantly.
She blew a thick puff of smoke in their direction. "Yep, would've killed him too, if it weren't for that deranged king," with a small smile, she added, "In hindsight, glad I didn't, but I could have".
Ty Lee and Zaheer both giggled at the comment.
"Yes," added the fire lady seated on the opposite side of the table, sipping her own concoction of tea and ale with elegance. "Lot's of memories here".
Although Zaheer was too young to understand the change in tone and mood, Azula and the fire lady exchanged looks.
"Haven't I apologized for that mishap, Mai? Let it rest," spoke Zaheer's mother.
The fire lady shrugged. "Another apology wouldn't hurt".
Azula sucked in her breath and stood to move away from the woman. She also moved past her son and Ty Lee to face the glass."Much has changed," she said, mostly to herself. "We're here to right wrongs, Ladies".
Ty Lee approached her, giving the woman a kiss on the cheek that she accepted.
"Yes, we were kids then. Besides, isn't Aang meeting us there?" She asked, trying to ease the sudden tension that Zaheer also did not notice.
"Yes," affirmed Mai. "He and his wife with their munchkins will be there".
As she said the word wife, Azula looked over her shoulder with a glare. Yet the fire lady was unflappable as usual. With another smooth gulp of her drink, she added, "I wonder have you met the munchkins, Zaheer?"
"No," said the boy, innocently.
"Enough, Mai," Azula spoke in a low tone, glancing at Ty Lee quickly, who gave the fire lady a confused look.
"Guys, calm down. This isn't the best time to--"
"Why not?" Continued Mai to Azula's ire. "Righting wrongs, right, Princess Azula?"
The woman glared at the other through their signature bangs. Neither said another word as the ship came to a land and the door was opened. The first faces to greet them were none other than Avatar Aang and Katara.
"Hi, Aang and Katara, it's great to see you both. You look so happy," commented the fire lady as she stepped off of the ship with Azula, Ty Lee and Zaheer following behind her.
The couple bowed respectfully.
"I take it that Zuko couldn't make it?" Asked Katara. "I was hoping he would".
Azula gave a regal smile to the waterbender. "No, I was sent in his place. I hope that doesn't disappoint you," she responded.
Aang gave a nervous chuckle as the women glared at one another. Despite the end of the war and many years that had passed, Azula and Katara were still on frienemy terms. The two were as alike as they were opposites and thoughts of what each of them had been like in private were never far from his mind.
"Katara," groaned Aang, barely holding himself together as the waterbender came apart beneath him.
Katara kissed him with passion that made him feel like the luckiest man on earth. She would always be his forever girl.
"Azula," His mind suddenly called out to the firebender who rode him like a komodo-rhino.
She loved taking charge, yet likewise came apart from his dominance. She was his eternal girl.
"Avatar Aang, did you really fight with Mommy on the mail carriers?" Asked the innocent child voice of his last son.
Aang gave the boy a hug. Although Katara still felt apprehensive about the matter, she did the same.
"Yes," said the avatar. "She nearly killed me too".
"Good thing she didn't, right Azula?" Mai could not help interjecting.
When they were all settled into their respective rooms in Bumi's palace, Zaheer watched as his mother meticulously applied her make-up in front of a golden vanity. It was just the two of them now as the others were all in Bumi's dining hall for dinner.
Taking a seat next to her, the boy asked, "Mommy, what if I am an airbender?"
Azula nearly missed the mark with her lipstick at the question. Eyes wide, she looked to her son in the mirror. Zaheer noticed her shaking hand place the vial of lipstick down on the vanity's table.
"Why would you ask that? Has Mai said anything to you? Your uncle?"
Zaheer shook his head. "No, Ma'am," he spoke quickly. "It's just Izumi started firebending and--"
"Finally," interrupted Azula. "Took her long enough, she must get it from her grandfather's side".
Zaheer was not sure what to say at this, but continued anyway. "It's just I haven't firebent--"
"Yet," Azula added.
"Yet," he also added, "So what if I'm not a firebender at all? Izumi said--"
Azula breathed hard through her nose, making the candles in the room dance with blue flames before returning to their original orange states, "Nonsense what Izumi says. She is more infuriating than her mother, at times," taking Zaheer's head in hands she turned his face towards her own, adding, "You are a special boy. A prince among princes. You are my son. A god".
Zaheer's eyes clouded as she kissed his nose. "I love you, Mommy, I'm sorry I'm not a bender".
"Nothing to be sorry for, Dear. Your aunt Ty Lee is also not a bender and she is more powerful than most benders".
Zaheer perked at this. He was too young to understand the real relationship between his mother and his aunt. They slept in the same bed when Ty Lee visited from time to time, and kissed on the lips every now and then, but other than that, they still regarded one another as friends. He did enjoy training with his aunt when she came around which was not as often as it used to be.
A palace servant came to the door asking to escort Zaheer to the dining hall at which Azula agreed.
When they left, the boy noticed the tall avatar and his wife were also in the hallway. The waterbending lady had her arms crossed, her face souring when she saw him.
"You need to tell him, Aang," Zaheer heard her say.
"In due time, Katara. He's too young to understand right now". When they both spotted him, Aang gave a regal smile and wave. "Save some food for me, Son!" He called.
Zaheer felt his stomach fill with warmth. If only he was a son of the avatar. He wondered if he would have been an airbender or any type of bender. Surely he would have. At the time, he did not know who his father was, yet it did not bother him as his mother always said, "No one of merit," when asked. So the boy imagined the avatar being his father, of course, not understanding what that really implied. He smiled back at the couple innocently as the servant hurried him away.
Aang gave a sigh of relief when his son had disappeared down the hallway. Turning back to his angry wife, he gave pleading eyes.
"Katara, can't this wait? I know things are still awkward, but it's been twelve years, now".
Katara scowled at him from her hair loopies. In a lowered voice that only they could hear, she spoke. "I know you're still sleeping with her. I expect her to lie, but you. I thought you were better than this".
Aang's eyes widened. It was true that he was the world's worst liar. And Katara was very much right about her accusations. Many of his "vacations" to Ember Island alone, consisted of lying on the beach with the fire family by day and to Zuko's ire, night time "spars" with the fire lord's sister. Ty Lee and Katara were both aware of this fact.
"Please, Katara," he begged. "I'm the avatar, but I make human mistakes too," he reminded her.
"What about our children, Aang?" Katara asked, her voice cracking. "I deal with you and this for them, but one day this will hurt them, don't you understand?"
Aang knew the conversation was over even before Katara left him alone in the hallway. With a sigh, he looked to the slightly ajar door just down the hall. He knew Azula was there and had probably heard them. Like a puppet, he followed the strings pulling on his heart until he was inside the woman's room, the door closed and locked and her lips in the most erotic of places.
The princess was different in many ways. Especially after the birth of their son. Aang held her head in place, leaning against the wall with heavy breaths. He could not resist her even when they were enemies. Even when she attempted and even succeeded in killing him. He sought revenge and pleasure with her. Her gasps echoed in his ear followed by muffled screams into the sheets between her teeth.
The avatar sought and claimed his vengence over the fire princess multiple times.
As she rode him, her nails grazed his chest, eyes smoking with lust or love. Aang was never really sure. She grabbed his shoulders and moved faster, nearly causing a fire from the friction between them.
Aang let his dying marriage escape his mind as he was engulfed. He also let the jealousy he felt against the princess's partner, Ty Lee, fall by the wayside. For now, it was just him and Azula.
"I know you love this," she said in his ear.
Aang placed his arms behind his head, giving her a smirk.
"Just as much as you love it," he said back, his confidence front and center when she tilted her head back, on fully display.
"Yes!" She yelled out, not caring who heard.
"You two have to stop," a disgusted Mai scolded the two figures emerging from Azula's room.
Azula sucked air in her teeth. "You're always lurking about, Fire Lady. I'm starting to think Zuzu is not pleasing you. Maybe one day we'll let you join".
"I know," commented Aang.
Both women looked to him, Mai in silent amusement and Azula with a death stare that made his spine hurt.
"Is there a problem?" Azula finally spoke after moments of awkward silence. "Perhaps you could've said that before you entered my room".
Aang hung his head. "Mai's right, Azula. Enough. We have to right wrongs".
"That's what this trip is all about, right, Princess?"
Azula felt her body's temperature increase as the avatar and Mai continued.
"Zuko wasn't here for a reason, Azula. It's Zaheer. I made a deal with them. He's going to be sent to the fire army. And you--"
"Will accept it," finished Mai, "The avatar has a reputation to keep and we have a throne to protect".
